Finally got around to checking out Meats and Foods and let me tell you that was a mistake. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese and it did not disappoint. This seems like a simple order but it is easy to mess up. They nail the balance between the ingredients. I'd rank this sandwich among the best I've had. This is a small place but it is warm and inviting. The owners are friendly and inviting. There is a bit of a wait but I think it's worth it. It's worth checking out.

Google
Beautiful food. I had the opportunity to try the breakfast sandwich and chillito, and both were oozing awesomeness. This is not a place where you will be served immediately, and depending on the backlog, waiting can go up to an hour - but the wait is totally worth it, cause the owner duo make the food with real passion!

Google
I have been looking forward to trying this place for so long. I went online to order ahead because I’ve heard it can be a wait on weekends. The online ordering was unavailable as of 11am. I decided to walk there and there were three couples sitting down eating. One person was ahead of me waiting. I ordered a single chilito and he said it would be 20 mins. No worries, I was in the restaurant biz I know they probably had to make fresh chili or do some online orders. I asked if I could run across the street and come right back. I came back within 5 minutes and proceeded to wait at the counter for 35 additional minutes while I watched two couples who had walked in well after me get served. I walked to the counter and waited to ask the guy the status of my order. It had been ready on the back counter. I asked if I was supposed to come get it, because others around me all had their food brought to them. He said he didn’t see me. Did he not see me or did he not care to look? The place is the size of a storage unit and he looked up into my vicinity multiple times to see people walking through the front door. The vibes were just bad here overall and he seemed to hate being there. This always happens with DC food places when they blow up. They think they can treat customers however. The chili was not worth the weird experience at all and I hope you appreciated the tip bud. ❤️

Google
Meats and Foods is the best local eatery and I cannot wait for their return. They make so much in house and provide such an amazing and high quality product. I’m not sure how folks here can criticize these amazing restauranteurs. I love their vibes. If you like spicy chili, get it with their house made jalapeños, if you wanna call to order or don’t have time for a brief wait, then this is probably not the establishment for you. This isn’t McDonald’s. These folks care, and their foods leaves me feeling happy and well. Thank you for sharing your craft with our community ❤️

Hannah Locke

Google
Cozy little shop with homemade food that is worth the wait. If you don’t order ahead, waits can exceed one hour on the weekend. But if there are seats available, get some coffee and wait in the cute interior decorated with succulents and Garfield memorabilia. The handmade flour tortillas and hot sauce are fantastic. Sundays feature biscuits that you can get for breakfast sandwich on.

Google
Definitely go early! The crispy potato egg and cheese sandwich was so good. The bread was soft and the cheese was perfectly melted! Highly recommend although they do get busy, so get there as close to opening as possible.

Google
While the ambience of meats and foods has an undoubtedly monastic quality, I am afraid to report that the product falls far short of chartreusian. As a chili lover and connoisseur, I was positively shocked at the bland and forgetful non-flavor of this pallidly hued chili, which in addition to its utter lack of depth had about as much heat as a late November evening in Lincoln, Nebraska. If I were to learn there were any actual chilies used in the fabrication of this dish I might feel compelled to pay a visit to my GP to check my tongue for any growths. As for the half smoke, it possessed a solid (if not remarkable) flavor but was ultimately rendered impotent by its snapless casing — while it may be true that tight skins are often the enemy of tumescence in human beings, unfortunately the opposite is true of pork and beef sausages. Pork sausage had great flavor but an unpleasantly gamey mouthfeel, compounded by the squeaky and overly thick strands sauerkraut. Topped with their fantastically peppy and bright yellow mustard though, it is overall a pretty cool thing to put into and around your mouth. Overall the undistinguished offerings of meats and foods shouldn’t be too surprising given the self serious, dischord house like vibes of the space. Chili half smokes are a food of fun, and the proprietors don’ti really seem to be having any.

