The Boston Area’s Best Falafel, Shawarma, and Kebabs | Eater Boston

"A popular lunch spot in North Cambridge, Mediterranean Grill is Persian-influenced and serves, as one would expect, many grilled meat offerings. The chicken and beef soltani has one skewer of chicken and one skewer of beef koobideh, the best of both worlds. Mediterranean Grill is open for takeout and delivery (direct ordering, DoorDash, Grubhub, Uber Eats)."

Mediterranean Grill was a solid choice for a casual bite. The food had all the right flavors, but nothing that really stood out. Service was friendly and quick. Overall, it's a reliable spot for Mediterranean staples, but don't expect anything surprising.

Google
Delicious Persian food, tahdiq (fried bread and rice at the bottom of pot) which the sell covered in either gheyme or ghorme sabzi is very delicious and a large portion. Also Koobide kabab was very delicious. I wish they would add half gheyime and half ghorme to their Tahdiq, like they do in California and Texas, but they don't. They serve Tahdiq with only one sauce and it is still VERY AMAZING. The waiter, Isma, was also very nice, professional and had a superb hospitality. We will definitely go back for more.

Excellent outdoor patio, and delicious kebabs. The chicken one was especially good!

I visited this restaurant based on a friend's recommendation, and it was my first time trying Persian cuisine. I had dishes that included chicken, beef, lamb, and rice, and it was a fantastic experience. The flavors of the food were generally very satisfying. The baklava I had for dessert at the end was incredibly sweet and delicious. The server was also very friendly and provided excellent guidance.

We love this place! Juicy kabobs, lots of rice, grilled tomatoes. Mmmm Mmm good. We looked for a place in the Boston area to satisfy a craving for Mediterranean food. We found the place here at Mediterranean Grill. We ordered hummus, and the platter for 2. There is so much great food that is included in the platter for 2. All of the food is freshly made. Service was outstanding. Great food. Superb service. Walkable distance to the Davis T-stop on the Red line. Kudos to the restaurant for the food and the service. Enjoy!

Google
Delicious food! Very freshly made. We had the Mirza ghasemi, falafel plate, shrimp kabob and chicken kabob tasted out of the world :) Don’t forget to try their rich creamy Persian ice cream if you like pistachios.

Google
We got the tadig with gorme sabzi and let me tell you, I’m a persian and this place’s gorme sabzi tasted like my grandmother’s! It was mind blowing, I liked the grape leaves, the lamb shank, and the persian ice cream as well. I wasn’t a fan of the kebabs though. The staff were incredible

Google

Yelp
I'm here at least a couple times a week! Terrific food! Great variety, great flavors, friendly staff. I'll be back! (Obviously)

Yelp
An okay local place to grab takeout, but definitely not worth going out of your way. Baba ganoush (7.99) was tasty enough, but not very smokey. However, the accompanying pita was hard and awful. Zereshk rice with chicken (19.99) had chicken that was way too salty, but the rice was nice and the sweetness contrasted well with the chicken.

Yelp
Freshly prepared food and friendly service! I pooped in while walking to a friend's place and the shrimp kabob platter (subbed rice for tabbouleh) was great! Nice flavors and filling without being heavy. I'll definitely return & enjoy the patio again (visited in late May).

Yelp
FOOD 5/5 I was out on a walk and saw that they were open. I've been looking for a falafel joint near Davis since I just moved here. And I found it!! This is probably on par with my other falafel joints in the Bay Area and San Diego. Seasoning, texture, and sauce is on point. Also had the dolmas/ grape leaves which were pretty decent. It's not on par with my other dolmas joints though. SERVICE 5/5 Everything was provided for take out. AMBIANCE 5/5 Great authentic decor. PRICE 4/5 Slightly more expensive than my other falafel joints but it's worth it.

Yelp
We really liked the barg (tenderloin) kebob , it was tender and soft. Ash reshteh didn't taste like traditional ash but was Ok. Rice was a little dry. Staff did not speak Farsi but overall good experience! Liked the hot tea and baqlava for desert.

