Yassan

"Yassan is a meat kappo of long renown. The shop is busy night after night, filling up as soon as the shop curtain is posted outside. Staff use German as a sort of code, calling tongue ‘Zunge’, heart ‘Herz’, stomach ‘Magen’ and so on. The practice began at a time when many of its regulars were German physicians. ‘Yassan’ is an affectionate contraction of the restaurant’s original owner-chef’s name, ‘Yasuo-san’. Calabashes hang from the rafters around the counter, recalling that Yasuo-san liked sake in these gourds." - Michelin Inspector

We had an unforgettable evening at this restaurant — the most delicious food paired with the worst attitude we’ve ever experienced in Japan. The third-generation owner (I assume), a young woman who served us, treated us very differently from the Japanese guests sitting next to us. She was warm, friendly, and attentive to them, but completely cold and indifferent toward us. Throughout the meal, she showed almost no sense of hospitality. When we ordered additional dishes, she even urged us to hurry and finish eating because “people are waiting outside,” despite the fact that the Japanese guests who entered at the same time as us were still eating comfortably — yet she only rushed us. The worst part happened at checkout. Once again, we saw her being extremely welcoming to the Japanese customers. But when it was our turn, she just muttered a dismissive “arigato,” ushered us toward the door, and said: “Don’t recommend our place to people who cannot speak Japanese, and don’t post anything online.” I was shocked. After stepping outside, I politely told her that what she said was very rude. Instead of apologizing, she responded arrogantly: “Why? I’m the only one who can speak English. We don’t have time to take care of you if you can’t speak Japanese. Not everyone can eat raw meat, so we can’t take responsibility for your health. You might get sick tomorrow.” I explained that eating here was my own choice and that I understood what I was ordering. So I asked her “Do you say this to all non–Japanese-speaking customers? Are they all unwelcome here?” She confidently answered: “Yes.” and then turned around and slammed the door behind her. To this young lady: if your restaurant has your rules, I also have my rights. Writing a review is my right, and it is not for you to decide whether I’m allowed to post anything online. If Japanese hospitality is known worldwide, this restaurant is an exception — and an embarrassment to that reputation. No matter how delicious the food is, we will never return. As she herself told us that this place does not welcome anyone who can’t speak Japanese, I’m simply doing others a favor by writing this review. If you don’t speak Japanese, do yourself a favor — avoid this restaurant unless you want to be treated with such uncivilised behavior and disrespect.

This restaurant is a true gem, standing as a testament to family tradition. It's been around for decades and is lovingly run by a grandmother, her daughter, grandson, and granddaughter. I had one of the most uniquely memorable dining experiences of my life here. The restaurant operates in an omakase style, meaning they serve dish by dish, They begin with sashimi-style raw beef. If you're unfamiliar with or hesitant about raw meat, this might not be the best choice. However, we thoroughly enjoyed it; the quality of the meat and the preparation process were pure art and dedication. To truly appreciate the experience, familiarity with Japanese culture and language is definitely recommended, as it's the whole experience, not just the food, that makes this place so unique. We lived in Japan before, so it was not an issue for us but it might not be as straightforward for everyone if you do not speak Japanese. I noticed that most of the customers are regulars, and the staff treats them like family. Even though it was our first time, they were super friendly. They came over to talk to us and kindly answered any questions we had. We visited in the afternoon and then returned before 6 PM, and they were kind enough to accommodate us for dinner that same day. We truly appreciated the experience, the food, and their friendship; it was a highlight of our trip. I highly highly recommend this restaurant, they deserve it. I look forward to visiting again.

Waited in line for 40 minutes before opening, Told by a waitress that spoke perfect English that they only serve Japanese speaking customers. We said just give us anything we don’t need to know the price we will take anything she still says no. Cool cool cool.

If you don’t speak Japanese, it’s difficult to eat in this place, there’s no menu, but you constantly need to pick items from the options the owner offers. Otherwise the food is delicious, beef sashimi especially. It’s also pricy, and you won’t know how much each item costs, you will be immersed in authentic Japanese cuisine and dining experience. Again, if you don’t speak the language, it can be challenging and feels unwelcoming.

Well I can’t review food or service unfourtunately because this restaurant is only for Japanese speakers. I can understand this rule and can’t judge that for sure, hovewer it can be great if there is a sign or note about it (e.g. this restaurant is Japanese speakers only, thank you for your understanding). Because we waited around 40 mins front of the restaurant with heavy rain and somehow we got inside but after a few strange “what are they doing here” looks and some one told us.

First the server said welcome, and then I believe when they realized that I’m a foreigner, the server says sorry we are for reservation only, and that I need to contact them 1 month in advance. Please let me know if the rule is not just against foreigners, as I checked the review says I can’t make any reservation for the counter.