Google
I hesitate to write this two-star review about (probably) the best single local food item in DC. I believe that is the Chilito. It's a simple delight: chili, cheddar, and a tortilla that was made with a great deal of care. The problem is they are very difficult to get. Meats & Foods is only open from 10-4, Thu-Sun. and on weekends they don't take online or phone orders. I walked over on a Saturday and it was a 1:15 wait. It's a two person operation and they do not move quickly. This would be a 5-star review if they were easier to get. Meats & Foods is an place of unwavering commitment to quality and it's product, but if the customers have such a hard time obtaining the product, then what's the point of having a storefront? One star for service because there really isn't any based on the open hours and wait times. I look forward to another Chilito sometime when the stars align or I take a day off on a Thursday or Friday specifically for Meats & Foods

Yelp
We have been sleeping on Meat and Foods for way too long! We decided to stop by on a Sunday morning, and we were in luck since their biscuits are only available on Sundays. I recommend arriving early to avoid waiting over an hour for your food. Everything is made fresh in-house, and the restaurant is run by a husband-and-wife duo, which is why there can be a wait depending on the number of orders. Our biscuit sandwiches were STUFFED with ingredients, and the meat-to-egg ratio was perfect. The biscuit itself was buttery and flaky. You definitely get your money's worth at Meat and Foods. The space is small but very cozy! It is definitely a neighborhood gem and we have found our new favorite breakfast spot in the city. I can't recommend them enough!

Yelp
Cool place with a ton of Garfield themed decor. There's a very limited amount of seating so most people get their orders to go. Highly recommend getting here early, because they only have one person cooking so unless you're one of the earliest customers (we were first in line), it may take a while to get your food. I definitely recommend the breakfast burrito, which they have on Saturdays. All the ingredients were such high quality (LOVE their tortillas, eggs were perfectly cooked, salsa delicious, hashbrowns added a nice crunch), it's definitely one of the better breakfast burritos I've had. My sister got the halfsmoke sausage with chili, which was also delicious with tons of flavor. Would absolutely return the next time I'm in DC, if I'm around the area.

Yelp
Yes yes yes! This was so amazing! The Chillito was so good! The chilli inside was very tasty and well seasoned. As well as the bacon egg and cheese. The bacon was so crispy and delicious. It is a small place but the vibes were very and I loved their plants and Garfield collection. 10/10 I will be coming back
google avatar

Yelp
big fan of meats and foods. great local spot with nice workers and theres about 4 seats inside, but also solid amount of outdoor seating. my breakfast sandwich was delicious and everyone I was with loved what they got. I feel like their menu has something for everyone from their chilito to their breakfast all day options. the space is tiny but warm and homey feeling.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go for breakfast. Yes there can be a decent wait so plan appropriately. Get a chilito (or veggilito) and enjoy. Breakfast sandwiches are great whether in a potato roll or tortilla. Whole you're there buy a pack of tortillas to cook up at home or some sausages for a rainy day. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
Wouldn't say I love meats but I do love Meats and Foods! There's a lot to unpack about why this place is so great. First, the decor - plants, bobble heads, Garfield, need I say more? Second, the food itself was just what I wanted for a solid, delicious breakfast. The potatoes are fried and oh so delicious and they go great with eggs and cheese for the breakfast bowl! I didn't try the sandwich but that looked good too! Third, it's tucked away in a location where you probably won't find a ton of options otherwise. I don't think I'd ever had passed it before, so don't miss it in its tucked away location off Rhode Island! Finally, it's not too expensive or over-the-top. It's just the right amount of good food, good vibes, and good costs all around.

Yelp
Yes. Yes. Yes. Go no place else for high quality comfort food. They use real butter!! (Three people said this in line.) Scott, the owner, has displayed grace and style in the whole joint. For a smaller footprint it's super clean. Food is 100% delicious. Garfield approves! IYKYK

Yelp
Literally so fabulous I have their hours memorized. Don't sleep on the ham and cheese

Yelp
Best breakfast sandwich in DC. It's a small kitchen which means orders take a little longer so I recommend calling ahead!
google avatar

Jacob M.

