The Best Restaurants on Portland’s North Mississippi Avenue | Eater Portland

"For what looks like a simple neighborhood Thai restaurant, Mee-Sen is truly punching above its weight class. Its selection of Thai noodle soups is particularly noteworthy, from the tangy and porky mhoo tom yum to the lightly sweet and seafood-packed yen ta fo; every soup comes with a choice of one of five noodle options. Cocktails here are also fun, with drinks like lychitini and tamarind margarita." - Eater Staff

The Best Thai Food in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"A quick stroll down Mississippi will reveal Mee Sen, a casual restaurant with plenty of seasonal patio space out front and a cozy wood-paneled interior. Here, meals start with char-grilled meats on skewers alongside tamarind-laced cocktails, followed by Thai salads like the glass noodle yum woon sen. The best move is to get one of the restaurant’s customizable soup options, which come with a choice of noodle and deeply exuberant and acidic broths."

Google
Really nice spot! I got a fried egg with my dish that actually had some run to it which most places are too cowardly to do. So delicious. The outdoor seating was lovely on such a nice sunny day.

Eating at Mee-Sen Thai was a wonderful experience. The staff was very friendly and attentive and the restaurant was quaint and comfortable. The food was delicious! The Curry Puff was my favorite by far. The Fish Cake were fantastic and the sauce they paired with them was bright and sweet which really balanced the whole dish. The Beef Noodles were awesome. The broth had a deep flavor profile that hits you in the soul (not trying to be dramatic but seriously, it’s phenomenal). The soup was so well balanced and the beef melted in your mouth. The Ba Mhee noodles were also great. The sweet soy sauce with the pork and Dungeness crab was delicious and the noodles were wonderful. I will definitely be trying Mee-Sen Thai again!

I am Thai and I ordered chicken Tom Yum sen lek noodles (dry option) it's pretty good I like it. Soup for side dishes is pretty good too. I recommended.

Google
Cute spot! Didn’t get too many pictures of my food but the Thai tea was great. Portions were a little smaller than I usually get but still good! Sweet Thai paid. Amazing mango sticky rice, but also super tiny.

Google
Had excellent time at Mee Sen and that left me satisfied, One of the standout dishes was the Guay Tiew Tom Kha. The broth was incredibly creamy, yet bright and refreshing with every spoonful. It had the perfect balance of coconut richness and tangy lime, making it both comforting and energizing. The dish was filling and wonderful To go with my meal I ordered a classic Thai Iced Tea, which was sweet, milky, and served ice-cold. I also tried one of their signature cocktails, the Mee Sen Colada, and it was a tropical treat. It blended the creamy notes of a traditional piña colada with a subtle pineapple. From the food to the drinks, everything felt thoughtfully crafted and delicious. I’d highly recommend this place to anyone looking for bold, authentic Thai flavors in a relaxed and friendly setting.

Google
If you are looking for an authentic Thai place, this is it. The restaurant is cute and cozy and the food is soooo delicious. I love the menu comes with pictures and they offer so many dishes. We got Lychitini and Mee Sen Colada and they were both so good but kinda small. For appetizers, we got Chicken Wings with Spicy Basil and Somtum Puu. Chicken Wings sauce is fish sauce with basil. It was not bad but the basil definitely added little kick. The picked jalapeños on the side was a plus for the wings. Somtum Puu was so tasty. I loved it but it was little too fishy for my husband. Then I got braised beef boat noodle soup and my husband got Khao Soi Gai. Mine came with so tender chunks of beef with some tendons, rice noodle, bean sprouts and broccoli maybe. It was full of favor but the broccoli was little too crunchy. Khao Soi Gai was so creamy and the meat was juicy but my husband wished he got it with rice instead. They also offered a tray sauce on the side with pickled jalapeños, chili oil, chili flake and some kind of sauce. The service was excellent and the waitresses were friendly and attentive. The price is pretty reasonable. Overall, this is my first time trying this place and I love it. Definitely recommend!!

