How Two Fine Dining Restaurants Were Reshaped By COVID-19 - Eater

"Li’s skepticism is significant, given her approach at Mei Mei, which has been a leader in improving working conditions for its employees — including offering health insurance when few other establishments did, and providing new staff members with professional development on the business side of running a kitchen and dining room." - Sara Sheridan

Google
I turned around and left before the door closed completely disgusted with what I heard the greeter say to this poor older handicapped man!! You can't eat in hear there's customers trying to eat you get food and leave!! Because the man's wheel chair bound for life I can't believe that I was hearing this person talked to this poor man like he was less than the rest of us it saddened my wife to tears as I held the door open for him to maneuver his way Out and they had audacity to tell him he needed to pay for the food I told him I'd rather be hungry than eat from that place so please support our eldry HANDICAPPED neighbors and not eat at MEI MEI PLEASE TUCSON .👎👎👎 Thank you for reading my review.

Google
Good food. I ordered chicken with mushroom and vegetables. Portion was nice and delicious. Love the accent of my waitress. Sweet and always smiling. Don’t go to BANGKOK CAFE IN TUCSON. they are rip offs.

Google
Very friendly and fast. Great Lo Mein

Mrs. Salgado

Google
Best Chinese food in town. And staff is very friendly and always punctual. My family has been coming here for at least 10 years and food still great. Must try!

Google
This place is great, best lo mein in Tucson by far, I like to get it as a side for their lunch special when I order beef and bell pepper or kung pao chicken, I’ve been going here for about three years now, their brown sauce is unbeatable Also just want to mention the staff is extremely friendly and always welcoming, I really appreciate them!

John Mason

Google
awesome Chinese food always served hot and happy. no wait to dine in, appears most of their orders are take out, and it seems to be a lot, there's always 2/3 people at the register waiting for orders.. great food every time we eat there.

Sonia Castellanos

Google
Great Tofu! I love it and it is freshly made every time I order it! I love their vegetables!

Yelp
I ate lunch here with a friend yesterday. I ordered a lunch special with a spicy pork dish. It came with two egg rolls, but they didn't bring any sauce for them; I asked for hot mustard and she gave me some packets of it. There were no condiments of any kind on the table, not even soy sauce or hot sauce. The food was nothing special, the service OK, and the place seemed kind of run down. But prices are reasonable. In short, it's a basic old-fashioned Chinese-American restaurant, good for a worker's lunch but definitely not for a date.

Yelp
The yelp ratings got me to stopped by on my home from Texas. Don't get me wrong ... I liked the people in this place. They were friendly, professional, and the service was fast but the food (bbq pork with lo mein noodles, chicken curry, egg drop soup) was bland. 2 lunch specials. I'm positive that if the chef made food like the food he cooks for his family's, I would have love it

Yelp
The restaurant and restrooms weee clean. The servers are friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was well presented and delicious. We always come to eat here when visiting family in Arizona. I highly recommend.

Yelp
In full disclosure, last night was the first time we've tried this restaurant. I would have rated it a 3.5, but gave the BOTD and rated this a 4. We enjoyed our main entrees, but were disappointed in the appetizers. The service was very courteous and our walk-in take-out order for the two of us was ready in 10 minutes. The Twice-Cooked Pork and Walnut Shrimp were delicious and plentiful. However, the Crap Puffs and two Eggrolls were more Puff than Crab, and, Small, respectively. I would absolutely recommend these two entrees again, but skip any appetizers in the future. $47 before the tip. Tip: Closed on Mondays.

Yelp
Great Chinese on the west side. Very consistent and tasty! Their prices are also very reasonable.

Jacques T.

Yelp
Little strip mall joint with NBA playing on the central TV. Very friendly lady at the counter. A bit of a language barrier, but she made great efforts to be welcoming. BBQ pork fried rice was generous with pork. Mushroom stir fry was fresh and saucy.

