The Best Hot Chocolates In London

"Why We Rate It: For its perfect balance between milk and dark To risk sounding like a Nigella Lawson M&S advert, this hot chocolate is intensely chocolatey. It’s not one for the casual drinker, but if you like the sound of a chocolate IV drip, you’ll like this. It’s smooth, thick, and richer than the inhabitants of the Notting Hill townhouses surrounding Melt Chocolates' shop. It’s made using 35% milk or 70% dark chocolate buttons which are melted into the milk. We like the milk one: on the venn diagram of chocolate it’s perfectly balanced, falling somewhere between sweet and rich. Ask for a small cup if you want to avoid an almighty sugar comedown later, and take it outside to savour on the charming courtyard table. " - rianne shlebak, sinead cranna

Melt Chocolates Review - Notting Hill - London - The Infatuation

"If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to step inside the kind of chocolate shop you see in rom-coms, go to Melt Chocolates in Notting Hill. Shelves are lined with elegant gift boxes and glossy, jewel-sized pralines wink at you from the counter. We’re big fans of the rich hot chocolate from the drinks bar. There’s no seating inside, but there is a charming courtyard table out front on the cobbles. Savour an intense, smooth hot chocolate out here and wait for your meet-cute moment to happen. I had a wonderful experience in chocolate making workshop. All the staff were lovely, and the instructor Paul was amazing. I made two blocks of Dubai chocolate to take home with me and also got a complimentary drinks. Enjoyed the workshop a lot!

Google
Had a very enjoyable workshop experience here learning about cocoa, chocolate and the whole process, as well as getting to make our own custom chocolate bars. The class leader was super friendly and knowledgeable, and the chocolate tasting at the end was great. A bit pricey but fun activity to do.

I needed a delivery of high end vegan chocolates for a friends birthday. I placed the order and then worked with the customer service representative to get it delivered that same day. The service was excellent but their vegan chocolates are exceptional! This is such a great place with incredible service. And their chocolates are divine.

Google
We had an incredible experience attending ‘Bean to bar’ workshop with chocolatier Paul! We were talked through all stages of cocoa until it becomes a ready product, sampled multiple varieties of chocolates and got to make and take home our very own chocolate bars. It was fun and engaging experience! Highly recommended for chocolate fans or anyone interested in food.

Google
Wonderful experience making chocolate! Learnt about the origin of chocolate and tasted different types/ percentages. Make chocolate bars with unique toppings. 100% recommend!

Google
Had an amazing Sunday afternoon at the master class. Paul was an excellent host, very informative and knowledgeable. Tried plenty of chocolates from various countries and received the information to go with it. Highly recommended.

Google
Excellent immersive class with Paul - great fun, lots to learn about chocolate, sourcing good chocolate, and made some delicious pralines, bon bons and bars. 3 hour class lasted 3.5 hours and was properly « hands on ». Pity that’s the masterclass…I would like to learn more! Just 4 in the class which was a great size. Thank you. This was a super Xmas gift from my son and his partner. Jenny

I had a lovely time at 3hrs chocolate making master class with Paul today. The class was incredibly informative, fun and friendly. My family was very impressed with what I brought back. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Excellent chocolate shop- it smells amazing inside! The customer service is excellent as well! You can purchase a box or a few pieces, I ended up getting two 26 piece boxes (the smallest ones they had and I believe it's 26 or maybe it's 16 pieces haha I don't remember); along with that I got two pieces to treat myself, and a bar of vegan chocolate for a friend. The ones I tried are delicious! Will absolutely be back and recommend this spot to others. So excited to gift a box to my S/O and family!

Yelp
Lovely chocolate shop in Notting Hill ! I like to pop in for a hot chocolate on a cold day after wandering around portobello market. We walked in one day when their cafe space had been reserved for a private event and the staff was very kind and accommodating, clearing up the little nook by the window for us to sit and enjoy our drinks. It's a fun visit, made even better by the nice staff and great music they play. Needless to say the hot chocolate in wonderful!

