Bar Owners and Alders Oppose Chicago’s Alcohol Tax Hike Proposal | Eater Chicago

"A location within the 2Bears Tavern Group whose co-owner Mark Robertson warned about the consumer and staffing fallout if the tax forces price increases, saying: “Less customers who do come in are spending less. They’re trading down from the local craft beer that by nature cost more for the Miller Lite. They’re making choices to tip our employees less,” Robertson says, and adding, “What used to be able to support a larger staff, we’ve had to reduce our staff count by 15 percent in the last four months to compensate for these costs that we’re getting hit with. It simply doesn’t work.”" - Leigh Giangreco

Service and atmosphere was fab. My ex and I actually signed our divorce papers here together and it was still a great night. Matt lined us up with Malort for the bitter times, something juicy n’ sweet for the good times, and vodka for strength. 10/10.

Google
Very disappointed with the service during my visit on Saturday, June 5th at 10:30 PM (bottom floor). After ordering a glass of wine, I was refused a simple glass of water and told I had to purchase a bottle instead. That kind of policy feels inhospitable. It left a bad impression, and I’ll seriously think twice before coming back.

Ever since Meeting House began bringing in DJs it’s really changed the vibe and bringing in an atmosphere that Andersonville has been missing. There’s not many places that you can still hangout, but also enjoy the great music and vibes they curate! Also, love the Friday Night DJs, Ryan and Kelsie, definitely recommend checking them out!

This is a very welcoming and fun spot. The atmosphere is comfortable and safe, and Bee is always friendly and inviting. With great games like shuffleboard and board games, it’s a perfect place to relax and have a good time. Highly recommend!

Google
Very clean and aesthetically pleasing bar. Well lit and seems like they have almost nightly shows ranging from Bingo, to RuPauls Drag Race showings to even a burlesque show. They are a full service bar but what I loved is they had a fairly range non-alcoholic section of CBD and THC infused drinks. Two levels make finding a seat easy without the hassle of taking someone’s spot or sitting next to strangers.

Google
my friends and i were in chicago for the weekend and this was a great experience. the free darts, skeeball, and pool was wonderful and the bartender was efficient and accurate with drinks. i would recommend this bar for its inclusive crowd and wonderful service.

Great, friendly neighborhood bar. Welcoming to all sorts. Awesome karaoke Thursday nights!

Google
Great, relaxing bar. I've been here twice and both times it's been a very fun and relaxing time. Karaoke one night, then just hanging out the next time. Matt is a great bartender and had a fun time talking with him. Will be one of our hangouts from now on! Hamm's beer and a very tasty Cosmo!!

Yelp
If I lived in Chicago, at least in the North Side, you'd probably find me here a lot. That's because it felt less like a bar and more like a gathering place. Or I guess I should say a "gay-thering" spot. Spreading over two floors, it manages to be spacious and cozy at the same time. There are bars on both floors which makes hanging around super-convenient. As expected, there are pool tables as well as skeeball and darts. Watch out for the latter as they fly right in front of the stairwell. Jamie W. and I settled down on the main floor and had their special $5 Margaritas (photo: https://yelp.to/dK4BE5czs3). What made them special? Hey, they're $5. Needless to say, we had a couple each and were feeling no pain with the friendly staff and customers to be found here. DRINKS - 4.5 stars...did I mention the $5 margaritas? AMBIANCE - 5 stars...fun and chill SERVICE - 5 stars...doubly chill TOTAL - 5 stars...gay-ther together RELATED - Exploring Chicago? Here's my collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/44c4CZO

Yelp
I was grabbing dinner with my friends in the area, and we came here afterwards for a drink. I LOVE that the games were free on the second floor. Such a treat to play darts and skee ball! Feels like a neighborhood bar, and atmosphere was good. I'd come back!

