I attended Mecha Noodle Bar’s grand opening night as the first 100 people in line got $100 gift card! Luckily, I was #92. Smart marketing and way to engage the Fishtown audience.
It’s hard to judge what the average customer will experience since there was a DJ, entertainment, etc. so I will focus mostly on the food and drinks. The ambiance itself is great though, I loved the interior design. Bar area and 2 different dining rooms offer plenty of space.
I started with the One Way Ticket cocktail. Refreshing and balanced, but it was 2/3 filled. Even if that was the correct amount for the drink, it should be served in a different cup because the presentation led me to believe I’m paying for something I’m not getting.
For apps, we got the poutine and bao. The poutine had a japanese curry sauce that was delicious, but the cheese curds were extremely cold and the fries were not crispy enough. It’s a pass. The smashburger bao wasn’t bad or good, unmemorable. The KFC fried chicken bao was the star of the show. Gochujang and kewpie added such great flavor and the chicken was fried well.
For entrees, we got the pho bo and ramen curry laksa. Meat in both dishes were underseasoned - or maybe not seasoned at all. I understand the broth should provide most of the seasoning, but the meat could’ve provided a more complex or aromatic taste. The noodles were cooked perfectly. I highly recommend adding the sriracha, hoison and soy sauce provided at the table. Once all three were added, the dishes were good.
Service was pretty slow but it was opening night so I wasn’t focused on that. I will of course come back to spend my $100 gift card, I hear they have great happy hour specials. There’s some menu items like the stir fry and other pho/ramen I would like to try. I won’t have a final opinion until I go on a regular night.
