The 13 Best Restaurants In The Medical Center - Houston - The Infatuation

"There’s never a wrong time to stop by Mellow Manna for a casual Indian dinner or lunch buffet during the week. Bollywood music videos play from a TV, which happen to be an excellent accompaniment to scoops of tender lamb biryani. The menu here is pretty big, but the creamy butter chicken and naan are non-negotiables. Mellow Manna sets a gentle and relaxed vibe, but the spice here is serious, so be sure to tack a mango lassi onto your order as a fail-safe for burning tongues. " - Gianni Greene, Chelsea Thomas

Mellow Manna Review - Medical Center - Houston - The Infatuation

"At Mellow Manna, a cozy Indian restaurant in the Medical Center, the atmosphere all but requires you to take a load off and sink into any one of the rich and flavorful dishes. Sit at your table and watch Bollywood music videos playing from a flat screen TV in-between scoops of tender lamb biryani. The menu here is pretty big, but make sure the creamy butter chicken makes it to your table with some naan bread that’s basically a fluffy garlic pillow. The vibe at Mellow Manna is relaxed, but the spice here is serious, so you should order dishes at a heat level that’s a notch below what you think you can handle. Or, if you’re committed to having a meal that makes you sweat, be sure to tack on a mango lassi to your order as a fail-safe for your burning tongue. There’s never a wrong time to eat at Mellow Manna, so stop by for a casual dinner, or for a lunch buffet during the week. photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva Food Rundown photo credit: Liz Silva Lamb Biryani Few rice dishes excite us like the lamb biryani at Mellow Manna. The basmati rice is fluffy and spiced, and the smoky lamb that’s mixed in is incredibly tender. photo credit: Liz Silva Garlic Chicken The garlic chicken that arrives on your table is fried with a load of garlic, and coated in a sweet and spicy soy chili sauce. We’re not sure if the heat or the flavor makes our eyes water more, but we know that we can’t stop eating it. photo credit: Liz Silva Garlic Naan An order of naan bread at Mellow Manna comes with four pieces, but you should get extra because the delicate bread has many jobs as a scoop for paneer or a dunking agent for curry sauce. Or just to be eaten on its own. photo credit: Liz Silva Mango Lassi This cup of sunshine is thick, creamy, and damn near a necessity for giving your tongue a break from the slew of spices found in the dishes here." - Gianni Greene

Google
Where do I even start ? The food was AMAZING . When we first walked in we were instantly greeted and seated . We ordered the Butter Chicken (Spicy) , Garlic Chicken , and the Pamir cheese with Garlic naan and I must say all of the food was amazing! It was hot , fresh and delicious! This is somewhere I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to try something new , not only that service was fast and great !

Google
This food is so yummy we love the Manchurian cauliflower and the chicken tikka masala. The biryani has super flavorful large pieces of chicken and the samosas are huge. Hidden gem!! Great flavors and so fresh.

Google
Mellow Manna Indian Restaurant is INCREDIBLE! I love the food and drinks here. The service is so friendly! The place is small and the service is quick! I would highly recommend this place to my closest friends and family. Great job!

Merin Thazhathukunnel

Google
Authentic, cozy Indian spot with tasty food. The staff is very friendly, great prices, and really good portion sizes. Had the goat biriyani, butter chicken and naan and did not disappoint. The menu is extensive and wish I could’ve tried a little bit of everything. Will absolutely be back. Must try!

Google
Was in the area after the pool and was extremely hungry. As an east african i am no stranger to indian/ arabic cuisine such as masala, samosas, etc because we eat it and i also go to indian restaurants . When i came in no waiter came up to me i had to let them know when i was ready to order; no one interacted with me at all. I ordered the veg samosa, goat curry, and garlic naan. The goat curry was very extremely absolutely bland no flavor at all the only flavor was goat like there was no curry in that, no spice in it, and lack of seasonings. The garlic naan it wasn’t as bad as the curry but it doesn’t taste how garlic naan has tasted before. I can’t explain the taste. The samosas, i’ve had better but they were edible. I would definitely not return here i was even skeptical about it because of the location. Please save your money, i could made something at home.