Yelp
Walked in and the bartender couldn't serve me because he was eating a sandwich. This company is trash. Idk why I continue coming to their bars. Last week at Sofo I watched as the twinky bartender, who couldnt have been more than 22, SHOOK the Negroni I ordered. Rather than let him ruin a 2nd drink, my next one was a whiskey Coke and he then proceeded to squeeze lime into it!!! No one wants lime in their whiskey. yes a RUM and Coke has a lime, but lime and whiskey is DISGUSTING. I've been to all of their bars and not a single bartender knows what they're doing, they're always eating behind the bar and I know from experience their bartenders hookup in the bathrooms. Which, let's face it, is the only reason worth coming here. Too bad they don't actually know how to bartend or this might be a worthwhile place to spend my money and time; but again... no one wants lime in their whiskey drink.

Yelp
This place is great! I LOVE that they have two bars, one on the main floor and another on the second floor. It's BYOF (Bring your own food), LOTS of great selections nearby; Pizza, Sushi, Mexican, etc. Drinks are always good and strong! They also have board games you can play! 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
Dropped my tequila water + mio energy on the floor and it didn't shatter - very high class!!

Yelp
This is a neighborhood bar but they treated us south and west loopers very well when we stopped by one cold night after dinner at Sun Wah! The downstairs is comprised of a large bar and lounge chairs and communal tables and a fair amount of games! The upstairs has a more crowded bar and free darts and ski ball! We were really surprised because the machines were mostly available all the time (which is way better than Replay where the machines are always busy and cost money). Meeting house has a pretty ambiance with the lights, is roomy, and fun for groups. I will be back to play more games and have some yummy boozy slushies.

Yelp
Delicious margarita on tap, really great service, super chill about bad skeeball players.

Yelp
I love this place! Free pool, darts, ski ball and other games. It's kind of like Replay in that it's a chiller gay bar with more things to do. Drinks are fairly cheap and it's a great place for a lower key date or to hang out with friends. They have drag shows too which changes it up a bit. Definitely worth coming to! Great down to earth gay bar.

Yelp
Jojo is an angel. Came here for a quick birthday drink for a friends siblings birthday, and they made them feel so special. Looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
Welcome to the neighborhood! A good use of the Cantina 1910 utter failure, this place looks like a great new place in a great neighborhood. Popped in here on a Saturday for a few bevs. There are specials on Saturday, which is unusual, but greatly appreciated! Vodka drink special, who does not like a good vodka drink special. Two, please! Sure, this is a "gay bar", but this being Andersonville, that's a term for "everyone" bar. Friendly staff, friendly patrons, that's how we roll here, in the bluest neighborhood in the blue city of Chicago. Very welcoming and fun. I will definitely come back here to have a couple of pops!

Yelp
We hosted a party for 50 guest last night and everything was absolutely perfect. The catering was setup by Hutch which is located next door. The owners of Meeting House coordinated everything with the Hutch to set us tables reserved for our guests. We had such an amazing time and I would highly recommend The Meeting House and Hutch as a great event space! All of our guests has so much fun! Thank you again for everyone that helped make our special day such a great experience!

Yelp
I used to come here regularly but got married and have been hanging out at my husband spots. My husband is Mexican and prefers places with a little more diversity but recently we started stopping in once and a while and tonight I don't think I have ever felt so unwelcome anywhere. When we arrived there were 5 or 6 people and two bartenders working. We stood at the bar quietly waiting for someone to rake are order or at least smile while one bartender played on his phone and the other sat with his arms folded. He eventually came over and apologized for the wait and gave us good service for the rest of the time we were there. We got up to use the restroom and as we walked into the bathroom we were yelled at and told bathrooms were for one person only. Last week we walked in on two guys having sex in the same bathroom. I went in used it and as I was walking out i held the door for my husband to go in and we were yelled at again. I explained that I was simply holding the door and the man said they were having problems with multiple people using the bathroom together. We then enjoyed a drink and watched as several people came in and used the bathroom together without anyone stoping them. I got up a little later by myself and used the restroom by myself and felt the managers eyes on me the whole time. we felt singled out so we left.