Yelp
This is a chocolate shop to hunt down! Amazing selection of flavours - all good quality. The service on Saturday was a little lacking - they weren't rude but weren't friendly. The chocolates are displayed beautifully and there is an area out the back where they hold chocolate making sessions (definitely for kids - not sure about adults?). There is also a little area at the front with chairs outside and a little throw in the window where you can sit with a hot drink (their coffee isn't great) and nibble some of their delicious chocolates. Really recommend their caramels at £1 a pop - sooo buttery and creamy! The chocolate flavoured one was delicious but they also have some fruity flavours that sounds good! At the moment they have lovely Easter chocolates - eggs wrapped it brightly coloured foil and bunnies, chicks and lambs in dark, milk & white. Perfect for spoiling a loved one over Easter.

Yelp
I needed a little pick me up and what better way than with chocolate. Melt was always a place I wanted to try since I have a massive sweet tooth and the chocolate here was supposed to be amazing. It definitely did not disappoint! As soon as you walk into the shop it smells of amazing chocolate. There are so many options to choose from as well like slabs of chocolate of pretty little truffles and even brownies. I knew they also sold blocks of chocolate for making hot chocolate so naturally I bought some and of course some hot chocolate. I've got to say that I'm not normally a fan of buying hot chocolate because it tends to be very watery and thin in consistency. This was definitely not the case at Melt. The hot chocolate was nice a thick and creamy and SO chocolatey! I definitely recommend the trek no matter how far you live.

Yelp
If the sweet heady smell of melted chocolate permeating the air doesn't drive you purchase at least one truffle, doesn't bring to the brink of compulsion to buy one shiny bon bon to squelch your sudden undeniable yearning for one satisfying mouthful of rich cocoa-based ambrosia, well, you have more will power than I would even *want* to have when it comes to sweets. The real trick of melt is that they make their chocolate on the premises... just at the back, where you can easily get a glimpse of the tempering process... and hear snippets about technique and what needs to be done next; while most chocolate shops supply only a one dimensional finished product, melt delivers a full sensory experience - and believe me, it's much better this way. The staff is wonderfully nice... darting back and forth between the tempering and the till... very cheery and relaxed sort of people... they seem genuinely happy... and well, it makes sense... they are living the life of mini Willy Wonkas. Now let's get down to business and talk about the main event... I mean, we're not just here to watch, and smell, and be charmed by merry sales staff... what about the chocolate? Oh my. Divine to 7th heaven degree. Everything I've ever tried has been amazing. Their chocolate caramels are exactly what they are supposed to be: mouthwateringly rich and buttery rounded out by earthy notes of chocolate. The pistachio marzipan is unreal...so delicate, but layered with intriguing textures and sweet and nutty flavours. And their salted caramel chocolate, without hesitation, is the best I have ever had of this trendy confection. Plus, they are constantly innovating and working with renowned chefs to develop even more interesting and scrumptious creations. I could go on, but suffice it to say, this could quite easily be the best chocolate shop in London - don't miss out!

Yelp
Good chocolate overall and some interesting flavors, but why soy lecithin on the ingredients list? No reason to have it in what is positioned as an ultra premium product. Talk to Theo Chocolate in Seattle to see how it's done :-)

Yelp
mmm... Expensive but heavenly. Got 3 chocs and my fav salt caramel chocolate bar for just over £8 today. The chocolate tasting (sorry scoffing) notes are as follow: Salt Caramel crunchie thing- crispy to taste kinda feiuittine- y in texture. No discernible caramel texture, but the salt and caramel tastes were definitely punching through. Salt defo strong and gooood. Regular crunchie thing- Texture like the Salt Caramel crunchie but nougaty and chocolately in taste. mmm. Peanut butter and raspberry truffle- Raspberry oozed into my mouth when I bit in with a well textured peanut butter. Crunchie bottom. Great texture and taste contrast. Peanut butter could be a bit more peanut buttery. Saving my chocolate bar for later. MMMMMM.

Yelp
The prettiest chocolate boutique I have visited. Melt is full of divine chocolate treats plus a warm hearted environment where staff is just so passionated with the products, that it catches! It was so fun to notice that the little "factory" is actually located in the back of the shop! There it was, and under my eyes I could see the skilled staff dipping and creating all those truffles. So hand made indeed! Already the smell is enough to make my mouth watering. They have also come up with really good new ideas, like the hot chocolate magical cup that comes with a pretty cup and a single chocolate block. Genius. Also new flavours with elderflower or apple. It is about time to take the chocolate art to new century and it doesn't get better than this.