Yelp
Ordered takeout. The shrimp kabob over white rice and grilled veggies was delicious. Also got a side of lentil soup. It was a generous portion and also very good. I will be ordering from here again.

Yelp
Came here on a Wednesday afternoon for a quick dinner with some family. They were raving about this place so I just had to try it. We shared the Mediterranean plate which came with saffron rice, a skewer of chicken, beef strip and ground beef along with two fire roasted tomatoes. Our meal was accompanied with the homemade hummus, side of falafels, and what I might remember as 9. Shirazi 2. Kashk - O - Bademjaan. Having had dabbled in trying to make homemade hummus, theirs was well beyond what I have been able to accomplish. What seems so simple has such great depth in flavor and perfect for their pita. The 9. Shirazi and 2. Kashk - O - Bademjaan we're also perfect sides for the proteins, carbs and pita. I found the Shirazi to be an amalgamation of a Greek salad and pico de Gallo. For the Kashk - O - Bademjaan, from what I've had before, it was similar to another Greek dish, tzatziki being yogurt based and light. Out of the chicken, and both forms of steak, I enjoyed the Beef Koobideh Kabob my favorite however all were deliciously seasoned and tender. The most disappointing dish was the falafel as it was definitely on the drier side and more simply seasoned relying heavily on the garlic sauce on the side. Before leaving, we had two orders of the baklava which were about a square inch each. Which considering that it's soaked in honey, was enough for a single serving each. It was in between crunchy and soft while not being overwhelming in sweetness. I would have appreciated a bit more of a chew to it however. Overall, great food but very slow service. My friend told me their other visits were more efficient since someone else had been working at the time. Will definitely come again and get more of everything!

Yelp
Really tasty gem in Boston area- I had salad with chicken- owner gave me grape leaves and hummus to try (my favorite)!

Yelp
This is a neighborhood jam. The food was delicious, the prices were reasonable and good service. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
I love the Persian food at this cute little place. My husband is Persian, and we've taken our in-laws here and they all rave about the food, with my brother-in-law calling the Gormeh sabzi (an herb, kidney bean and beef stew, which is kind of like the favorite dish of Iran) "heavenly." The tah dig/crispy rice served under the stew is the beloved bread tah dig, which means pieces of lavash are layered under the rice and crisp up with the rice, rather than rice alone. We've also loved the beef koodideh kabob and barg/marinated filet mignon and the juicy chicken kabob. Needless to say at any Persian restaurant, RICE IS QUEEN! And the rice here is excellent. They have traditional saffron rice but also the lesser seen on menus herb rice (sabzi polow) and zereshk polow (rice with tart berries almost like a cranberry - good with chicken). The sides we always order are the shallot yogurt to dip our bread and the eggplant sides, which are roasted l, mashed eggplant with garlic and tomato and drizzled with kashk/whey. I also love the spinach yogurt dip. Also the salad Shirazi which is tomatoes cukes and lemon with herbs. So refreshing and I also put a little on a little of my rice. They have beer and wine but also the best Persian tea which goes so well with the food or perhaps dessert? Baklava or Persian saffron ice cream. They have other middle eastern dishes on the menu too like hummus and falafel (because most Americans confuse Persian food, I think - hummus and falafel aren't Persian - but they look good!) There are just about eight tables with more outdoors in good weather and they seem to do a brisk to-go business. Not fancy by any means but so authentic and good! Why aren't you there now?

Yelp
Marvelous Mediterranean food!! We placed our order at the counter, and it was ready about 20 minutes later. Their location is great, and we waited on a rocking bench nearby in Trolley Square. When we took our food home, we found that it's a great portion for the price! The falafel salad was fresh and came with two dressings (I really liked the tahini one). Only two falafel balls though, so it was mostly salad (lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, feta). The falafel was really good - flavorful and not dry. The star of the meal was the Persian lamb shank! It's served with a dill lima bean rice and also came with thin bread. Tender, flavorful meat that fell off the bone! The lamb sauce is tomatoey and thick, which tasted great on the bread as well. I would get this again in a heartbeat. And the best part: we had enough leftovers to enjoy it again the next night! To top off our meal, we got the saffron rice pudding, which was a really nice take on a classic. Served cold, it was flavorful with a nice texture, topped with cinnamon and loaded with slivers of almonds. Would also get again!