Yelp
Cheap drinks, friendly staff and fun atmosphere. What more could you ask for? Sunday social is a must by the way

Yelp
Decided to check out the new Meeting House Tavern last night and I was really impressed (Yay for being the first to review!). The space is gorgeous! Really modern and rustic decor, clean, bright, and tastefully decorated. A few couches throughout the place where you can sit, casually have a drink, and chat with friends. There are tables and benches downstairs with lots of tabletop and board games. Upstairs had skee ball, a pool table, arcade games, darts, and table shuffleboard. The best part was, all the games are FREE! They have large TV's throughout the bar, which I assume they'll show sports/games, music videos, or special events on them. They have a TouchTunes, which all my friends loved, since they think they are all professional DJ's - haha! Rented a trolley for my birthday and decided to make Meeting House one of our stops. They had no issues accommodating us. There were 31 one of us and everyone enjoyed the stop. Their staff was very friendly, service was prompt, and everything was reasonably priced (a plus that they have a downstairs and upstairs bar). Besides their usual drinks, they had special slushees as well. The space makes it seem like you're entering some new trendy bar, but not pretentious at all, and the staff and other patrons make it feel like a neighborhood bar where everyone knows one another already. Everyone was just very laid back and very friendly with our group (which is difficult when 31 people bombard a bar and everyone is at different levels of inebriation). This place seems like a great addition to Andersonville! Good neighborhood bar, great vibes, good drinks, music, and free games, what else could you ask for? I heard they are going to have special theme nights like karaoke, movie/game nights, so I'll definitely come back to check them out. Oh, I forgot to mention, free popcorn!

Yelp
So excited to have a new gay bar in the neighborhood. Despite being a "gay" bar it's much more of an all inclusive, all are welcome kind of bar. They have delicious slushees, the skeeball is free and fun, and tons of board games. I love the concept overall, but the layout of the games upstairs is a bit wonky. This would be a five star review if it weren't for the odd layout upstairs. I'd move the darts to where the Skee ball is, remove the tables upstairs and put the pool table around that, put the Skee ball where the shuffle board is, and I don't know but figure out the shuffle board! Will be back overall. Great new place!

Yelp
Updating this since the owner gave a satisfactory reply that I felt was professional. Given they fix the sound issue I have a lot of interest in drinking at this bar. Came last night looking to play pool. Music was at 11 and ridonkously loud and their was like 5 people there so not sure why the music would be Omaha g so loud. Not sure who you are supposed to meet or talk to there as the staff clearly wants to put the music extremely loud which doesn't seem to match the aesthetic or vibe. Is this a nightclub or is it a tavern? Anyway I left before getting a drink as it was too loud.

Yelp
Meeting House is a great spot to grab a beer with friends. They have social events throughout the week, and free bar games. Sunday drag shows can get wild if you're into it.

Yelp
We went to Meeting House Tavern yesterday, eager to check out the space and play some free pool. But if you're heading there to play pool--don't. While the free games are super cool (especially the skee-ball!--yea!), there was apparently very little thought put into how the upstairs game space should be arranged. The darts are at the top of the stairs. The pool table is center of the room, but with what space is available, it was increasingly impossible to play as more people arrived. One side of the table you fight with earnest bar patrons; at the end of the table where the shuffle-board is, we had to wait upwards of 3 minutes per turn for the inconsiderate, uncooperative shuffle-boarders to finish their turn at the side of their table. It just wasn't...fun. We should have gone to Farragut's. Also, the staff came by and took my drink away--not once, but twice!--before I had finished it. I'm sure we'll return for the slushies and skee-ball. Hopefully, as kinks get worked out, they'll redesign the upstairs space.

Kelsey O.

Yelp
To the guy at the lower bar on Sunday night, I apologize. Apparently you witnessed me & my boyfriend breaking up. You tried so hard to ensure we were well taken care of and having a good time. Sorry!! Thnx for your support... much love

Yelp
Seems like it could be a good place to hangout, love the games on the second floor and the bathroom signs. However, a change in staff might be needed as the Bartender on the second floor is a complete and total dick. Ordered a drink and started to drink it as I watched Ru Paul's Drag Race. Slightly bored I ran my fingers along the rim of the glass as I watched the show. I noticed a chunk of the glass was missing and went back to the bar. I asked if I could please get a glass with out a hunk of it missing. He grabbed a new glass, poured the current drink into a new glass, lifted the old glass to shoulder level dropped it in a big show into the trash, put a new straw in the new glass and put it back on my side of the bar. Said nothing at all and gave a look of there you go.... With customer service like that I don't care how hot he thinks he is, they won't keep clientele.