Yelp
Cozy, humble and family-owned, Mei Mei is really all you need for Chinese in this hood. Everyone seems to come here for the lunch specials, but I could probably eat here for three meals a day. Everything I tried was fresh, piping hot, and perfectly spiced. What I loved: The dinner specials that come with fried wontons, which are filled with pork, and exceptional egg rolls which contain chicken. Their appetizer game is outstanding and you'll need to repress the urge to order plate after plate of little fried morsels. I need me some crab puffs now. Also a big fan of the beef and broccoli. The shoots of broccoli are thicc but that doesn't stop it from being so tender. The sauce this dish comes in is also phenomenal. What I liked: The sesame chicken, a staple for me, and the fried rice is pretty good as well. It always feels good to treat yourself to independent restaurants that outperform big chains. I'd recommend Mei Mei to anyone

Yelp
I was delighted to be able to try Mei Mei via a birthday celebration at a hospital where I extern at. I truly appreciate and recommend this establishment. One of the best Chinese restaurant's in town.
google avatar

Cheryl L.

Yelp
This is the place with the best Chinese food I have found since I moved to Arizona:-)

Rebecca H.

Yelp
We eat often at Mei Mei's and have since 1997. The food is consistently delicious. It's served hot and the portion size is perfect. Our favorite.

Hawk H.

Yelp
Very kind and welcoming customer service. Food is always freshly made to order! Egg RollCrab Rangoon

Yelp
Pretty good food! The waitstaff is super kind and hardworking. They wash down the tables wearing gloves. Who does that? Made me feel good about the cleanliness of the establishment. (Although my eating companion continually expressed that it smelled too much like cleaning products). I am not complaining about cleaning though. My eating companion and I enjoyed Moo Goo Gai Pan and Garlic Chicken - both came with steamed white rice. Although we enjoyed both meals they tasted virtually the same. I loved the medley of vegetables which included - mushrooms, water chestnuts, cabbage, carrots, broccoli AND it was all super fresh - like crisp to the cabbage fresh! There are some elements that would make a person question if the food will be good or not. The Yelp reviews seem to be a mixed bag. The sign lacks some lighting and this Restuarant is located in a fairly sketchy looking strip mall. But, it is worth trying as there were plenty of patrons and lots of people who seemed to be regulars. I would eat here again!

Yelp
WARNING!!!! OMG this food is I love Chinese food and this place is now my favorite. It beats my former favorite place in Long Beach, CA. We orderd kung pao chicken with peanuts, musho vegi and chicken chow-mein with crispy noodles. It was all chicken breast, which was tender and delicious. Kung pao was my favorite, the flavor was amazing. I was happily surprised and impressed on how fast our meal came, and super hot, like it should be. The chow-mein was my daughters favorite, she said shes never had this dish taste so good. We also orderd the crab puffs, maybe less cream cheese and more crab taste, but still good. We went on a Sunday, they close at 9pm. We showed up at 8:40 pm, and they were very welcoming. We will definitley be back for the lunch special. Highly recommended

Yelp
Horrible, BBQ Pork & fried rice. As you can see, the container is melted where they just nuked my meal! Nasty! Nasty! Nasty! But my dog ate it! Honestly, Panda is better and that ain't saying much but at least their food is cooked fresh.

Seth L.

Yelp
I have tried dozens of Chinese restaurants in Tucson & the surrounding areas and NONE have been really as authentic as Mei Mei. They have been in business for 30+ years here in Tucson, and despite its low key outward appearance, there's no question why this business continues to thrive. Incredible lunch special! Big portions, reasonably priced, while always being greeted with a smile. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. 10/10!

Yelp
I ordered takeout so I can't say anything about the service but the food was terrible.

Yelp
Ok, if you leave a restaurant and hope you don't get sick from the food, you can't leave a good review, not one more than 1 star, however the wait staff were friendly and attentive and prompt. So I caved and gave it 2 stars. Warning:. The food was pretty terrible. I ordered orange chicken and with the first bite I tasted old meat. Maybe it was freezer burned, I'm not sure. Just horrible. I had the lunch special for $6.99 and they gave me bad corn starchy soup and lo mein that was barely passable to eat. The egg rolls were tiny, but I didn't care because they were bland and contained no meat. So I just ate one of the 2 they served. They were about an inch long. Won't ever go back, it was a waste of money. You can get better food at a mall food court. Not that I would ever choose Chinese at a mall food court. Keep looking for better places.

