If there were a sixth star, Meatballerz has earned it. Everything we experienced here simply blew us away. This may have been the best Caesar Salad I've ever had. Everything in it was made from scratch: the croutons, the dressing. All house-made. And with a special wine-infused cheese to top the thing off. None of that ordinary parmesan. Caesar himself is going to want a bite of this. But he'll have to get his own.
Meatballers is known for their food-truck excellence. I admittedly came to the game a little late, only discovering this excellence at their brick & mortar location up the street. I had no idea what to expect. I was completely and pleasantly captivated by this whole experience.
Cara served us. She is one of the owners, and it's clear she's all about the food and the flavor. After starting us off with the aforementioned Caesar Salads, we each ordered a meatball sandwich. You pick your meatball (choose one of three), and then you choose how it's served ("In A Hole" means served in bread, "On A Tray" means served on a plate with no additional carbs, and "On A Bed" means it's served on pasta).
So I had a Roma, In A Hole. And it was speech-haltingly good. First of all, that boule was so, so soft. Like you just take a bite of it and you want to whisper the word "soft" to everyone you love. And then you realize there's a meatball in there. And it loves you as much as you love it. Because it is covered in gravy and cheese. (That's sauce and cheese for you folks not acquainted with South Philadelphia.) But yeah, you kind of sit there, enamored of all things In A Hole, because that sandwich is so, so good, that after you stop whispering "soft" to your loved ones, you go home, floating on the excellence of what you just ate, and wondering when you can come back for more.
And then there's dessert. Fritterz, with a Z. These are not the fritterz your parents told you about. These are like deep-fried dough-balls made with Grane ricotta, real vanilla, and a variety of rotating flavors. I've had their key-lime fritterz, and the chocolate chip variety. Crispy on the outside, soft and smooth and sweet on the inside. Served with some whipped cream to round out the experience. You will not be disappointed.
The storefront location is small. Maybe there's room to seat twelve people with four more at the bar. But they do a lot of carry out business, and I wouldn't be surprised if delivery was now an option.
I cannot wait for my next visit. Holler if you're coming with.