Google
Our favorite Thai restaurant in the Humboldt/Boise neighborhood. The staff are so friendly, and the food is ridiculously good. Having eaten our way through the vast bulk of their menu over the last few years I can confidently say that everything they serve is delicious! The dishes are packed with flavor, and everything is always cooked very well. Our favorites are the wrapped prawns, guay tiew tom kha, krapow, hat yai fried chicken, and the Thai curry (get it with the roti!!). They also have a nice selection of cocktails, and the service is top notch! One of our favorite spots on Mississippi, and a fantastic restaurant overall.

Yelp
Consistently impressed by the quality of ingredients here. Every dish is fresh, beautifully prepared, and delicious. One of my favorite restaurants in Portland! Fun interior design. Great service. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I went here with my mom, sisters, and daughter. My mom is Thai and very traditional with her cooking so her choices of places are very minimal unless it's her house or somewhere in Thailand by her family. This restaurant is absolutely delicious. Everything we ate was so good and I wish I had more room to eat more things. It is kind of difficult to find parking, but besides that the restaurant is worth visiting. They have great customer service and are very polite as most Thai people are since we are known for the land of the Smiles. I guarantee you will not be dissatisfied coming here.

Yelp
Very solid place with a great location on Mississippi. Our group shared the chicken satay and the curry puffs for apps. My friends had the khao soi gai and panang moo and I had the pad see ew. All were very tasty. Drinks were pretty good too! Service was quick and efficient even on a busy Friday night. We sat inside but they had a number of outdoor tables as well.
google avatar

Caleb M.

Yelp
The food was very flavorful. Of the items I tried the Panang Moo was my favorite. While the other entrees I tried were good, the Panang Moo just had such rich flavor. The servers were helpful with giving dish recommendations and were quick to meet any of our needs. They even helped us adjust the umbrella to be out of the sun. I sadly didn't go inside at all so didn't get a vibe of the indoor ambiance, but the outdoor area was spacious and was a pretty standard outdoor eating area.
google avatar

Berenice G.

Yelp
The food was delicious and so were the drinks. Was served promptly. There is outside seating as well to enjoy the sun!
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
The restaurant is small but it gives off an authentic feel through the decor and set up. I enjoyed their food, most notable was the pad see ew (10/10) and the Thai Tea was the perfect amount of sweet. The service was great, our server checked in on us throughout. Crab wonton (8/10, a little too creamy for me but the crisp was perfect.), somtum papaya 8.5/10, tomyum soup 7/10, wings 10/10

Yelp
This has to be hands down one of my favorite spots for Thai food in North Portland. I take all of my visiting friends here and get takeout as well. I consistently get the Hat Yai Fried Chicken(comes with sticky rice and chili sauce), and the Thai iced tea(not pictured). The fried chicken, is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, every single bite is so flavorful. The Thai tea is just how I like it, rich and not too sugary. The service is always too notch even when busy, the staff was attentive and very helpful with questions about the menu. They offer outdoor(when the weather is nice) as well as indoor dining, and on a busy day you can be added to the waitlist and roam about Mississippi Ave.
google avatar

Daniel N.

Yelp
Very quick service. I got the fried chicken with sticky rice and it was delicious. I loved eating here. The wait staff was very friendly

Yelp
11/10! This place wins on food, ambiance, service and price! Delicious food, prompt and courteous service and amazing atmosphere, especially the gorgeous outdoor seating. Perfect for the fall weather!
google avatar

Joan R.

Yelp
Food had great flavor: I ordered Yum woon sen and my husband had a chicken Pad kee mao. My dish came only with 2 shrimps , and some glass noodles, but I talked to the staff and they fixed my dish and added a shrimp and some squid. So service was good as well. The ambiance was very interesting with decorations. Will say that I feel the portions are a bit small ...at least for what we ordered.

Yelp
Me and my girlfriend drove from Seattle to watch the warriors game and this is where we ate because supposedly pok pok closed down so we googled a random Thai spot nearby. The owner was rude and kept trying to explain to me what I was ordering like I shouldn't order it. I've been to Thailand over 15 times and know what Khao soi is ma'am. You can find this kind of taste at almost all Thai restaurants. Your typical average Thai restaurant if you're near and super hungry then it can be a quick and easy meal. Other than that, it's nothing special like the pok pok we remembered.#americanizedfood

Yelp
I usually get the pad thai from here (which is an 11/10, the best in portland imo) but instead i got Ba Mee Haeng Puu & Mhoo Dang (egg noodles with pak choi, pork, crab, and crushed peanuts) and it's sweeter than i had anticipated. I wish it had more garlic, peanuts, or something acidic to cut the sweetness of the soy or oyster sauce that was in it. but that could just be my preference! the pork was sooo flavorful and tender though. despite the surprising sweetness, it was still good and i highly recommend this place. service is incredible though and food came out very quickly.

