The Best Marionberry Pies in Oregon | Eater Portland

"This old-school breakfast cafe in Portland’s Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood is a sweet spot to stop for a giant omelet and, if you’re lucky, a marionberry scone, with giant fresh berries embedded into its facade. Mehri’s always has some sorts of endearingly lumpy pies and mini-pies in its case; in the summers, marionberry is in common rotation, a stunner with a not-too-sweet filling and a rich, tender crust. Pies are available for pre-order — otherwise, call ahead to make sure there’s a slice in the case." - Janey Wong

I wish I lived closer so I could go here every day for breakfast or lunch. Baked goods look like they are really made with love. Food comes out hot, expertly done, and well portioned. Flavors are very traditional but super good. The cafe has a small entrance area but that makes sense since you should come in and sit down. But a pastry to go. Future you will thank you.

Google
Tasty! Tasty! This has become our favorite breakfast spot over this past summer! The patio is warm and welcoming matching the atmosphere the workers create. The meals are generous and delicious! The service is top notch and they have some damn good coffee! Also, grab a couple of the incredible pastries to go for an afternoon snack. Great bike ride and open to pups on the patio as well! 🐕‍🦺🍳

The place location is eye catchy. Quite place, makes you really relax. Staff is super super friendly. Decoration is simple and cozy. Coffee is less than regular. Cake needs improvement.

I’m a celiac and have to have gf meals. Nearly everything at Mehri’s is gluten free and they use very high quality ingredients. The creamy potatoes are unique and very tasty. Portions are generous. Enjoying breakfast on their patio with a mimosa…yep…what a great way to start your Portland day. Highly recommend and look forward to coming back. Good service and reasonable price…what are you waiting for?

Google
Me and my family went in for breakfast. They have a lot of options. The food was very tasty me my husband had the chicken fried steak with creamy potatoes and my son had a breakfast burrito and the breakfast burrito was very large. We did ask for a side of the creamy potatoes like five bucks, but the portion was super small it was roughly about 3 x 3 square of scallop potatoes and a quarter inch thick and for the price that we paid for it if I had known that I would not have ordered that. I would go back

Google
It may look like your average neighborhood cafe and bakery and Mehri's is anything but! A neighborhood gem indeed. Don't judge a house by its color. My mom told me about this place many years ago and raved about all the deserts. After looking at reviews and reading the news paper article I was more intrigued. We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and incredible aroma. The pastrie case was definitely eye candy. The restaurant was filling up quickly (it was almost 12:00 pm) and we managed to snag a table. Anthony (the son of Mehri's was incredibly helpful and accommodating) I had such a hard time deciding and he recommended the country breakfast that I turned into a country benedict 😋 I also tried a half order of the croissant french toast and mom got the breakfast sandwich. *Bacon on point 10/10 We even got to meet the owner and it was a pleasure, I am looking forward to going back to this quaint and cozy cafe and bakery.

We just went here for breakfast this weekend and absolutely loved it! I don't even understand how they have so much on their menu and all the baked goods! They also cater Persian food which is absolutely insane and pretty hard to find in portland. This is definitely going to be my new favorite spot and local recommendation.

Google
Now, here's a restaurant that has to be moved to the top of your list...small, cozy and no frills. The "frills" are in the food and is it ever special!! Family run with indoor and outdoor seating.... We had brunch...yummy chicken fried steak with gravy, cheddar cheese scramble and waffles with a side of bacon. Bonus house made jam and bread as well as a tasty version of escalloped potatoes! Best corner of the restaurant is the bakery...😍😍😍

Yelp
I have been coming here for years and I have never had a meal I didn't love. The baked goods and the breakfast are two of my favorites in Portland. I always have the best service, everyone is so friendly and quick. It's an old house so it's got great charm, plenty of parking nearby, and it feels like coming home every time I walk in. I appreciate the calm and quiet environment.

Yelp
Mehri makes amazing cakes, pies, and streudel. We use her for special events. Love supporting small businesses

Yelp
You can tell this is a baker first and a restaurant second because every baked good they serve is exceptional! Loved the biscuits, scone, and bread.

