Megenagna Mart and Cafe - Review - Wells Branch - Austin - The Infatuation

"Equal parts grocery store and restaurant, Megenagna delivers on its name, and it does it deliciously. The long menu covers all of the classic Ethiopian dishes, including a few breakfast specialties like chechebsa (fried flatbread) and spiced scrambled eggs with injera. This is a takeout-heavy operation—we like to order the veggie combo and a few meats that we can turn into multiple meals at home—but when we’re in the dining room, we get the awaze tibs. The beef is savory and well-seasoned, the bell peppers add a bright crunch, and the whole thing arrives on a sizzling skillet that would make the showiest fajita platter jealous." - Nicolai McCrary

I love Ethiopian food and some of the dishes here were good, but there are others that were just not as good as some of the other restaurants. I like the injera when it’s a little bit more sour, and this was a little bit under fermented for my taste. And maybe this was just the lunch menu, but it seemed like they didn’t have as much in the way of variety as some of the other restaurants. And there was only one combo, which was a veggie combo. It would be nice to be able to order a combination meal with both veggie and meat dishes. The service was great and the people were very friendly. There’s a market next-door, which has East African staples which is kind of fun to walk around in since I lived in East Africa for a few decades, but overall as an Ethiopian restaurant, I would say there’s some other places that I would probably prefer, if for no other reason than the larger variety of dishes.

The customer service here is the best every one came by to check on the white boy who was eating the spicy food. The Duro Wat was the best I have ever had tender and savory, after the first bite I inhaled the rest of the bowl. The Awaze Tibs were fresh and cooked perfectly and if I had any more room in my stomach I would have finished them off as well. 10/10 would recommend this place since I will be back for more

The food was amazing - the nicely sour spongy bread, curries and veggie dishes, and especially the traditional coffee. The service felt like we were guests in their home, so warm and welcoming. The hostess served us coffee and popcorn in the traditional way, which felt like a performance. We sat in special space, immersed in incense and the smoke & smell of freshly roasted coffee, sitting on traditional stools and chatting after the meal. A very memorable experience!

The food was super delicious! We had the yellow lentils and veggie platter and everything had so much flavor! The injera was especially delicious and we couldn't get enough of it. The best part? You can buy some fresh injera or spices in the attached market. We're surprised it wasn't busier than it was but it was nice to have a quiet meal :)

What a pleasant surprise! We came here because another restaurant we were going to go to was closed so we thought we'd give this one a try. The food was absolutely incredible! Very large portions. The staff was wonderful. We were even given a gift of food and coffee to try. Cannot recommend enough. Will be back for sure.

This place is authentic Ethiopian cuisine. It was fresh and had great flavor. My partner and I both had the Veggie Combo, which was good. The injera was very fresh. Added bonus they have Ethiopian beer and wine! It is attached to a mart, which also sells the Ethiopian beers which was good to know.

I had an incredible dining experience at Megenagna Mart and Cafe. The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff was both friendly and attentive. The restaurant beautifully captures the richness of Ethiopian cuisine, coupled with the warmth of a traditional coffee ceremony. The relaxed atmosphere added to the inviting charm of the place.

Best Ethiopian food in the Austin area! Great shiro and two kinds of injera. Wish they had a South Austin location....

Yelp
It's not much to behold, little more than a few tables in the back of a small grocery store, but the Ethiopian eats are one point. Of course, you need the veggie combo to try a little bit of everything, but my favorite dish was actually the yetsom firfir; injera mixed with a rich tomato, red bell pepper, and onion stew. I regret not getting a better photo of it; it's the lump covered by more injera in the back. Peep the spirals of teff flatbread sneaking out from underneath to get an idea of what to expect, but you should really try it for yourself. It's incredibly umami, highly seasoned without being spicy, and just everything I'm craving on a gloomy weather day.

Yelp
This place is fairly new. It opened in 2023 and appears to be locally owned. This is a store and cafe. You can find spices, coffee, ceramics, and other items in addition to food. We ordered the beef awaze tibs and vegetarian platter. The awaze tibs were not good. I'd give the awaze tibs 2/5 stars. The meat was tough and very very bland. I'm not sure if it was just an off day or what. The vegetarian plate was divine and completely blew us away. The veggie plate is a solid 5/5 stars.

Yelp
Wow! This place has the best coffee in Austin! I usually put cream in my coffee; I find black coffee to be undrinkable -- but not here! Cream would ruin it! I hope this place stays around!
