The Best Tacos in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Mendoza’s is the quintessential style of taqueria, the kind that’s towards the back of a tiendita. If you’re here during lunchtime, you’ll see the line when you walk in. Otherwise, just let whoever’s working the register know that you’d like some tacos. They’ll lead you past the butcher case and over to the guisados case, where you’ll make your selection from the five or six available stews. Mendoza’s is also a butcher shop, and there isn’t a printed menu — the guisados change daily, with wider variety than the usual taco truck hits. Sometimes there’s beef shank with purslane in salsa verde, sometimes there’s smoked pork chops with cactus stewed in morita chile. If the stars align, there will be goat birria. If it’s Saturday, there will definitely be barbacoa. And Mendoza’s tortillas are handmade onsite: fresh, pliable, redolent with corn aroma and flavor, the platonic ideal for tacos." - Mark DeJoy

A Guide to the Best Pan Dulce in Seattle - Eater Seattle

"Mendoza’s is ideal for enjoying pan dulce paired with coffee. Offerings include pan de muerto, orejas, and galletas grageas. Despite a smaller selection than La Plaza Latina, Mendoza’s appeals with its good vibes and friendly pricing. There’s no Wi-Fi password; customers are encouraged to converse." - Charlie Lahud-Zahner

Google
Incredible food! Fresh and with a unique flavor. Their chicharron is crazy!! You have to try guayaba water The place is really cozy, I will definitely come back.

Daniel H.

Google
The lengua was seasoned so beautifully! A great level of spice incorporated in the verde salsa, paired with the beans, rice and homemade tortillas it all made for a delicious meal. On the weekends they have more options that will be worth coming back to check out. Very kind service!

Google
Absolutely incredible selection of drinks, food, and amazing service as well! I got some fresh meat, chicharrón and a Pony Malta and it brought me back to my time in Latin America. This corner store is an absolute treasure and Aurora is lucky to have them.

Google
Very welcoming environment. The food service was excellent with attentive staff ready to help us out. It is also a Mexican store and you can purchase other items to go. The food was delicious and served in authentic traditional plates. Definitely would recommend and will be coming here again.

Google
Love this place. You can pick up your Mexican canned staples, bit of produce, but where they shine are the handmade tortilla options, marinated meats, drilled chiles, and don’t even get me started on the Saturday tacos!!! They also had menudo which was great but I found it to be pricey. Will definitely come back every Saturday 😅 I’ve been raving about this place to many friends… you’ll likely be spreading the word too.

Del Brummet

Google
I ordered 12 lbs of marinated carne asada meat and 80 corn tortillas to bring out to our family reunion. The food was all ready in the AM for pick up and I bought some ice to put around the meat to drive over the mountains. The meat turned out so tasty!

Gozaburo RoaNoa

Google
I love this little Mexican market. It has almost everything you need to make authentic dishes. Even has all your popular meats and candy! I come here for the Nopales and seasoning. They even have food ready to eat, too.

Deena Hassaballa

Google
I came here searching for dried hibiscus flower petals to make karkade/Agua de Jamaica and was happy they were well stocked. I also bought two containers of their fresh made pico de gallo and it was legit. The rest of my unintentional shopped items were surprisingly delicious and I am most definitely going to be back for all of the above and hopefully more. Thank You MMM for selling quality items in Seattle.

Nathan M.

Yelp
Tamales, chicharrones, conchas 5/5 Clean, friendly, large selection for the size Thank you for turning my frown upside down!

Yelp
Buddy of mine took me here to grab some tacos for lunch and do a little shopping. He's a regular here so he talked it up a bit. He's of Mexican descent so he validates the authenticity, and it seems so. Lots of products here look as If someone looking for Latin goods can't find it at the standard supermarkets, it's probably here. So yeah, Mendoza's is like part restaurant and part grocery. We kept it pretty simple and got a couple of carnitas tacos and I got a jumex nectar to go with it. The meats are about off the bone as you can get as I watched the lady slice off the cooked pork. The family who runs it were friendly, not just to my buddy but to other patrons that were in and out, so that was a good look. Before we left my buddy insisted, we get a bag of "Dorilocos" - a snack made with Doritos topped with vegetables, peanuts, gummy bears, chamoy, and hot sauce and probably other stuff. It was interesting to say the least. If you're bold or want to take a bet, get yourself a bag, they'll make it right there on the spot haha. Very shareable.