Yelp
A very nice little place. The owners are very nice, busy. Food was generous and flavorful. I had the bacon, onion, cheese scramble. It was a very generous portion (I'm having left overs for dinner tonight, but I have a small appetite). The coffee is good. Dark enough to satisfy my coffee snob but probably acceptable to people who aren't. Rich flavor with very low acid. They had heavy cream for me, I heard someone else ask for non dairy. They happily accommodated both of us. I had expected some middle Eastern offerings but there were none. All in all a very pleasant breakfast. I'll be back.

Yelp
Mehri's was a great lil local joint everyone should try out at some point. We tried Mehri's Cafe & Bakery for the first time this past summer. When we arrived, the place was packed... no hope for a table. Kudos to Mehri's for doing such great business!! Fortunately, they were able to put us at a table outside under their little patio cover. It was nice being outside on a beautiful day and enjoy the sunshine. The waiters and waitresses were all very kind. The new waiter was very nervous about his first day, obviously. He was in training but I can say this much, our waters never ran dry! I had enough coffee in me by the end of brunch I had the shakes! He was adorable and very sweet. The waiter that was in charge of our table was obviously overly-stressed. He only made it to the table a couple times but the one in training was very good about getting us taken care of throughout brunch. I'd give it a solid 5-star review. There is nothing I can say but good things and praise their team and owners!

Yelp
Amazing hand made bakery items along with delicious breakfast items cooked from scratch! The service is very friendly and the ambience is cozy. There is a real atmosphere of pride and joy in sharing outstanding food and welcoming guests. Actually I shouldn't be telling about this since it's already well appreciated and there is often a wait line. Enjoy!

Yelp
Great spot for pie and cake. Banana caramel was incredible. Light and not too sweet and massive - see the cell phone for reference. Apple pumpkin pie was equally good. With homemade whipped cream. Will come again

Yelp
A Portland Treasure, Mehri is not only a gifted chef, but a wonderful entrepreneur with an amazing restaurant. It is mid December and I am at an outdoor table basking in a warm sunny place sipping an excellent coffee. Mehri's son Anthony has opened this quiet patio just for me and my friend from many years ago. We moved inside and ordered the daily special as recommended by Mehri. I asked her about her trip to Morocco last August and she shared her experience with vivid descriptions. Where else in Portland can you find exquisite home made pastries and a full bar? lol!
google avatar

Yelp
Great and friendly service! Their biscuits and gravy breakfast is really good and their coffee is outstanding (in my opinion)!! They offer a lot of baked goods and they will heat up their cinnamon rolls for you (with or without butter added).

Amy B.

Yelp
This us one of our favorite spots in Portland. The crust on their quiche is perfect and their homemade biscuits and jam are insane. The staff are also incredibly kind, the space is really sweet with some good outdoor seating. We love it!!
google avatar

Clare Q.

Yelp
Delicious! Staff are amazing and attentive, food is great and the indoor and outdoor options have been great whether it's for a group or a duo. I will come back to s and I'm glad it's across from a yarn shop!

Yelp
Inviting and welcoming this place was wonderful. With delicious pastries and pies in front the food is made from scratch and fresh. The waitstaff was extremely friendly and it felt like going to Grandmas house. I had a turkey, mushroom anchovies Avocado scramble with homemade biscuit and house made jam. I used a local hot sauce (recommended) and the whole meal was divine! I recommend this place for people who love home cooked meals.

Yelp
Nice people, cute little place. My biscuits and gravy breakfast was good and hot. Eggs were overcooked and black. Gravy was alright, biscuit was really good. So was the bacon and the creamy potatoes which are just scalloped potatoes if you were curious. My friend got the 4 cheese Scramble which wasn't very good or appealing. She also liked the potatoes but they gave her the butts of the toast so she didn't eat any of it. I got a clubhouse to go for my husband with a salad and it was very good. We may go back, it was pretty spendy though.