Yelp
This place offers a delightful dining experience with its authentic Thai flavors and cozy ambiance. Their menu features classic dishes like green curry and pad Thai, expertly prepared with fresh ingredients. The friendly staff adds to the inviting atmosphere, making it a must-visit spot for Thai food lovers in the area. I got the curry noodles thing and it was actually rlly good the apps were great and fried rice is amazing

Yelp
This restaurant is super cute, but very small, and quite busy. Be sure you're prepared to wait if it's a busy night. If the weather is good, try to get a seat outside on their patio area. It gets a bit loud with passing traffic, but the ambiance is worth it. As for food, the menu is quite extensive and the portions are large. There were so many things that we wanted to try after looking around and had time choosing exactly what we wanted. Of all the different Thai restaurants, this one is high on my list. The only bummer was that we didn't try any of the drinks, but they looked really good - so that will be happening on the next visit.

Yelp
Walked in for lunch and was seated right away. What a cute and cozy spot on a cold day! Just 8 tables and 3 bar stools inside and some outdoor seating in front. Staff was super nice and food came out piping hot and quick! Loved all the decorative touches with pops of color and fun! Food was yummy and worth every penny. Can't wait to come back next time!
google avatar

Damani P.

Yelp
Small and quaint interior with additional outdoor seating that makes for a nice lunch or dinner spot for smaller parties. No issues with the service, the food was good but nothing to write home about. If in the area and needing to grab a bite, I'd return... but wouldn't be making a special trip out for Thai here.

Yelp
This restaurant was a great experience. It's nestled in a nice little area on Mississippi and has a very nice ambiance. My friends and I ordered the Penang Moo, Pad See Ew with chicken, Khao Soi. The Penang Moo had a nice kick of spice too it and and came with plenty of chicken. The Pad See Ew was very flavorful and good. We also got the Herbal Jelly Thai Tea to drink, and the mango sticky rice. Tasty treats that complimented the meal well. The service was also fantastic. Overall, I enjoyed my visit here.

Yelp
We got to eat outside on a beautiful Monday evening The food was tasty and portions were perfect. The service was lovely and attentive. The pictures on the menu.. LOVE !

Yelp
Nothing to complain about, everything to boast about! We had to segway to find other eats after an establishment was too busy. Everything was good. We had quiet a spread x3 appetizer papaya salad, crab rangoon, shrimp rolls, x2 meal, 1 Singha beer and a mango sticky rice to go. It was good eats. Nothing to be disappointed about. The service was great. They call you once you're up in the waitlist. Will be adding this to the rotation for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
The vibes here are great. The interior looks so beautiful. The service here is also good. The foood was bomb! The pad Thai and pad kee mao was so yummy and the Tom kha was chefs kiss! I also got the herbal jelly Thai tea which was sooo gooood! I'm dreaming of coming back soon.