Yelp
I never want to be the person to complain. But. My wife and I just ordered and not only did she receive the wrong order, there was plastic wrap in my salad. I actually tried calling to say something and they left my on hold for 10 minutes. I tried calling back but because they forgot about me, they never hung up the phone.

Yelp
Simple, satisfying, and reliable, Mediterranean Grill stayed true to its roots in traditional Mediterranean cusine, delivering a healthy and delicious meal. My partner and I decided to try their chicken and beef barg kabobs, and were pleasantly surprised to recieve a free side of hummus and pita bread with our meal. (They were running a promotion at the time, not sure how often they do this.) We enjoyed everything, & will keep this place in mind for future meals when we need something quick, simple, yet relatively healthy. A great choice for those looking to shed unwanted pandemic pounds!

Yelp
Very glad I came to yelp to figure out what to order. I got the lamb shank (pictured) and it basically fell off the bone. So soft and flavorful and delicious, and paired very well with the mint rice on the side. Would love to come back here again. They do dine-in and take-out, and we sat outside in a sunny spot. Great find!

Yelp
Incredible Persian food!!! So fresh and delicious!!! We got a feast here on New Years eve. Wow!!! Everything was perfect!!! Boston has a bunch of great Persian restaurants but this place is the best!!!
google avatar

Yelp
WOW!!! Bah Bah Bah! his is some of the best Iranian food in Boston. Their menu has so many amazing choices. We started with Kashk-o-bademjan and it was DELICIOUS, and served with fresh pita. For the main course I had chicken and beef soltani. I was blown away. It was served with a huge delicious portion of rice and grilled tomatos. The meat was cooked to absolute perfection. It was so tender and just tasted like heaven. I was able to take half of my plate home for a second meal. I cannot wait to come back here and try everything!!! Merci!!

Yelp
Not only is everything we ordered delicious, but plentiful. Meats on skewers are tender, juicy, and flavorful, the eggplant dish is yummy, and the lentil soup is delicious. Glad to have these guys so close by and would recommend without hesitation.

Christina D.

Yelp
Truly delicious Persian food. Appetizers (hummus and mast mousir) were flavorful and pita was fresh. Chicken kabob had a bright lemony flavor with good seasoning, kubideh was excellent; salad was fresh and tasty. Honestly, some of the best Persian food I've had.

Bonnie K.

Yelp
I recently ordered takeout from Mediterranean Grill thru GrubHub. The restaurant is about 5 minutes away and the order arrived on time. I got the Kashk-o-Bademjan and the Mediterranean Mixed Grill. Both were tasty but I have to say was only lukewarm. I'm a bit spoiled by living in the Washington DC metro area with great Lebanese, Persian and Middle Eastern food. Anyhow both dishes were tasty and I would order again. I wished the Mixed Grill came with the grilled onions that I've seen in other Yelp photos. For those of you concerned about take-out packaging, the food arrived in plastic #5 ecopax containers, that are PBA/PFAS free.

Yelp
Mediterranean Grill is my favorite Persian/Iranian restaurant in Cambridge MA. This is probably the best Persian food I've ever had. The quality of their food is the best and the portions are very good. For the appetizer, let's start with Tadig with Gheimeh (hard rice with the stew on top) then add the Mast Moosir (yogurt mixed with shallots) and salad Shirazi to have an unforgettable experience of your life! Their signature dish, in my opinion, is Soltani, a Barg kabob ("fillet" unlike others) that melts in your mouth with a skewer of Koobideh (their beef kabob) that is unbelievable. If you are looking for delicious and authentic Persian food don't waste time and money just go there. I promise you won't regret it.
google avatar

Christina Y.