Google
While in the area we accidentally stumbled on this gem of a restraunt. We ordered the chicken 65,and the chicken dum biriyani both were exceptionally good in terms of flavour, and portion size. Not to forget the cleanliness of this restaurant which is spot on. Would highly recommend this restaurant to all.

Google
Delicious and fresh food. We had curry chicken, lamb biryani and vegetable samosas. The restaurant AND bathroom was clean😉. Our service was great also making for a perfect weekday lunch.

Google
he wanted to pack the rest of my garlic naan, to go, behind scenes insisted when I resisted. I did not like that that is all plus the menus have no prices ON ANY OF THEM you can never know how much you are paying for your meal until it is time to pay. I hate that

Yelp
We were here at lunch with only 2 tables of total about 6 guests ahead of us and it took them forever to take order. I think one table waited for so long that they actually left. Then it took another long time to be served a paneer masala and mutton madras. Honestly those can't be cook on request. They had too cook them ahead of time for the meat to be tender. So why it took 30min for us to wait for the food??? Who knows Definitely not a come back in my part especially seating in for dining.
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
Our son recommended this place because they do a lunch buffet. When we got there we found out they only do that on Friday. We looked at the menu and didn't see any prices. Skipped it and went to another place in the same strip center.

Yelp
The food is of so yummy. I'm totally hooked on the veggie Samosas!! Even though I've only had 1 young lady that seemed a bit off-put and not welcoming, everyone else has been amazing. The food and the really nice employees are why I told friends at work about this place. So of course we ended up ordering quite a few times, and will continue to do so.
google avatar

Farrah A.

Yelp
We've only ordered delivery -- but at least six times -- and Mellow Manna never disappoints. The veggie samosas with the hot, hot, hot chutney is a must! Butter chicken, chicken Tikka masala, saag paneer, shrimp paneer, naan... All in favor of 'em. And the prices are fair, portions are great... We actually need to dine there in person, come to think if it. Keep it up, Mellow Manna!

Yelp
They're pretty mellow here, you could say they're mild-Manna'd. I discovered a rather excellent Indian restaurant located in a neighbourhood that really doesn't have any or much Indian food at all, and I'm impressed. They're pretty generic and catering to not Indians but everyone else, but they also have good quality and decent prices and some pretty good food, especially considering this neighbourhood doesn't have almost any good Indian places.

Scott S.

Yelp
A decent Indian restaurant and one of the first places my wife and I ate when we moved to Houston. Food was fine (C)
google avatar

Pamela Z.

Yelp
Got takeout from here because it is near our home, and it was fine. Doesn't really compete with the food in Hillcroft neighborhood, but it's nearby and hits the spot when we want Indian and don't want to drive 45-60min round trip to get it. I've never had butter chicken quite this brightly colored before, which made me wonder what was added to make it so bright. Otherwise the food was decent. They seem to do a lot of takeout/doordash so recommend calling to find out what time your order will be ready. Also check to make sure you got everything because our order wasn't exactly right. Not clear if our dish came with regular naan and they forgot our extra side order of garlic naan, OR if they just gave us the wrong kind of naan ‍
google avatar

Holly H.

Yelp
This is my go to for Indian takeout since it's pretty close to my house. The food is always good! I usually get the saag paneer and the garlic naan is a must. My sister had the chicken tikka masala wrap and she said it was good. A good place to go for a quick meal.

Yelp
Mellow Manna is a great option for low-key, affordable Indian takeout near the Medical Center. We ordered late on a weeknight and settled in with a delivery order of fantastic paneer tikka, dal makhani, gobi Manchurian, and naan. Everything was hot, delicious, and fresh and made for a perfect, comforting night in.
google avatar

Richard J.

Yelp
I've only been to Mellow Manna once, and I enjoyed the paneer biryani. I also had several different kinds of naan, which were fine though not particularly mind-blowing. The portion for the biryani was a great value. The restaurant itself is fine, although the shopping center itself is a bit on the sketchy side with random people hanging around the parking lot and sidewalk. Just park near the door, go straight in, and you'll be fine. I found the service to be friendly. Overall, I'd call this a 3-1/2 star experience.
google avatar

Tiff D.

