10 Tried-and-True Dive Bars for a Boozy Night Out in the East Bay | Eater SF

"This dive bar has been around since the 1940s before settling into its El Cerrito Plaza home in 1969, and it’s been a favorite after all these years. This is the place to go hang out with the locals, and its claim to fame is the popular karaoke night, which now happens four nights a week. If you’re feeling a bit shy, there are also five TVs to watch sports from if that’s more your style." - Dianne de Guzman

Been to Mel-O-Dee's a bunch of times over the years. Wonderful folks there to take care of you and the food is amazing! I'm a big fan of the broasted porkchops with white gravy. The coleslaw is epic! Eat some there and grab a pint to take home! Was there yesterday with 8 folks from the family and we had about everything on the menu from chicken, to liver and everything in-between and everyone came away full and happy! Brought home the leftover bread and made French toast with it this morning, the gift that keeps on giving! Love this place!

Although the interior was a little worn in some spots it was very comfortable and the staff was wonderfully inviting. We went there in the late morning for a late breakfast. Lots of great selections for breakfast. My friend had just a simple eggs and bacon which were cooked perfectly to order and I had their breakfast bowl consisting of scrambled eggs biscuits bacon hash browns and gravy. It was hearty and plenty to eat. I've got to get back and enjoy some of their lunch and dinner options.

This was our first visit, but we will definitely be back. My husband had the fish dinner with coleslaw and potato and I had the fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and bicolored corn. They also give you homemade sliced bread to go with your dinner. We have to say the coleslaw was the best we've ever had, and we are coleslaw snobs. The homemade bread was so good we bought a loaf to take home and made french toast with it the following day. It was amazing! They also offer daily specials

Our first time here. We loved it! We came in a group of 5. Our server, who was fairly new, was nervous about our group. We reassured him he was doing fine. Even though there were some hiccups, we tipped him extra. He definitely has the personality to be a server. The food was delicious, the prices are very reasonable. We will definitely be back!

Google
Very busy diner! It is so much larger on the inside than it looks on the outside. We were greeted with a smile & "welcome! How are you folks?" even thru the busyness of others being seated and people checking out.. Our waitress was very nice and we were served very quick. She brought us our drinks along with a bread basket of white and rye bread (homemade!😋). Our food was delicious! Served piping hot and portion sizes are plentiful. My daughter ordered her cheeseburger without bread/bun. We got the all-you-can-eat fish special. You will not leave here hungry! We will be back.☺

Google
A diner with a friendly staff and classic Midwest favorites for breakfast and dinner. The staff works well together helping each other refresh drinks and deliver meals. Locals fill the tables and are greeted with a smile to take your order. The food comes out hot and portions are generous.

We stopped in for dinner during our visit to Dayton. It seems they are always busy and this time is no exception. We had 6 people in our party, we didn't have to wait long and they got us seated very quickly. With 6 people in our party, we ordered a variety of meals. Fried Chicken is their specialty which was very delicious and cooked to perfection. All the other meals were also delicious. The place has plenty of seating with a great atmosphere. Our waitresses was awesome and very attentive and our food came out very quickly. We had a wonderful dining experience.

Yelp
Good old country cooking. Many home-made style choices! Very popular family owned restraunt, often very busy.

Cynthia M.

Yelp
The food is country, down-home cooking, and there is a lot of it: fresh-baked bread and excellent coleslaw. This is a Saturday night. We were served dinner at 8 p.m., and they started cleaning the floors and tables and putting the chairs up on the tables while we were eating. It felt rushed and very unwelcoming. Great food, disappointing atmosphere.

Lynn L.

Yelp
Terrible! Heard the owner talking badly about a server to another server. Then reprimanding that server in front of customers. Poor business ethic.

Becky M.

Yelp
Wonderful homemade food. Love the chicken. Service is also great. We always ask for the rye bread.

Yelp
Quickly seated on a late Sunday morning, but then waited for over 30 minutes for our food to be served. Go with the broaster chicken and cole slaw; both are good. I do not recommend the chicken and dumplings, which are served with 2 whole pieces of chicken on top of dumplings and (what appears to be) canned cream of chicken soup. Lastly, water glasses were not refilled.

