I went here with a friend shortly after COVID restrictions were lifted, and people were eager to return to business as usual at restaurants and social outings. Previously, we had eaten outside here during the pandemic and the staff had been very grateful to have customers. I believe there was a female owner or manager and she was very involved in making sure we were happy with the food and service during our initial visit, when it was rare for people to risk visiting a restaurant.
After most COVID restrictions were lifted and people returned to restaurants, we went back to Medium Rare and ordered the bottomless mimosas with our brunch. There was a 2 hour time limit, which I think we were vaguely aware of, but after some slow initial service, we were left in peace to eat and drink. Our waiter kind of disappeared and the restaurant was pretty busy, so this friend and I were just hanging out, having a good time and in no particular rush, since we had been left to our own devices.
All of a sudden, the same woman who had been so accommodating to us on our last visit, came storming up to our table to berate us for not wrapping it up sooner. She launched into a tirade on the two hour time limit, not allowing us a word in edgewise. Not that I would have been able to rebut in that exact moment, after several mimosas and having just been unceremoniously jarred out of a relaxed, chill state. It was total whiplash.
I suspect what happened was that our waiter was overwhelmed with tables and when questioned by his manager (I believe this was the woman who confronted us) threw the blame on us for not bringing our check out sooner when the two hour time limit was up - I personally don’t think that should be the customer’s responsibility to set a timer themselves…but even so, if they were expecting us to do so, they could have at least told us that was their preference and at the VERY least, approached us without raised voices.
Anyway, I just randomly think about this interaction sometimes and get a bit annoyed at the way we were treated here. I wish I had stood up for myself more in the moment. I haven’t been back to Medium Rare since, nor do I ever wish to return.
The food and drinks were good from what I recall, but the service on that second visit left its mark, in a really unfortunate way.