Yelp
The food was excellent (5-stars), but we had some (minor) issues with the service. I showed up before my friend. Asked for a table for 4 and was immediately seated, but it was downhill from there... I was literally the ONLY person in the restaurant, but sat for 15 minutes and the waitress never brought me a menu, or asked if I wanted to order a drink (or maybe appetizer) while waiting for my friend. Exactly 15 minutes after I had been seated a couple came into the restaurant, the server seated them, then she immediately brought them menus, napkins and utensils. A few minutes later two of my friends arrived and then she finally brought menus and utensils. We were still thre only people in the restaurant except for the one couple and there were two servers, so they weren't busy at all, except for a couple GrubHub orders, so what happened next made no sense... After patiently waiting about 10 minutes, our server finally asked if we were ready to order. We all quickly replied "yes!" My friend ordered first, telling the server "I would like to order an appetizer and entree, but you can bring them out together. My friends don't want appetizers." But instead of taking all our orders, as soon as my friend said her appetizer the server said " ok, let me go put your appetizer order in first, I'll be right back" but she never came back. We're all very hungry, ready to order, and the server just disappeared into the back of the restaurant for at least 10 minutes. Then she re-appears coming to our table with the appetizer. Then, without taking our order, she casually walks away to seat some guests who had just walked in, then she logs into the computer up front and appeared to get some online orders (?), as the other server was literally washing the restaurants exterior windows (can't make this stuff up!!) FINALLY our server came back to take our entree orders. The food was excellent, absolutely delicious, which is why they get 4 stars, even with the lackluster service. The other issue was with the bill. There were three of us and the server didn't ask if we wanted or bill together or separate, she just brought one bill. When we asked if she could please split the bill (one entree, one entree, one entree + appetizer) very straight forward, but she had to ask us 3 times who ordered what * face palm*

Yelp
On a warm day, the atmosphere at Mee Sen is lovely. The wooden interior opens up onto the plaza and a handful of additional tables. The menu is enormous, but several of the dishes repeat themselves so don't let it overwhelm you. We ordered the pad see ew and the pad khana moo krob, which is pork belly and Chinese broccoli. Both were incredible. The pad see ew was lighter than most and was very fresh and complex. The pork belly was super funky in a way that I like, that bit of chewy crackling flavor that tastes a little wrong, like it's too sexy or cannibalistic to be eating in public. The beer selection was not really a selection, but the one IPA they had was solid. We topped things off with the mango sticky rice with condensed sweetened milk, so delicious.
google avatar

Kay L.

Yelp
If you have to ask the people you're eating with if the food tastes like it's gone off then something is indeed wrong. The salad rolls were good, the pumpkin curry was dry and chalky (didn't know it could be that way) and the chicken pad see ew, well it was eeeeewwww. I had to spit out multiple pieces of cartilage chicken bites. This was a very disappointing meal to say the least.

Yelp
I don't usually crave Thai food all too often, because I usually get the same thing, but this spot's menu was so unique that I was excited to try something new! We came on a Monday night, and it was quite busy but we were able to be seated right away. Loved the vibes inside, they had fun decorations and were also playing great music. I ordered the Mhoo Tom Yum with Sen Lek (thin rice noodles) ($14) and my sister got the Kanom Jeem Nam Ya ($15). My dish came with BBQ pork loin, which was so tender and juicy and the flavor of the broth was amazing. My sister had ordered the wrong item, but the staff were super nice and accommodating and remade the correct dish for her which was super nice, considering how busy they were. Her dish was a curry base, so it was definitely super flavorful as well, and the serving size was so big she didn't even finish! Their drink menu had so many drinks that looked so tasty, but unfortunately we had to sleep early, so we were unable to indulge Service was great and overall, really enjoyed my experience here!

this place was such a hidden gem! i will definitely be returning to try more menu items. food- everything was absolutely delicious and i love how they had so many menu options service- staff was friendly and attentive. all our needs were taken care of and the bill was brought fairly quick. ambiance- this place has two floors and it is decorated beautifully. i would definitely recommend coming here on a date or even with a group of friends.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. The food is always amazing, whether dine in or take out. Service is always friendly. Restaurant has a nice vibe, cosy but not too noisy. Definitely a fav.

Yelp
The restaurant and s was perfect, we ate upstairs which was nice, I tried their soups which were amazing!!!! Honestly I think I found a soup we like more than ramen. Must try!

Yelp
cute thai place, got to sit upstairs tucked a bit away from the noise downstairs. cant fully remember the name of my soup but it was a tom yum base and it was perfect. between the broth, the egg, and the meat it chefs kiss. would come back just for this dish

Yelp
Great food and service was excellent. 3 entrees and 1 appetizer to our table in about 10 min on a busy Saturday night. Flavor was great!
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
The food here was pretty good! I really enjoyed all the fried chicken and pad see ew. Food was well cooked and delicious. I was, however disappointed by the curry puffs. The crust was delicious but the insides were ice cold :(
google avatar

Binh T.