Yelp
Awesome local spot! I only found out about it because I picked up my ups package there. Very nice people, in a cute, decorated restaurant/store. Food was delicious and good price! I also got a tamarind and a mandarin jarritos!
google avatar

Yelp
Small grocery story with A LOT packed in to such a small place. Really only has two or three small aisles worth of goods plus a small produce section, meat case, and hot food area. Their salsa roja was delish but too spicy for our tummies if you know what I mean. Produce was good quality. I was most excited to find dried Guajillo peppers!!! Impossible to find elsewhere in seattle. Family owned and super nice people. Free parking in the back. Definitely worth checking out.
google avatar

Lawrence L.

Yelp
Somewhere between a 4 and 5. Closer to 4 because of the prices. You are getting homemade, fresh, and really good quality foods. I bought two salsa, the Roja and Verde. Both are good and spicy 4/5. Your level may vary; my fondness for spice is pretty high compared to most people. Like a lot of #shopsmall markets, it's a treasure hunt. Lots of great items, but they are squirreled away throughout the store. It gives you a reason to talk with the owners, who are happy to help and share some interesting stories. There is a good selection of carryout from the hot food counter. I didn't try any this time, and I will be back for the Chile Rellenos. The prices are a bit high for groceries but the fresh items keep me coming back.
google avatar

Annie V.

Yelp
Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one in the reviews who was caught off guard by the prices lol - and honestly I'd give this place 5 stars if their stuff was just a little cheaper. However, as a homesick cali girl looking for spices to make Al pastor marinade, this place made me soooo happy and feel like there was a piece of home in Seattle which is very lacking in good mexican food. I haven't tried many of their hot foods and their tamales were ok but mexican coke, chiles, and plenty of snacks were enough to make me smile inside. Their chiles also seemed way better and more fresh than the dried, dusty chiles in American markets- if the markets carried them. Would probably come back to stock on stuff if I needed ingredients to do more Mexican cooking. Even if the prices are a bit high. The people behind the counter were also nice and friendly even though I spoke English.
google avatar

Christopher N.

Yelp
Ordered the pork carnitas and was very excited for them but was very disappointed when they tasted super stale as well as them having a very bad cardboard taste. They're definitely frozen.
google avatar

Earnie G.

Yelp
I am going to have to return for some of the food, but the groceries are great. So much variety in a relatively small space. Clean. Helpful. The only reason I am taking off one star is the meat didn't look great. Big selection, but I question the quality and freshness. And that's too bad. With some improvement at the meat counter, this could easily be five stars.
google avatar

Ismael P.

Yelp
Quality and variety of products is good! But prices are high, and unfortunately none of the prices are visible to customers, you only find out when at the cashier and there is no receipt unless you ask for it, and even if you get a receipt there is no description of the items purchased. It just say "item 1" $X, item 2 $Y. Seems funny business!!!
google avatar

J P.

Yelp
This market has terrible food and terrible service. The food in the case looks rotton, no gloves when handling and the staff working there is unkind and unhelpful.
google avatar

Bryan R.

Yelp
The employee was rude didn't look at us and spoke in Spanish. Followed by speaking in English, "I guess I have to translate for you, What can I get you". The foul attitude has lost my business permanently. Went to another Mexican grocer in Phinney Ridge. A little communication effort but the customer service was awesome without attitude and not condescending.

Mary Ann C.

Yelp
Just good authentic food. Limited menu. Close to my home. And the people who run it are super friendly and provide excellent service.

Jean L.

Yelp
Wonderful little store and delicious hot food. But the best part is the exceptional service that the owner and his wife provided me. When my UPS package was rerouted there when the driver was unable to get into my building, called me personally to let me know that it had arrived. I was able to get my package before Christmas and also saved me the multiple trips as UPS stopped providing updates. They did not have to do this, but this showed how much they care about their customers. I am absolutely grateful.