Yelp
The best tikka masala I've found in Houston so far. Not a lot of chicken but it was only $13. Requested 4/5 spice and they delivered. Thick creamy sauce with good spice and it's not sweet. Fluffy and chewy garlic naan.
google avatar

Vinh N.

Yelp
Surprisingly the only takeout Indian restaurant serving the medical center, which is full of South Asian workers. I ordered two dishes for delivery and all I can say is that you don't get much bang for the buck. Both the palak paneer and aloo gobi were mostly sauce. They must love the blender there because everything was pureed. The food tasted okay but I was somewhat disturbed by the aloo gobi being mostly sauce with a couple of fragments of cauliflower and potatoes. Every other place I have eaten at has made this dish dryer. I would make the effort to go to Hillcroft..

Yelp
Decided to stop here tonight after a long day of work and so happy I did. Ordered Samosas and they were so so so good w/ 2 yummy sauces on the side!!! Fresh and fast! Tried the mango drink and liked it as well. The owners were so kind too. Will definitely be back again someday soon!!

Yelp
The facility isn't the best. It's not the best location. But the food was damn good. And every time I order the food, it's always on point. For that I'm giving it five stars.
google avatar

Uvie U.

Yelp
Let me start by saying it took ubereats 2 flipping hours to deliver. Everything that should have been hot was cold and what should have been cold was hot. Regardless though, I still gave the 3 stars because of the food. This place reaffirmed my decision to stick solely to Agas and Himalayas the next time I crave Indian. Here's the run down of what I got: 1. Mutton chetinadu 4/5. Great flavorful sauce. Skimped on the protein. Tiny amount of meat huge bones. It was insulting 2. Plain naan: 3/5. Nothing special. 3. Veggie samosa 4/5. Very tasty, crispy on the outside flavorful inside. They left out the sauces though. Hence the 4 stars. 4. Rasmalai 4.5/5: soooooo good. I had to refrigerate it for an hour but after that it was awesome. Best value for $ rasmalai I ever had. Just wished they added more pistachios. 5. Chilli chicken: 0/5. Warst chicken dish I have ever had in my life. It was like a McDonald's chicken nugget soaked in a sauce made from ketchup, Sriracha, And a sugar syrup. It truly was disgusting and I had no choice but to throw it in the trash. 6. Peshwari naan 5/5: sweet, flavorful, unusual. I loved this naan. Especially. Dipped in the Mutton chetinadu sauce. Overall, this place was so so. That Chilli chicken was so nasty though. I never toss entire dishes. But this was just too much. Final grade: C Never again.
google avatar

Lynn L.

Yelp
I ordered to-go food and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I had some butter chicken with garlic naan and everything was delicious. The service was friendly and polite and I only had to wait 15 minutes for my food to be ready. The environment was clean and tidy. I will go back if I have a craving for some Indian food.
google avatar

Tala A.

Yelp
5 stars to my favorites: butter chicken, samosas, lamb korma, lamb biryani!! Have had these delivered multiple times and they're always a win! The Indo-Chinese items I've tried and wouldn't repeat: gobi manchurian and the fried chicken. Also the daal makni came with kidney beans--not my taste. But, going back to the favorites--everything is tasty, fresh and not too spicy! The butter chicken's sauce is so yummy and while it could have more chicken, the flavor definitely makes up for it!!
google avatar

Sankit G.

Yelp
So, after ordering and thinking that was the best dal makhni I ever had in US, I wanted to check if they are consistent with their taste. Hence, I ordered dal makhni again the next week. It wasn't as awesome as last time but was better than many other places you would have had tried it. I ordered chole samosa and aloo paratha, I couldn't find aloo in the paratha but the samosa chat was quite good. You might find the chaat on specifier level, so you can add some dal makhni to it :) Though not consistent in taste I guess it won't hurt you to trust this place once. It won't be the worst experience for sure.

Alyssa Y.

Yelp
Being a first timer trying Indian food, I was a little nervous, but wow Mellow Mana made for a great first experience. My S.O. is obsessed with their butter chicken and has placed it in his top 3 favorite foods in Houston. I've tried numerous items from here and have not been disappointed. I find myself craving their Rasmalai (a cheese dessert) quite often. The prices are fair and the food is delicious. Will continue coming back for more.