Yelp
Food were good but I've had a better experience for Khao soi and boat noodles somewhere else. I would say 4 stars for all the food we ordered. Lychee crush was so good though I do highly recommend that if you're wanting to try a cocktail drink. I was so excited to try the mussels hotpot . It was pretty good and I would also give it a 4 stars. The roti was a little oily with it being fried roti. The pandan dipping sauce was good. I wish they also make it as a regular roti vs fried roti; and that would be perfect. Customer service was great and the food came out fast too. Check it out if you happen to be around the N Mississippi area.

Yelp
I had been craving Thai food for the longest time and tried this spot on a whim. This is definitely my new favorite Thai spot! My friend and I ordered the Somtum Thai (papaya salad) to share, as well as some NA drinks - Mango Nectar and Thai Iced Tea. The papaya salad was so flavorful and had just the right amount of spice. The Thai Iced Tea was creamy and not too sweet. My friend also really enjoyed the Mango Nectar. For our entrees, I had the Pad Thai with Pork and she ordered the Pad See Ew with Beef. The portions were definitely bigger than they looked and everything was cooked perfectly! I also loved the selection of chili sauces they had on every table, so you can add as much or as little as you want. The service was very quick and attentive, and I loved all the decor. I will definitely be back to try some cocktails and more of the menu!

Eri F.

Yelp
I ordered pad Thai with shrimp to go at 5:30pm on 2/13/2024 and was not impressive. It is not worth $17 + tip. It was dry and shrimp had freezer like smell, after taste. Since this restaurant has many good reviews, I was excited to try their pad Thai. Maybe if an opportunity presents itself, I might try them again a year from now.
google avatar

Raquel S.

Yelp
Waiting in the pouring rain for Mee Sen's Khao Soi Gai was worth the frizzy hair! In addition to Khao Soi Gai, we also tried the Crab Wontons, Khao Mon Gai Tod, Mhoo Dang Pork Noodles, and the Thai Girlfriend (cocktails). The staff was friendly and small restaurant has a cozy & simple vibe.

Vicky N.

Yelp
Authentic, delicious Thai food! Great service as well. They have a lot of dishes that I've only seen sold in Thailand. I love the ambience of the place! It made me feel like I was in Thailand eating the street food. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Yelp
This might be my new fav Thai in Portland. Have been wanting to check it out since moving here and am sad now it took so long. This is the real deal! The staff are so friendly and attentive which is a rarity nowadays. It made our experience even more amazing! The restaurant is super cute and the the decor reminded me of being in NYC at one of their amazing back alley tiny restaurants with divine cuisine. The menu has a lot of offer and they have a full bar. We left so stuffed that we never made it to dessert. Next time! The crab wontons and mussels were piping hot and seasoned perfectly. I got the Thai girlfriend cocktail and it was light and fresh! Perfect balance to the heat of the food. Both entrees came out piping hot and full of flavor. Can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Yelp
Have visited dozens of times since moving to Portland. Personal favorite is their tofu fresh rolls and Pad Se Ew. Beautiful outdoor seating with views of the rest of Mississippi and service keeps up with the busy atmosphere. Extensive menu and helpful staff. Lacking a bit in allergy accommodation but overall wonderful!!

Yelp
Finally had the opportunity to check Mee Sen Thai for dinner and what can I say, this place hands down was delicious! I had this place bookmarked for a long time and glad the hubby and I got to check them out and try their delicious food. While checking out the menu, I wanted to order everything because everything looked and sounded so good, but I knew I couldn't, so I picked out a few items, just enough to satisfy our Thai cravings. Keep in mind, they have a lot of options to choose from and depending on what you're craving, you'll be satisfied for sure! We picked out a coconut noodle soup, another noodle soup, pineapple fried rice, the combination sampler and two drinks. Everything was so delicious and our bellies were so happy and full. One thing I really appreciated before ordering our food was how our waitress was so wonderful and awesome! She greeted us from the moment we walked in and was so helpful throughout our dining experience. We walked in and were seated right away, no wait since there was an empty table available for a party of two. The ambiance was nice, pretty chill and low-key vibes as the noise level was just right. I can't remember the name of our waitress, but she was very honest with her suggestions and I'm glad she recommended the items we went with, love how people are transparent and honest with their suggestions. Also, the passion fruit and tamarind drinks were delicious. The passion fruit drink was so delicious, I came back the next day to have it again! I'm definitely going to miss this place until I return to PDX! Definitely a great place for authentic Thai food, I highly recommend it! Until next time, Mee Sen Thai!