Yelp
I only stumbled upon Mehri's because I was searching for the best cheesecake in Portland. Here in the 'Couve, I have yet to find The One (though my beloved Forevers Bakery is pretty damn close), but I knew the internet would have the answer. On Reddit, several people said Mehri's was the best, so I checked Postmates because god knows I'm not going over the bridge on a weekday afternoon. Postmates acted as if they'd never heard of Mehri's; it didn't even come up in my search! UNTIL! The next day, I opened Postmates again because I'm bored with life and food brings me joy. To my surprise, Mehri's was magically listed there! I hurriedly ordered a cheesecake, a brownie, and a few cookies, and tipped generously. I assumed a driver would decline my order because it's pretty far, but nearly an hour later MY ORDER ARRIVED! I immediately dove into the first cookie: chocolate chip walnut! I love walnuts, and this cookie was perfection! Crisp-chewy exterior, delightfully buttery, and huge! This is exactly the cookie I wish Crumbl would make; homemade and fully baked; not wet and cake mix-y. The peanut butter cookie was similarly delicious, though pb isn't my favorite cookie because peanut butter gets kinda bitter when cooked (in my opinion). The marionberry cheesecake had the perfect thick NY texture I like, rather than the wet/loose consistency indicative of no-bake cheesecakes or mass-produced desserts. This was absolutely freshly made and the perfect serving, lasting me the entire weekend. I saved the caramel walnut brownie for last, and it was rich & fudgy, without being doughy or wet. I am not super into ooey-gooey cookies and brownies, so I loved that their desserts are texturally firm without being dry and tasteless! I just ordered another cheesecake and brownie for this weekend, and grabbed a snickerdoodle and another cookie (oats, walnuts, and cranberries). Both are seriously some of the best cookies I've had in recent memory. They truly taste like a friend or grandma made them, today, without relying on a mix or cheaping out on the ingredients. I can't wait to try their savory stuff!

Yelp
I visited Portland during one of it's crazy hot weekends, and my friends and I were too lazy to venture out into the unforgiving heat. Ordered this brunch and very happy with our selection. What I ate: - Eggs benedict: This was pretty standard. I wasn't amazing or disappointed. This was exactly what you'd expect - Veggie Scramble: Filled with veggies but still hearty - Country Breakfast w/bacon: I really wanted biscuits and gravy, and this delivered - BLTA salad: This was the surprise part of the meal for me. I wasn't expecting much, but the combo of salty crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, creamy avocado, bites of fresh fruit, all with a nice balsamic vinaigrette. This was nice and fresh to eat. Pros: - Creamy potatoes: Mehri, you minx! All the brekkie dishes came with this as the side, and with each bite I could feel my love handles growing, but did I stop? No. - Great brunch offerings. Everything you could think of, including a handful of lunch offerings - Take out, everything was ordered take out, and everything survived the trip without any deterioration of the quality - Wine/bloody marys on the menu; it's not brunch without booze Cons: - I think this may have been a snafu with the online ordering system, as we also tried to order a slice if their fresh banana cream cake, but instead we got a slice of the german chocolate cake. Did we care enough to contact them and try to rectify it? I think the 100+ temperature deterred us, so we didn't. We still ate the chocolate cake with zeal. Would I come again? If I was in the area, sure

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem and my new local brunch spot! The food is stellar and decadent (cinnamon roll French toast topped with caramel sauce, toasted nuts and cream!) but without the crazy crowds and pretense of so many brunch spots in Portland. And don't get me started on how great the cakes and pies and pastries are! I'm always shocked it's not busier but I I guess that means I don't need to wait for a table.

Bella C.

Yelp
I was fine paying $6 for a loaded brownie because it was made in a bakery but felt let down when my $6 brownie was DRY and crumbly. The staff was polite and the place was clean but for $6 you could get more moist brownies out of a box from the store.

Yelp
Honestly what a cute little bakery/restaurant; I loved it! Mehri's served up the best breakfast I had during my whole trip to Oregon. I got their baked french toast (which is made with a cinnamon rolls) and a side of bacon (1 slice). Both of these were out of this world delicious and something I had to savor each bite of so I didn't eat them too quickly. The french toast was a cinnamon rolls, cut in three, and given the usual french toast treatment but this time also had caramel, pecans, and heavy cream poured on top. It was insane and something I am surprised I haven't seen elsewhere. My side of bacon, though only one slice, was of very high quality and was some of the best bacon I have ever eaten. I was honestly very tempted to take some of their other pastries on display to go because they looked so good but I had to behave at least a little. The owners/employees seemed to know everybody that came in there and were extremely friendly. I asked for some extra cinnamon sugar (if you could believe it) and I was quickly brought a hefty ramekin of it to add to my roll. I will say I wish it was a bit cheaper though. I don't remember the cost of the french toast but $3 for a slice of bacon is pretty pricey (I think it was $7 for three slices). That being said, would I come here again, immediately!

