The Best Shakshuka In LA

"Fairfax can be a lot, and sometimes you need a little moment to yourself with a coffee and your thoughts. Mensch Café and Bakery is exactly that kind of refuge where you’ll find a delicious combination of French/Kosher baked goods like flakey croissants with lox and schmear or the glossiest selection of challah you’ll find in town. This place also serves a wonderful shakshuka with a side of that very challah. The sauce comes out a dark crimson red with a subtle smokiness and acidic kick to it while the eggs are wedged between plenty of onions, bell peppers, and a very healthy serving of fresh parsley to bring some peppery freshness. You can add feta if you’re looking for something a little more savory, or simply enjoy it as is with a side of olives and Israeli salad." - sylvio martins

Google
I’ve been on multiple occasions. I love their baked goods. Last visit I got the grilled cheese with tomato soup. The soup was lacking in flavor and the grilled cheese wasn’t as hardy as I was hoping. Over all, I recommend sticking to their breads and baked goods, as well as coffee.

Google
Genuinely the best croissants I’ve ever had!! We went in the morning and they were fresh, warm and flaky! The service was quick and excellent! Very friendly and they even added a free one that they said was a must-try since it was our first time! Will definitely be going back next time we are in LA!

Google
Great atmosphere! Staff was friendly. We got the egg burrito and cinnamon roll. Good food but room for improvement. Cinnamon roll was delicious. The burrito felt too heavy and suggest adding vegetables and substituting one of the side sauces with a non spicy option. Also, we advise creating a roof covering for all tables for the outside seating since the trees drop berries.

Guess what? We stumbled upon Mensch Bakery after ditching our original French Bakery plan, and it turned out to be an amazing find! My wife gets the credit for discovering it. Finding parking was a breeze, and once inside, we were surrounded by the most tempting bagels, pastries, bread, and baked goods. It was so hard to choose! I went for the Eggs Benedict with Salmon, and my wife opted for scrambled eggs. Both dishes were fresh and absolutely delicious, and the portion sizes were just perfect. The coffee was out of this world, and even my wife, who's super picky about her Diet Coke, was impressed with the taste.

Google
Incredible experience catering a business brunch with Mensch. I had a couple really great people like Julie help me take the order, answered all of my questions & then Chris helped me pack it in my truck. It was all on time, with everything included. My doctors RAVED about the food and it was a very enjoyable morning. Their quiches and desserts were amazing and the bagels… I NEVER eat west coast bagels b/c I am east coast guy, but dang they were very very good. Well done guys… can’t wait to do it again soon!

Google
The pastries and Marla bread, Quiche , almond croissant really good. A bit pricey , though imma come back .

Google
Avocado toast, Danish pastry, challah, coffee, and More. they do deliver by 3rd Party app. Street parking.

Yelp
Used mensch to cater a light breakfast and a lunch for my workplace. Fruit, pastries, coffee and then sandwiches, salad and cookies. Plus delivery crosstown. The workplace is very corporate and only one participant needed kosher. So it was pleasure presenting good food, well displayed that they enjoyed. Really appreciate and look forward to another time.

Yelp
In town for an early morning appointment with my son and this was right around the corner. I'm familiar with the area but not Mensch. When walking in the aroma itself is like a good morning from God. My son and I shared pancakes and a breakfast burrito. Classic but with a Mensch twist. Quality food and friendly service. The style was definitely one with its roots and the culture of the neighborhood and its faith. Authenticity is appreciated.

Yelp
This place is such a fun little restaurant. Its always busy and definitely deserves to be. I havent eaten everything yet, but I have loved everything I tried so far. I had Vanilla Frappe when I went the first time, and its wonderful! the taste reminds me of a vanilla shake when I was a kid. The taste is very similar to the coffee I have when I am in Israel. The restaurant is filled with really nice people with big smiles. The staff is great, its very homey. I also want to give a shoutout to Louis, he is a great addition to this restaurant, he has the biggest smile and takes care of everyone that comes through the door. They have breakfast and lunch options as well as delicious pastries. Their Bourekas is out of this world! If you havent tried it yet, I highly recommend it. One thing to note. They do close at 3:30pm and they get busy, so make sure to go early.

Yelp
The best pain aux raisins I've ever tasted! The service was excellent and attentive. The salmon arugula salad with pine nuts and the roasted vegetable soup were both excellent.

