18 Places To See Uncanny Specimens of Wax Anatomy

"The Medical History Museum of the Hamburg University Teaching Hospital houses a fascinating collection of historic medical instruments, microscopes, teaching models, and materials, wax moulages of various skin diseases, and other oddities. Housed in the beautiful 1926 Fritz-Schumacher House on the campus of the teaching hospital, this museum tracks the evolution of modern medicine from the 19th century to the present day. Opened in 2010, the museum is part of the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine. Its permanent exhibition “The Birth of Modern Medicine,” explores the evolution of medical research, ethics, diagnostics, and therapeutic care through a variety of archival materials. The museum does not shy away from complicated and disturbing eras in medical history. It includes a display dealing with the role that doctors and nurses played in the Nazi’s state-sponsored eugenics programs. Telling the story of Irma Sperling, a young Hamburg victim, the exhibit attempts to give voice to the thousands of people murdered by the Nazis because they were not considered mentally or physically fit to live in the homeland. On display in this exhibit is a “Binetarium,” a box-like device which Nazi doctors believed could measure intelligence. The museum also houses one of the largest collection of historic moulages (wax models of body parts afflicted with different diseases and deformities). However, there are only 30 on display to the public. Most of these are graphic illustrations of the ravages of syphilis, often modeled without the patient’s consent.   Visitors can also see a large dissection hall built in 1911. Here, medical students dissected cadavers on eight stone slab tables, in a surprisingly bright and serene open hall. Bright light was indispensable for pathological studies. At the time when the dissection hall was designed, electricity was in its infancy, and still not very reliable or bright. To combat this fact, the hall was cleverly designed to let in a maximum amount of natural light. Remarkably, the room was so ideal for dissections that it was used until 2006. These fascinating exhibits are reminders that the discipline of medicine is an evolving art, which can be used for great good—or great evil." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Very interesting. A very interesting museum with plenty to look at. Only some of the museum is in English so you need to know German or have a translate app. The staff member was very friendly and helpful. Only 4 stars as I think 6 Euro is a bit pricy for the experience in my opinion

Small but very interesting museum. I found the price (6€) ok. The temporal exhibition about pandemics was only in German. The general exhibition was in English and German. I found the "Medizinverbrechen im NS" and "Moulagen - Krankheiten in Wachs" sections specially interesting. There are toilets in the museum.

It was 6€ for guests, 4€ for students. Great museum, not a must-see but still a good place to visit.

Half of the museum is translated. For the other half, they provide some English leaflets. VERY interesting to see the history of medicine in Germany through pictures, devices and models. I enjoyed it even though I don’t belong to the health sector. About 1-2h visit.

While we got a pamphlet with translation and some of the "regular" stuff was translated it was a bit lackluster. Super nice personal that helped us out though. Wouldn't recommend if you don't speak German (though some things are translated)

Went here on a day when entry was free and it was packed. Spent about an hour and a half and found it very interesting, the special exhibition was on postcards and photos sent during the first world war from field hospitals. It's not exactly a museum suited for small kids since there are a few graphical displays of bad infections, death, etc.but if you have some time to kill while waiting at the hospital (it's on the grounds of the UKE campus) or if you are generally interested in medicine, then I can recommend this museum.

Fascinating history of illnesses, vaccines, diseases. Not all is translated to English though. The information is very accurate, and it is Fascinating to learn about it all.

Nice place and great exhibition! And also very polite and kind personal. Museum will be extremely interesting for people somehow connected to medicine. The only problem is museum doesn`t work during working days, it`s only opend on weekends. And that all sings on the second floor are in German. English translation one can find only on the 1st floor.
