Mediterraneo, the Houston Restaurant That Astronauts—and My Grandparents—Hit Up for Lunch | Bon Appétit

"A cozy, welcoming Greek and Middle Eastern market-restaurant popular with astronauts and NASA employees thanks to its proximity to the space center; it serves affordable, comforting meals that make dining out possible for budget-conscious families. The owners, Magdy and Sonia Kotb, who emigrated from Egypt and opened the place in 1999, are active community supporters—catering events, sponsoring arts festivals, and feeding hospital workers after Hurricane Harvey—and the restaurant often hosts live music and belly dancers on weekends. Decor is playful and travel-themed, with MapQuest-era tabletops, habanero-red and Castelvetrano-green walls plastered with Grecian coastal photos, NASA swag and astronaut portraits (including a class photo near the checkout), and rocket-launch memorabilia. Signature dishes and favorites include flaky baklava (displayed in silver aluminum trays), moussaka, must-order spanakopita, lentil soup, minestrone, tomato basil, grilled kebabs, and a generous mezze platter featuring dolmas, hummus, cabbage rolls and baba ghanoush; Grandma Rose also recommends a sweet Mavrodaphne if you drink. A mini-market inside sells imported staples like grape leaves, tahini, and large cans of olive oil, and the takeout baklava is not to be missed; the business has since added a second location and a supersize flatscreen for watching soccer." - ByAlex Beggs

Celebrate the space race at these 4 spots in Houston - SilverKris

"A popular café and market that has served astronauts since 1999, known for its Mediterranean specialties—hummus, baba ghanoush, moussaka and more—and a sense of history (patrons note an astronaut has likely dined in the same seat)." - Mai Pham

Had Lunch there today (10/1/25). The lamb kebab was tender & delicious. Their pilaf was the best I’ve had anywhere. The tziki was light & fresh. The other person in the party had the Italian sub. This had plenty of meat and the roll was fresh and tasty. The have several imported beers that you don’t normally see in restaurants. I drank an Almaza from Lebanon, which I’d order again. We were told that they have belly dancing on weekends but I don’t know what times. I’d definitely eat here again. The menu choices all look good. Lunch prices are typically $10-20. The menu on this site is accurate regarding food choices but the prices are higher.

Google
The food was so fresh and full of flavor. Spanokopita was flaky, moist, and so savory. Egyptian salad made me feel like I could eat it everyday through a Texas summer. Fresh ingredients and seasonings that elevated the entire dish. The falafel was a little, service was good, and the atmosphere welcoming. Patio seating is very pleasant as long as the weather is on your side.

Google
Went with friends for a birthday party and we loved this place. Live entertainment was awesome. The service was really good and the food was amazing. We’re definitely coming back to try other dishes from the menu.

Google
Very delectable, nice portion sizes. The inside is a bit on the small size, but the seating feels spatious enough. Interior has on-point decoration for the cuisine type. Staff is friendly. I recommend the tomato soup and also the humus. This place exceeded my expectations.

Google
Visited this wonderful place and enjoyed myself immensely. Service was great. Eulia (probably spelling it wrong) was super sweet and helpful. The food was awesome! We tried Dolmas (excellent with the Tzatziki), Stuffed Cabbage (very tasty!) and Pita slices with Hummus (best hummus I have ever tasted). I ordered the Falafel Plate with Roasted Potatoes. The falafel was good but the potatoes were the best. For dessert, I ordered the Mediterraneo Rice Pudding. It was excellent. Not too sweet and very creamy. I also tried the Baklava. It was perfect! The only thing that I would have preferred is the music to not be as loud. I couldn't hear my friends very well and felt like I was talking very loudly. The belly dancer was cool too 😀

Lisa S.

Google
Always great food and good service. Can get a bit overcrowded at times but if it's a nice day you can sit outside. Everything here is good but, my favorite is the gyro plate with the greek salad on the side. My husband loves their baklava. Sometimes I come here for a quick Hummus and bread snack with a friend.

John W.

