The Best Pizza Places in D.C. | Eater DC

"The cozy Neapolitan place in Brookland sources ingredients from the Campania region of Italy and boasts a crust that sets the bar for elasticity in D.C. The dough doubles as the bread for wood-fired panuozzo sandwiches full of Italian cured meats and fresh mayonnaise. It’s open for dine-in and takeout six days a week (closed Tuesdays). A second outpost in NoMa also offers a rectangular Roman-style pizza decorated edge to edge in toppings like bolognese sauce or salami and artichokes. A third location could be coming to Hyattsville, Maryland. Know before you go: Parking is better at the Brookland original" - Tierney Plumb

D.C.’s Restaurant World Reacts to an Earth-Shattering Election - Eater DC

"One of D.C.’s best pizza places, the Neapolitan sensation in Brookland and NoMa, caused a stir on X by congratulating the new President-elect Trump. The restaurant awkwardly clarified that “the same post would’ve gone out if VP Harris won last night,” noting it simply wants to put an Italian pizza oven in the White House." - Tierney Plumb

Located in NoMA area. Everything was fresh. Quinoa salad was good, a bit heavy on the dressing for my taste, but the individual elements and flavor does come through. I had the bolognase pizza. It's different for me, as I normally eat NY style, but this was a good pie. Only needed a quarter, and is enough for 2. I would come back to try the other food.

Google
Good, fast service. Good pizza. I got the spicy one and the spice was perfect. Not too much, not too little. Flavor was excellent. Location was great for me because I stayed at the hotel across the street.

Google
The pizza was average, and unfortunately, the gnocchi was cold and lacked flavor. The Alfredo sauce stood out as the highlight of the meal. Regrettably, the appetizer ended up being the best part of our experience. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet the server never inquired if we wanted anything to drink besides water or if we’d like to order dessert after our meal. Overall, it was an okay place, but the food felt overpriced, and the tip was included in the bill. This made the poor service less impactful, but it certainly didn’t enhance our experience.

Google
Tasty pizza and a cold beer is fantastic on a chilly day. Enjoyed the aroma of pizza even though it was pricey for me. Cold beef was refreshing while watching the traffic pass by. Pizza was very large so luckily we had yummy leftovers for a few days.

Google
It was excellent. 🤌 The Margherita was incredible: who knew that much flavor could be found in just four ingredients? The dough was tasty - soft but not soggy, charred in places but not overly burnt. Their San marzano tomatoes really shone and were complimented by the mozzarella. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the pizzas; I thought the portions were perfectly satisfactory. The place was clean, cozy, and the giant tiled pizza oven tended by smiling cooks chatting in Italian added that extra little touch. Overall a solid A+, I wish I lived nearby.

Google
There is some excellent pizza made here, but they seem to be skimping on ingredients. Check to see if advertised ingredients are included before accepting your pizza. Details: Husband had lunch here in April 2025 and brought home Margherita slices and a Roman pesto pie. The Margherita had almost no tomato or basil, which was disappointing (good cheese and crust, though!) The Roman pesto pizza was outstanding, but didn’t match the menu description — if the advertised chicken was included, I couldn’t find it. That said, the light, flaky crust, pesto, cheese and walnuts were superlative.

Google
Great Detroit style pizza! Very tasty and had a nice drink menu as well to compliment it. Didn't get any desserts but had quite a few options to choose for. A little on the pricey side for pizza but definitely worth it.

Google
Food was ok. Cheese plate is just the regular cheeses you'd cook with (Romano, provolone, etc.). Service was good, but they added a mandatory 20% "tip" to our check, even though we only had 3 people in our party. I would have given them 20% if I was actually given an option, but the fact that it was just added left a bad taste in my mouth. Won't return.

Yelp
great food and amazing service and the employees were very kind and friendly. The energy and ambience was amazin.