Yelp
Grew up in Los Angeles eating Persian food at least 3 times a month, and this place exceeds expectations with their generous portions. Beef koobideh is my all-time favorite: flavorful spiced ground beef. It is so good with the saffron rice. I really wish the Beef Shish Kabob on their takeout menu had a koobideh option instead of barg. I know barg is a more expensive cut of meat, but I just like the tenderness and flavor of koobideh (or it reminds me of all those nights eating at Darya and Javan as a kid). I end up getting a veggie skewer on the side so that I don't feel like I'm eating just rice and meat. FYI, it's not clear on the menu, but unless you order a plate that calls out multiple skewers, you will get two skewers of the same type.

Yelp
We've been big fans of Hossein's cooking for years. Mediterranean Grill is a gem of Persian food in the Boston/Cambridge area. They have the best Persian food and the best service in this area. I highly recommend the following: Appetizers: mast-o-moosier, homemade hummus, tadiq, kashk-o-bademjaan, their homemade bread is to die for. Entrees: kabab-eh joojeh, joojeh kubideh kabab, kabab - eh kubideh, kabab-eh chenjeh, chicken or beef soltani, baghali polo, zereshk polo, chicken wrap and a very delicious homemade falafel wrap with hot sauce (which may or may not be my favorite). You have to try their homemade doogh (yogurt and mint drink). Excellent food at very affordable prices! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
We've been here for dinner a few times now, and as an Iranian-American I can say they have the best kabobs compared to any other restaurant in MA/RI area. I wasn't a fan of their rice, it needs more salt and butter, but overall the food is delicious. My favorite is their barg. I always get an extra skewer of barg with whatever else I order. Their prices are reasonable compared to other Persian restaurants in the area. I will say the mirzaghasemi could use a little less tomato paste, but that's a personal preference. Their dough is really thick and tasty too. Overall, definitely recommend! Loss of one star was for the rice and mirzaghasemi which are both a personal preference for me, and I have very high standards for Persian food definitely visit them and order some tasty kabobs

Yelp
This is for delivery: don't ask, just order. Delicious, fresh, healthy (yup, possible). Just do it!

Yelp
Amazing food. Great service. Falafel platter is delicious. Crunchy, spiced perfectly. New location but save great taste.

Denny R.

Yelp
Small family owned business. The staff is always kind. They serve great affordable sandwiches and traditional Iranian food. Would definitely recommend!

Lin H.

Yelp
I don't understand why there are so many good reviews. I came in yesterday and ordered no 51 on the menu- beef sirloin chunks with eggplant in a soupy sauce. I was served an incredible amount of rice- more than 3 people's servings with not a lot of sauce to go with. Meat dish was not very hot. Rice was bland and too soft. Overall don't recommend and place was completely empty when I went on a Saturday evening.
google avatar

Oliger A.

Yelp
I really enjoyed their food. The chicken and beef were cooked well, not dry. The food was not salty and had good flavor. We ordered twice. However, the second time we did not get our food. Im blaming the grub-hub delivery person and not the restorant.
google avatar

Megan P.

Yelp
So glad we finally tried this place! Really appreciate a restaurant where we don't both have to get the same vegetarian entree, Mediterranean Grill has a great selection and I'm looking forward to getting them again and trying more of the menu. We think they've become our new go to Mediterranean place. Did delivery through Grubhub and it was timely and easy. We've walked past before and I'd assumed it was more of a lunch place, definitely glad we didn't overlook them for dinner. Falafel wrap was really tasty, French fries & spinach pie sides were solid. Standouts in my opinion were the Loobia rice and Ash E Reshteh. I've not had a lot of Persian or Iranian food before, really enjoyed both of these and definitely excited to try more.

