Portland Restaurants and Bars Where You Can See Live Music | Eater Portland
"Mendelssohn’s is unlike many live music bars in town, with an emphasis on classical over the more commonly spotted rock subgenres and DJs. Any given night may involve “Operaoke,” Oregon Symphony chairs, the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus, and clarinet duets, primarily focusing on local artists with some touring acts. Food options are relatively limited, though the composer-themed cocktails are a real draw." - Jenni Moore
Portland Beer Week Returns to Celebrate the City’s Craft Beer Culture - Eater Portland
"Mendelssohns, a classical music-centered cocktail bar with live classical music and opera karaoke nights, was named on the 18th edition of Esquire's Best Bars in America list." - Janey Wong
Portland’s New Bar, Restaurant, and Food Cart Openings - Eater Portland
"A classical music-themed bar featuring live chamber music and “operaoke” from Lisa Lipton, a direct descendant of the bar’s composer namesake, Felix Mendelssohn." - Eater Staff
This is a gem on the Mississippi Street expanse of eclectic shops, restaurants and bars. If you enjoy hand-crafted cocktails using the finest and freshest ingredients and served with a welcoming smile, this is not to be missed. Teeny, tiny bar with a corner stage 8 ft above that features classical music, and a surprising number of students and singers belting out their best opera pieces. The accompanist is on electric piano and there’s nothing he can’t sight read for them (except maybe Stravinsky? 😉) A unique experience and a very entertaining night, worth a stop.

Amazing vibe, excellent cocktails, top class service and above all lovely music!!! It’s one of the most romantic bars I’ve been to. The cozy small place and the kind barista take it to the next level!

Delightful little bar with live classical music, and cheeky cocktail names. The bartender got called away for different orders he forgot my friend’s snack. But we’ll forgive him bc we forgot we ordered it too. He did bring it out once he remembered. Think of it as the younger college age sibling of Rimsky-Korsacoffee House. They also have NA cocktails for my pal who doesn’t drink. We’ll be back for operaoke.

This is a really cool place, especially a little late at night, after dinner. Just a warm, relaxing place to listen to some great classical, both on the speakers but also live, and have good cocktails. Warm and intimate, those are the best words to describe it.

An incredibly wonderful and unique atmosphere that ranks among the best in Portland.
I wandered in with a small group and was blown away by the vibe as a musician played accordion and sang classical Russian songs. The cocktails were excellent and the bartender was friendly and welcoming as well.
If you’re looking for a special place to show out of town guests, a date spot, or just a place to unwind and sink into a cozy vibe, I can’t think of a better spot. This place is special and deserves to be sold out every evening.

Yelp
Stopped in after a delish dinner for a night cap or 2 with friends. This place is adorable! There is live music, although we missed it on this evening. It was recommended we follow their IG page for most up to date events. We were told Monday and Tuesday nights they have community opera performers that come by to sing! What! Can't wait to go back for that! They have a nice drink menu selection named after ... music and composers... super cute! They also have a light food menu. I can see spending more time hanging out!

Yelp
A whimsical take on spots to stop on Mississippi Ave, this bar boasts some cheeky titles for the drinks and classical music on the speakers. The seating is a bit tight for groups, as the long bar has mostly 2 top tables. There's lots of fun music nights, including "operaoke" where singers can perform the real oldies.. it's a fun night out if you're looking for something different.

Yelp
The greatest new bar on Mississippi, classy and quiet without being uptight or pretentious. The dinks are tasty, novel, and punch way above their price tag. Add the great classical music meets jazz-bar vibe. And you've the best bar in town.