Yelp
Great experience on a Sunday afternoon! Got a last minute reservation (which wasn't needed). Food/drinks: gluten free, dairy free pizza! Yes please! Marinara DOM was simple but really delicious. Very thin pizza, which I don't always love, but the crust was flavorful as were the toppings. (I got to sample the margarita as well, which was very good but not cheese free.) Service: good! Too fast, actually, but he was understanding after we needed even more time to settle in. They made a mistake with the order, quickly rectified it, and gave us an extra pizza in the process! Easily accommodated a baby with a booster seat. Ambiance: Now this is the star. Very cool place. The vibe was nice, even in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. I love the tile work and the Vespa chilling by the bathroom area. I'm excited to try the Brookland location next!

Yelp
A decent Italian spot for lunch; we came because they had room for 17 of us, reserved a few weeks in advance. $462 total for dinner for 8 adults and 9 kids, including a few drinks and desserts. * Bruschette Bufala ($12) - 2 stars Nothing special - the bread was a little stale, the tomato not the most ripe. The arugula did not stay on the bread. Like something you might whip up in your kitchen with average Safeway ingredients. * Stuffed Gnocchi ($21) - 3 stars This is the most spherical gnocchi I've ever had. Not very soft. * Fusilli - 3 stars Pretty average, pasta quite soft, sauce a little runny, but my kids enjoyed it. * Prosciutto Cotto (Ham) Pizza Napoletana ($17) - 3 stars I suppose the "ham" should have given it away, but just note the topping is not prosciutto, but really just slides of ham, maybe even cold cut ham. The crust had a crunch but the inside was not as soft and stretchy as many pizza napoletanas I've had out there. * Diavola (spicy) ($18) - 3 stars I didn't even realize this was supposed to have spicy salami, I didn't taste it at all. Again just ok, and the red pepper pieces were very small. * PIZZA IN TEGLIA ALLA ROMANA Salsiccia This was decent. A thicker crust than the napoletana style. The meat was not very evenly distributed, so some slices had a ton of meat and others barely any. * La Bomba ($8) - 3 stars Pretty much what you'd expect for nutella-filled pizza crust! You do get a couple pieces. * Tiramisu ($9) - 3 stars Fine, a little small (a single serving cake that comes in a plastic cup).

Yelp
Both the Neapolitan and "grandmother" style pizzas are wonderful! Wine prices are more than reasonable for DC and taste delicious (Rose and Montepulciano). Friendly service and good atmosphere!

Yelp
I had brunch here with friends on a Saturday morning and it's definitely a gem. I went with what the server recommended which were the vivace salad and the Parmesan gnocchi. It did not disappoint. I haven't had gnocchi in a long time and it was everything I missed. And for dessert, gelato. Our server checked in on us regularly and made sure we were good. The ambiance is a really cute one. All the designs and decorations caught our eye and was one of the reasons we decided to eat here.

Yelp
This place is across from my hotel and was a perfect spot to grab a bite after my flight in. The gluten free dough was very tasty and I enjoyed the burrata pizza. The flavor was amazing. The staff were incredibly attentive and the food came out quick.

Yelp
I had the stuffed gnocchi and I've never had anything like it before! Super flavorful and delish! I would recommend it as an appetizer to share though because while I'm sure it's plenty of calories, I found it was not very filling as an entree. My husband tried the pizza and says it's now in his top 5 pizza spots in DC. The olive oil they put on the pizza and on the gnocchi is really flavorful, I wanted to take home a bottle! It's a casual place but the food tastes like it came from somewhere fancy. Would be a good date night spot!

Sam H.

Yelp
quite honestly the best pizza I've ever had and the deserts are HEAVENLY. I would absolutely recommend , the service was super fast and very kind. the whole vibe of the place was so cute and cozy, 10/10 would come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Possibly one of the best Neapolitan pizzas I've had in DC. It checked all the boxes: the crust was chewy, thin, and very flavorful, the sauce had great balance of sweetness and tang, cheese was fresh and mild. Plus the 12-inch pizza is huge and loaded with toppings - took me 3 days to finish and definitely worth the buck ($17). I ordered takeout but the audience in the restaurant looked very cute. I saw many families and friend groups dining in. The service was quick and I got my food within 20 mins of ordering. Pro-tip always heat up your pizza in a pan with, medium to low heat, a few drops of water, and lid on - the bottom crisps up nicely and makes it taste almost fresh out of the oven!