Yelp
My partner and I and some friends stopped in Saturday 7/22 after work. Pretty good vibe going on, the living room feeling is cool. We ordered some generously poured cocktails from the bar, found a spot upstairs and played Uno! I won twice. The crowd was friendly. Only thing I'd add is don't forget the upstairs bar! The line downstairs was loooong.

Yelp
Meeting House is such a great neighborhood bar! The events are super fun and the staff is very friendly. I always feel welcome here!

Yelp
Ok where do I begin. Good space, great place to chill with friends but omg the Wells vodka was gross!!!! The most disgusting thing I've ever tasted!!! I asked the bartender what is it and he showed me the bottle with an "organic" sign on it!! Please no!!!eww!
google avatar

Ricky H.

Yelp
Enjoying a chill evening with friends! Crowd is friendly and not over crowded and Antonio is the most attentive bartender I've had! Thanks for a fun relaxing night!

Yelp
Have been here three times...will definitely be back! Staff is great, Karaoke DJ is fun and friendly!

P H.

Yelp
FIRST TIME PATRON... consider hiring a "doorman" (used loosely) with manners! - the bar stool I sat on had more personality than him! - I didn't need him telling me what to do! - I had ordered an Uber and was waiting for the driver to arrive! - he was BEYOND confrontational; and, quite honestly, I didn't need his attitude! - will think twice about going there again...

Yelp
The staff is amazing, especially Danny. Reasonable drink prices, great happy hours, beautiful venue. Everything is top notch.

Nate W.

Yelp
Really amazing place! Mature Atmosphere, clean, modern, fun and love the added bonus of the games. One major complaint is the drinks are to EXPENSIVE! The glasses are full of ice and chaser and very LITTLE ALCOHOL...I hope this review open there eyes to this issue because I want this bar to succeed!!!

Bobby M.

Yelp
What a perfect place for the LGBT community. Such a great place with pool, darts, other game and lots of room to drink and chill with friends. I love the crowd that this place attracts. It's all over the board. And it's so very great to see so many people from so many different backgrounds get together to have a good time. Also, Danny the bartender is a real cutie. ;-)

Elyse N.

Yelp
This place was so welcoming and fun! Free popcorn? Amazing drink deals? The Queerest Atmosphere? This place checks al the boxes! Come check it out l!

Jon F.

Yelp
Stopped in here and was really impressed. It's a beautiful space and I appreciate all of the board and arcade games! I especially liked how diverse the clientele was (it was mostly men but all types of men). If I could, I'd probably give it 4.5 stars since they didn't have a drink/cocktail menu and I'm not a huge highball drinker. But, I understand if that isn't the vibe they are going for. I'll definitely be back!

Jacob S.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. It offers a chill vibe and is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. Great drinks specials and the staff has all be nice and welcoming. Love the variety of games they have, too. A new favorite staple!

Barbi P.

Yelp
What an amazing bar! Beers are greatly priced and the atomsphere is amazing. Sit down and play a game and enjoy a nice cold beer!

Yelp
Had a friend visiting from out of town so the four of us stopped in to Meeting House Tavern around 6:30pm last night as an alternative to Marty's and Replay. We had heard mixed reviews about it, but we wanted to give it a try in the spirit of supporting a new business. As soon as we walked in, I had the sense that I had walked into a student meeting center. It is sparsely decorated, there are games scattered on a few of the tables and the upstairs (with a few larger games like pool, air hockey) seemed like an afterthought. I probably would not be writing any of this, however, had we been served! After touring the upstairs, we returned to the main floor and sat at one of the large tables downstairs. There was one bartender chatting with customers at the bar and the other server, who had been serving people in the main area when we walked in, had all but disappeared. After waiting about 15 minutes, we left and went to an established bar where we were greeted and served the moment we walked in.