Yelp
We went in for tamales, the cold ones that you can buy a dozen of and heat them up yourself. I've been very homesick and it had been hard to find them anywhere. When I read the reviews, we decided to go in since we were driving by the area. They were out, so I ended up getting 3 chicken and 3 rajas de chile, which were individually wrapped, hot and ready to each. My husband and I ate one of each and they were amazing. We left two for later, but TBH, I wish we hadn't. They did not heat up well at all and the masa got super hard, so we ended up tossing most of it. I also purchased a medium bag of corn husk, an order of Pozole, a small bag of powdered shrimp and a medium bag of eucalyptus leaves. I needed all these things because I wanted to try to make tamales and tortitas de camaron, so I didn't check on the price. (The eucalyptus is for a tea I drink when I have a cold.) My husband came in and asked to use the bathroom, to which the guy replied, "I don't know the code to get in." We had been driving for two hour and that was such a dumb excuse. We had our own idea why he didn't let my husband go in, but I won't get into that. Time to get rung up. Almost $61. I was a little bit stunned, but like I said, I needed/wanted these things. Hopefully I'll be able to make my own tamales, because although the were good, they were too expensive for me. everything was so overpriced. The service and the overpriced things would be cause for 3 stars, but those tamales were really good, so I'm giving them 4 stars. My husband also loved the pozole, packed with chicken. The store was clean, the service was decent although nothing special, and the parking on the side was helpful.

Edith B.

Yelp
Food was ok, got the some tamales mostly masa and carne con chile plate but it was more like mushrooms con chile. Probably wouldn't get the hot food again too expensive. They have a great selection of snacks and sauces. Service was great empty store very attentive and informative.

Yelp
My package was dropped off here from UPS so I was excited to check out their shop. I thought this place was really cool and looked forward to coming back. When I was getting my package, I'd not done this many times so I was confused how it works. The front lady had me sign something on her phone - I shrugged when she took it away because I wasn't sure if I should tap the bottom of the screen(I didn't see what it said on the prompt) Immediately after, the guy working at the front next to her imitated me, exaggeratedly as if I had been incredibly rude for shrugging as she took the phone back then proceeded to laugh at me. The woman awkwardly laughed with him and thanked me but I was so caught off guard by this that I just took my package and left. I really hope UPS doesn't send me here again if I miss a package.

Yelp
Based on my experience here I need to award five stars. I was out running errands and needed to buy plantains, so I thought Mendozas would be a good bet. I ordered food to pick up as well. As soon as I walked in, I saw a giant stack of plantains, so I knew I came to the right place. I ordered huaraches, two for $10. The huaraches are delicious masa "sandals" topped with beans, nopales and cheese. I could only eat one at it was delicious, I'll save the second for lunch tomorrow. I also got champurrado because it' was a rainy December day. This mercado is small but has a warm atmosphere, it has everything you need, from a wall of spices, cases of cheese and salsa, ceramic mugs and bowls, and yes, a mound of platanos by the register. I live nearby so I'll be coming here more often now that I've found this gem of deliciousness.

Vanessa M.

Yelp
This was my first time here. It was nice and small. They have a lot of Mexican candy options and what they say to be fresh produce. They have a range of Jarritos as well as other Latin drinks I didn't recognize. They have paletas as soon as you walk into the store. They also have a cerniceria that seems to be pretty popular. You can order food by walking to the back of the store. They had a sign above it, but it didn't look like a menu. When I asked the person working for a menu he pointed to everything in the display case while naming it off. There were no prices shown. I ended up getting a plate of carnitas with rice and beans. The carnitas were good, but there was too much buche for my taste. The beans and rice were delicious! The tortillas seemed like they had been reheated more than once; the edges were hard, kind of stale. The green salsa was spicy, but an acceptable spicy. I really liked their green salsa. I didn't taste the red salsa, just because I'm a green-salsa-kind-of-person. When we went to go pay we took out drinks because we weren't done with them. The person working there told us that we had to finish them and then we can out our bottles in the crate below the bottle opener. I'm not sure if it's because they want the deposit or what it may be, but we felt like we were being rushed to chug our drink. Overall, I would recommend it if you want to buy anything other than food. They also had cute signs everywhere that just made us laugh. In one way or another it made us feel at home.