Yelp
Amazing food and service was exceptional! We arrived around 5pm on a Friday and they said we needed reservations but accommodated us even though we didn't have reservations. We sat at the bar and the bartender Brenda was so friendly! She chatted with us and make great drinks! The food was amazing! We had pizza, lasagna and a gluten free pasta. Everything was very authentic and freshly made! It was so good that we went back the next day!!
google avatar

Yelp
Best pizza I have had in this area! The pizza is still tasty after heating it up and great for leftovers.

Erykah L.

Yelp
Trump lovers, how sad. will never eat here again. mediocre pizza at best anyway. Saw a dead rat outside also.
google avatar

Allie W.

Yelp
Went here for the gluten free pizza and it did not disappoint! The crust was very tasty, we loved it! We got the diavola which was spicy but not too spicy. We also got the homemade gelato which was delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Yes all around! If you're craving amazing pizza please look no further than Menomale. I got the Margherita pizza Roman style which is their version of a deep dish. Simple ingredients bursting with flavor! I'd love to try the classic version of the pizza and see how they compare. I had a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon which was absolutely delicious. And finally I can't forget the dreamy and perfectly favored Cannoli for desert. They flavor the treat with orange zest and having studied abroad Italy with quite a bit of experience with cannolis, this was by far my favorite one I've ever had. It was surprisingly not busy at all on a Sunday afternoon, but service remain absolutely attentive and helpful. So happy to have this gem of a resturant in my neighborhood I can't wait to explore more of the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the worst pizza I've had in my 47 years on this Earth. We got delivery through an app and I know that can be hit or miss but the crust was extremely undercooked; can't blame that on the delivery. The sauce was bland and even the pepperoni and the sausage were bland. Do not recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Love Menomale. Seriously good Neopolitan-style pizza. Love the diverse offerings, my personal favorite is the Salsiccia. Note that depending on your appetite, one pizza per adult is probably advised. Highly recommend Menomale. It is my go to spot for pizza in Brookland!
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant was just across the street from our hotel so my friend and I thought we would try it out. We are so glad we did, the food was excellent. We had a memorable experience. Our server was Jose and he was so professional that I thought he was the owner. He suggested the Vivace Insalate salad and we loved the strawberries and feta cheese. We also had the Salsiccia pizza and lemon cake and both were excellent. The decor of the restaurant was simple, clean, and charming. I wish they had this place back home!

Yelp
Went here for dinner during a fun museum trip for our Granddaughter' birthday. Couldn't have made a better choice. We all ended up ordering pizza, and it was great. This is the real deal, from the crust all the way up. At our table, we ended up with several Quattro Formaggi, Salsiccia, and Margherita options, as well as house salads. Among 8 of us (with 2 kids), we ate almost everything. That was all great, but the star of the show may have been dessert. We don't typically do dessert out, but hey, it was a birthday. All the adults went with the cannoli. Very good. And the kids went with the Marshmallow Pizzetta. OMG, that thing is great! Had a little alcohol too, so this ended up being a bit pricey. But it was worth it and a great experience.

Yelp
I love calzones, especially made the old style way with ricotta. I may have caught you guys on an off night literally minutes before closing time but I just wanted to let you guys know about the recent order of your calzone. Unfortunately it wasn't something I think I would order again. Can you please see the pictures. The dough was a bit undercooked, not a lot of color, and the fillings were cold. When I went to tear it in half there was no steam or cheese pull, just a watery mass that plopped in the box. It was a watery soaked mess as you can see. Kinda gross. Love you guys and have ordered in the past. Just wanted to bring it to your attention. Thanks and look forward to trying something again soon!

Yelp
4/5 Menomale was really cool. The restaurant is cute and small. I was thinking about going here on a first date and I don't know if I still would. While it's a cool little place, it's not exactly cozy. Anyway the service was good and food as well. It was not the best neopolitan I've had but still quite good. Pepperoni and mushroom really popped though I wish the cheese would've been a bit more savory. That would've taken this to a 5. Not bad at all though!
google avatar

Jackie K.