Google
My wife and I had lunch here today and I really enjoyed the food. We like to order different dishes and share and have some to take home. I really liked the mousakka and green beans. We will definitely be going back.

Google
First visit. Fabulous, Quaint little restaurant with great service and fantastic food! Atmosphere was great and friendly. Most certainly will return. Second visit delighted to find live music! Later fun with a visit from a belly dancer! A little loud for us old folks, but a lot of fun. Shrimp Pasta, Grilled Chicken Spicy Vodka Pasta, and Tuna Salad! Listening to Mickey Hobbs

Yelp
This is my go to for Mediterranean food in the Clear Lake area. Huge menu, friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere. In warmer weather the outdoor seating is nice. I ordered the vegetarian sampler and it was enough for two plus leftovers.

Yelp
Food was so fresh and tasty! Best hummus I've had since in a long time. Portions were a good size. Loved eating on the patio. My reservation would not be on the food but on the service. I believe they were short handed and that's why it look awhile to take our order and serve us. First time I've been there so didn't know that I had to go inside to pay. So we waited until we could flag someone down to ask how to pay our bill. Unfortunately, they only have one cash machine as I had to wait another 10(?) minutes to pay my bill as the party in front of me seemed to be paying several checks at once. I would definitely go back but would be more mentally prepared to wait in line to pay the bill.

Yelp
First visit and very enjoyable! Quaint spot with varied seating. Service is prompt and friendly. We had several lunch plates we shared, all were tasty. While not as flavorful as say Athena's, the food is good. Tsatziki is some of the best ever, fries are fabulous, green beans delish. They also have a small market where they sell canned, jarred and some refrigerated items. We will be back!
google avatar

Jacilyn M.

Yelp
This is my go-to lunch place during the work day. Great atmosphere and convenient location. I love their pita bread and feta cheese, chicken kabobs and their rice is wonderful (wish I had the recipe!). Fast service.
google avatar

Emiyah F.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to go when I'm visiting home. My favorite dish is the chicken kebab and the walnut baklava. If you're looking for a place to try this is it !! They always have music playing if not a live performance. And the service is great, they're always so sweet and attentive

Yelp
If you need a bite to eat before blast off, Méditerraneo is a worthy choice. The area around Johnson Space Center has a comprehensive collection of grub spots, many chain restaurants. Mediterraneo is nice because it's independent and seems to be authentic in its Greek fare. I opted for the dish with falafel, grape leaves and hummus. It was satisfying without being overwhelming. The falafel was nicely done; the stuffed grape leaves were great as was the hummus. My sis had her usual - a vegan wrap, which must be good because it's her consist order. While the cafe, was busy with the lunch crowed, we were seated quickly and were able to order soon after arrival. Mediterraneo isn't a fancy or a new spot; it's cozy, quick and worthwhile, especially if you're in the mood for something besides greasy foods. Enjoy!

Nancy T.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Staff was friendly and efficient. Enjoyed sitting outside on the patio. Celebrating a birthday with friends. Lots of parking.
google avatar

Gloria T.

Yelp
The rice served with the meat plate is so good. The rest of the food is as expected - good but nothing outstanding. Portions on the small side. The plates in the photos aren't that big with wide rims. Indoor and outdoor seating. There is a small market in the corner of the restaurant. Great service.
google avatar

Tiffanie P.

Yelp
Love this place! The grape leaves are the best around, getting them is a must! My favorite entree is the Greek salad with chicken. The food tastes like it's been prepared by a Mediterranean family who invited me to dinner.
google avatar

Stacey P.

Yelp
Greek food was delicious. Service not so much. They did have a help wanted sign on the door so not trying to be overly critical. Asked for several items like a glass of ice ice and salt & pepper that never came to the table. A lot of confusion with ringing up bill and food from little store. Would probably do take out next time. Hummus was great. Pastitsio was a to amazing. No glasses of Greek wine? So must buy $35 bottle - no thanks.