Yelp
Food was great! Chicken is so tasty! Service was friendly and atmosphere was good too

Janet K.

Yelp
The food was average. Nothing special. The pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes & gravy was like any typical diner. The salad was lettuce with some grated carrots. My husband had the famous coleslaw, which was good, only because the dressing was sweet. They did have homemade sliced bread which was okay. I would rather have a roll. The 2 piece broasted chicken dinner (dark meat) was good, but the leg was very small. The server was good and the amount of time there was good. They were very busy for a Sunday evening. It was reasonably priced.
google avatar

Adora R.

Yelp
Food was outstanding! I had pot roast and red potatoes and my hubs had the New England boil. Homemade bread for 'sopping' and home made peach pie! Talk about an American meal at it's finest!
google avatar

Fred S.

Yelp
The food is great very large portions. The service is great. Lots of people working. Take care of your drinks. Homemade bread is awesome. Too easy to get into wheelchair accessible. Lots of people when we are there.

J A.

Yelp
Where to start??? It was pretty packed on a Friday night and I see why! But they moved through the list quickly and we didn't wait long. The service was quick and good. Didn't have to ask for my drink refills, which I love! The food! Everything our group had was so good! Due to time, here are the highlights. The homemade bread, yum! The coleslaw is the best I've ever had. Never thought I'd ever be praising coleslaw on Yelp, but here i am! The chicken was great! But the pies...I had to take half my meal home so that I could eat that huge piece of BUTTERSCOTCH PIE! It was crazy good! The other guys loved their coconut and banana cream pies, but they didn't know what they were missing because the butterscotch will change your life! Haha Loved this place! Hoping to get back there again before I leave town!

Yelp
I love their broasted chicken and broasted potatoes. They have the absolute best coleslaw too. If you love brosted chicken you should try this place.

Yelp
I came here on the invitation and suggestion of my youngest brother. We met up with his old elementary school friend for breakfast. They had many of your usual breakfast items. I was torn between the 2 egg breakfast and BLT$

Phyllis B.

Yelp
The Mel-O-Dee restaurant in New Carlisle has a relaxed atmosphere and home cooked food with decent prices. The best Swiss steak and broasted chicken anywhere. Homemade bread served with every meal and their cole slaw is known as the best anywhere. They serve all three meals daily.

G S.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant for the first time in 30 years. My husband and I used to go a lot in the 1980's. The food was good but I was disappointed in my carry out order. I ordered the 8 piece of chicken $19.99. The pieces were mostly wings and not much white meat. What upset me the most was the time it took to get the order and when I got it home it was overcooked to the point of almost burned. The waitress we had could have been a little friendlier. She would not listen to what you had to say and wanted to run off quick. My gd asked no ice in her drink she brought a drink with ice. I asked for 1 box she brought 2. We waited a long time at the table after we were finished and she finally came by and said oh your order will be at the check out. We waited 15 minutes and it was ordered at the same time as our meal. Service was not great.
google avatar

Emma N.

Yelp
The staff are always friendly and the food reminds me of home. Try the chicken pot pie
google avatar

Alisha G.

Yelp
Still the most delicious broasted chicken. Their broasted chicken is perfectly breaded and broasted to create the most crispy, juicy, delicious chicken. If you haven't tried it, you should! Also try their homemade white bread and their delicious cole slaw. Prices are reasonable, service is kind. Ambiance is old school diner.

Yelp
Love the Food it's SO Good. Service is very good too. But one down side is the atmosphere is kinda loud.

Dennis M.

Yelp
Meatloaf tasted bad when I told waitress about it she asked if I wanted something else I said yes after About 5 minutes manager came to table and said I would have to pay for both items I only had taken 1 bite from the first.i don't think that should have to pay for both when one was bad .IWONT BE BACK!!!

Hannah B.

Yelp
Completely unprofessional. Not only did I find a hair in the food (yuck)! I witnessed the manager be completely unprofessional with an employee. She was yelling at her and fired her in front of the entire restaurant. Not what I wanted to see while I'm eating my dinner. How dare that manager embarrass that young lady. I do not support this business no more!