Yelp
I really wanted to try this DC classic, the "half smoke" before I left. It did not disappoint, I only wish the bun was toasted! I recommend adding mustard.

MK N.

Yelp
Fantastic little spot with great vegetarian options. We also bought tortillas to go that are the best we have found! Highly recommend and we will be back!

Yelp
Surprised I've never written a review: the menu is small, but good. My go to is the egg cheese and sausage on the potato roll. They melt the cheese on the griddle, there's always some crust that is amazing. It's simple but they do it so well that it's special. The lunch sausages are also great, I just always come back to the breakfast sandwich bc it's the best breakfast sausage I've had in DC, plus crispy gooey cheese. The couple that runs it are friendly and efficient: I've never gotten the "too cool" vibe you get sometimes at Big Bear. I like the vibe inside but it's small so I always bring it home to eat.

Yelp
I came here in search of DC's best half smoke. The half smoke is a DC delicacy. I love mine with chili and mustard. When I arrived, I saw that they were only doing online to-go orders from the door. I placed an order online and waited. The only online ordering system said 30 minutes, but an employee poked his head out and told me it would be 7-8 minutes. It was a beautiful day, so I didn't mind waiting. Finally, my half smoke came out. It was perfectly packaged and the roll was perfectly steamed, which us a make or break for me. The sausage was perfectly cooked with the perfect ratio of meats which gave it a great texture. By culinary standards, it was perfect. BUT a half smoke is not about culinary execution. It's regional street food and dive fare. The key to a good half smoke is a great char on the outside, and a flavor-packed chili. This fell slightly short up against some other half smokes I've had in this area. A little more salt and fat in the chili and a harder char would've made this perfect. It still made for a solid lunch. Next time I will ask for it cooked hard and add ketchup for depth of flavor.

Yelp
I was so excited to try their Sunday breakfast biscuit after seeing the great reviews, but it was a lot of a letdown unfortunately with 2.5/3 stars. I got the egg and cheese biscuit with potato. The biscuit itself was severely bland and lacking flavor and essentially disintegrated and dissolved in the sandwich. The potato was essentially balls of hashbrowns stuffed into the sandwich that weren't conducive to being in a sandwich, so I picked those off. When the hashbrowns were separated from the sandwich they were pretty solid. The egg had absolutely zero flavor so I added some seasoning at home to make it more edible. Im not sure if I got a bad batch or if this is the standard, but my one tip for them is to just season more. The decor of the restaurant was really nice and if you wanted to, you can sit and eat there with a small group. I would also like to try their halfsmokes at some point since it seems that what they're really good at making.

Jack A.

Yelp
Bacon egg and cheese is legit. Gonna come back and try more. Inside is simple and cool too.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
5 from me. Cool neighborhood spot, very straightforward with a small menu. They serve/sell sausages. Everything is priced at $6.50 I think. We tried the halfsmoke (added chili), and the chorizo. Both were delicious but the chorizo was the winner here. We also had a breakfast sandwich, which I would order every weekend if their hours weren't so weird (open at noon???). But will definitely be back for lunch on weekends, a quick, cheap, easy place to go that hits the spot.
google avatar

Bhavana C.

Yelp
Love Meats & Foods - have gotten bacon and sausage from here to make dishes at home, as well as the biscuits on Sundays. Everything is really reasonably priced and tastes amazing. So glad that this place is in the neighborhood!