Yelp
This place is fabulous, it's gem when it comes to Mexican food!!!! Your not going to find your simple Mexican food here, your going to get the real deal. First of all the taco meats here are not for amateurs!!! If you want that just go to Taco Bell or taco time. They have tacos de cabeza aka cow head, which are amazing, made fresh every Saturday!!. They got carnitas, and to me Mendoza's and one other spot in Lynnwood make the best carnitas. When you have carnitas is mix of different parts of the pig, and they just melt in your mouth. They also have menudo aka tripe soup! Which is why we drive from Kirkland to Seattle. The menudo here is un describable!!! It just has the right taste and you can tell it was made right. It's not super greasy, which lets me know that they take there time to clean it, and the broth is one of a kind. It's a must go if you love menudo. They also make their own tortillas which make a big difference, they are fabulous. They make so many other things from scratch, that you will be blown away! Give them a try. You won't be disappointed.

Tatiana L.

Yelp
Why are there no prices on the items or on the listed receipt? There should be prices to better inform the customers.
google avatar

Annie T.

Yelp
We came in to Mendoza's for the first time. I was excited to find they have amazing fresh tamales in the back. We got one of each kind: carnitas, chicken, and jalapeño/cheese. They were delicious and flavorful. The service was friendly and he mentioned a rotating menu that I'm excited to try again. Great selection of chilies, spices, and other goodies.
google avatar

Sierra W.

Yelp
I've been looking for a quality Mexican market with a wide variety of selection and this is it!! They have cases for queso and salsa, a carniceria, and a hot food selection. The staff is super friendly too :)

Zach J.

Yelp
Another homesick Mexican/SoCal person here. So so glad for the hospitality and fresh foods at Mendozas. Got a ton of Al Pastor and Carne for dinner with friends, and they were both super bomb! Pandulce is also top tier if you can find soft ones! 1000% recommend Mendozas, and supporting your local spots.
google avatar

Richard U.

Yelp
great little mexican tienda with mini restaurant in back! the restaurant food is mostly stews and such kept in food warmers like you would have in supermarket hot food areas. stufd tried pork ribs in mole sauce plate: not the chocolate mole but a nice savory curry like sauce. plate comes with spanish rice and beans, both were also very good carnitas (pulled pork): nice portion size! a tiny bit dry but i was there at the end of the night! would get again chiles rellenos: sort of my standby dish. tasty chicharron ( fried pork skins) got to get this with your meal! crunchy deliciousness! the seating area for eating is very no frills and has no tables. there are stools and a countertop area so you can sit and eat. i like how you just grab your own drinks from the grocery refrigerators! folks who worked there were really nice. menu changes a bit daily! get the sense this is more of a lunch spot and a lot of menu items were already gone by the time we got there around 630p. would get there earlier to make sure you get to try all the options!
google avatar

Jan S.

Yelp
It has a decent selection of key ingredients you need to get started but their prices are not displayed anywhere. Not great values and not particularly impressed with their quality. Was really hoping they were good.
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
This would be 3 stars if this restaurant were in Texas, but 4 stars for Seattle. I had the birria (like a Mexican beef stew), cabeza (cow's head tacos), and carnitas (basically Mexican pork confit). All of the tacos were delicious and authentic! The first two meats were flavorful and quite juicy. The salsas they have at the bar are all flavorful in their own right -- one tasted of smoked chipotles and the salsa roja had a nice kick to it. Only complaint was the portion size was fairly small, considering each taco was $2.80 before tax (the birria was especially skimpy, like 1/3 the meat portion of a normal taco in Texas). It seems the food had been sitting for awhile, but considering the place is a meat market cum grocery, understandable! I'll be back to buy some fresh meat and more tacos, perhaps earlier in the day.
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
Picked up dinner of rice & beans, with pork and lamb, and it was delicious! Great market with a hot food counter in the back.
google avatar

Al G.