Yelp
The pizza was really wet but it was good. The cheese slid right off. The dough of the pizza was really what made it. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly. Lots of cheese on it. The lobster ravioli portion was very small for the money. The food was good and I would go back.
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
Still great pizza and service. Highly recommended. Support your local pizza joint, grab a cold beer, and enjoy this thin crust pizza. And boycott the Ledos pizza next door! Why would this chain restaurant open up right next to Menomale. That is very not cool!
google avatar

Suzie Z.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious pizzas operated by an Italian family. There is also a cute supermarket next door. We ordered Neapolitan pizza which supposedly has thin crust but these have rather thick ones. I really enjoyed the Diavola which was marked as spicy but more of a tomato flavor. The Di Ettore is a chef special but I just wish that it has more sauce.
google avatar

Una D.

Yelp
Pizza was pretty solid which ordered an individual pie. They have plenty of free parking in the lot next to it. The main issue I have is that the service is good but they definitely want to get out of there on time and they make you quite aware of it So it wasn't really a place where you can chill out quote at the closing point. If I was in the mood for pizza I'd be mindful of that and come at an earlier time.

Raymond N.

Yelp
Across from our hotel, a Great Find. Outstanding service! (Cuban like my wife) our server..Bruchetta nice, Calamari and shrimp, super.. Our thick crust pizza, really YUM! Thank you Menomale!
google avatar

Alexis S.

Yelp
This place is a must if you want fabulous authentic Italian in NOMA. They are especially known for their stuffed gnocchi (which I tried) and it was the best gnocchi I've had to date. Already craving my next visit!
google avatar

G M.

Yelp
Wow. What an awesome meal! Friendly service. But again, the food is so good I could probably overlook crappy service. This place gets it right.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
I'm very picky with pizza...I ordered the one with prosciutto and arugula (my go-to). It was very good, I have to say. The dough was fluffy and light, and the ingredients seemed very fresh. Service was nice, fast and friendly. The ambience is rather cosy, we were sitting at the counter (as usual) and it felt homey. It's not super big, and there weren't many people, so I don't know what happens when the place fills up, but it's furnished with a lot of Italian handcrafts (tables, pained tiles and similar...). Which I love! :) It's not my number one, though. I'll keep looking for my pizza match :)

Yelp
Between this location and the other one, I'm not sure pizza in DC gets better than this. Right now this location is a little slow, which is too bad because it deserves ALL the hype. But because it's pretty slow right now, it's got a really nice, quiet atmosphere. This time I actually decided to try something new (shocking, I know), and along with my usual Diovola (seriously, my favorite pizza in DC), we tried the Di Ettora. It was nice to branch out into something new! I'm happy to share that it's also fantastic. The prosciutto was fresh and tasty, and the Parmesan was delicious. Honestly, the Brookland location was one of my favorites when I lived in DC, but this one is equally as delicious with a great atmosphere. We also tried the Burro D'Oliva. The spicy oil (red one) was delicious but DEFINITELY spicy (my lips are a little swollen lol), and the other two were flavorful and mild. All three were delicious, and the bread was baked to perfection. One of the biggest mistakes you could make in DC is thinking about checking out this restaurant (either location, but honestly this one is a nicer space itself) and decide not to eat here. The service is fantastic and every employee is kind, helpful, and willing to talk you through any questions. Please check it out! Let's keep this FANTASTIC local pizza Place operational. Amazing food. My boyfriend dove into all of the food, so alas, all I have a photo of is the Diavola, but it's my favorite pizza in all of DC, so, seriously, check out this location and order this pizza. In the photo, you can also see small white containers holding the infused olive oils from our burro d'oliva. We used the leftovers with our crusts too.