Yelp
Good lord. The people who shop here are the people I try to avoid on a regular basis. Having said that, their bars are pretty tasty and unusual. Beautiful store with I believe a hot chocolate service.

Yelp
Chocolate Zen. A few steps in the door, and I surrendered to the delicious aroma of rich chocolate from the kitchen. I knew this was going to be good... The next thing I noticed as I made my way around the store was the simple, minimalist shapes and descriptions. There are no fancy frills to these chocolates - they have an organic look, in contrast to the more couture appearance of other luxury chocolates. You can clearly see the Japanese influences from head chocolatier Chikako Watanabe in these creations. I was there to buy a gift, so I only got myself 2 pieces for a personal indulgence: Sea Salted Caramel Bon Bon & Green Tea Truffle. I let each slowly melt in my mouth...wowww...chocolate zen! At the checkout, I was back to reality as I paid. A box of 10 assorted was £15. Probably up there as the most expensive chocolates I've bought, but so worth it. It's kinda like a chocolate version of 'fine dining'; it's not for everyday but I'll happily pay the price for the quality and taste of these unique creations and they make fabulous gifts. Oh, they also have a little spot in Selfridges on Oxford Circus among the other chocolate kiosks in the food area, which I've found convenient to pop over to buy a gift, but miss out on seeing and smelling the chocolate making.

Yelp
One of my favourite chocolatiers in London, no question about it. The sea salted caramels are simply amazing, better than award winning Paul Young's in my opinion. The decor of the shop is beautiful and the packaging is simple, clean and stylish. It's the kind of place in which you feel that the owners love what they do. I'm sure that the head chocolatier, Chikako Watanabe, apart from being exceptionally gifted in the art of tempering, must have some kind of superpower. I'm looking forward to go again and try the Pear tartin bar, that got Gold in The Academy of Chocolate Awards. I'm pretty sure they deserved it.

Yelp
Very clean hipsterish feel with white decor. The only color are the candy. I picked up some filler chocolates (chocolates filled with creams), not sure what they're called in England, however, in Canada we call them fillers or truffled fills. The lady looked at me confused, however, based on my description she knew that I was Canadian and took an immediate liking to us. I am drawn to anything on the citrus pallet, therefore, picked up some singles in the orange and lemon family to go. Decent prices.

Yelp
I want to live here. I want to get fat and live in a chocolate shop. Melt is amaaaaaaazing. It's the best chocolate shop I've ever been in. I spend a lot of time in chocolate shops.I'm not addicted, I think the chocs are really pretty, but I don't just have to look, I can eat them too. Brilliant. Last night, a happy group of Qypers toddled off to taste lots of chocs and watch them make tasty treats. I've never seen a group of people so excited and mesmerised by melting chocolate. And rightly so. Melt's chocolate is the best I've ever eaten. I've eaten a lot of it since I won the raffle at the Qype party! Yay! So instead of buying chocolate this time I picked up some caramels which is even yummier. I've eaten it all this morning The shop itself is very 'Notting Hill' - all whitewashed walls and prettiness. Usually I avoid this part of town, but the staff here are so lovely and they really care about what they do. That added with great chocolatey treats is worth the trip across town. I'll be back. Maybe even this afternoon to buy more peanut caramel.

Yelp
If chic chocolate is on your craving list, this is the perfect venue. As soon as you enter, your senses are assaulted - in the most enticing way - by the warm, enveloping aroma of the dark stuff (mixed with complementary notes from the milk and the white). If you're lucky enough to be part of a Melt chocolate soirée, you're in for a very special treat. You'll be led into the pristine chocolate kitchen and welcomed warmly by chief chocolate guru, Keith. Then the talking and the tasting begins Starting with the white stuff (not really chocolate at all but rather a sweet concoction contrived from cocoa butter) through milk to the dark, culminating in the stunning ganache and truffles. The mango and passion fruit ganache was awesome, extraordinary, sumptuous and the scent so sweetly intense I was tempted to rub it on rather than eat it (I restrained myself though). It's fascinating to learn of the provenance of the pod and its contents and to discover how national tastes vary and affect production. From sweet, creamy Swiss to more sophisticated French through blander Belgian, then on a virtual trip with Keith as he guides you through his recent cacao travels in Columbia. When the talking and tasting wraps, you can complete your 'fix' by exploring the alluring array of in-house-goodies and make the tough choice of what to take away with you. Instead of aloof assistants, the hands-on experience continues and it's up to you to serve yourself, on little trays, before your sweet selection is expertly wrapped in an elegant white box within a chocolate brown Melt bag.

