2 Days in Lisbon

"Provides one of the best views of the Tagus river. The hotel offers a good combination of natural beauty and contemporary design and architecture." - The MICHELIN Guide

"The first property in Lisbon’s Memmo chain of boutique hotels, Memmo Alfama set the tone when it opened in 2013, with 42 rooms outfitted in crisp, clean-lined furnishings and a neutral color scheme of warm whites and beiges. Like its sister property Memmo Príncipe Real, the terrace offers an eye-catcher of a pool—this one lined in red tiles inspired by the rooftops it overlooks—with sweeping views of the River Tagus. While there’s no real restaurant per se, breakfast is served on a communal table in the light-filled, ground floor “Living Room,” while an array of tapas (ham croquettes, sauteed shrimp) and heftier sandwiches (salmon burger with fennel, fillet steak in pão do caco bread) can be had at the outdoor wine bar. Just be sure you’ve got a babysitter on speed dial: the adults-only property is reserved for guests over the age of 16."

Memmo Alfama, Alfama, Lisbon, Portugal - Explore & Book

"Sprawling down the hillside between São Jorge Castle and the River Tagus, Alfama has experienced something of a renaissance in recent years. Lisbon’s oldest district (and one of the few to survive the 1755 earthquake virtually unscathed), it was left almost deserted as younger generations moved to more fashionable areas. But fast-forward to the present day and Alfama has been rediscovered, its old-world charms luring a cosmopolitan crowd. It was only a matter of time before a slick design hotel moved in, too.Hidden down a cobbled street lined with orange trees, the 42-room Memmo Alfama (younger sibling of the Algarve's Memmo Baleeira) is a minimalist reinvention of a 19th-century bakery. The façade has been carefully retained so that it blends seamlessly into the jumble of terracotta roofs and whitewashed buildings, and the only clue to its new incarnation is the striking mural by street artist Vihls which adorns one wall. But step inside and you’ll find a calming oasis of wood and stone, with modernist décor that perfectly complements the original features. Arne Jacobsen ‘Swan’ chairs are dotted around an airy lounge, and the old vaulted brick bread oven has been turned into a cosy reading room. But the real jewel in Memmo’s crown is the rooftop terrace, with its shimmering infinity pool, wine bar and jaw-dropping views. Highs Ideal for those seeking romance and sophistication, with an adults-only policy and seriously stylish design throughout The views from the roof terrace are some of Lisbon’s finestFree walking tours of Alfama with wonderfully passionate guides who point out hidden treasures around every cornerWarm staff and a laid-back vibe help you feel instantly at homeThe location: the rickety yellow Tram 28 stops a few steps away, providing direct access to downtown, and an abundance of trendy cafés and shops are close by Lows Rooms are small with showers only, but they feel light, modern and freshDinner is not available at the hotel, but they do serve excellent Portuguese tapas and bar snacks during the dayThe hotel is set on a cobbled back street so can be tricky to findService at breakfast and lunch can be slow; you may have to track down staff to order Views across the river are periodically obscured by cruise ships (usually gone by early evening)" - Sarah de Vere-Drummond

"You knew Lisbon was getting hip, but this is ridiculous. The lovingly restored 19th-century building that houses Memmo Alfama could hardly be more gorgeous, the neighborhood of Alfama itself is impossibly historic and atmospheric, and the interiors are warm, welcoming, and impeccably well-composed. And that’s before you even begin to take stock of the views from the uniquely situated hillside location." - Tablet Hotels

Google
This hotel and its staff are outstanding. We particularly loved Antonio and Monica, who served us breakfast each morning. EVERYONE who works here (from the front desk, to the servers, to the cleaners) is kind, welcoming, and eager to help. Breakfast is great. The location and view are wonderful. If we ever return to Lisbon, we will be staying here!

Such a nice spot. The hotel is located in the midst of all the chaos of Alfama, but set back on an alley that makes ensures a quieter, more peaceful evening. We had a terrace room and highly recommend it for easy access to a seating area right outside your room - loved popping out for a drink before or after dinner. I guess the room is small by American standards, but I've certainly stayed in smaller rooms in Europe - it was perfectly fine for 2 people. The pool was lightly used when we were there, but highly recommended to hang out in a bit. Breakfast options were good. Would stay again!

