First of all, I am not a cracklin' expert but, I know what I like. While on my honeymoon I asked around about where to get Boudin and cracklin's. Many directed me to the Interstate favorites like Don's Specialty Meats in Scott, LA. But then, while sitting at the bar at Fred's Lounge in Mamou, I happened to ask an old feller sitting next to me where he would go for cracklins' and without hesitation he said, "'bout halfway to Eunice there's a grocery on the right hand side of the road."
With that info in hand we (my wife of 14 days and I) headed south and found Mel's Quick Stop. Simply one of the best bits of advice I have had on the road. Mel's does their own smoking and it all depends on how adventurous you are as to what you decide to place in your stomach.
Their cracklins', are bacon-like in flavor and substance. That is if your bacon came in one inch cubes and had a subtle yet flavorful smoky flavor.