Yelp
I wanted to go to check out Dr. Dre and his unneccessarily expensive headphones, and all of his sworn enemies that he writes those raps about. Obviously I came to the wrong place. I should have gone to "Beats And Feuds." Oh well. Definitely a 5. Easily. Even based on the food alone it'd probably be a 5 for how imaginative it is. I really loved the sausages, I mean they weren't off the charts amazing, but they were tasty and juicy and different. The chorizo was prob the best, the others a bit bland perhaps by my standards (I love spicy sausages and British sausages and cute boy sausages oh wait), but they were all hot and yum. Despite this place being a hipster place, the prices are pretty good. It's kind of in a bad area, but then so are you if you're in my bedroom. Needed to buy plastic chairs. Should have gone to "Seats & Foods." Needed a new faux wood fire. Should have gone to "Heats & Foods." Wanted to be really submissive and pathetic. Should have gone to "Feets & Foods." Let's do some more. Wanted to meet Mr Sampras and Mr Townsend. Should have gone to "Petes & Foods." Wanted to get some soccer shoes. Should have gone to "Cleats & Foods." Was hoping to meet a sheep (I'm from Wales). Should have gone to "Bleats & Foods." The real star of the show here is the employees, and the service. Truly absoutely wonderful. It was close to closing time but they not only served me but gave me some extras because they were throwing them away. Including a free extra sausage. They were totally fine with serving me late (and I called ahead and they picked up and told me in advance they'd be fine with it). Some very lovely people running this place and they make some pretty good sausages. Definitely somewhere that sausage lovers should come and check out, like, asap and stuff. Oh, and: Wanted to meet Donald Trump. Should have gone to "Deceits & Foods." Wanted to meet Bill Clinton. Should have gone to "Cheats & Foods." Wanted to meet the U.S. Constitution. Should have gone to "Obsoletes & Foods."

Yelp
Everything about this place is the ideal comfort lifestyle. Their specialty is sausage, but they also have chilis, egg and cheese sandwiches, frito pie, and breakfast burritos/chilitos/veggie-litos. There are seven options for sausages: half-smoke, chorizo, salt and pepper chicken, chickendog, garlic pork, smoked spicy chicken, and veggie sausage. You can add bacon, cheese, beef or vegetarian chili, sauerkraut, jalapenos, or a Gordy's pickle as toppings. I chose the half-smoke and topped it with vegetarian chili. Super delicious, particularly the vegetarian chili! I also was able to try their breakfast burrito, which was surprisingly tasty. In fact, my California-born and raised fiancé said that it was the best breakfast burrito he's had in the area. We were able to enjoy our half-smokes and burrito inside, which I think is the ideal situation for optimal freshness. However, I will admit that there is not much seating inside or outside. Try to come at an off-peak time! Aside from the delicious meats and foods, the decor is absolutely on point. There are tons of vintage McDonald's Garfield mugs that have been repurposed as plant holders, as well as other Garfield toys scattered everywhere. I love all the plants in the little space too.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Sunday biscuits are the best. For $3.50 you can get a delicious sausage biscuit. The meat has a tad of spice while being complimented by a delicious jam. So good. You cannot go wrong with the sausages. Put some toppings on it for the full effect. On top of all this, you can wash it down with a cheap beer ($3 for a natty bo). If you want something cheap and delicious, this is the place.
google avatar

Erin P.

Yelp
This place really should be called "Meats" since there really isn't any other type of "Foods" being served. Except beer and chips and frito pie (which is meat I suppose). The sausages are great (I am partial to the chicken sausages) and the Sunday Sausage Biscuit is fabulous. The biscuit is somewhat ho-hum, but the actual sausage is so flavorful. My boyfriend said it was "the best sausage" he has ever had. Update! This spot now offers $5 breakfast burritos on the weekends (until they sell out). Can't wait!
google avatar

Farhat K.

Yelp
Came here for a quick bite and boy was it tasty. It's a small store with some seating inside and outside. They had some cool music playing. Luckily, I was able to snag a seat after I ordered beef chili with cheese and a halfsmoke sausage. The food was ready within 20 mins and I chowed it down. I really, really enjoyed my chili. It tasted so savory with the meaty flavor of the beef and cheese combining to form a party in my mouth. I would probably get more cheddar cheese cause I wanted it in each bite of my chili. The halfsmoke was good. I took parts of my chili and added it to the hotdog to make it taste even better. I would just order it with chili next time since I liked it so much. I guess I would like to try their Chorizo next time and the frito pie.
google avatar

Bradley S.