Yelp
Wow. Melt isn't just another pretty shop in Notting Hill. Walk in the front door and you'll know that you're being given a chance to experience something special. Melt is chocolate heaven: a collision of taste and art that makes you realise that some luxuries are worth every penny. They make chocolates here by hand. Master-Chocolatier Keith Hurdman and his apprentices fashion all sorts of treats from several of the world's finest chocolates. None of the combinations are too far out since they believe that what grows together goes together, but this still permits them to develop tropical combinations of chocolate with mango, banana, chili, sesame, and lots more. There's as much attention to artistry as taste, and you'll find some elaborate creations in the elegant white-walled shop. You can often see them making the chocolates in their workspace at the back. They can also do private group bookings for corporate events, etc. Until I came here I didn't realise that chocolate was (nearly) as wonderful to watch as it is to eat. Ultimately, though, the taste of the chocolates I had here was as mind-blowing as any I've ever had. You'll never feel like having a Mars bar again.

Yelp
This sleek, stylish chocolate shop called Melt is a little jewel in Notting Hill and selling the best chocolates I have come across in London. The sea salt caramel truffle is my favourite flavour.

Yelp
absolutely divine! my friend and i got a sample of their caramels, walked down the street, took a bite of the sample, and walked back to the shop to buy a handful! they are the best tasting piece of candy i have ever, ever eaten! damn me for living thousands of miles away! melt, come to san francisco!

Yelp
Do you love chocolate? If you do, then we're so alike and I summon you, my fellow chocolate lover, to Melt. The place is a true heaven and you can smell the lovely scent just from the door. How dare they do that to me, I just can't resist going in when I pass by. The assortment is quite big and it would be impossible not to buy something. However, the buying part is what hurts the most as the prices are not exactly low. On the other hand, the quality is what makes Melt great and I don't regret any quid I've spent there.

Yelp
When you walk into this place you are greeted with an intense - and wonderful - aroma of chocolate. I have only had the opportunity to taste the truffles and hotel chocolate from here - but both were amazing. I wish I lived closer!

Velina L.

Yelp
3.5 stars. The first thing that struck me was the wonderfully rich aroma of chocolate that wafted to my nose when I walked in. I could just stand there and smell it all day. The front part of the store displays the different chocolates, including a wide variety of truffles and some chocolate bars, the back part is where they make them, which is probably where the delicious smells come from. I picked up a wooden plate and tongs and selected the truffles I wanted. Several of them were not labeled so I didn't know what the flavors were, but they looked good. They have some good flavors and do a good job balancing sweet/tart/salty, depending on the truffle, but my first impression was definitely how large they were. They could have probably been 2 decently sized truffles instead of 1 very large one, and I probably would have enjoyed them better. I think the perfect truffle is about 1.5 bites - a first small bite to savor it and get your first impression, and a second full bite to really enjoy it. Maybe in part due to the size, in part due to the actual appearance, these look more like homemade truffles rather than delicate, expensive ones, but the taste was still pretty good, with interesting flavors and many two-layer fillings. The texture of the couverture was just ok; it was missing the a good snap when you bite into it.

Yelp
Fabulous chocolate and gifts available at this shop, all chocolate is made on the premises and a must visit for chocoholics. Chocolate tasting is amazing and the chocolatiers are so knowledgeable, please note that you will have to book the tasting sessions or go with an organised group.

Yelp
This chocolate boutique has a French style interior decor, crisp and stylish. I like the self pick setting of choosing the chocolates you like. However in the summer don't miss their silky texture ice cream, must try. Yelp
I bought some of the hot chocolate stirring lollies as a gift and was gutted at giving them away! Looking forward to coming back here soon.

Yelp
Sleek and minimal design with an open plan aspect to chocolate making. I enjoyed the range and subtlety of flavours on offer at Melt. The seasalt discs are worth a trip to the store on their own, but I would also recommend the Melt Single Origin Bars or The Sea salted Caramel bar. The packaging isn't great in terms of gift giving but that should not put you off, as if it is for yourself, or for a friend, you will not be disappoint in terms of the taste.