Yelp
We love this little spot for Italian food. The people are great and the food is amazing. The eggplant Parmesan is my favorite. Also, I like the combo of their Alfredo and red sauce on delicious pasta. Dessert: pan a cotta so creamy. Yum! Great place to share food. Oh! Also the bread is addictive.
google avatar

Yelp
Creamy potatoes are my new dopamine food! The service is wonderful and food quality is superb.

Yelp
Apple Marionberry strudel and Marionberry turnover with house coffee was amazing! Coffee perfect just black! Must return for more baked goods and bag of coffee beans for sure!!

Yelp
FAVORITE BREAKFAST SPOT. I've been coming here since my cousin showed me this place a few years ago. Their cinnamon roll French toast is unlike anything else in Portland and the Spanish 3 egg omelette is my go-to!

Alison M.

Yelp
Best food ever Have not anything that was not great Large variety and homemade breads and bakery products

Yelp
Homemade everything. Mehri's doesn't cut corners and it shows. The food may seem dated to some, but Mehri's presents a classic brunch. Eggs Benedict cooked perfectly with a side of scalloped potato. Heaven on a plate for any child of the 80s. Pastries are delicious, homemade bread and jam is delightful. Coffee tastes good. Service is attentive. All around excellent place for brunch. Fills up fast so best to get in early.
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
Every time I'm at Mehri's I feel like I'm at grandmas house! The food is delicious and you can tell it's made with loving hands and good energy. The creamy potatoes are delicious, it's my favorite. The service is fast and kind. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
Totally loved Mehri's, she was right there along with her son Anthony and they've been there for 20 years. I've had her cake at a birthday party that was to die for! It waspoppyseed with Marionberries and whipped cream icing. As a result I came here with 4 for breakfast. They did not disappoint. Fantastic, homemade pastries, very well, prepared varieties of eggs and creamy scalloped potatoes. The hollandaise sauce was perfect, and I am always comparing hollandaise sauces. We highly recommend it, and will come back many times.

Suzanne L.

Yelp
Incredible food, big portions, and fabulous staff! Cozy atmosphere! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
Very cute small, local place. Went for a chill birthday brunch after seeing the good reviews! They have a nice little outdoor seating area and very friendly staff. Not only a nice brunch selection - scrambles, Benedict's, etc - but also a bunch of pastry options! Morning pastries, desserts... full spectrum of sweets. We got the banana cake to share (I forgot to take a pic before digging in!). The frosting was a little... chalky? But overall the cake was still delicious. I'll definitely be back if I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Just when I thought I'd tried all the worthy breakfast spots in Portland I get delighted again by a new experience. I went because I heard the owner is Persian so I was looking forward to something from their rich food culture, but there was nothing of the sort on the menu. Nevertheless, my disappointment quickly turned into a smile as the Chicken Fried Steak (pounded oh so thin by the way) and eggs was very good. The gravy is excellent and you get four generous slices of toast to mop it up. It's also served with "creamy potatoes" which are more interesting than standard home fries or hash browns. My friend's chicken smothered in hollandaise with avocados (I think) looked excellent. They offer an ample mimosa for $6 and you get your choice of pomegranate and other juices besides orange. Service was friendly from the three different people who stopped by our table. If you're tired of weekend brunch lines for A-quality then venture south a bit for a pleasant experience.

Daniel F.

Yelp
Great brunch and bacon bloody Mary's. The pastries are superior and fresh. It's obvious that these folks take pride in their trade.
google avatar

Bryan I.