Yelp
We came across this joint on a 5 bucks or less grubbing in DC. I decided to go with a sloppy joe and a hot dog. Have you ever had chili? Like good chili, where you can taste the meat and beans and the sauce isn't to overwhelming? That's what this sloppy joe was like, just heaven in your mouth. The hotdog was great too, my buddy told me he wished he had gotten it aswell. The two owners were working and they had some regulars that were there. They just chit chatted the entire time and felt like we lived there. Had a very homey feeling.

Keller G.

Yelp
This place is so freakin' good. I am obsessed with their veggie breakfast sandwich, and I've probably ordered it 30 times. The service is great; the restaurant itself is calm. Order ahead -- they sell out so quickly.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
I've been a frequenter of Meats & Foods for some time but today is the first day I had the bacon, egg, & cheese biscuit and I'm so happy they have them now. This is not a small portion for the faint of heart. biscuits are ONLY available on Sundays. I bring all of my out of town visitors here for the half smoke but now I can bring them for a truly great set of breakfast options. They're doing 100% online ordering so be sure to order ahead and follow the pickup instructions. Glad to support them during these weird times.
google avatar

Rosa A.

Yelp
This place is amazing! I am a vegetarian who found some amazing options with the vegetarian sausage and vegetarian chili. Tastes amazing, so flavorful- I highly recommend

Michelle L.

Yelp
MEATS AND FOODS MY RELIGION! My go to weekly, sometimes bi weekly. The best breakfast!! Owners are awesome, spot is chill, prices are lit AND food is amazing!
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
Staff are super nice and friendly! Food is great! Personally like their sausages best (half smoke and chorizo). Recommend the jalapenos, sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup toppings - lots of flavors with a kick.

Emma D.

Yelp
Kind of oily & flavorless. Had the breakfast burrito & the tater tots. I can't speak to the other items on the menu but both of the things I tried were nothing great at all. The inside was very cute though.
google avatar

Lina T.

Yelp
My friends and I came here and split a Chorizo Sandwich with cheese and jalapenos added and a Chicken Jalapeno Sausage Sandwich with chili added. The Chorizo has a strong, spicy kick to it, make sure you have a drink with this meal! I love spicy food, this was my favorite dish that I tried here. The Chicken Jalapeno Sausage was good as well, but not as spicy as the Chorizo. I regret not adding the chili topping to the Chorizo, the chili was so good. It is really meaty and hearty, perfect for a meal during cold weather :) The staff are polite and you can actually see them cooking and preparing everything. My only complaint is that there is limited space and seating, my friends and I were lucky to score some seats, but I imagine most people taking their orders to go since there are only 6 available seats inside the shop. I love the decor inside the shop, very nostalgic with the animated condiment bottles (like the dancing ones they used to show in old movie trailers :P) and Garfield cartoons throughout the shop. If you haven't tried this spot, I would recommend it for a quick, cheap bite to eat :)
google avatar

Sidney H.

Yelp
I mean, it's called MEATS & foods. Two of my favorite things, what's not to like? Only giving it a 4/5 because it's menu isn't all encompassing when it says "foods" but I did really love this place (I also just love the name of it so much I literally bought a sweatshirt with the name on it). I got the half smoke and it was delicious and reasonably priced and I definitely want to come back and try more things. My only advice would be if you're trying to like actually sit there I suggest you go either when it's nice out or on an off time because there isn't much seating inside!

Vicki C.