Krystal J.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible! The food was bland! I asked for my money back several times and the guy kept saying just 5 more minutes. The wait was 45 mins long. I didn't even finish the food because a roach just started crawling on the wall! And the people that worked there acted like nothing was wrong! Never! Ever! EVER again! If I could give 0 stars I would!
google avatar

Jada C.

Yelp
I was craving Indian food, so I decided to stop somewhere close and get take-up. The customer service was good. The food came out pretty quick. I ordered the butter chicken, aloo gobi, rice with a couple of garlic naan's. My food was okay - just a bit bland in my opinion. Unfortunately, my garlic naan's were burnt and chewy. If I were to come back, I would definitely try something different, and I definitely wouldn't get the garlic naan again. I overall rate this place a 3 out of 5.
google avatar

Katherine Y.

Yelp
Was craving Indian food and wanted to support a small business, and this place did not disappoint! Food was delicious and came out warm and fresh and was very flavorful. Staff was very polite, attentive, and helpful when my friend and I were taking our time ordering. We ordered several dishes and sides and all of it was delicious and reasonably priced. Will definitely support this business again!

Yelp
I used to be the biggest fan of this restaurant when it was known as Chettinad. They had such great options at the lunch buffet with all the different curries and entrees. However, after the restaurant changed owners, I could definitely feel a drop in the quality of the food here. Mellow Manna has a very limited selection of curries for the lunch buffet. The entrees here such as the butter chicken are pretty bland and tasteless. The curries feel watered down, and inedible. Even the chicken tandoori leaves much to be desired. The only tasty item at the lunch buffet was the chicken nuggets. It actually felt and tasted exactly like the chicken nuggets from McDonald's. I wouldn't be surprised if the owners ran out of options, and just decided to get chicken nuggets to fill up the buffet line. Mellow Manna is a shell of its former self. The food quality had dropped drastically. I don't think I will be returning in the future to try it again. My most recent experience here was just too disappointing.

Yelp
Ate here for lunch today and had a decent time! When I walked in, I wasn't sure whether I was supposed to seat myself or wait for someone, so I just kind of walked up to the cashier and asked him. He told me I could seat myself, so great! Maybe I missed a sign or something, but if not, it'd probably be good to make the process more obvious. Anyway, after sitting down, I was provided water and a menu almost immediately, so that was great. I decided to get the chicken vindaloo for myself - it came with naan or rice, and I ended up choosing the naan. My food arrived soon after I ordered (long enough to make me believe that it was made to order, but not so long as to be frustrating!), and I dug in. The chicken vindaloo was decent - not the best I've ever had, but not bad. The naan was actually quite tasty and obviously paired well with the chicken. The staff did a decent job throughout the meal. The busser who filled up my water went strangely missing after I got my meal, which was unfortunate since the chicken vindaloo was a bit spicy and I could have used a refill. The cashier was definitely friendly (I think he also brought me my food!), but he was silently sitting across from me at the cash register for most of my meal, so that was a bit unnerving. Anyway, decent Indian food! Would maybe come back here if I was in the mood since I live quite close :)
google avatar

Cynthia J.

Yelp
I ordered my food to go. Restaurant is small but very clean. I am eating on my food that I ordered. I got the lamb biryani and naan bread. The lamb biryani came with cucumber raita. I ordered medium heat but should have just gotten hot. It wasn't spicy enough for me. The naan bread was freshly griddled, warm and pillowy. Portion sizes were great. Good meal!
google avatar

LifeIn T.

Yelp
First time coming to Mellow Manna; I was treated and given the respect as if I was an old friend by the host. And that made the food we had even better as it was already good to begin with. I order a desert for a friend that was retiring and it was something he has always had in India. Gulab Jamun... yeeeeessssss Everyone loved it as I did as he did. We also ordered Veg Samosa's which everyone like also. I am a fan of Indian and this place was a great place to indulge in my interest of its food. I will be coming back.
google avatar

Taryn Y.