Yelp
Ambiance: it's a bakery and cafe store for breakfast and lunch, always crowded inside and outside, disorganized waiting lines Service: lack of service, and not very patient Food: cafe menu and freshly baked pastry Sufganiyot Raspberry - **** tasty donut with jelly, recommend Mini Almond Chocolate Croissant - *** soggy texture Plain Raisin Cheese Roll - **** sweet and savory taste, recommend Price: overpriced for the quality, expect $15 per person, and be aware they charge 5% kashrut fee on your bill
google avatar

Yelp
OMG!! The donuts!! They have them once a year and they are worth the trip across town for me. The flavors we got were jelly, chocolate, vanilla, and lemon meringue. They are all vegetarian and non-dairy. They have dairy options but we did not get them. We liked them all but the lemon meringue donut was so special. Split it with a family member who said it was the best donut they ever had! Hoping to go back while they are still on special this week!! Mensch Bakery is a wonderful brunch spot. It's a cute ambiance. They are a dairy restaurant and they also have some fish. It does get very busy in the morning. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is metered on the street. Luca was our cashier and he was wonderful! Such a pleasure to work with! Other food we got to go: Greek salad and mushroom quiche. All good! PS these donuts were currently featured in LAMag!

Yelp
I discovered this yummy place with a friend and it was perfect for our post yoga meal! Great atmosphere, lots of activity, friendly staff and great pastries!

Yelp
Disappointed by their sufganiyot. There was the tiniest dollop of filling in ours and additionally, the dough was "tough".

Yelp
Very tasty, clean , fast and delicious. Affordable price! This place is full of art pastries with delicious food on the top any kind of bird that you are looking for!!!!

Yelp
Last minute need for 3 dozen pastries? Done & with a smile! Reasonable pricing and saw other items I would like to get another time.

Yelp
Delicious kosher! Wonderful customer service great experience. Would come here again with family and friends anytime!

Yelp
Kashrut fee for what? Pastries were meh. Staff was rude. Ambiance is whatever. It's just a bakery. Got a whole platter with pastries for the company after we decided to try them, everyone was meh. Churro pastry seemed colonized af. Chocolate pastry was dry. Wouldn't go back.

Yelp
Came mid morning during the week. Busy, busy! Have yet to dine here but the food I saw others eating looked fresh and made my mouth water. The sweets are just as tempting. Got raspberry sufganiot, sufganiot filled with what tasted like thick caramel custard and a perfect mini almond croissant. My stomach aches that I don't live closer. Four pastries cost me $15. Only the caramel "Lotus" sufganiot was filled sufficiently. Plenty of awesome whipped cream on top. Would get that again. Lots of relaxing outdoor space. Found street parking easily. They have a clear bakery shield when ordering that's hard to talk over the inside chatter.

Megan C.

Yelp
We ordered Two tarts , breakfast burrito and chocolate scone. There is ample seating inside and outside. The tarts with both just okay as the crust was not flaky or fresh. The burrito was good but at the price point I wish there was more to it. The scone was incredible and worth the $4. Friendly service in a local family business. Also sells fresh bread by the loaf that is incredible.

Yelp
Got authentic sufganiyot, a bit busy but means that's it's fresh! A bit hectic to find parking though

Yelp
Mensch Bakery was a very nice place to go for brunch! I went around 10a on a Friday and it was very busy. This may have been due to Shabbat so I would recommend going not on a Friday. But the ambiance inside is okay and they have a large display of their baked goods. They even have a wall of challah and bread that you can select from. During this busy time I noticed that they had employees in the crowd with handheld check out tablets so you you did not have to get in line. Someone new to the bakery could be a little confused on where do order. I got the challah French toast and a hot tea. The price is what I expected from a kosher LA bakery, ~$25 for everything. The food did not take too long to come out and it was warm and fresh. The French toast was really good and the tea was loose leaf put into a disposable bag. Parking there is a little bit of a hassle but I was able to find street parking. The parking on the main road is metered for an hour max. I will definitely want to go back to try their other baked goods.