Google
We had a wonderful stay at Memmo Alfama. The atmosphere at the hotel is so calm and pleasant. Your pulse slows down, your shoulders drop and you find peace of mind when you sit on the beautiful terraces and enjoy the wonderful view of Alfama and the river with something good in your glass or when you eat the varied and delicious breakfast.||The hotel's terraces and interior appear luxurious with nice and thoughtful details. It's really funny that they have also decorated the old bakery ovens in the building.||The room we got had ok size and was clean and nice like the rest of the hotel.||The staff are very nice and service minded. Everyone with a smile on their face and with a calm and pleasant appearance that also contributes to the nice atmosphere.||Free morning yoga on the terrace on Friday with a lovely and very skilled instructor and free guided tour of Alfama every morning.||Thank you for a wonderful stay! If we are going to Lisbon again, we will definitely stay at Memmo Alfama.

Had a lovely 3 nights at Memmo Alfama, a fantastic hotel in the authentic area of Alfama. If you want a hotel with great facilities in the heart of the old town then this is the hotel for you. The staff were lovely and helpful and there is a lovely little pool on the terrace to cool down in after trudging up and down the hills of Lisbon. Lovely breakfast in the mornings although the coffee doesn’t keep warm in the filter jugs. I also did the free Yoga class at 8am in the mornings although which they do a few times over the week. Overall, a fab stay in a lovely hotel.

This is our last day. One more night to go of our 6-night stay. We have loved it here. Where to start? The exquisite conversion of the old building - every detail beautifully judged. The roof terraces (plural) including the one with the brick-red mosaic swimming pool, from which the jumbled Alfama stretches - half back drop, half patchwork carpet. The sweet young staff in their laid-back denim shirt/khaki trousers uniform. The great breakfast. The scrumptious food available on the terraces... I could go on. ||Totally recommended. ||One criticism. The breakfast coffee. Could definitely be better!

Google
We chose this hotel for its central location, rooftop bar and pool. The hotel is beautifully appointed, and the service professional. ||We were made welcome by Michel on arrival and breakfast was served by David Leonardo and Antonio. Sofia and Francisco were helpful to us on reception.||The location is perfect for exploring the key locations, and is close to the tram. It is close to the Se cathedral, the igreja de São Antônio and the Castelo São Jorge.||The room is kept clean and the linen is of a high quality.||The breakfast is ample with a wide choice including a la carte.

Excellent staff, super efficient and helpful. Rooftop areas and bar brilliant with great views. Restaurant excellent. Rooms beautiful. Have been to some hundreds of decent hotels and this was best by miles

Google
Had a fantastic stay at Memmo Alfama. Hotel was beautiful. Bar view was spectacular! Would definitely stay here again. Our only complaint was that the hotel entrance was down a side street- some Ubers wouldn’t come down BUT most did.

Yelp
Wow, what an experience! The view is incredible on this terrace. A full view of Lisbon from the red bridge on one side to another bridge in the distance on the other side. Stunning! And the tapas was also delicious as well. We ordered several dishes and shared them all. For my daughter, the churros were the star of her dinner! It's amazing, check it out!

Yelp
This terrace restaurant is inside a hotel and has a very nice view. The sautéed tuna was very tasty and the sautéed cod fish and shrimp was excellent. I would come again for both the view and food

Yelp
Walked in without reservation for their Fado night on Tuesday and they were so nice and accommodating. Rooftop terrace was beautiful and peaceful. Food and music was excellent!

Yelp
This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. Beautiful terrace with a pool overlooking Alfama, with a stunning view. The rooms are well-appointed and stylish. The breakfasts are incredible with a wide range of delicious and wholesome foods. Everything feels as if there's attention to detail. Friendly and accommodating staff too. I would love to come back soon.

Yelp
If my review seems like a 'fake engagement' or whatever is meant to describe events that never happened, I welcome a reader to look at the details associated with my stay there and ask, 'Does this seem to be a made up story?' It is not and I have the receipts and the photos to suggest I 'lived there' as presented. Funny how companies operate as all these people needed to do was to say that they appreciate my detailed descriptions and they're implementing some sort of quality control measures. If this hotel wants to claim that I am telling a lie or 'presenting untruths' I believe they need to sue me so we can meet in a court of law. I have no issues with the owner or management of this hotel nor am I engaged in this industry in any way whatsoever. I do not know the name of the owner although I believe someone told me a name about 8 years ago. I invited any reader here to read what I wrote about this hotel in the entry below. I like this hotel (a lot)! I even recommend it to friends and to family members. What I have written recalls my own unique encounter at one particular time period. Why avoid the maintenance that will need to be dealt with in the future? Why attack the messenger? Owner: Have you considered responding to these specific allegations?