Maso S.

Yelp
Great location, thai food and friendly staff. We received a Christmas gift at the end of our meal. Definitely recommend this place to anyone that wants a great meal.

Yelp
Dropped by Mee Sen on a weekday and was so surprised by just how cute this place was! We initially had plans to go somewhere else but the wait was going to be ridiculous so we opted to walk over to Mee Sen instead. There's both indoor/outdoor seating and the interior is small but very cute. We were seated right away, woohoo!, and got the ball rolling with thai teas. Have to say, their thai teas were deliiish~ We were given both typed out menus as well as a picture book type of menu and to be honest, I appreciated both because I am guilty of pulling up Yelp to look at pics of food items l o l We were all pretty indecisive but I ended up going for the pad kraprow with tofu medium spicy. I'm not going to lie, I did look around repeatedly for an eggplant dish on the menu, but alas none to be seen so I deviated from my usual order. That being said, the pad kraprow was delicious and the medium spice level was juuust right -- did I willingly make it somewhat unbearable by dumping chili sauce, chili oil, dry chili, and pickled jalapeno on it? Y E P I sure did. The portions were fair for the price and you could easily finish your dish if you came in hungry. One of my friends got a noodle dish which she really enjoyed as well. Parking: street as per the Portland usual, service: super friendly and made the whole night better. Prices are fair and food is good so swing by and eat here before jumping over to Stem Wine Bar for some sips~

Yelp
Charming location, with prompt and attentive service. The presentation was delightful. My only reservation for not awarding 5 stars is that it didn't quite deliver the freshness and elevated taste I anticipate for the given price.
google avatar

Eva C.

Yelp
Parking is hard on Mississippi. No reservations, so a bit of a wait on Sunday night but we came at a good time.. it smells really good as soon as we walked in, and the ambiance is very We got the crab wontons and pad Thai and dry egg noodles with crab. The flavors are very strong and tasty!

Rebecca K.

Yelp
We stopped here during the Mississippi Ave street fair. We had the Thai iced tea, pineapple fried rice and my bowl (#23) had dungeoness crab and pork loin with fried garlic and nuts sprinkled atop. This is the best Thai I've had in Portland. I'll be returning to try their other dishes.
google avatar

Joy P.

Yelp
We ordered Herb jelly Thai Iced Tea, Moo Ping(pork skewers), Look Chin Ping(Beef meatballs), and Ba Mhee Haeng Poo Mhoo Dang( egg noodles with crab meat, and BBQ Pork Loin). I was craving Egg noodles with BBQ pork. There was a good amount of BBQ pork loin and crab meat but the sauce underneath the noodles was a little too sweet but cravings satisfied. We also ordered the boat noodle soup(not pictured) but it was pretty good the flavor reminds me of Thailand boat noodle soups. I recommend their boat noodle soup. When we took a bite of the pork skewers it was hot on the outside but cold on the inside. Great service.

Yelp
Cute little Thai food restaurant with authentic thai food with some twist. We ordered mhee krob rad nah and giew krob pad Thai. Both portions were hefty and satisfying! The flavors were on point. The servers were also very attentive. Will definitely recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
This place serves authentic Thai street food. The ambience is also very authentic to what you would see in Thailand. We ordered the Khao Soi Gai and pad krapow mhoo krob. Both were delicious and had really good heat.

Yelp
Thai noodle dishes are so hard to come by in the US. Let alone all the various variety this place offers. I immediately jumped at the opportunity to check this place out cause of the more niche options they have. And they did deliver! Very accurate Kanom Jeen (could have been spicier but that's just me). Tender and fresh kanom jeen as well as veggies. Creamy and fishy (in a good way) curry. Brought me right back to home. Totally would go back to check out other options. The Suki Haeng is one to try for those who haven't had that dish before.