Yelp
This is my favorite Chicken Korma in Houston, so far. The sauce was thick (not watery at all) and not too nutty. I thought the Garlic Naan could use a bit more salt or garlic salt. Will definitely order from here again.
google avatar

Brooke T.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I live so close to their store and we just found out about this place! We ordered the butter chicken and the chicken tikka masala and it was delicious. We also got the garlic naan instead of the normal and just all around so flavorful! Excited to eat at this place more.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
I've only tried the samosas and mutton curry here, but they were both phenomenal. Some of the most well-stuffed samosas I've ever eaten! Loved the freshness of the chutneys, too. The mutton curry was delicious, but somehow even the rice that came with it was just as good the next day! I picked up through uber eats, and the staff was super kind. Wish I had ordered more!
google avatar

Jonathan D.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been looking for new Indian restaurants because our local one is now boring. We used Door Dash to order from Mellow Manna and we will be return customers. Even outside of using Door Dash. Perfect everything! I ordered the Chicken Tikka Saag and this spinach sauce they used the right amount of creamy and the texture is so smooth. The Peshwari Naan was my ultimate favorite out of the Garlic and this one. It had a nice, sweet subtle taste that paired very well when dipped in the tamarind sauce. Loved every portion of this meal!

Chance E.

Yelp
This is a perfect Indian restaurant for the NRG area. I love their food I have to say I get it at least once a week. It's reasonably priced and super tasty. There is only one complaint. Their quality control is fairly poor. You are never guaranteed to have the same thing twice. I have asked for my dishes to be spicy and get them mild and asked for them medium and get them spicy. That's truly the only problem I have I just wish that I would be able to have the same spice level every time.
google avatar

Judy E.

Yelp
I had eaten hear when it was Chettand and it was very good back then. We tried it again today for a buffet lunch. It was was a very relaxing atmosphere and the wait staff were friendly and helpful. I chose the coconut rice, naam, along butter chicken, curried goat, a curried vegetable dish and a couple pieces of fish to start. Oh my goodness. It was extremely flavorful without being so spicy that you can't taste anything. If you want something extremely spicy I'm certain they would make it for you, but for this experience I was delighted with just delicious. I plan on going back and trying some dishes off there regular menu. They seem to have a lot of great choices. Unlike some earlier reviewers, the food was not bland nor was it tough at all. I look forward to returning soon.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Just don't. The food here used to be ok, not great. The last two times I ordered here, the food was simply inedible. About two months ago, I ordered the chicken vindaloo. The curry sauce that it came in was unbelievably sour -- absolutely horrendous. Today, I ordered the butter chicken, which I had consistently good experiences in the past. Not so this time. I had many pieces of chicken where the inside was RAW. See the photo below. Even though there only seems to be a small pink strip in the middle, you can tell immediately because the texture is wrong. I'm never going back again. Avoid this place.
google avatar

Sachin S.

Yelp
I don't recommend this place who wants a good food, all the items were taste less and not cooked well. I would have given zero stars but there is no option.
google avatar

Steph O.

Yelp
This spot is so...Awesome!! The serving sizes are crazy huge, especially when taking it to go. They're super clean, AND they have strict social distancing rules. All around great place.
google avatar

Bianca W.

Yelp
Omg so good and the people are so nice and welcoming honestly the food is amazing but the people are better
google avatar

Kat M.

Yelp
LOVE this place. Only ordered from them twice so far but food is EXCELLENT! Plenty of meat in the dishes which is a nice change from other places in the city. Pricing is fair also. Will definitely be our go to for Indian :)
google avatar

Franny L.

Yelp
Yum city! We were so happy to find this hidden gem near us. We ordered take out. The food was fresh and hot in twenty minutes. We ordered lamb biryani, chicken tandoori, and palak paneer. The lamb was tender and spicy. The chicken was succulent with fresh lemon and red onions. The palak paneer was a beautiful green color, made from fresh spinach. The paneer was firm and tasty. Wow.
google avatar

Vegetariano H.

Yelp
Wow! Someone's Indian mother works here and pours heart and soul into the food! We only tried this place because DoorDash gave a discount but it just became our #1 Indian Food Restaurant! Everything: the paneer tikka, the saag paneer, the samosas, and the gobi Manchurian has a perfectly blended array of smooth flavor. It reminded me of the quality of fancy expensive restaurants without the pomp or inflation. Just good food! They also respected our request to keep the dishes mild: full flavor without the phytocehmical burn. Thank you. We will be back!!
google avatar

Lorece S.