Yelp
Very impressed with MG for many reasons. Healthy food is usually not part of our gastronomic milieu but my One and I decided to make an exception this time. We happened upon this spot after cruising in my whip searching for a healthy place to munch out. The staff was wicked attentive and cheerful and asked us where we'd like to sit. We opted for the Buckminster Fuller-type geodesic bubble tent as we both ain't never been in no bubble and thought it would be a good experience. It was actually quite nice. Spacious as we were the only ones and it was a nice sound barrier from the ever bustling Massachusetts Ave while providing a 360 view. To quote Seinfeld, "...you're outside but you're inside and you're inside but you're outside..." We ordered a Med Salad with a Barg Kabob and the Med Plate with falafel and spinach pie and hum with rice and Veggies and a Beef Kabob. It took a while for the food to appear but everything was cooked to order sans the pie and rice and everything was served fresh. Very healthy and a good portion of food and we crushed most everything, as usual. You can really tell when care is taken into your order as opposed to a place that just "serves food" simply to make a buck. I highly recommend this place as it is well above average and the staff seems to take pride in their establishment as I noticed them carefully packing the take-away orders and double-checking stuff and taking their time to ensure quality. Very impressed...

Sepideh K.

Yelp
Amazing, delicious, high quality food. It reminds me of Tehran ... The platters come with big grilled tomatoes... good rice and mouthwatering kabobs. Kabobs are tender and juicy. Beef KoobidehBeef Barg Kabob
google avatar

Abeer R.

Yelp
Mixed feelings. The quality is great, but unfortunately the price went way up and the quantity half what we usually order. Instead if 2 portions of the meat it's one now and less rice. Wh i h does not make sense esp if you don't tell the customers about the drastic change. Unfortunately, it's not worth ordering from there again.
google avatar

Christin R.

Yelp
I've ordered from this place twice now and it's fantastic! They have so much on the menu. The kabobs are well seasoned. So far we've tried 3 of the different sauces/dips and they've all been great. I'm definitely going to put this restaurant in our regular rotation.

Ryan P.

Yelp
i don't know how you can order a $75 meal with a platter and some additional appetizers including hummos ... and receive NO pita. And the menu on grubhub doesnt let you order pita or add notes. This is a ripoff!!
google avatar

Anarie S.

Yelp
Very cute and small place that's near the Somerville bike path. The staff were really friendly and the food was great!
google avatar

Yelp
great food with lots of protein! the staff was realy nice and friendly . will definitely go again

Yelp
Easily the best restaurant in Boston area. Clean and delicious food. Service is spectacular. Please don't go though, I like the place to myself!

Carrissa L.

Yelp
The employees/owner? are so so nice both over the phone and in person. They are patient and flexible and immediately brought water to my dog and brought my takeout outside after ordering! The wraps were delicious and tasted so fresh. We had the falafel and chicken kabob. We will definitely go back to try more as well as sit outside.

Sara D.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was phenomenal. Delicious barg and koobideh kababs, zereshk polo with chicken (grilled), and shirazi salad. I'm really happy I stumbled upon this place today, and will definitely be going back.

Jimmy B.

Yelp
(3.5 stars) I just find the food here wildly inconsistent, ranging from "best lentil soup I've ever had" to "canned lentils with some salt thrown in." Same with almost everything--goes up and down. (A window into why that may be came from one visit when I asked about oil used in hummus and waiter said "normally olive oil, but today canola oil.")
google avatar

Vickie L.

Yelp
This is the second time we ordered takeout from this place since its grand opening during COVID. The staff is very nice and got some really good food! *Recommend: 40 - Baghali Rice w/ Lamb Shank: the lamb shank is REALLY juicy and flavorful, a must-try here in my opinion! However the portion is not quite balanced, way too much rice for the regular sized meat. 1 - Homemade Hunnus: good, not great *Not-so-happy with: 2 - Kashk-O-Badenjaan: a sophisticated eggplant hummus dish. Kinda too sour and minty. Not to my best taste. Pita: kinda hard, cold and dry. I will skip the wrap next time because of this. Plates are the way to go.

SKhan K.

Yelp
Best Persian food in Massachusetts. Reasonable prices compared to Molana and the meats are cooked better. Molana smear is burnt.