Yelp
The service has really gone downhill in the last year or so. When you stop in to pick up an order, no one will make eye contact nor acknowledge your presence. If you assert yourself and try to get someone's attention, they become quite rude. It's a catch 22. We've stopped in a few time and I guess because we are not "regulars", we've been virtually ignored. The food is good though. But I found that we can get the same food elsewhere with much better service. I also used to stop in and pick up feta and olives from the counter (when I could get someone to wait on me) but recently found that Phoenicia has the same items so I go there instead. Just as an aside, they had much better service in years past. Not sure what changed.

Yelp
Stopped in while in town and the whole experience was amazing from start to finish. The ambiance was amazing and the live entertainment was fabulous.... we were there on a Friday night and they had live music and belly dancing. The food was fabulous. We had the frenze plate that had five different appetizers and none of us could decide which was our favorite. All of the food was amazing and the tiramisu was the best I have ever had. Ever. So delicious. The service was fantastic as well. From the waitstaff to the owner personally greeting us, it was seriously top notch. All around a five star experience. We LOVED it.

Joyce M.

Yelp
Muffuletta was more like a bad small ham & cheese. Nothing on it! No lettuce, onion, ...nothing like a New Orleans Muffuletta; please learn how to make one!! Same with tuna sandwich: came w NO chips, NOTHING, and no flavor on a huge hoagie/subway bun. They are really trying to save money, I guess by not putting a chip or two with a sandwich. No pride is how the food is plated. Salad was good.
google avatar

Yelp
We have just discovered that we really like Mediterranean food. Sad, right? But we're making up for lost time as we've eaten here twice within the past three days! Ive ordered the chicken kabob with roasted potatoes and husband had the gyro plate with Greek salad. Both times. It has a nice patio with umbrellas and plants. It was quite crowded both inside and out around 1 on Saturday but mostly empty yesterday. Lunch prices extend until 4pm. We are impressed that they were chosen to cater for Cher, Paul McCartney and others. Anything good enough for them is definitely good enough for me. Try it!
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
If I could give a negative star I would. Website hours say they open at 10am. I get here after 10, only cleaning people are here. They can't work the register. They say it opens at 10:30. I wait, come back inside after 10:30. Still no one to check me out. I'm stuck here waiting for someone to check me out. Now one of the employees say someone will be here in 5 mins. This is not how you run a business. If I can get this yogurt somewhere else, I'll be happy to take my business there!
google avatar

Dina S.

Yelp
So went in there to get a coffee to go. Ended up ordering a gyro as well. Both the server was so irritated and pissed at us. The gyro wasn't great. We also asked for Toum, Mediterranean garlic sauce and they didn't even know what that was. One of the worst place for Mediterranean food and terrible service. I will never go back and would never recommend this place to anyone. We still tipped for out to go order just to let them know that even though they treated us poorly, we wouldn't go down to their level.

T M.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for years. A NASA staple and sometimes you catch an astronaut dining here. Always consistent with fresh options, good service, and quality portions. Ive tried other local Mediterranean places as there are so many these days including g fusions and always happy to come back to Mediterraneo.

Yelp
Great food! Super sweet staff. Loved the ambiance! Kids loved it too! Great place to relax!

Yelp
Food was amazing!! I will definitely be returning. It was not overpriced and the quality was wonderful.

Yelp
We've been coming to this restaurant for many years. Originally it was in the shopping center on Upper Bay Road, that has been razed. We only come about twice a year because I'm not a fan of Mediterranean food. But, she likes it so we come occasionally. The owner died and his wife now runs the place. In my opinion the new digs are better than the old -- not as nostalgic but more comfortable. The food is the same so I wish I could have found my old review to copy. We get the appetizers. Falafel, Kibbi Balls, Hummus, Spanakopita & Mixed Olives. Both our favorite is the Hummus, next is Spanakopita & Olives. After that she favors Falafel and I favor the Kibbi Balls. The servers at the old place were not to my liking but here they were nice and efficient. __ We've eaten out every meal for 35 years

Elaine B.

Yelp
Excellent service, food and atmosphere . The Greek pasta (seafood), gyro plate with Greek salad, and even the tuna fish sandwich-all Great!!'

