Memmo Baleeira, Near Sagres, Algarve, Portugal - Explore & Book

"The onetime Hotel Da Baleeira, constructed with clean lines in 1962, has become the striking Memmo Baleeira after an award-winning, Pop-Arty makeover. This is the first hotel venture for the young Memmo brand - an oasis of calm in a scenery of sheer cliffs and crashing waves, awash with light and ocean views. Interiors are airy and minimalist, with a sleek palette - white, brown, aqua blue - and a few designer pieces here and there (chairs by Tom Vac, lamps by Philippe Starck). The sphere is a recurring motif: spot it in ceilings, carpets, lights and sofas. There's a big lounge for wet days, with books, comfy chairs and a huge wall TV, and balconies and terraces for superb sunsets over dazzling seas. Rooms and suites are spotless, the best looking out over the waves. Children will love splashing around in the outdoor pool on the terrace below; adults can chill out in the massage area. Surfers have the windswept coast to discover; beachcombers have deserted sands. Steps lead down to the fishing harbour and sandy bay of Baleeira, and you can walk to the small shops and restaurants of Sagres. Highs Fabulous for crashing waves and sunsets (the hotel even has its own surf centre), and within walking distance of some of the least-spoiled beaches in Portugal A good option for family holidays, with interconnecting rooms, 1- and 2-bedroom suites, junior dive courses, an unsupervised kids' club and kids menusThere's a big pool with an ocean view, plus a little heated pool indoors Guests get complimentary use of the sauna and gym, and there are dozens of different treatments to choose from in the massage areaStaff have negotiated special offers at a range of nearby restaurants, so you can make the most of local cuisine Lows This is a large hotel (144 rooms) and has a slightly impersonal feel by i-escape standards - but its size means that availability is rarely a problemThe on-site restaurant lacks character, though we enjoyed the food when we last visitedThe beaches round here are windy, and the outdoor pool (unheated) never really warms up There have been recent reports of lacklustre serviceYou'll have to pay a refundable deposit for beach towels on arrival (they're refreshed every 3 days at no extra charge)" - Guy Hunter Watts

Memmo Baleeira (Sagres, Algarve) 7 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"From the outside the Algarve looks like a fairly homogeneous yacht-and-parasol affair. (Not that there’s much wrong with that.) But with hundreds of kilometers of coastline to offer, Portugal’s famed southern coast is far more diverse than a resort brochure might have you believe. Take Sagres, for example, Continental Europe’s southwestern extremity and one of the major seaports of the Age of Discovery. Given the spectacular, clifftop Atlantic views in one direction and the rugged beauty of Costa Vicentina Natural Park in the other, it’s clear that Memmo Baleeira chose the perfect vantage point from which to showcase the less-traveled side of the Algarve." - Tablet Hotels

This is a very nice resort at the very farthest west part of the Algarve. The resort itself is fantastic - our two-bedroom suite was enormous - two big rooms each with their own bathroom separated by a very large living room/dining area/ kitchen. Everything is modern, clean, and updated. The beds are extremely comfortable (with the exception of the pillows - cheap fiberfill - they did not have down/ feather pillows available either). My bedroom is on the corner of the hotel and looks out on the harbor on one view and has wall-to-wall glass wall/doors on the other spanning an equally long balcony. The service is top-notch and the restaurant is fantastic - I especially recommend their brick-oven pizzas. The outdoor pool is lovely with plenty of lounge chairs, a charming bar, and hedges, walls to keep the wind somewhat at bay. They have a small but uncrowded fitness center with a few machines and weights - I ran on the treadmill and did the elliptical (both of which were fine). The only downside is that it is quite far from the main attractions of the Algarve - an hour to Lagos, where the famous sea caves, cliffs, and beaches are. On the flip side, it isn’t nearly as crowded as the center of the Algarve. We went to the public beach in town (10-minute walk) and it was not at all crowded, vs the more central beaches, which were jammed. I recommend this resort as a lovely and very peaceful escape from the crowds of the central Algarve

Thoroughly enjoyed our three day visit to Baleeria and Sangres Portugal. I would describe the town as a quaint fishing village with a nice touch of modern amenities. The hotel is easy to find by car, and a nice drive from Faro or Lagos. Beautiful property is well maintained, our room 216 was very spacious with amazing sea views and morning sunrise. Breakfasts offer a variety of tasty options to begin your day. Definitely a highlight of our trip and highly recommended

Wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the town of Sagres. If you are looking to surf the freeride surfing school at the hotel is fantastic. If not, you won’t be disappointed to just hang at the pool and enjoy the view. Rooms are great and the shower pressure is top notch!

