Yelp
I like this Mellow Mushroom located in Brookhaven Station, next door to Hudson Grille and across the street from the Brookhaven/Oglethorpe MARTA station. This is an old-school and popular Atlanta-based pizza chain that's known for its satisfying pizzas and laid-back, colorful, and funky atmosphere. We had a good experience at this location which has been around for well over a decade.
This is one of the more spacious Mellow Mushrooms I've been in. With all the TVs in this place, it doubles as a sports bar and is a worthwhile alternative to Hudson Grille next door. Inside, there's a sizable bar and dining room, and a semi-open kitchen. Outside, they've got a fenced-in patio with both covered and uncovered portions and wrought-iron furniture. The covered portion has fans and TVs. The uncovered portion has umbrellas. We sat on the patio with a large group of about 20 and it worked out well.
Parking can sometimes get tight at this plaza, but you should have no problems finding a spot.
Pizzas are sold in three sizes: small (10 inches, 4 slices), medium (14 inches, 6 slices), and large (16 inches, 8 slices). During our visit, they ranged in price from roughly $10 for a build-your-own small with 1 topping to $26 for a large build-your-own or house specialty pie. They have about 10 specialty pies and over 40 toppings to choose from.
Aside from pizza, they offer apps like garlic cheese bread (about $5 per order), oven-roasted wings (6 varieties, 5 for $6.49, 10 for $10.49), salads (about $4-12 each), calzones (about $9-13 each), sandwiches, burgers, and wraps (about $8-11 each), and desserts like Frios Gourmet Pops, cookies, and brownies. The beer list is fairly extensive, with many beers on tap, plus several wines and cocktails.
Lunch specials are available Monday-Friday, 11am-2pm. There's live trivia, with prizes, every Wednesday night at 8pm.
My fiancee and I split a regular-sized chef salad ($8.99) and medium-sized Holy Shiitake Pie ($20.49). I also ordered a Bell's Oberon Ale (16 oz pour for $6). I enjoyed everything.
The chef salad was made with romaine and iceberg lettuce, shredded carrots, red cabbage, onions, cucumbers, green peppers, mushrooms, black olives, Roma tomatoes, mozzarella, provolone cheese, and ham. Mellow Mushroom has 6 all-natural salad dressings to choose from. We went with their signature Esperanza dressing because my fiancee really likes it. This was my first time having it. It was great. It was like a creamy, garlicky, herby dressing. The salad came in a tall bowl with each set of ingredients placed together in sections. We had to mix everything together. All of the ingredients were fresh and the quality was fine.
I highly recommend the Holy Shiitake Pie. It's the best pizza I've tried at any Mellow Mushroom location to date. The flavors were excellent. The pizza has an olive oil and garlic base, topped with roasted shiitake, button, and portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, and mozzarella and MontAmore cheeses, finished with a garlic aioli swirl and a spritz of black truffle oil, and garnished with fresh chives and shaved Parmesan. A couple of the staff raved about this pizza. Not only did it taste great, but it looked and smelled great too. When it hit our table, one of our tablemates said she'd be ordering this pizza the next time she goes to Mellow Mushroom.
One of our friends ordered the same pizza, but she got a small, personal size for herself. It did not come with as many mushrooms, ratio-wise, as our medium-sized pizza, so that may be something to keep in mind. The Holy Shiitake was very rich in umami flavor. My fiancee described it tasting almost like a "dessert pizza," but I wouldn't go that far because I associate dessert with sweet. When it comes to flavor, it definitely packs a punch though.
I enjoyed the Bell's Oberon Ale. I'm not a beer drinker. The menu said it's an American wheat ale from Comstock, Michigan (5.8% ABV) with a "refreshing blend of wheat and light fruit aromas, with citrusy and herbal hop notes."
Service was good. The staff we interacted with were nice, attentive enough, and we received our orders in a reasonable amount of time. I'd come back to this location.