Yelp
I tried to edit my review but couldn't. 25 Jul 2020 - I'm looking at some of my old reviews. This one was pretty poor. I didn't even say what I had and now I forgot, duh, but whatever it was it was off the Secret Chinese Menu and quite good. They told me their duck was super great and much better than my friend's duck at the Asian deli inside Lee Lee's (I can never remember the name of his place - and his wife runs the Viet restaurant inside Lee Lee's too I can't remember that name either, but it's real good, but it's been closed because of a kitchen fire). I did go back and ordered the duck, but I still think my friend's is the best (but not the best in the world), so leave it at 4 stars. I haven't been around the neighborhood lately so I haven't been back since then. When I'm down there again I'll get...wow frog in hot chili oil! Do they really have that? That sounds interesting...but I've had frog legs a couple of times and it tastes like chicken doesn't it?. My friend at the great Chef Wang restaurant has frog too but I haven't tried it. Friendly people. PS Most dinosaur meat tastes like chicken too, the herbivorous variety anyway.

Yelp
Best fresh, quick, and inexpensive Chinese in town or at least for us here on the West side. Chen is very friendly and helpful. We've enjoyed the honey walnut shrimp, spicy and salty shrimp, Kung Pao tofu, spicy eggplant, lowmein, crab Rangoon, and potstickers. You will not go wrong with any of these items. Fresh and friendly. Enjoy Also, get the best Chinese foot massage a few doors down at Enjoy Foot Massage. Ask for Daniel.

Yelp
One of our favorite places for Chinese food. The staff are super friendly and the food is always delicious.

Yelp
Mei Mei blew me away with their delicious food, quiet atmosphere, and amazing customer service. This was my first time visiting but will definitely be back soon! I ordered the shrimp Lo Mein and a small hot and sour soup. The Lo Mein was a huge proportion for only $9 and was incredible. The hot and sour soup was delicious and the perfect amount of food for $2. My roommate also enjoyed the crab puffs which were INCREDIBLE & some vegetable Lo Mein. The staff was so incredibly sweet and the service was shockingly fast. I can not say enough good things about this place! We will definitely be back, I would highly recommend trying this little hole in the wall if you get a chance!!

Yelp
I feel that this place has a lot of comfort food. It's been around so long that my family has a mix of different memories here good and bad but the food is always good and doesn't change

Bruce K.

Yelp
Worst Chinese food that we have ever ate. Egg drop soup taste like cleaner, fried rice taste weird, general Tao's chicken is like black pepper chicken and chicken broccoli is weird tasting as well. Avoid at all cost. Not worth the money.

Yelp
Always my go to place for Chinese food when I visit Tucson. The wait staff really nice and food was fast and tasty. Only place I found that they had as an appetizer Chicken wrapped in foil as appetizer-something from my childhood. Very happy.

Marie Corum ..

Yelp
Food is delicious and service could not be better! I will definitely be going back. I could not believe how few people were there...Tucson is missing out!

Andrew S.

Yelp
One of the best places in Tucson to get some good Chinese food. The lunch specials are absolutely incredible. I always get the Mongolian beef on lo mein, which paired with the egg rolls and soup at the price it is, is just a killer deal. Outside lunch hours, I'll often place an order of some beef lo mein to go on my way home from work. I am definitely going to be trying some new things, the reviews are very helpful! The service is super friendly and quick. The family special is a really nice deal as well, very much worth it. Also, the hot and sour soup is absolutely to die for. I love few things more in life than a good bowl of hot and sour soup, and theirs does not disappoint.

Yelp
Good, authentic food prepared here! Great staff and courteous & professional service. Good value for portions and price of menu items. Lunch specials available.

Humberto R.

Yelp
Food is amazing. Service is 10/10. Tried the sesame chicken and orange chicken. Will be back again soon.