Yelp
Truly a magical place! I bought some of their freshly made queso fresco, salsa verde, and flour tortillas last time I went (plus $60 worth of other yummy items) and was beyond pleased with the taste and quality. Great customer service, too. I'll be trying their menudo next. I moved to Seattle from Texas, where 'mercados' are a given. I've struggled to find a place close to home because I live in Lower Queen Anne, but this place knocks it out of the park. I'll be back!
google avatar

Zhixu S.

Yelp
The food is super super delicious, the owner is very friendly, we had four tacos: al pastor, chicharron, carnitas and buche, spicy chicken, all super tasty. The salsa verde is really fresh. Will definitely come back soon and try more of their authentic Mexican food!!!

Lucy L.

Yelp
First of All everything there is Over Price!, They don't put price or labels and when you ask for the price The guy (owner) gets mad because we ask. If they label their products we won't be asking!. Also, you ask for a receipt for items purchased and they the machine does not give its . They over charged you a few cents more I just don't trust them anymore. Over price store!

michelle g.

Yelp
You'll get treated like a friend in here. I love the warmth of the man behind the counter who is always so kind and energetic. He's happy to make suggestions or answer questions and especially great with my young kids. We came here this time for a pinata, which is the best quality one I've found compared to other places and party stores (this pinata is tough to crack!). We love exploring the food aisles and always find some great treasures! Would love to try the fresh food next.

Nancy P.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican food in the city! We always, always order the guisados (kind of like a plate lunch) which comes with a main, rice, beans, and tortillas. Their beans are TO DIE FOR and I've never had the same main twice but somehow they are all incredible. Highly, highly recommend.
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
Love love love this Mexican market! I love cooking Mexican, and Latin American food, so Mendoza's has all the ingredients my heart desires. They carry some vegetables, homemade tortillas, homemade salsas, different kinds of cheeses, whole and crushed peppers, and pan dulces. They also sell pre-marinated taco meat and well as having a little stand where they serve tacos. All really fair prices and the folks that work there are so sweet. Definitely my go to for Mexican cooking items. Worth checking out for sure!
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Love the tamales here the chicken and the chilies and cheese. They have lots of Mexican food staples like peppers, canned Hispanic brand foods, home made fresh pico, salsa green and fiery hot salsas. They also have a taco, tamale, Chicharron and other Hispanic soups like what looks like posole, and what I thought was menudo. They have lots going on here. Everything I have had so far is delicious!
google avatar

maria b.

Yelp
Love Mendoza's, I get all my dried chiles, hot sauce, pozole, mole and all my Colombian goodies. For anyone wondering where to get baked Colombian goods like buñuelos, empanadas, arepas and pan de bono (same as pan de queso), they carry these in the frozen section. Added bonus, Carlos is a sweetheart and will go out of his way to help you find or order whatever you need.
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
So bomb! The lunch plates are crazy good. Authentic af. Will be going again to try all their other cooked meats.
google avatar

Cassi K.

Yelp
Wonderful market! Has all the essentials and very friendly people working there I'll definitely be back for more tamarind candy
google avatar

Ki H.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious Chiles Rellenos. Hands down the best ones I've found this side of the border. That have Mexican sweet bread and almost any ingredient you might need for Mexican cooking. Check them out and support a fun local business.

L.A. H.

Yelp
Very good little grocery with quality ingredients, and what just may be the best tamales in town.
google avatar

Argelia G.

Yelp
The foos was kind "ok" because the rice was not well cooked and the meat had so much fat-oil! Also, I just bought 2 items and then I discovered than there were cheaper in fred meyer and safeway :/ I payed like two dollars more for each product u.u But I appreciate the variety of products :) they have some good mexican brands and staff is very nice

Fernie K.

Yelp
We love this place! We have visited a couple times to get salsa (and then we always end up getting a few more items too...), and it is the best salsa we have ever tasted. The chipotle salsa is especially unique and delicious. Then most recently we got their guava agua fresca, which was also amazing. The man behind the counter is also super nice and helpful!! We will definitely be back many more times.
google avatar

Timothy C.