Yelp
Great local bakery and breakfast, brunch, lunch spot! Come on in and seat yourself where you'd like. The menu has a Persian flair (don't miss the Persian scones with cardamom and pistachios) and Persian hospitality in addition to classics like GIANT pancakes, scrambles, quiche, etc. The plane pancake were delectable, with a mountainous hint of butter at the center. The Fruit Stuffed Pancake was truly gigantic, with a tower of syrupy blueberries and cream. The Spanish omelette was savory, with creamy potatoes on the side. Portions are huge, so think consider sharing unless you just finished a marathon.
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
We ordered the quiche which was just ok. The ham and cheese was crunchy on top and no seasoning in the egg portion. The potatoes were outstanding. We ordered cherry turnovers and received berry. Good, but not what we ordered. The chocolate chip cookies had nuts and raisins. A hard NO.
google avatar

laura k.

Yelp
I want to like it but dang long wait for cold food no seasoning on eggs over salty potato's no jam for toast and the turnover not cherry not Marion but gross apple so disappointed

Katy C.

Yelp
Mehri's is a neighborhood gem! This was my first time here but it won't be my last. Thankful I came with a friend so we could order multiple dishes and share. I highly recommend you order the cinnamon roll French toast as dessert. We also shared the steak and eggs which was enough food for two people on its own! Thank you Mehri and staff for being so welcoming. Great service!

Adrienne F.

Yelp
Oh wow!! I'm so impressed! We ordered a Rueben, a salad and iced tea. The corned beef in the Reuben was stellar--both texture and flavor were stellar. The iced tea was delicious and the salad was nice, too. We enjoyed the place so much that we decided to stay for strudel and are so glad. It was flakey, fruit filled, topped with real whipped cream and just the right amount of sweetness.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
You only get one time to make a first impression. I went there about an hour before they closed and the door was locked with people looking at me. There was a bunch of arrows on the window so I thought maybe that meant there's another door. I walked around but nothing over there. Maybe they are good but I'll never know. Moving on to another establishment.
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
Love this place, best breakfast and lunch menu in town, so many selections. Order breakfast just so you can experience their homemade bread and jam. Oh, and their unique scalloped potatoes. I mean, where else in Portland do you get scallop potatoes w/ your breakfast? Order lunch just so you can experience a cup or bowl of their homemade salmon or clam chowder. Super friendly and attentive servers. Oh, and there's also her pastries!
google avatar

Alesya G.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast. Was shocked (and happy) at how empty this place was. We got seated right away. My kids ordered the pecan cinnamon roll French toast and I had the traditional eggs Benedict. We also tried the cheesecake and the cherry turnover. For starters, the big coffee cups and large creamer holder was amazing. But seriously EVERYTHING we tried was sooooo good! Would definitely recommend

Clay S.

Yelp
I found a $20 bill on the ground last night, and I took it as a sign to take my dear friend Roan on a brunch date to Mehri's (we live nearby but we've never been). We sat at a window seat. We ordered the traditional benedict with creamy potatoes and a fruit stuffed pancake. Both orders were phenomenal. Actually, we were blown away by the care put into both of them, excellent. Ok, I'll just say it, it was one of the top brunch meals I've had since coming to Portland. In fact, I recommend ordering an additional side of their buttered toast because their house made hollandaise and the fruit compote were so delicious that we just had to soak it all up. Yum yum yum. I asked our waitress if Mehri was a real person, and behold, a few minutes later Mehri appeared before us! We talked for several minutes :). What a lovely lady and damn can she cook! I go to brunch every other week and this is now in my top 2 Portland brunch places. I've already talked with some other friends about our perfect morning, we will be back soon!

Yelp
What an unexpected gem of a bakery! We had a birthday emergency where the bakery we had set up to make a cheesecake for a surprise birthday party cancelled our order at the very last minute because one of their bakers called in sick and they were overwhelmed. We called quite a few local places who said they could not accommodate such a last minute request before we called Mehri's and they graciously said they would be happy to make us one on such short notice. At that point we were just happy to have found a place to make us a fresh cheesecake for the birthday boy, but then Mehri was thoughtful enough to also make us an incredible and beautiful fresh huckleberry sauce for us to drizzle over the top as well. What glorious presentation the sauce made for the fresh fruit and her gorgeous cheesecake! (seriously, look/click on that gorgeous photo of her cake below!) But the best part by far was not just that they kindly took our order so last minute, or that they so thoughtfully made a gorgeous fruit sauce to make their cheesecake so beautifully instagram worthy, but it actually was honest to god the best tasting cheesecake i have had since moving West from the East Coast. (and anyone from the NY knows how incomparable the cheesecakes are there) The crust wasnt just any old graham cracker crust, it was an incredibly original, genuinely delicious, chewy, carmel-y crust made of some sort of heavenly cookie. Please support this lovely local bakery - trust me, it is absolutely worth the drive!

