The 12 Best Things to Do in Natchez, Mississippi in 2025

"I found Melrose to represent the peak of Greek Revival design in Natchez — this 15,000-square-foot mansion from the 1840s still uses much of its original pre–Civil War furniture, passed down through successive owners. After serving as a venue for elaborate parties in the 1970s, it became a museum and historic site; it is listed on the National Register and as a National Historic Landmark and the house and grounds are now managed by the National Park Service. The park is open daily, while the house is open Wednesday–Sunday from 9am–4pm; admission is $11 USD." - Matthew Kepnes

Owned by the federal government run by the Park service. The employees working here are wonderful. I think the service is overly sensitive about the history of the home and its preservation. The lights are so dim inside the house that you can not see things as well as you ought to be the grounds are spectacular. The house is spectacular and again the employees who work there are wonderful.

Beautiful home with interesting history. Self guided tour on the first and second floors with volunteers throughout to add more stories and history of the people who lived there.

Great rangers that are really informative. Fascinating tour of one of the most intact antebellum mansions. Well preserved example of how wealthy people had no problem at all owning other humans.

Excellent restored and preserved plantation a short distance from downtown Natchez. Has excellent tours by NPS and well curated rooms and displays. Highly recommended!

2nd stop was the Melrose mansion built by the McMurran family in 1849 (completed) The parks Service was very fortunate to be able to purchase the home complete with furnishings. The guied tour is well worth the $11 price. Entry to the grounds itself is free.

We had such an informative and entertaining tour. Barney was our excellent guide. The cabins for slaves have a detailed bunch of informative posters. There are options to learn presented as QR codes at different outbuildings. Parking is easy, safe, off road. Tours are timed, starting at 10,11, and twice in afternoons. There is a clean restroom on site.

Very helpful rangers. Barney couldn't have been nicer. Knowledgeable and very willing to answer questions. Tour was led by Emily, a very capable ranger still learning her stuff as she was a fairly recent transfer. The house and grounds are very well kept. Enjoyable visit all around.