Jordan F.

Yelp
Fantastic food. Authentic restaurant. Definitely good for a casual, quiet meal. Good service
google avatar

Heather K.

Yelp
Food was good and the staff were wonderful with my 10 month son as he threw his bottle and food containers on the floor expecting me to fetch them.
google avatar

Nick R.

Yelp
Horrible service. The owner Sonya is very rude and doesn't care for anyone around her not sure how this place stays busy. The order tells me to come in and get my food at a certain time and Sonya sits there and argues with you saying it say to wait 1 minute... then takes an extra 20 minutes just to be EXTRA RUDE! Food isn't that great! The price is cheap but food isn't good to come again. The owner treats colors like crap! As you can seen been 15days on here and not one time did Magdy say anything nor Sonya. This place is a joke! As well as the owners. Dimassis Buffett in Webster is way better food!! And decent price. I know majority of people go to this place just to see the belly dancer but if you want to go to home cooking Dimassi's is the place!

Yelp
1. Food: a) the meat was tasty but a little tough. b) Acc. to the waitress, they didn't have Spinach (on a workday at lunchtime?) c) They didn't have mint tea (in a Mediterranean restaurant?) d) My friend's soup was tasting funny (she is not a fussy person, so something was definitely off) 2. Service: what can I say, a little forethought could have saved them many trips. They are friendly but could benefit from some more training!! a) She didn't think of asking or automatically bring a spoon for the tea. b) We had to ask for salt/pepper, as it wasn't on the table. c) My friend asked for Styrofoam containers. She had to ask again for a bag to carry her food containers. d) My friend did not once get an offer to refresh her ice tea. 3. Ambiance: a) the music was too loud. Couldn't understand my own words. (in their defense, they turned it down when we asked) b) It's after Epiphany Day. The Christmas decoration could've be taken down by now. All in all a below par experience.
google avatar

Katherine L.

Yelp
Absolutely love the food here. The falafel pita is one of my favorites, and makes an excellent togo order (especially off the lunch menu , which has great prices). Everything here is very authentic, and the small market inside has many products I've only been able to find overseas. The Baklava is also delicious.
google avatar

Rusty V.

Yelp
This little restaurant was cute on the outside and on the inside. And saw it had great reviews. The waitress was very nice we put order in we got it all pretty fast. The pita was Good, the hummus had an odd flavor I've never had in it before. I was not a fan of it. The tomato Basil soup soup tasted lile it came out of a Campbell Soup can and added basil. The lamb was over cooked and had no flavor besides the bell pepper and the Rice pilaf tasted like place white rice. The food was all ok But not great

James A.

Yelp
Mediterraneo is the corner stone of the Nassau Bay Community. It's choice of international products in their market is great and fits the communities well. Our go to for farmers cheese. The cafe serves fantastic fresh cuisine at a reasonable price. Consistency is king at Mediterraneo from the first time we visited to today the quality has never waived. Their selection of international beers is second to none. The service is great and consistent no matter if it's a busy lunch or a packed Friday or Saturday night. The entertainment is great whether it's one of the many singers who play there, to the amazing Belly Dancers. Additionally beyond seving fantastic food and fun the owners have been supporter to the community since opening. From supporting local youth sports, educational programs to feeding the community after multiple hurricanes throughout the years. Mediterraneo is a true gem not only to Nassau Bay but to the whole Bay Area.

Angie C.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant! Fun times are had on Friday and Saturday nights when there is live entertainment and two performances by a belly dancer. The restaurant is family orientated, where children and adults enjoy dancing with the belly dancer as well as to the music. The menu offers fabulous food from all around the mediteranian. It is so good, it is hard to pick a favorite. Desserts are to die for! My favorite is the tiramisu. The owner, Sonia, is very personable and will assure that you will enjoy your experience. The atmosphere is fantastic whether you dine inside or out on the patio. This is the place to be if you want amazing food and fun!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
The service was excellent, very attentive even with another parte of 17 being served salad when I walked in. I ordered a great salad with chicken and the niece's platter, with delicious lentil soup and a small bowl of crunchy tasty pita chips. The mains were all excellent. Tasty perfectly cooked great filo dough! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Been a customer since before they moved to the new area. This review is long over due. Love the food. Have never had something I didnt like. I live the market style atmosphere where I can buy mediterranean staples. It has a nice outside covered patio with plants and flowers and little trees, there is alsi inside seating. Highly recommend the Tiramisu with a cup of coffee. Servers are very friendly but a little slow to bring the ticket and sometimes to refill drinks. This has been my experience in the evenings. Still highly recommend.