Yelp
Mei Mei how did this place ever amass 4 stars??? The only good thing I can say about Mei Mei is that I've unfortunately had worse. And to think that I was actually looking forward to trying this place in my quest to find the best Chinese food in town.... My first impression of Mei Mei was the complete lack of ambience or atmosphere. Non descript tables spread amongst blank brightly lit walls. The restaurant is clean and well kept. The seating is comfortable. The waitress was friendly but definitely did not have a command of English. The menu offered the normal selection of Mandarin / Cantonese fare traditionally found in American Chinese restaurants. There is a $7 lunch special that includes your choice from approximately 20 dishes along with egg rolls, egg flower soup, and choice of either white or fried rice or lo mein. I ordered a la carte - a small hot & sour soup and moo shu pork. My wife ordered the lunch special of orange chicken with lo mein. The soups were quickly brought out to our table. From first glimpse something just looked off about the hot & sour soup. Instead of the rich reddish brown color I'm used to this soup was nearly clear. Now, I like this soup on the sour side and often have to ask for some extra vinegar but this tasted more like lemon juice soup. It had no texture or mouth feel. Basically it was a cup or hot sour water. My wife didn't finish her egg flower soup either. A few minutes later our main dishes were brought out. Again, something just looked a little off about the moo shu pork. I asked the waitress for some white rice to go along with it and was told that would cost an additional $2.00. Talk about nickel and diming..... I've never been to a Chinese restaurant where I was charged extra for rice when ordering a la carte. Anyhow without the hoison sauce on the crepe the pork tasted as if were freezer burnt. I tasted some of my wife's orange chicken. Im not sure if the bits of chicken were precooked and used in all their dishes or cooked freshly for this dish. My feeling is that they were precooked. The orange sauce was just a generic sickly sweet syrup coating the pieces of chicken. The dish was devoid of anything resembling a vegetable. She said the lo mein was just gross so I declined a taste. Four stars????? How in tarnation did this place get four stars???? Sorry but I wont be going back.

Yelp
Omg ! This place is crazy good ! Pupu platter was the best I have ever had Friend has teriyaki beef excellent ! Orange chicken was killer ! Service was attentive , friendly and fast ! All food came out hot Definitely as good or better than the best restaurants in Chinatown San Francisco We will be back ! My fortune was For good health eat more Chinese food "
google avatar

Nellie H.

Yelp
Food is so delicious. The lo mein noodles are fat and savory. Sesame chicken is delicious and the portions of the protein in rice or noodles is very generous. Highly recommend.

C D.

Yelp
Just don't! Save yourself the money. This place is gross. Went for the $7.99 lunch special. Got the bbq pork fried rice with spring rolls. The spring rolls were not deep fried, they tasted like they were microwaved, and had an unpleasant taste. The friend rice was luke warm, and the bbq pork was as dry, and tough as beef jerky. Absolutely no flavoring or sauces for the bbq pork. I wish I could get a refund, but I just threw the food away.

Gabriel S.

Yelp
My go to place, never really busy but they deserve it, food was great and good priced. Orange chicken is the best!

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Love Mei Mei's‼It's our go to Chinese restaurant. Actually, we have.been going to Mei Mei's since 1997. Been to many others, but nome meet our expectations. Food is served pipping hot and drinks prepared cold. Beer is served in frozen mugs. Hosted and served by members of the same family.
google avatar

Jerry W.

Yelp
Mei Mei is another place that provides authentic Chinese food. It might not look fancy from outside but definitely worth a visit. They refurbished in July 2016, and the interior looks bright and modern. My favorite dishes are the roasted duck (very flavorful and crispy), and the fried pork chop (only on the Chinese menu :D). The only drawback is their location; it's on the west side of Tucson where is far from the main shopping area.
google avatar

J H.

Yelp
Good Chinese food on the west side. We found Mei Mei on Yelp after some of our other choices had been closed. We ordered the BBQ Pork Fried Rice: Very good flavor. Chicken with Sno

Janet K.

Yelp
Best chicken lo mien ever! I am from San Francisco and this is the best I have tried. Consistent every time!
google avatar

K H.

Yelp
GARBAGE! Do not waste your money. I picked up dinner after work hoping to get a great little meal seeing people had given such high praise. Ordered Kung Pao Chicken which should have been called Celery No Pao. No meat, heat or flavor. Sechwan Tofu was soggy little squares in a watery sauce- no heat or flavor. A side of pork wontons were greasy little balls - nasty. Sad to waste hard earned money on lousy food. NO STARS- should be the rating
google avatar

Monique Q.

Yelp
Family friendly place with an array of children seating items available. I have been coming for 30 years and never have been disappointed. Family owned and operated. No staff turnover. In recent years it has undergone a major remodel with an updated interior and bathrooms but I do feel it lost its Chinese authenticity you used to get upon entry. :-( Nonetheless, it is always a hit for an affordable lunch menu from 11am-3pm and equally affordable family dinner options ($10.99/person= soup, fried wontons, egg rolls and an entree per person). They are located in St Mary's Plaza (Safeway shoppinh center) so there is more than enough ample parking that is free and store front.