Yelp
We had drinks on the upstairs terrace, the view was spectacular and the wine was terrific. Lovely spot and the service was spot on!

Yelp
This was such a wonderful little retreat/intro to Portugal! I actually found this hotel through the Hopper app, and knowing little except for what the reviews said, really don't think I could have made a better choice for my first major trip post COVID-shutdowns. Memmo was welcoming and comfortable from the moment I arrived. My flight from the states got in super early, and I arrived at 8am - where I was immediately greeted by the desk staff. Although official check in wasn't until 3pm, they stored my heavy bag and allowed me to take full advantage of the breakfast - coffee, juice, charcuterie, yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, and local pastries. Breakfast can be eaten inside the cozy dining area or out on the terrace with glorious views of the Tagus river. With medium aggressive sparrows. They were actually able to have my room for me (river view, private terrace) by 11am - and as the jet lag was making itself felt, it was lovely to take a shower and a nap. Located in the Alfama district, it's an easy walk to many of the main sites, or down to the Praca de Commercial to pick up tour buses and other kinds of travel. 10 minutes walk to the Sta Apoliana train station, maybe 15 minutes cab to the airport. Live Fado performances on Tuesday nights. Solid cocktails in the evening, and reasonably priced tapas (steer clear of the shrimp, though - fishy and grainy tasting). Sometimes a cruise ship pulls in and blocks the view from the terrace, but these are very minor issues and don't even warrant removing a star. I used the laundry service and it was efficient and reasonably priced - they probably took better care of my clothing than I did. Perfectly satisfied!

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the pictures online because they are lies! I just checked into a room that was suppose to have a king sized bed and it is two twins pushed together. The "terrace" is two chairs behind two other chairs in front of me. The room is right next to the bar so good luck sleeping! I asked to leave and they won't refund my money and claim there is no manager that I can talk to because they are all on vacatio

Yelp
What was once the site of a prominent bakery, now exists as Memmo Alfama, a posh boutique hotel located in the Alfama neighbourhood of Lisboa. The decor is inspiring. The staff, genuine and sincere... A very helpful lot. There was no shortage of warmth and hospitality. The hotel is nestled away on a hill that cannot be seen from the main road, so you'll need to be vigilant and keep an eye out for the [very small] sign. You'll eventually make a turn onto a very beautiful alley, paved with nice little bricks that will unleash the gates of hell upon your feet. So, wear sneakers--especially if you plan on visiting Saint George Castle (Castelo de São Jorge) soon thereafter. The decor is chic. And the shower is "FREAK". (And that's all that I'm going to say about that.) Oh, and the pillows! Each bed is set with two groups of three pillows: one small, one medium, and one large. Breakfast is hearty. Fresh milk, whole fruit. Bread. Freshly cut meatlets. Cutlets. Whatever. Cereal, granola, assorted seed that runs the gamut. Pumpkin, chia, and a bunch of other sh*t I don't eat, but probably should. This all takes place in a postmodern chic dining area replete with wood flooring, pre-1960s era appliances, and a view of the port. With post card-worthy views, a location most travellers will find central, and guest rooms built for the utmost level of comfort, Memmo Alfama both met and exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed our stay here, and would not hesitate to book another stay in the future.

Yelp
This is a BEAUTIFUL hotel. It was in walking distance from our Airbnb, but we all wished we had stayed here instead. To cope, we settled for drinks on the terrace at sunset. It was chilly, so they brought out plenty of blankets and turned on the heater. The view was incredible - a great way to take in the city we'd spent the day traipsing around. Definitely recommend stopping here for a glass of wine. Some of my group also went back for breakfast and said that it was a little pricey but delicious.

Yelp
This four star hotel gives a ten star experience. From the moment we walked in and Mirelle showed us around, we knew we had chosen the right hotel. She stored our bags while we walked around the town, and when we returned, they were waiting for us in our room. Everyone on their staff greeted us and made us feel welcome. The rooftop deck area has the best view of Alfama. We enjoyed drinks there every night, and Ali took good care of us. Breakfast every morning included a beautiful cold buffet and hot meals you could order. David and Monica made sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend this hotel; we will stay here again when we return to Lisbon.