Yelp
We rode our bikes up to Mehri's, and they did not disappoint. It's interior, is unassuming and very casual. They have really good desserts, rich and homemade. I usually order the turkey open-faced sandwich, it's the best in town, if you're craving turkey with a boatload of gravy, this is the place to get it! They were out of many of the desserts by the time we swung by and opted for a few random treats. We got one cherry tart, an apple tart, and one of their scones. I'd head in earlier than their closing time to get some freshly baked goodies to go!
google avatar

Yelp
Neighborhood breakfast spots are a wonderful thing to have nearby. I'm particularly happy to have Mehri's in my general part of town. I tried the bacon, onion, and cheese scramble and found it to be a lovely, simple, classic combination that went beautifully with a house made biscuit, and their Creamy Potatoes, which I heartily recommend with any breakfast. My wife loved her oatmeal with quinoa, chia seeds, banana, pecans, and dried cranberries. I have a multiple reasons for wanting to return: the lunch menu, their Persian menu (their artwork appears to be mostly Persian influenced as well), and, certainly not least, the pastry case. Service was friendly and efficient, topping off a lovely dining experience.
google avatar

Casey R.

Yelp
In the brunch hustle it's hard to find a good place that isn't crazy busy. Enter Mehri's. Its never too busy. The staff is super nice and the food is on point.

Yelp
OK, I told Mehri about a year ago that I would write a Yelp Review...and I am just now getting around to it? Yeah...I suck. But as all the good places become popular and become less and less accessible without waiting in a line, I thought I'd be selfish just a little bit longer. I love this place. I usually go there for breakfast and have had eggs benedict with spinach (my favorite) and various other egg concoctions, both simple and scrambled. I've also had the lasagna, meat loaf and french dip. I've enjoyed every meal I've had there. LOVE the creamy potatoes, omg SO good!! and you will find the best strudel in town @ Mehri's, no doubt about that. All the breads and pies are home-made and just delicious... The ambiance is homey. It feels like a friend's kitchen in there; I like that a lot! Sometimes I've gone in and seen people playing chess together. I've had folks I don't know strike up conversations with me, and I have always felt welcome and wanted there. The only thing I would change is the method of payment. It's cash only. She has an ATM so that you can get money out, but there's a fee.

Yelp
What a find. And it's only been here 20 years!!! Seriously good. We split the chicken fried steak and eggs, switched the toast for a biscuit and ordered a side of the sausage gravy (different from the gravy that is made in the pan after the steak is pan fried) so we could have biscuits and gravy. And then we also split the cinnamon pecan French toast but could only manage one of the three pieces between the two of us! What a feast! The stars were the creamy potatoes, gravies, and French toast. This place is NOT afraid of cream! So good.
google avatar

Maya D.

Yelp
I spontaneously stopped in for a latte and a scone after shopping at the knitting store across the street. The scone was absolutely phenomenal, and the service was incredibly friendly. I will probably make a plan to come back next time I need more yarn!

Eric B.

Yelp
Quiet unassuming homely local restaurant in South East Portland. The Deserts and Pastries are 100% fabulous and her Pies are the best in Oregon. The Turkey Dinner we just ordered for Thanksgiving is so beautifully made it's as if my own Great-Grandmas made it. Cinnamon rolls could feed 4 people! Mehris is a SE Portland institution!

Yelp
Great service, amazing home cooked feel and delicious food, nice patio. Can hardly wait to come back and try more! If your looking for a really good breakfast this is the spot.

Quaint little restaurant with delicious homemade food! The Mother & son duo are both friendly and welcoming! My husband and I love eating there. The blueberry pancake special is amazing! Service is fast, food is served piping hot! Highly recommend!