NM L.

Yelp
Authentic Greek menu served by a wait staff who serves exactly as requested. Go for a quiet evening on the patio or create a party! Awesome food, live music with favorite local musicians, coupled with belly dancing make for an evening to keep you going back!

Philip J.

Yelp
Another fantastic dinner and fun night all the way around. Food was great, live music to dance to, and even with a large birthday party going on, service was spot on! All around good evening

T. H.

Yelp
Service is slow and generally unfriendly. I've been 2x and thought my experience the first time was a one off. Ate in the first time and got it to go the second. Bread was soggy in my to go sandwich. Probably won't give an opportunity for a 3rd strike.
google avatar

Hatem S.

Yelp
That kind of place that feels like home. Amazing and delicious homemade style food. Great quality and great service. Reasonable prices. Good selection of wine. Friendly staff. Cozy and feels like home. I love their entertainment too.

Yelp
Love, love, love this place! I have had just about everything the menu has to offer and all of it is delicious. The moussaka is my absolute fave!

Yelp
Great place to eat and to be entertained! Who will I love to come here! Believe me and my friends who been coming here for years.

Yelp
I give it 2stars the food was OK ....They should know people travel around the world... quite familiar how this food should be present it..... The food was delicious and the service was not -oh -so- good...Sitting outside with an empty glass for more than 15 minutes.....service you tell me... just saying signing off -Raven

Yelp
The new Mediterraneo looks fab - as if they picked up the old and dropped it in the new spot. Feels like home.

Allison D.

Yelp
I've been coming to Mediterraneo since I was little and honestly, other Mediterranean/Greek food has come close but never beats their food. If you're looking for something different that not all Greek restaurants have, the stuffed vegetable trio is my all time favorite. It is absolutely exceptional. I love the dolmas, humus, spanakopita, tabouleh, and Greek salad. But I have to say my first runner up favorite is the tomato basil soup. It is just so so so good and I can never get any tomato basil soup that I make to taste anywhere close to theirs. Someone said several reviews below that the tomato basil soup tastes like it came straight from a can, and while this is definitely not true, I wish it was!! It is so yummy I crave it all the time!!
google avatar

Nataliya M.

Yelp
This is my favorite local joint. I fell in love with it's charm by coming here for lunch with the co workers. Then I came here for dinner and enjoyed the live music. They have a nice deli selection of hard to find cheeses and cultural food. Fresh dessert like baklava also. The place itself is really old and run down looking, but it's family owned and a lot of celebrities ate here like Jessica Simpson, Coldplay, Avril Lavinge, N'SYNC, and tons more I can't remember, lol. They have pics posted inside of all their A-listers. Food: I love the Greek Mousaka (pictured) which is layers of eggplant w/ beef, potato and Bechamel sauce. it's very soft and smooth- just melts away in your mouth, yummy. Also, the gyros are a hit. Tip: every table has a number at it, when your ready you just go pay at the counter by telling them your number.