Yelp
I was feeling a little post-party hurt. Figured I needed some hearty food to cure my ailments. Placed my order online conveniently for the chilito ($3.64) and a sausage, egg & cheese sandwich ($5.45) for pick up. I ordered the chilito out of curiosity. I learned a chilito was the bastard child of chili and a burrito. Not my cup of tea, but I'm sure it's for someone who loves chili. The sandwich sausage was made in house; which is to be expected of a place named meats and foods. The interior was heavy on the hipster aesthetic the service exuded we're too cool to serve mainstreamers vibes.
google avatar

Lyndsey W.

Yelp
Update: so either they changed their buns or the person on the phone who told me that the bun here was vegan doesn't know what vegan means. That's on me I guess, I usually explain it means no milk or eggs. Still bumps my review down because of the wrong info, plus it's frustrating that that one change could open it up to those who can't do dairy. The info below is out of date: So... Meats and Foods, obvi not a place for vegetarians or vegans right?! Wrong! There's a vegetarian sausage and a veggie chilli that are BOMB. Seriously just put one on top of the other. Spicy, savory, sausagy, delic.
google avatar

Zenie N.

Yelp
Great little local sausage shop. It's tiny inside so you may wanna just take your stuff to go and grill it at home. The half smokes are great and their chili is awesome. I can't think of a better place to get fresh made sausage...
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Love this place!! Trying out vegetarian and they had a veggie sausage and veggie-chilito and both were phenomenal! They also have keto options so sausage without a bun in a bowl with chili and my boyfriend loved it! My brother lives around the block and comes here often, can't wait to come back!! Staff is super friendly and helpful too!
google avatar

Austin G.

Yelp
After all the hype, my Tuesday night dinner buddy and I had to check this place out. Here's our rating: 5 stars for atmosphere. It's on the corner of a busy street in the fun, Shaw neighborhood. It's a small, neighborhood shop with limited seating inside along the windows and one painted picnic table outside. 4 stars for food. The menu is very small and you may need to order two sausages to be full. I ordered the chicken sausage and the chorizo. The chorizo is amazing!
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
I have the pleasure of having this place within my work area. I come here whenever I can. Some people might say a $6 sausage is too much, but I say, for quality and deliciousness, that's a bargain! Granted, it's a favorite of the average hipster, but well, it is within the land of hipsters. The owners are very cool, friendly people and I just love coming here. I normally get the chorizo, but today I tried the half smoke. I think I'm still in love with the chorizo more, but the half smoke is delicious too! Yummy, yummy in my tummy! One sandwich is enough to satiate me for hours! Get it with peppers and onions!

Yelp
I was really excited to check out Meats and Foods, as I've heard about their famous 'Frito Pie.' They have been around since '11 and is DC-originated, known for their daily handmade sausages (!). They have a variety of different kinds of sausages (halfsmoke, lemon-basil chicken, chorizo, bratwurst, banger, Italian, turmeric, lemongrass, veggie, garlic, poblano, andouille, salt & pepper, and cheddar bratwursts), as well as other items such as sandwiches, soups, pickles, biscuits, and bacon (for pick-up only). I tried their Chili Halfsmoke and a Frito Pie - the halfsmoke was okay - you can tell that it was made fresh, but I just wasn't a fan of the flavor. The chili also was just underwhelming as well, but I did appreciate the generous amount on the sausage! The Frito Pie came in a small chili cup container - it had seasoned ground meat, scallions, and Frito chips. A little sandwich bag full of melted cheese also came with - I was a little confused, as I think the Frito chips should have come separately as well, so that it doesn't get all mushy (which it did). I did enjoy the ground beef, as it was seasoned and tasted yummy. The staff here are very friendly and oh-so-nice, and the place itself is very hip and cute (the 'mural' of the hot dog by the entrance, squirting ketchup on its head, was a little creepy, but I think most people like it AHAHAHA). There is extremely-limited seating inside (6 stools at the low/high counters), but most orders are to-go. You can also opt to order online for convenience. I'd love to come back and try out their other items, such as the Chilito, the Sloppy Joe, and some of their sausages to grill up. +known for their Frito Pie (dine-in if you can!) +housemade sausages, made daily +awesome and friendly staff :D +limited seating (6 stools; counter) +free residential 2-hour parking on 2nd St NW