We stayed here in August and unfortunately it was the worst stay in our 2 weeks vacation in Algarve. Like some reviewers have written, the front desk staff were rude and not helpful. Especially the older woman who ignores guests and is rude when asked for help. The property itself is beautiful and in a good location. But it is a bit run down now and not a design hotel anymore. We found a few bee/wasp hives outside below the highest floor rooms! (See attached picture) We had a good experience with the Restaurant and bar staff. But you have to wait as service is slow both in taking orders and food to come. Breakfast was chaos and packed! People were rushing to grab seats and the staff were not helping and you had to grab someone to clean tables and set it up again. The front desk man was helpful and was trying his best but he was also overwhelmed. The hotel is let down by staff who are rude or not trained. The view is amazing outside and location is good. But inside not everything is maintained and showing wear and tear. I would not stay here again.

Stopped in Sagres on my road trip and booked a night at Memmo. This is truly a fantastic hotel. I loved the private parking for my motorcycle. The restaurant and breakfast was fabulous. And I very much appreciated the handwritten welcome card! I highly recommend this hotel in Sagres.

Just left this hotel — the grounds and amenities are wonderful, but I’m sad to dock stars for the disappointing hospitality. Some staff were great, so I can’t blame everyone. Unfortunately, I was greeted quite rudely by the front desk, and that attitude continued during several interactions. Our dinner waiter was fantastic, but for afternoon drinks the hostess was short with us, made us wait 20 minutes to take our order, and still wasn’t ready — we eventually had to find someone else for help. When you pay this much for a five-star experience, you at least expect warm, welcoming service. If it weren’t for that, I’d gladly return next year — but sadly, the rude treatment makes me hesitant to come back.

Google
What a wonderful place. Especially welcoming after a 60 km cycle ride when the wonderful reception staff even provided us with an upgraded room though all rooms are lovely with beautiful views across the cliffs and the harbour. The pool area is excellent and the food outstanding. Breakfasts are wonderful - pity about machine operated coffee though.

Yelp
Memmo Baleeira has both a restaurant & hotel. The hotel is well appointed, their receptionists are welcoming, friendly and above all at your service. The rooms were clean, linens were above grade, along with their towels. Their pillows were difficult; i.e., not comfortable, almost as if too big, at least for me. The room offers a way to make hot water, yet does not provide in room coffee, tea yes, no coffee. The grounds are beautiful with access to the beach. The beach access directly from the property needs improvement versus a sign stating 'use at your own risk' to go down to the beach. Moving on to the restaurant within the hotel, best to say needs improvement. For example, they offer a Cesar salad, which should really be re-named a chicken salad with Cesar dressing, yet re-naming it won't help much, as it's overall poorly done starting with their usage of iceberg lettuce to pre-fab sliced chicken. They offer tempura veggie appetizer, which came with only one type of veggie, possibly string beans. There was also a skewered chicken kebab, chicken wrapped in bacon, which was to come with grilled vegetables, fair. The hotel saving grace was their breakfast. Yet don't think you can take a cappuccino up to your room to wake your partner, nope,NOT allowed, no food may leave the dinning area. Buffet was grand. Lesson learned, eat breakfast at hotel, look elsewhere for lunch & dinner.

Yelp
Lovely hotel in the south west corner of Portugal. The room was basic, but it did us just fine. We made very good use of the clothesline kindly provided in the bathroom. The fridge was also put to good use. There was ample enough storage also. The bathroom was excellent, nicely decorated with lots of shelf space to put your bits and pieces on. It always surprises me when holiday accommodation over look shelf space. But not here in the Memmo Baleeira. Cleaning staff were excellent also, always leaving the room spotless and perfect whenever we wanted it serviced. Friendly too whenever you passed them in the corridor. The pool area is fantastic, one of the highlights. Getting to it early helps with nabbing a parasol and sun bed, but people always seem to be coming and going to, so if you wait a bit you will probably get a sun bed by the pool throughout the day. The view from the pool also gets a special mention. I don't think I would ever get bored of that view: the harbour, the sea and the blue blue sky. Wonderful And the little public beach at the bottom of the cliff, which you can get to from the hotel grounds via a steep set up steps is also worth checking out. Not many people staying at the hotel seemed to though as it was always relatively empty. Probably due to the steps taking some getting used to, they are a tad difficult so not for the meek. Next the breakfasts: wow, really impressive. And a great range on offer, so you don't get bored of the food by the end of you stay. It got very busy after 9am, so may be worth getting there early. There are a few downsides, mainly in the bar where the food was overpriced for what your get. I got a cous cous salad one lunchtime and I have to say I can make a much nicer one at home myself. This one was just bland, boring and tasteless. Our second and last lunch was by the pool. Our advice is go somewhere else for lunch. The other downside was the bar staff. We were more or less ignored one evening when we went in for some cocktails. We left cocktail-less. Baffling behaviour. But as I said, the poor food and bad service seemed to be confined to the bar. Overall a lovely stay here at Memmo Baleeira and a recommended hotel in the Sagres area.

Yelp
The food and the hotel was great. The restaurant had some amazing selections and accommodated allergy issues. If in Sagres, highly recommended.

Yelp
What a great spot. Very friendly staff, clean modern accommodations, good food/drinks and a beautiful view of the coastline. Get the breakfast included with your room. It's so good with a big selection.
