Stylish artist's retreat with modern Mediterranean cuisine and cocktails

"The Experimental Cocktail Club was always destined for bigger things, but it’s still surprising, in retrospect, that the path from a hip bar in Paris to a beautiful farmhouse hotel on the Balearic island of Menorca took barely a decade to map out. The design is no less at home under the timbered ceilings of these farmhouse buildings and the result is both true to the 19th-century finca and indelibly stamped with a contemporary personality." - Mark Fedeli

"Menorca Experimental is a hotel located near Cala Llucalari on Menorca's southern coast. It was opened by Pierre-Charles Cros and the Experimental Group in 2019, offering creative cocktails and a unique design inspired by Pablo Picasso's imagined Menorcan home."

"I recently had a similar exchange with Menorca Experimental, a dreamy new hotel where we’re headed in September."

"Here is a splendid rags to riches story: a derelict 19th-century manor house is found on an ancient quarry in the heart of Menorca. From the ruins, an inspired British-Spanish team salvages wood beams, stone walls and terracotta tiles. Three years later, this gorgeous rental villa emerges, set in 2.5 acres of beautifully terraced grounds. A contemporary kitchen and living room has been carved out of crumbling sandstone. Stairs that were never completed now climb to 4 bright bedrooms, with windows over a lavender-filled landscape. The villa is an idyllic family-and-friends retreat. Our children played amongst the orchard trees while we sipped wine on the patios; everyone cooling off in the lovely rectangular pool, a transformed water tank. And who doesn’t love sharing home-cooked meals al fresco? It’s a short walk to the medieval streets of Alaior and a quick drive to the sandy beaches of Son Bou. But we found this enclave so enticing, we were just as happy to soak up long lazy days and starry evenings right here in peaceful seclusion. Highs A great option for a family (using 2-3 bedrooms) or 2 families travelling together (using all 4, a mix of doubles and twins)We were enchanted by the magical walled gardens filled with wildflowers, fruit trees and friendly tortoisesThe house is immaculate, beautifully light and airyA great kitchen for self-catering plus BBQsPlenty of terrace space for lounging and alfresco dining Lows The nearest restaurant and supermarkets are a 10-minute walk awayYou'll need a car to reach the beach (15 minutes); but this central spot is well placed for exploring all corners of the islandThere's a TV, DVD player and stereo in the living room, but don't expect gadgets galoreNo aircon, just ceiling fans" - Sarah de Vere-Drummond