Christine S.

Yelp
The whole area needs remodeled. Booths are old and uncomfortable. Food is very good especially the homemade chicken & noodles served only on Thursdays.
google avatar

Ron C.

Yelp
Love their bread, especially toated for breakfast. Had the Mel-O-Dee Ultimate Omelet. Which is three eggs with cheese, sausage, onions, green peppers, and tomatoes served toast or biscuits and your choice of sausage gravy, hash browns, fried apples, or sliced tomatoes. The egg part was thick enough to hold all the ingredients without it falling apart. Also had the broasted chicken is very flavorful. The wing are a little small. They sell their loaves of bread.
google avatar

Franchesca C.

Yelp
I went there to have lunch/ dinnner with a friend from out of town I am very judgey on meatloaf and let me tell ya. It was so good. The salad was good the mash was good. They have their own bread that they bake. I brought a loaf home! Thick!

Dave M.

Yelp
Walked in about 7:45pm. They sat me but never showed up. After about 10 minutes decided to leave and go to lees famous recipe which was a great choice. Sucky service at the mel-o-Dee restaurant.

Lindsay D.

Yelp
The food is like your Grandma's home cooking. Classic dishes with simple ingredients that are done right. Service is great. Atmosphere is light.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't let the outside of the establishment dissuade you from stopping into this place. Started in 1965 Mel-O-D is a diamond in the rough. First you may find a line at the door, understandable, because it is popular. The line moves fast. Not fancy with ordinary tables and chairs, minimal wall decorations and no table decorations. The menu is large with Broasted items the highlight of the meals. Either pork, chicken or fish the specialty of the place. The service is great the food homemade quality and the proces comparable with surrounding locations. Difference is in the quantity of food the abundance of bread and butter and the size of the drinks. I left this place with food to spare and a full stomach. Look this place up when in the Dayton, OH area.

M T.

Yelp
Great food and service. Ultimate omlette was the way to go with a full french toast upgrade. Got a strawberry pie to go. Would definitely come back!

Frances F.

Yelp
Food is usually very good especially their broasted chicken & fish. As cheap as fast food these day!!

Scott D.

Yelp
Overall food was overcooked. Broasted chicken breasts were very dry. French Fries were cold and hard. Dried out as if sitting under a warming light for hours. Macaroni and cheese was not good and dried out. Overall bad experience with food. Service was good but will not go back. Went with three other people and same comments.

Duane S.

Yelp
Decent food. Offering specials everyday and weekends. The broasted chicken is good and the coleslaw is delicious.
google avatar

Paul F.

Yelp
Their boasted chicken is the best but their boasted white fish is too salty and so crunchy it's hard. Their coleslaw used to be tender and sweet, but today it was just sweet and not tender at all. I will return because we have a good history. I hope it's just an off day for them.

Maureena M.

Yelp
Always good. Service friendly. Atmosphere pleasant. Go there often. My favorites are Melodee burger platter, broasted chicken and cod fish, Salad. It's like homecoming.

Tamala D.

Yelp
It was great place for breakfast! We tried it all, French toast, hash brown casserole, biscuits and gravy - it was so tasty. It is homey place with nice servers.

George H.

Yelp
Right out of the 1960's the Melodee has charm and above average service. The menu is excellent as well as the food. The Broasted Chicken and Coleslaw are great ! It's a No Frills family style restaurant especially for Seniors.

Alex R.

Yelp
Fresh food and good service and good place cuality services friendly personal prices is good
google avatar

Amber E.

Yelp
Yuck yuck and yuck chicken very dry, food very bland no flavor. I guess if I were 80 I might like it. Broaster Chicken dry dry no flavor.
google avatar

Renee W.

Yelp
Consistently good food. Consistently poor service if you're not a regular. I grew up in the area & crave the coleslaw & broasted chicken. Every time I come home & go to the restaurant, I leave full of delicious food but feeling relatively ignored. I'm sure I'll be back - it's a New Carlisle staple- but I sure wish for a little friendlier service.

Aimee G.