Yelp
Great pizza!! I love the classic but the sauce pie is also delicious. Ordered pick up last min and it was quick and staff was very kind!
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
Wow! I love Menomale's pizza! One of the best pizzas in DC. The crust was thin and crispy! The toppings were fresh. It was so delicious. I was ready for a second pizza.
google avatar

Yelp
I guess it's probablly a good thing there's not a location in Phoenix, yet.... Hint hint, wink wink... It's was right across from Hyatt Place, maybe too convenient.. We dined in and ordered take out four times literally could not stay away! The food we devoured was Margarita pizza and the Chef's Special pizza with Salmon both (romano style) they were fabulous and crispy. Drooling just thinking about it! Also tried Gnocchi alla sorentina with Straccitella sauce, and Ravioli. Eccellente! Cannnot forget dessert...We ordered the Cappuccino Truffle, Limoncello Truffle, and the Marshmallow Pizzetta. Everything was incredible! I will definitely return the next time I am in town. The gentleman from Napoli made us feel welcome and the service was excellent on all four visits. Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
I ordered the Mt. Vesuvius pizza to-go, and it was fantastic. Sweet, salty, and with a perfectly soft and chewy crust. The blistered cherry tomatoes burst in your mouth, though they do roll off the pizza if you eat it with your hands. Delicious.
google avatar

Jose F.

Yelp
MENOMALE is as authentic as Italian food can get! We got the largest pizza size and it was MORE than enough for 3 hungry men, lol! It tasted just as delicious when we ate the leftovers later. Not to mention, GIO the owner is very welcoming and a nice guy! They have a full bar and opened pretty late in the evening! Thank you, GIO! I'm so glad this pizza spot is literally right next to my apartment complex!
google avatar

Kristen H.

Yelp
I came here for pizza on a friend's recommendation and it definitely did not disappoint. I had the chicken pesto and walnut pizza and you should definitely get that when you are there! The wine selection was also nice. It's a very clean, inviting space and the servers were friendly. I can't get to 5 starts since the focaccia we ordered was definitely not focaccia. Instead it was just cooked pizza dough. Very tasty, but not focaccia. I would definitely go again.
google avatar

DT D.

Yelp
Great food, excellent service, relaxing ambiance. Perfect place to eat with a friend or family.

Yelp
After picking up a few different pizzas here for lunch, I have to say I wasn't entirely sold. Maybe my memories from traveling Italy have ruined pizza for me forever! But the Napoletana pies we got just weren't very memorable. Though I loved the fluffy crust, the Margherita was watery and unstable, while the Diavola felt disconnected with uneven bites and toppings that didn't meld together. Both were fine, but not sure I'd rush to get them again. The Romana pizza though was definitely the standout. Kind of reminded me of the pizza you'd get at birthday parties growing up but the best version of it. Super cheesy, thick crust, and well balanced ratios. A little bit oily but not necessarily in a bad way.

Janet I.

Yelp
This is my second time going to this restaurant. Love the eggplant sandwich and the portions were good. Pizza was a bit soggy but tasty.
google avatar

Vladyslav S.

Yelp
I found this place accidentally. I am so glad that I decided to check it out. This restaurant definitely deserve attention. One of the best pizza places I ever been. Maybe even the best one. I am definitely recommend this place if you looking for real "Italian Pizza". Me and my friends ordered 3 different pizzas and it is hard to tell which one was better. Looks like it is my new best pizza place. Unfortunately it is so far away from my home. I can't wait to visit "MENOMALE NOMA" again!
google avatar

Kembral N.

Yelp
Want some authentic Italian pizza? This place is for you! The owners are from Italy and were able to bring a taste to DC. They currently have two locations in DC. Need more reasons to trust their credibility of authentic pizza? They're certified by Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, based in Naples, Italy! They offer Pizza Napoletana (their bread and butter) and Pizza Romana. We tried the Di Ettore (chefs Special) minus cherry tomatoes. Ambience: Italian music played in the background. The servers were extremely nice and resourceful. They made menu recommendations (spot on for first timers). Service: fantastic as indicated above. Food quality: mouthwatering delicious. The garlic, the cheese, the batter - all delicious. Covid precautions: masks and you have to write your contact info in their "contact tracing log"- a precaution just in case of exposure. Price: reasonable.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
This second location for Menomale will never match the residential charm of the original, but I must say they decorated the heck out of it. The neighborhood is about as urban as DC gets and not an easy area to park in, but the inside is easy to eat in. The menu includes the same Neopolitan pizza they're known for and a similar-looking oven, but also offers square pizza that they call Roman style. Notably, it is offered in several sizes, and the smallest is sized and priced for a single person, while the largest must be for an entire party. The salad I got was as fresh, beautifully presented, and as loaded with heavy feta as the last one I ate at the original. I tried the new pizza and found the crust soft and crispy, with the basil sharply shining through. There's a store of imported food next door, and the ingredient quality here always shines through. I haven't actually been to Italy, but until I do I'm happy to have Menomale set the standard for this kind of food around here.
google avatar

Genesis D.