Yelp
This is the worst Indian food I have ever tasted. Those words, are words I never thought I'd utter. I've never actually had bad Indian before. Most have been varying degrees of good. This was almost inedible. Everything was bland and had an unpleasantly sweet taste. Nothing was spicy or even seasoned. Dishes were watery and did not contain enough of the ingredients. I have ordered here twice. The first time, the dishes were ok. Not great, but nothing of note. I was craving Indian and this is the only place nearby that delivered, so I ordered again. Big mistake. How can an Indian place not make Aloo Gobi and Tikka Masala? It's just unacceptable. Ignore the high ratings on other food delivery websites and skip this place.

Dazzial S.

Yelp
didn't look like much, and it turned out even worse. ordered 2 masala dosas and the sambhar was cold as we had to ask for them to reheat it. On top of that the menu specifically said $6.99 each masala dosa but charged us $7.99 because they didn't "update the menu"
google avatar

Misty H.

Yelp
Good prices and kind staff. 8.99 for navratan korma wth rice. Staff kind. Food as requested. Highly recommend
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
Bland tika masala and chicken was very tough. Their Spicy was mild. Their medium was flavorless. Good service, but bad food.

Marin T.

Yelp
Authentic, cozy Indian spot with really tasty food! The decor is very cute and they follow social distancing guidelines. Really great prices and good portion sizes. Had the goat biriyani, naan and butter chicken and did not disappoint! The menu is huge and I wish I could've had a taste of everything. Staff is very friendly and open to help with suggestions. Will absolutely be back. The best Indian food in the area! Must try.
google avatar

Sabali M.

Yelp
Ordered a pickup of mixed vegetable pakora, to get home and just have fried onions. I tried calling the numbers posted on the website and Google only to have someone tell me it's the wrong number. I think it's true because I've called in the past. Very disappointing experience.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Just before ordering, we looked out the window and an adorable puppy was walking by. Then the puppy pooped on the sidewalk in plain view. The poop remained for the duration of our meal. The omen was a solid metaphor for our dining experience. The servers were friendly and patient. They made recommendations and answered our questions with smiles. Then the foop came out. It was gross. We were hungry. We ate it. It was tolerable, but not delicious. With so many amazing Indian restaurants in town, we will never come back, but when there's an Indian restaurant five minutes from your house, you gotta give 'em a chance. With the five minutes they kept us waiting before acknowledging our presence, we could have made it over to Hillcroft. Next time we will!

Debbie R.

Yelp
I order from them quite frequently as I'm a bit addicted to the paneer masala. I will say they have forgotten items in my order on several occasions and it's not like my orders are complex since I'm only ordering for one.

Yelp
Was craving Indian food for lunch today and decided to give this spot a try since it's super close to the medical center. They use to be called Chettinad, but apparently they changed owners and are now called Mellow Manna. The sign for the plaza still says Chettinad but you're at the right place! They do a lunch buffet for $10.99 or you can order off the menu. The lunch buffet had chicken tikka masala, a goat curry, saag paneer, chicken tikka, two kinds of rice, butter naan, etc etc. Lots of options to choose from! I opted for my favorite - the tikka masala. It was good - not the best I've ever had but not horrible either. The sauce was creamy - there wasn't as much spice flavor to it but it was still good. I ate two plates of it on top of rice and dipped with naan. The chicken was on the dry side but it usually is in most of these dishes - there have been a few where the meat is braised in the curry and so tender - but this is not one of those places. Definitely a good selection, quick for lunch since the food is already made, and close to work. I would come back here for an Indian fix for lunch. If I had more time, I'd probably go elsewhere. But for the price - it's a good deal. The restaurant is clean with plenty of seating.

Yelp
Work in the medical center, eat her once a week if not more. Buffet has the usual staples, and all of it tastes great! Favorites on the lunch buffet are the naan, chicken tikka masala, veg kofta (all of their sauces are great BTW), tandoori chicken, chilli chicken, chicken 65, any of the rice varieties, and these are just my faves on the buffet mind you. Ordering a la carte sampler tonight for dinner, and will update review if I find any other hidden gems. Staff is super attentive and very friendly... Keep up the work, guys! Will continue to eat here as often as I can.