Sarah O.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! The food is so good!! I always get the chicken kebab wrap and baklava. The staff is so kind, I love the lady that works the front desk she's so sweet and always super friendly. highly recommend eating here definitely get the baklava it's unreal!!
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
I highly recommend the chef's specials section of the menu, which include Persian favorites such as Addis Polo with chicken and Zereshk rice and chicken. Delicious and huge portions. This is half of my order today. I will get a second meal from it.

Liz K.

Yelp
This is my favorite spot in all of Cambridge! The food is always so tasty, service is quick and helpful, this restaurant never disappoints! Don't walk, run to try this spot!

Yelp
I ordered on their website for delivery. Time was mid morning. Their delivery time options started at 11 am. I chose 11:45. I got a call at 11:30 informing me they had just opened and that they could not get my food until 12:30. (Their website should not have the option for delivery before 12:30 if it's not possible... just sayin') Since I was ordering for my team at work, I told her that 12:30 was unacceptable, and that 12:15 was better. She agreed. In the interim, I received an email at 12:15 that one item was unavailable and that they were taking it off the order. Okay. It was tabbouleh, and they shouldn't have been out of such a simple Mediterranean staple but okay. Then I got a call at 12:15 telling me that their driver had blew their tires out (All of them?) and they would not be able to deliver until 1 pm. WHAT? 45 more minutes?!?!? They are 3.5 miles away from here. I told her that our food would be cold, and that my team's lunch would be over. She replied with "It's not our fault!". I don't care who's fault it is, but it didn't seem like they were trying to get our food to us in any hurry, and I told her so. She reiterated her assertion that they were not at fault. Again. I still don't care. She said, "We will keep your food warm". AKA Dried out. She said that would not happen. I am dubious. I told her that at 187 dollars (!!!!!) for the order, it BETTER be Phenomenal! She didn't even offer to reduce the price. Anyway, I finally agreed to keep the delivery at the new 1:00 time, which is one hour and 15 minutes longer than I planned. Eventually, the food did arrive at 12:50, 10 minutes "Early". They included an extra baklava (The best baklava I've ever had!) and a cuke and tomato salad. The shrimp was great, the chicken was not dried out and very flavorful, and the beef and lamb were moist and flavorful as well. Both were a little more done than I would have liked, though. ALL sauces and dips were amazing, and they served a lot of bread to accompany. We had Ghormeh Sabzi, Hummus, Baba-ganoush, Mast-O-Khiar and others. All in all, I'm giving 4 out of five stars for the food. It should have been 5 of 5 if it had arrived hot and fresh, and I'm sure it normally is. If this review was for service only, I'd give a 3 of 5. To be fair, they only recently opened and are ironing out some kinks. Also to be fair, they communicated very quickly about every delay. I'd say they came through in the end, and I will definitely try them again!

Navid R.

Yelp
The food was excellent! One of the best Persian foods in this area hands down. The beef koobideh, Mediterranean salad, basmati rice, and the sauces were amazing. Don't forget to the get the baklava, it's the perfect bite size and not too flaky so it doesn't fall apart. Y'all will see me more often! Wowoow

Andres R.

Yelp
Tiny and ugly place, bad food, good service. cleanliness not the best. probably the worst mediterranean food I have ever had. whats wrong with the review rating this as the top 10 for this top of food in Boston - FAR FROM IT!

Clyde L.

Yelp
I love this place. We have gotten mostly takeout but everything we have gotten is good. The chicken wraps, kebobs and plates are excellent and super tender. I like there falafel wraps, plates and salad. Going healthy try the falafel salad which is the best I have had. I get a couple extra falafels with it. They also have a very dense salad made of mostly cucumber and tomato called a Shirazi salad which is out of this world. While waiting for my order I saw there baklava and ordered some. Yummmmm.

Ari M.

Yelp
Delicious! Ordered the beef Barg, beef koobideh, and chicken kebab. All excellent! Get the dill rice with it!