Yelp
Food was excellent- we ordered the standards: broasted chicken, pork chop, strip steak special, mashed potatoes, all were perfect. Slaw and bread are on point. Place was busy with early birds and hostess was quick to get us in to our comfy booth. No room for pie, sadly-next time! This place is a true blast from the past- they still play Muzak and it was all the way 70's hits. A gem of a place.
google avatar

Sue B.

Yelp
Great restaurant and famous for comfort food. I love the bread and beef stew plus the big breakfasts.

Nikki M.

Yelp
Nothing like going back to your hometown for some good homemade bread and the best comfort food. This place still taste the same as it did when I was kid. Never disappoints.
google avatar

Steve J.

Yelp
Great broasted chicken. Great service and well worth the short drive. I recommend everything on the menu.
google avatar

Angelie C.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and it's okay. The homemade bread is amazing though! The infamous coleslaw is too sweet for me but good. We ordered breakfast last time we were here and it was just ok. I got some kind of skillet thing that wasn't terrible but I found a big piece of plastic in it. They did offer to make it right and took it off the bill. I know stuff happens. Honestly, the food is just middle of the road for me. But, there are a lot of hometown people who would disagree so don't take my word for it, try it for yourself.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
I myself want disappointed, but the two parties I was with, I went for there broasted whitefish, the portions were fantastic, the coleslaw was fantastic as usual, the two other people ordered the burgers, they were dry and over cooked. My question to them why go somewhere that is known for their broasted food and get a burger. The reason I am giving it there starts is the staff person that waited on us, Teresa, she was not friendly, she never smiled, she never even welcomed us. If this was the first time with this waitress o wouldn't say anything cause you know there is a time when everyone had a bad day and I understand that. She wasn't any better this second time. Other than that it's a great place for families to get together and have dinner together, I highly recommend it.

Isaac W.

Yelp
Arrived when the parking lot was empty just after opening. Waited 10min to be served coffee. Coffee was weak. Couldn't get ketchup delivered to the table. Coffee wasn't refilled. Numerous people weren't wearing masks, employees and guests. Eggs were cold. My check was $22 for two coffees, hot cakes, French toast, and eggs. Bottom line: come here if you don't care about your service. Don't want coffee, and want to over pay for mediocre food that I could have just made at home. I'm not coming back. I'll live a full life.

David L.

Yelp
Just a great, no-frills, diner with delicious food! Traveling for business, this was recommended from a store worker I was in. To my delight, it was so good! I had a chicken dinner. I ended up buying two extra loaves of the fresh made bread to take home. SO GOOD!

Scott N.

Yelp
Good food and good service, nice down home feel. Had the broasted chicken which came out quickly and it was hot, save room for dessert because they have a great selection of pie to choose from.

Ccvv V.

Yelp
Was very terrible, got treated yesterday and would not eat their again.

Sandy B.

Yelp
Best Broasted chicken this side of Amish country!! Awesome fresh baked loaves of bread, sliced thick and served with creamy butter. The chicken is so good - makes your tongue wanna slap your face! Try it and see.
google avatar

Dominic D.

Yelp
Small town cafe with what appears to be a cult following. The place is nice size but super busy during the after church lunch rush. The wait wasn't bad, the parking a slight challenge. The fresh bread is a great start to the meal. Definitely reminds me of being a kid at grandma's Ordered the 2 pc mix with fried apples and "world famous" Cole slaw. I wasn't impressed with the slaw. It was to wet for my taste and the sloppiness detracted from the appearance. Personally, a little bit of fresh black pepper would be a nice complementary flavor. The chicken was good. Just enough crispness and salt. I can see how if this was served poorly that the grease could detract. The chicken and dumplings was ok. The chicken was served on the bone covered in sauce. The chicken was as good as the broasted. The dumplings were really good. There is definitely a German flair as it reminds me more of spaetzle than dumplings. The broasted pork chop was good. The pork had good flavor but I disliked the sauce as it felt mass produced and huntz like.
google avatar

Angel D.

Yelp
Places a little rundown but the food is really good home style. Coleslaw is awesome, homemade bread is to die for.