Yelp
We've passed this place a bunch of times on our way to Jalapeno thinking they were just a Hispanic grocery store. I'm so glad we decided to go in this time. These tacos are out of this world. First, they are HUGE and they are extremely flavorful. There is an awesome self serve salsa bar as well. We split one taco and the chicken soup (which was also ginormous). We would go back in a heart beat.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
I'm not a huge review guy, but I do sit down and take the time when someone or someplace has gone out of their way to make an experience great and I literally just sat down at my computer as soon as I got home to write this. First off, my daughter and I walked in there (masks on during COVID times) and we were greeted with somebody behind the counter taking a Mendoza's branded mask out of plastic packaging and handing it to us. He saw that we already had a mask, but gave us a free one anyhow and we're happy to represent their brand around town! They had everything I was looking for to make Birria tacos where I was substituting beef for goat and serving with a side of consomme. And then when I told him what I was making, he told me to make them and then come back and try them there at the mercado when they make them every Saturday! So he was encouraging me to go ahead and make them myself with the ingredients from the mercado but to come back and try them and compare notes on another Saturday when their cafe makes them with true lamb and goat. The kindness and unassuming "above and beyond" made me want to go home immediately and write a positive review. If I can convince even just a single shopper to go there either for pantry/produce/meat items or to go get a prepared meal, I'll feel like I've at least given back something for the kindness they've shown us. We'll be back, no doubt!
google avatar

Jenn B.

Yelp
Ordered a carnitas plate and a Chile relleno. The carnitas were fantastic as well as the beans. However the rice was extremely garlicky. Generally the rice is the first thing to go on my plate but I left it. Also my relleno was stone cold. When I got ready to pay I told him that is was cold and thought he wouldn't charge me for it since we didn't eat it due to it being cold. On the contrary I paid 21$ for 1 carnitas plate, a cold Chile relleno I didn't consume, and a small coke. The only good things: carnitas, beans, and a clean tienda, but definitely not worth the money or the hype.
google avatar

Iryna B.

Yelp
Very ehhh mediocre. Not many products at all and definitely not many authentic ones . Very small and dusty and expensive which is crazy for what they sell. There is no really frozen foods and very few things besides snacks . So it's hard to even call it grocery or meat market more like a corner store with some meat cuts there . They also have no prices labeled and it's bizarre and you just have to guess . They do have home cooked Mexican fair available but again with little assortment. The customer service is great you do feel welcome
google avatar

Antonio S.

Yelp
Came in here a few weeks back and absolutely loved the service that Sonia provided my fiancé and I. Being Mexican and from Central WA, I know a good carniceria and what makes it authentic. This place has it all. From the meat to all the Mexican products this place reminded me of home. My fiancé and I were buying meat for a carne Asada and ended up buying a few pounds of arrachera which is thinly cut from skirt steak, also called a fajita cut. This cut is ideal for grilling. We also bought some Diesmillo, which is also thinly cut only this is from the chuck steak, a little tougher but perfect for grilling as well. All in all I can't wait to go back and get more meat. I also want to head back and try some of their hot foods.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
After work stop by Mendoza's for a pound of pre-marinated carne asada, corn tortillas, jalapeno, onion, tomato, avacado, cilantro, fresh Mexican sour cream and fresh salsa. Go home for a taco fiesta!
google avatar

Robb M.

Yelp
Great little mexican grocery store. Their homemade chorizo is really good. I regularly go there just to get the chorizo so I can make chorizo and eggs. The Al Pastor is pretty good too, and the owners are very friendly. While you are there, pick up some of the queso fresco. You won't be disappointed. And, their salsas are really good too.
google avatar

Jason F.

Yelp
I found this place on Yelp, as I was looking for some authentic Mexican food in the area. I think I found some very authentic food! But, not quite my taste. Nonetheless, great service, terrific pricing and some seating. I think you'll enjoy stopping here for some quick tacos.
google avatar

Pepe M.

Yelp
The tamales are delicious, amazing, and authentic. Customer service was excellent and there's a wide variety of Mexican products. I will definitely come back again.