Yelp
Great food for decent prices. Their specialty is handmade sausages ($6 each) and they offer them in chicken, pork , or smoked half pork half beef. They also serve chilli (which I didn't try) and beer/wine/soft drinks. I ordered the smoked half pork/beef and it was amazing! I do not usually eat pork, but heard it was a customer fave, and it did not disappoint. While I waited for my food, they even offered me a sample of the pepper chicken sausage and it also was delicious; I will definitely be ordering that next time. Meats & foods is a cute little space in a small comfy setting. The 2 owners are also the cooks and servers and they gave exceptional customer service. A great way to start off my DC trip! - Happy customer

Yelp
We came there today in 95 degree weather (8/4/2019) and the guy working there told us to leave right when we walked in. The guy told us we weren't allowed to have a dog there. Alright, I'm ok with that. So my boyfriend proceeded to walk outside with our dog. Then suddenly the guy working there quickly walked towards the door to try to escort us out. We were already heading to the door.. you don't have to make it such a big deal and treat us like crap. I was so annoyed and offended that I didn't have an appetite anymore and left. We were about to give you our hard earned money and left sine we felt like a store who doesn't treat their customers with respect shouldn't get our business. This was our first and last time here.

Yelp
This review is for takeout. I am pretty sure that if I were to return and dine in that my experience would be completely different and I would probably give them 4 or 5 stars. I came in on a Sunday morning around lunch time. I got the salt/pepper chicken with chili and cheese. After ordering, I noticed people ordering a sausage biscuit which sounded very intriguing (but not on the menu). I decided to up the ante and order the biscuit as well. The cashier was nice and gave me glass of water while I waited for the takeout. I think the total for both items with the extra toppings was around $11. Upon getting home, I opened the bag and the salt/pepper chicken sausage sandwich was very soggy due to the cheese and chili (may be my fault for ordering this as takeout but they could have warned me!). As you can imagine, eating it was very messy and a little less than enjoyable. However, the meat it self delicious. The sausage casing was a little chewy and I wish it wasn't as thick but not a major complaint. Good sandwich but I wish it wasn't so soggy! The sausage biscuit was delicious, even after takeout. Not sure why it is not on the menu or if I just missed it but it was one of the best biscuits I have had in DC. I would highly recommend getting this! I will probably give them another shot but I will NOT get any of the sausage sandwiches to go.

Yelp
For takeaway sausages and sauerkraut: ultimately very average sausage and below average kraut. We got half smokes and salt and pepper chicken. The kraut is not spiced and may better be described as a pickled cabbage. Save yourself a trip and get your specialty sausage and kraut at a higher end grocery store.

Yelp
Interesting concept--it's just sausage sandwiches and chili (meat and meatless) for sale. At least that's all they were offering in terms of hot, prepared foods when I dropped by. Also chips, soft drinks and beer can be purchased too. Uncooked sausages and raw, sliced bacon are also available to take home however customers have to buy a certain preset amount. Frankly (pun intended) I think this option is perhaps the greatest value. Overall I give their sausages high marks. They are hand-made with delicate casings that I prefer. Half smoke has a full pork flavor with a zing that isn't over powering. The chicken sausage was pretty respectable and I generally detest chicken dogs. Really lovely folks running the place. They aim to please--a nice, inviting vibe here. It's quaint, and cleverly laid out; makes maximum use of its unusual space. Lots of young males in line--need I say more? I just follow the men to the best meats in town. It's reasonably priced for DC. It's a redux of the old hot dog stand, only these substantial sausages are worth a drive. Plus the place is clean and modern. I think of their location as being more a part of Shaw neighborhood than anything else, but whatever the actual real estate survey may say, Meat and Foods is a new player to watch.

