Memento Mori has been on my list since the owners bought my black couch last year, and today I finally made the drive out from Vancouver. What took me so long!? It was well worth the traffic both ways— a gorgeous day out with plenty of people enjoying the outdoor seating.
Parking is very tricky in this area, especially on nice days, but I lucked out on 24th Place (a dead end street off Vaughn). This was 11:40am on a Friday and the main streets were packed.
Since I don’t cross the river often these days, I splurged. I wasn’t a big fan of the Zinnia (tbf I wasn’t a fan of the last ube matcha drink I got elsewhere so that’s likely a “me” thing), but the Ishtar was SO good! Seriously one of the best matchas I’ve ever had! I should have just gotten that in a 16 ounce. There were quite a few different matchas I want to try in the future, like the Sea Witch and Mystic Rose. If it weren’t for my dietary constraints, I’d try every goth-a-chino flavor too!
The horchata skull was good, but nothing to write home about— I got it for the novelty and it paired well with my matchas. The Wednesday toast, on the other hand, was a stand-out! If this place was closer to me, I’d be going back regularly just for the Wednesday toast and a random matcha.
The aesthetic is really on point here. I’ve been to a few goth cafes around the country, but none with an open layout like this. It was perfect for the hot weather. Sadly no merch (yet), but I think it’s really cool that they sell art prints and a few other things from various vendors! It feels very community focused. The customer service was outstanding as well. They weren’t super packed, but decently busy, so it surprised me how fast my order came out.
The bathroom’s aesthetic was also great! They even have a baby changing table! They had water outside for the dogs as well. Thoughtful, charming, spooky goth cafe right here in Portland. The closest cafe to it I’ve seen aesthetically so far is Nocturnal in Monroe, MI, but their menu isn’t nearly as fun/themed.
As an added bonus, they’re only a 6 minute walk from The Freakybuttrue Peculiarium. Easy date idea!