Yelp
Typically when I think of dining at a pizza place, I don't find much of other Italian dishes. Or vice verás when I think of Italian dining, typically I won't find pizza options. That or the dishes are family style and or too much to eat for a small party. Welp, Menomale solves those problems as they have a little bit of everything for all things Italian and pizza. I was able to enjoy a light fare of Italian dining with my hubby and twin toddlers and still feel full leaving the restaurant. We ordered the bruschetta sampler, primavera pizza Romana (only the quarter tray), some ravioli, chocolate gelato, and cannolis. Everything tasted great! Before coming through, I called to make sure they can accommodate my toddlers and though they don't have high chairs, the booster seats were actually really nice - checkout my photo of their booster seats that strap to the chair. They were able to seat high and see everything on the table. Even though the ambiance is not formal or anything, I'd say it's a great place to go on a date or something. Ya know, Italian fine dining minus the fine part hehe. Just casual. There is also a round table that had I think about 8 adults when we arrived. So if you are a large party I highly rec that table but with a reservation.
google avatar

Lindsey M.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of the Brookland location and am always so frustrated how difficult it was for me to get there, so I was so excited when I heard they were opening a NOMA location! The restaurant is just off the mail strip of NOMA and there is a lot of construction around it at the moment, so if you are not looking for it, you may miss it, but you would be missing out. Their pizza is my favorite in town. I'm a traditionalist, almost always opting for the Napolitano pizza (chewy wood-fired crust with a paper thin center) Quattro Fromage. But this location also has pizza romana, a square thicker pizza with what I would describe as a focaccia style crust. Both were great, but the white pizza we ordered had no sauce so for me it was a little dry. They are also making fresh pastas at this location, so I can't wait to return for something else!
google avatar

Yelp
Bottom line: Great Food, Good Service, fun location...a little pricy. First time here with 8 friends. The food is amazing and authentic Italian. Okay do you are going to pay a little more but the quality of food, and value is easily worth it. The drink menu contains a combination of Italian and local products making for a unique opportunity to make some of your favorites. The restaurant is generally conversational and comfortable. The service is pretty good even with a large table of friends. Definitely great for a date or a dinner with friends and colleagues.
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
I agree with the other commenters - go for the Roman style options rather than the Neapolitan! We ordered the Melenzane 1/4 Tray and a Brooklandissima, both of which had great flavor but the Melenzane (Roman style) survived better as takeout (stayed warm longer). The Roman style also had a more flavorful crust. The restaurant itself is very pretty, with lots of beautiful tiles and other art. I suspect it would be a great place to gather with a small group or as a date night spot. Our takeout order was ready very quickly - about 15 minutes! Overall, I would definitely go back to try more of the Roman-style pies!
google avatar

Joseph G.

Yelp
Pizza was amazing. Small restaurant but nice for a group a friends and good bite. Not to busy and the prices are reasonable.
google avatar

Bill W.

Yelp
I love the brookland location but had to check out the romana pizza only offered at Noma. It did not disappoint. I love this place. The crust was so crispy and airy. The cheese was plentiful. And the sauce was perfectly tangy. Worth noting: they do have outdoor seating. Also worth noting: parking is not great around here so if you are driving come early

Yelp
Just returned home from a trip and headed to One of our DC favs. LOVE this pizza at our fav NoMa location! We got both types of pizza. Great crusts- thin and the neopolitan! Quattro Stagioni and Romana alla romana w sausage Very Very good as usual! Next we hope to sit on the patio!