Yelp
Meats & Foods, my two favorite things! In one convenient store! Newly opened! How perfect?!? Meats & Foods is the retail outlet of 13th St Meats, a purveyor of upscale sausages. I'd been eagerly awaiting their first brick and mortar store, which opened over the summer. Typically, I like to have a few visits under my belt before writing a review, so my thoughts may change if I go back, but here are my first impressions. INTERIOR: The store itself is really nicely set-up for the small space that they have. There is seating for six, plus a bit of standing room for ordering. The seats look out at Florida Ave, and are comfortable for wolfing down a quick sandwich. I really dig the artwork. It turned out really nicely. MENU: There are a number of sausage sandwich options (menu board in picture). They're $6 each. Chili is +$1 and a pickle is +$.50. Onions and peppers are complimentary. Chips are $1, and there are a few packaged beverages and beers available. Looking at the menu, I thought the prices were fair, but I don't actually think that's the case after eating. ORDERING: You line up to order at the front desk. There's a bit of awkwardness, as it's hard to tell exactly who is in line, and who is waiting (and waiting and waiting) for their food. Once I got that squared away, I ordered a bratwurst, which took 20 MINUTES(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What the heck !!!?????!!!) from ordering until I got the food. I can understand waiting in line for a bit to get great food, but waiting 20 minutes for a sausage to be grilled is egregious. Ain't nobody got time for that. FOOD: The bratwurst was totally fine, but certainly not anything above what I'm used to grabbing from cheapo food carts throughout our fine city. I practically grew up eating brats and half smokes from those carts, so maybe my nostalgia has the best of me. That said, it's borderline offensive to me that something that costs $2.50 or $3, delivered in 2-3 minutes on a street corner is suddenly $6, artisanal, and 20m to prepare. I don't often complain about prices, because I know that rent, labor, and everything else here is outrageously expensive, but in this case, the product is twice the price and certainly not twice the quality. Overall: 3/5. If the wait had been shorter, I'd probably go to 4/5, since it is a decent brat. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to return, since you can get way better quality meat and twice as much food for a couple bucks more at DCity just a few blocks down Florida Ave. OR, you could go right across the street and chow down on some delectable Korean fried chicken at Kochix. If you want the best value/quality half-smokes in the city, look no further than the Grille at Langston Golf Course. But, then again, I realize that the target demo for M&F is far different than that of the decidedly ungentrified and non artisan/local/high falutin' Langston Grille.

Yelp
Soooo goood! I can't believe I had not visited in the six months that I lived in Bloomingdale. It's great. I got the half smoke with grilled onions and peppers and jalapeños and a beer. The chilito was amazing and all their options that are Vegetarian are made for Vegans (went with a friend who is vegan). So overall great little place that serves a variety of sausages!

Yelp
As a vegetarian it's not someplace one would ever think to stop into for a bite but I was hungry and wandering from the post office on RI Avenue headed back home. I decided to step in to see if they had anything to offer and was surprised that they did which was pretty awesome. It's small but the staff made the place feel super comfortable and it's a cozy environment. The energy reminded me of a spot I'd find to eat a quick bite in Richmond, where everyone that worked there and the people I saw coming in all knew each other and had pleasant vibes. It was nice. It turns out they have a pretty phenomenal vegetarian sausage sandwich that I devoured happily. They even had veggie chili. There were some additional veggie options that I wasn't able to check out but that I'm sure were delicious too!

Yelp
Great handmade sausages! Sorry, vegetarians but this place ain't for you. Tried the classic half smoke with thinly sliced peppers & onions on top. Very yummy. I felt like I tasted the careful crafting that was put into this simple meal. They even gave us a try of the lemon grass chicken sausage. Wasn't ready for the spiceyness but it was good!

Yelp
We tried the half smoke with chili, the chicken and pepper and the spicy chorizo with sauerkraut. All were the same price so just choose your preference. The staff was very nice to let us sample the poblano as we wait. The store was clean and cute. Will definitely return! They also serve cans of beer for four or five dollars.