Yelp
To answer the question you're probably asking in your head: Yes! This place is good! Bonus: Every time I've placed an order it's always been ready in 10 mins. I know, I know! But I only gave them 3 stars! Let me explain. This place's "good dishes" are awesome! I highly recommend their Lo Mein and Crab Puffs. Their standard dishes like the beef broccoli and spicy beef are great. Their dishes are pretty flavorful, especially in comparison to similar restaurants nearby. However, some of their dishes are a bit unconventional. Their Kung Pao chicken is basically just chicken and celery. I noticed that it some dishes they tend to replace the traditional Chinese vegetables with celery. Not a big deal, but I love my vegetables and when I order Chinese I'm hoping for them. The ratio of vegetables to meat also tends to be very veggie heavy. But not enough to send me away, I guess! I've ordered takeout from this restaurant probably over 10 times now so clearly I like it! But it's still a 3-Star for me. :)

Pamela C.

Yelp
We yelped Mei Mei and this turned out to be a great place. Really a hidden gem. They get the extra star because they truly do have excellent customer service. The place is really clean and smells like food when you walk in. Very appealing to the senses. The food is delicious and a great value for what you get. The flavors really stood out to me from your ordinary chinese food plate. Somehow the same ol mongolian beef seemed superior in flavor and texture. Even the cuts of veggies in the food seem to be well thought out and carefully sliced, NOT all chunky and just thrown together. The egg drop soup was surprisingly satisfying. Trust me, I dont usually get it but they dont allow substitutions so I had no choice. It ended up being one of my favorite parts of the meal. Overall, my second visit here has got me thinking this is pretty much the spot for me now for chinese food in town (of course does not beat out P.f. Changs or something like that). Besides the weirdly underwelming egg rolls, this place is completely legit. Cant believe this place does not have more business. Probably the hidden location. Lets start some buzz people.
google avatar

Kenneth W.

Yelp
We started with egg rolls. Not good, doughy and cold in the middle. Asked for mustard, and got packets. This was not a great beginning. Then the main dishes came out, spicy seafood with onions and fried tofu with an incredible array of proteins and veggies. OMG, what great food. We will come back but skipping the egg rolls.
google avatar

Paige A.

Yelp
Solid and cheap Chinese food- hole in the wall-esque. :) Lunch specials are all around $7 and you receive 2 egg rolls, soup, and rice or lo mien with entrée. Can't beat it. Super standard and traditional Chinese food restaurant. Service is always over the top friendly.
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
Yum yum yum! I love this place so much, I eat here once a week on average. Love the Phoenix Dragon Special (chicken and shrimp with veggies in white sauce) and the crab puffs!! Friendly staff, good lunch specials too.

Adonis V.

Yelp
Honestly, some of the best Chinese food we have had. Great flavor and great staff. I'm a huge Chinese food fanatic and there is nothing like this in Phoenix. I would move to Tucson just for the food. Next time I'm in town I'll definitely have to come back!
google avatar

Cam M.

Yelp
Best place ever! Always fast, always taste fresh. Used to go a lot but since I moved to the east side, I don't go as much. The lunch specials are the best :) I always have to get food when I'm near the freeway
google avatar

Ames M.

Yelp
This was probably the worst Chinese food I've had in my life. The crab puffs had no crab and the cheese inside was cold, rice was undercooked and crunchy and tasted of soy sauce and not much else. The pepper beef just tasted of salt. The garlic chicken just tasted of boiled chicken. All the food was bland and flavorless--the dumplings literally tasted of nothing. Worst of all was it cost $50 for three of us to eat. Panda Express has more flavor and meat in its dishes and thats not even real Chinese food.
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
I have been going to this restaurant since I was little and I am in my 30s now. My family and I have always enjoyed their food and fast friendly service. This is not a place to just get orange chicken or the typical cliche Chinese food. Mei Mei offers such an extensive menu with many veggie options. I always get the fried bean curd meals or egg plant dish. I have always been satisfied.

Ruby C.

Yelp
I have tried for so long to like this place. The sisters are so sweet and nice I live in the area but the food is seriously not fresh and this last time it was so bad I threw it away. I know they have been there for years but man...it's bad.
