Okay, first off, not too many dining choices in Mendocino, especially at like 3pm. Most of the restaurants close after lunch and won't reopen until dinner hours. Didn't have much choice but to grab sandwiches.
That choice was not a bad one. It was a surprisingly good one that got me to come back another round the next day. They have your standard sandwiches with Turkey, pastrami, roast beef, etc. They also have bunch of seafood sandwiches. After all, it is a coastal spot, seafood is gonna be fresh. There was a short little line when we got there. They take your order through a small window, then just wait by the drive way for about 20 minutes until your order is ready. They showcase all of their snacks and beverages on a table in case if you need anything else as you pick up your food.
I tried their crab melt in Dutch crunch the first time here. Spectacular! I had no words besides "mmmmm MMMMMM mmmmm oooh so good!" They're pretty generous with the amount of crab, not so generous with the lettuce though, it's all good. I paid for a sandwich, not a salad. The whole sandwich was pretty filling. I wasn't able to eat dinner after chowing that sandwich at 4pm. Theres a little picnic area by the coast, its behind the museum/guest house. Public restroom is nearby too. So having a quick picnic out there is not an issue.
Second time around, I ordered their seafood stew and a rockfish sando with pesto. The soup was a tomato based broth filled with lots of fish and shellfish. The soup itself was quite filling already, it's a nice hearty meal if you go for the bowl, a good snack if you do the cup. The rockfish sandwich was very fresh, fish was flakey, the pesto complimented the fish quite well, didnt mask over it at all. But the sandwich didn't hold up as well as the crab melt. Not sure if its the fish itself or the pesto, the sandwich started falling apart much quicker. This one was best if finished entirely in one sitting. The sauce or the juice from the fish made the Dutch crunch into Dutch soggy. Definitely not the sandwich to eat while driving or even in a cramped space, it gets pretty messy.
If I'm in the area again, oh hell yes im coming back, but not going out of my way just to come get a sandwich.