Yelp
This a a ridiculously delicious Greek restaurant in Nassau Bay right by NASA! We've been coming here since we moved here in 2013 and I cannot believe I have not left a review! All of the food is authentically Greek. We've had many dishes here: lamb gyros, chicken, beef kabobs and more. Today, I spied the stuffed cabbage rolls in the appetizer section! I love cabbage rolls and cannot believe I have not seen them before on the menu! They are delicious! They are a right combination of ground beef, rice and spices with a rich, tomato sauce! The order comes with 4 rolls. No pita bread is served, but you can get some for $1 extra. Besides the entrees, the sides are very yummy! They offer rice, roasted potatoes, spinach, fries and Greek salad. The atmosphere is very pleasant and there is even. Greek store where you can buy goods. The small deli has dolmas, olives and other food to take home. We finished our meal a piece of authentic baklava which was delicious!!! We have also been here when they have live music! It's such a treat to eat here and the wait staff are friendly and make sure you feel as though you are in Greece! Enjoy!!
google avatar

Moriah H.

Yelp
Best Greek food in houston. This comes the closest tasting to the Greek food I had in Greece and remains one of only a few restaurants to sell pastitiso (spelling?) in the city. Small, respected family run establishment that also sells a small amount of groceries. Don't be fooled. This is definitely a restaurant. A local gem!!!

Yelp
A friend and I dropped by for lunch today, and the place looks really cute with the decor both from the outside and when we stepped in. Service is slightly slow, but the waitresses were courteous. We both ordered lunch specials-- For me, a gyros pita wrap ($4.99), and for my friend, the soulvaki pita wrap ($5.99). They came out wrapped in aluminum foil, tightly rolled into, quite literally, a wrap :P I'm used to the soft, fluffy pita breads folded in the middle, cradling the gyros meat and yummy vegetables, so the thinner, not-so-chewy pita was a surprise and slight disappointment to me. The gyros meat was good, but not super amazing ^^" My friend thought both of our lunches were kind of small, but U think they were enough to satisfy for the price~ Instead of paying at your table, pay at the cash register near the back. The restaurant was half full with patrons during lunch hours. There's a selection of Greek cooking spices, foodstuffs, and European candies that was fun to browse through near the back of the restaurant, and there is a pastry section with baklava and deli counter too :D I probably won't return for the gyros, but the menu offers a lot of other options I might try in the future! *Update*: If you buy things from their market, you should probably check the expiration date. I just realized the Toblerone chocolate bar I bought was 1 year past its due date (still tasted good though :P), eek!

Yelp
I'm deducting one star because the red-haired lady who checked us out was exceptionally rude. My sister's card was declined because of THEIR machine (not due to lack of funds) and she practically yelled across the busy dining area "DECLINED, DECLINED ma'am" multiple times. Almost like she was intentionally trying to humiliate her. It put a bad taste in my mouth and I don't know if I'd want to dine in again if she was working. Our waitresses (both of them) were so kind and sweet and maybe they should check people out because their customer service skills were wonderful. They made us feel so welcome. We decided on three appetizers - the olives, the spanakopita and the hummus with pita bread. The hummus was really delicious and the warm pita paired with it was a great accompaniment. The olives were SO salty that we could hardly eat them but the spanakopita MORE than made up for them! Better than Sokol's and Al Basha by far! Flaky, crispy, warm and the filling was to die for. I decided on the Greek lasagna which was fantastic. Probably better than lasagna I've had at authentic Italian places. I even liked the addition of the carrots which was odd to me at first. My friends enjoyed their souvlaki plates and even commented on how juicy and savory the steak was. I will definitely be back, just will hope for a kinder and less loud/rude lady to cash us out!

Courtnii S.

Yelp
The food is 5 stars, the waitresses are literally amazing ! The atmosphere is historic and interesting. I love this place so much. The best Greek food ever ! Anyone who doesn't like this place is crazy

Erin M.

Yelp
Great restaurant! Delicious food and lovely atmosphere!! Beautiful outdoor dining as well!!

Yelp
I've been eating here for about 20 years from a small child until now it is still my favorite Mediterranean restaurant! My favorite entree's are the stuffed cabbage and the vegetarian plate. Some of the best hummus and tabouli I've had! Highly recommend if you are around the nasa/league city area!

Yelp
We were seated outside and after waiting 20 minutes for someone to come take our order we decided to leave...can't even call it horrible service because there was no service at all. After reading some reviews it looks like we weren't the only ones treated this way. How does this place even stay in business?