Estamos feliz. 30SEP2017 The Terrace Bar has great views, tasty food and excellent service. Take the 28E and get off at the Limoeiro stop. They welcome the low lifes from the street who are not guests. A bottle of Horta Osorio Rosé for €19. A beautifully plated assortment of 3 hams and walnuts. + Super service from staff who know how to keep guests paying €200-400 per night. + Wi-Fi + Flatware, Cutipol made in Portugal + Cloth napkins €36

Yelp
This is an amazing perfect place for a vacation. Would describe it as a HEAVENLY experience and so so so good. JUST BOOK IT. Perfect service and made the honeymoon exquisite. A MUST if you are in the area

Yelp
The place is nice, quite, but food is bad. Price is high, quality is low, portions are very small.

Yelp
Imagine you've arrived at heaven, and they pull you aside to say you have been selected to go to a "special place" in heaven. And that place is the Memmo Alfama! Indeed special in many ways of uniqueness and comfort, I felt like I've been invited by God to a setting unlike any other boutique hotel in the Alfama area of Lisboa. It's truly a place where you simply want to hang out and know that life is good! Ah, the sunbathed roof deck felt like a king's private hideaway overlooking the Alfama red rooftops and the glistening sea of the Rio Tejo. And when you're ready to retire, your room feels so comforting in its details of artfulness. I may go back to Lisboa just to be in the Memmo Alfama once again...

Yelp
Stunning rooftop bar with magnificent views of the water and Alfama. Super friendly staff. Infinity pool, fireplace, plenty of seating inside and out, plus the wine was fabulous!
google avatar

Yelp
I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It is beautifully designed - minimal with neutral colors - and has a fantastic view from the terrace. The food served at the restaurant and at breakfast was delicious. It is in a fun part of the city and close to lots of great restaurants, views, sites, and more. I found the rooms to be a little small and was ready to go after the third night and I wasn't comfortable swimming in the pool because there were usually a lot of people eating on the terrace. If you aren't staying here, definitely visit for an afternoon drink on the terrace. The staff is friendly and helped us orient to the city.

Ravi R.

Yelp
This is a fabulous hotel with a stunning restaurant set on a rooftop terrace, the only one in the neighborhood. Staff are helpful and speak English for international travelers. If you come during the day there is a healthy sunshine. If you stay at the hotel, the breakfast is grand and includes gorgeous crepes. A wonderful experience!
google avatar

Yelp
Great view, but were not accommodating with tables - then were out of two drinks we tried to order. Finally ordered and brought the wrong drink - and were not apologetic.

Yelp
Phenomenal hotel. Staff was exceptionally warm, welcoming and accommodating. Among many other special touches, we had to leave early the following morning and they provided breakfast boxes before we left. Very clean and comfortable, delicious food, and one of the best views in all of Lisbon. I only wish we had more time here.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely love this hotel! Great staff and beautiful room. Roof top terrace with bar service. Lots of great food nearby. Free breakfast that was phenomenal! Can't say enough good things!

Yelp
This hotel is a gem! From the full service breakfast included in your room to the wine terrace outside. The customer service here is first class and all staff seem to know Lisbon and the surrounding towns well. We stayed here for 3 nights and loved it. Room #33 has the best view of the river from all windows. The neighborhood is very safe to walk around at all times of the night and people are friendly. The hotel stay includes a free walking tour of the Alfama neighborhood and would highly recommend it. The hotel is about 5 minutes from the main shopping district and all public trams and trains. We will be coming back here on our next trip to Lisbon.

Yelp
Rude, rude, rude. Stubborn, stubborn, stubborn, nasty, nasty, nasty. Nice views but not worth dealing with staff and all their ridiculous, restrictive, unnecessary rules

Mel A.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed in #42 January14 - 21, and had terrific experience. The staff was knowledgable, courteous, and attentive. The room was immaculate, tasteful and comfortable. The breakfast was fresh and delicious, from the custom crepes to omelets and many fruits. The hotel is located within walking distance to many of the historic attractions in the old city. We will be back.

Kali K.

Yelp
we had a great time at this hotel. they offered a free walking tour of the area which was fantastic. the breakfast was great and they made your meal fresh! The pool was too cold in January but i bet it is incredible in the summer, as is the roof top bar that is on ever list of bars to visit in the city! i even wrote about it on my travel blog (completely unsponsored) http://lovelaughexplore.com/memmo-alfama-lisbon/