Yelp
This was a cute spot and I felt right at home. I ordered the shakshuka and my friend ordered a pasta dish. My shakshuka was nothing special (sorry! I'm spoiled in this department!) but his pasta was creamy decadent divine. The atmosphere was really great. Boisterous crowd and a mix of families, friends, individuals doing work. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Their seating was comfortable and we nabbed a booth style seat inside even though it was very busy for Sunday brunch. Would not hesitate to go again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
I can't say enough great things about Mensch Bakery! They handled a 300-person catering order for my office this week and everything went beyond smoothly. It also gave me an opportunity to try many items on their menu, and they did not disappoint. I can't wait to work with them for other catered events. These are the items my office raved about: -The super fresh and plentiful smoked salmon -The deliciously fresh-baked chocolate babka and gorgeous braided mini challahs -The light, fluffy mini quiches with buttery, flaky crust -The rich, flavorful shakshuka served with perfectly sautéed potatoes -The freshest orange juice we've ever tasted!! Julie and Costa were a pleasure to work with. They were extremely responsive, gave helpful suggestions, and were quick to provide a proposal. This level of customer service sets them high above the slew of other establishments I've worked with. Their prices are also extremely reasonable considering the product quality. When it came to delivery the staff was right on time, and went above and beyond to help us unload the food and put it into chaffers. Thanks to Yoav and the rest of the staff! Costa also reached out afterwards to make sure everything went smoothly, which I really appreciated. I've also heard they have the best almond croissants in town, which I can't wait to try. Thanks Mensch team for helping me curate a wonderful event!

Yelp
Food wasn't pleasing. Seen on social media didn't like the food. Food took forever to get to me and cashier was disrespectful Also poor customer service. When I mean the rudest staff I mean it please spend your money and time elsewhere. After I got my food I have a small issue with being overcharged and the cashier accuses me of lying and when I showed proof he got a few other staff to gang up on me stating why does it matter you didn't spend that much money to me telling the worker to check how much I spent

Yelp
I walked in here after seeing it was a french bakery. I was anticipating a more authentic croissant. When I walked in, I was surprised how small it was and what seemed a limited variety of bakery items. What surprised me more than that was it appeared to be slightly disorganized and an average looking bakery. From the sign out front, I was expecting a really cute bistro, or bakery. I hoped that the product would be great. I only ordered a croissant. The young man that took my order was very nice and engaging; I appreciated that. I asked him to warm the croissant in a toaster, which he did. When I ate the croissant after I got back into my car, it was flaky outside and soft inside. I thought it was pretty decent. I wished it was more buttery.

Shayna E.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing pastries, but this is more of a grab and go place. They have seating, but it's a hit or miss depending on the day. I've never tried their sandwiches, but the drinks are okay.
google avatar

Ana F.

Yelp
Deliciousness!!! Everyone is super nice and attentive here. I will keep coming back because I cannot get enough of their delicious bakery goods!

Amy T.

Yelp
The mini almond croissant that I just ate is one of the best I've ever had. Looking forward to trying more of their pastries.

Yelp
Had the babka and a couple borekas. Wish the cheese boreka was cheesier but the babka was amazing.

Yelp
Best Croissants hands down Wonderful breakfasts. The food is fresh with care and purpose.xcellent goat kosher dairy.

Yelp
HaRav Yitzchak Berkowitz Posek and Rosh Yeshiva of Aish HaTorah Yerushalayim said when giving a low rating one should give the rating and then write exactly why that one gave that rating. The Rosh Yeshiva said to avoid using language such as "the service was awful" and things like that. This is why I gave this place the rating I did. My wife ordered a cinnabon and a bunch of cookies through Uber eats. When she got them the dough was raw. She called the bakery and demanded to speak to the manager who would not take responsibility. He said the dough was not raw and accused her of lying. He told her not to call or order from here again. She called Uber eats customer support to complain and she also sent pictures. So the operator called the bakery to talk to the manager with my wife on the phone and the bakery did not know my wife was on the phone and when the operator was talking to the manager the manager made sarcastic insulting comments and denied the incident and asked sarcastically "did the lady even send you pictures?" The operator said "yes she did send pictures" the manager asked what do the pastries look like? The operator responded "raw dough." The manager sarcastically responded "so your a baker?" and said "I want that lady blocked from ordering here". My wife and I are long time customers of this place so this was a very upsetting experience and just the attitude that he doesn't care and would have not taken responsibility. I will be posting this review on other platforms and we will not be eating there anymore

Jason ..

Yelp
Best whole wheat challah! The pastries are also delicious... I try to only eat them with my eyes, but usually buy a few and bit in. Coffees are also great.
google avatar

Yelp
The cinnamon rolls from Mensch are the most decadent, delicious cinnamon rolls I've ever had in my life. Hands down. They're so good that I almost didn't want to write this review, but I can't be greedy - there's plenty to go around for everyone - unless you place your order later in the morning because sometimes they sell out. The cinnamon rolls are generously sized and fairly priced considering all the sugar, butter, and love that goes into making these sweet treats. My boyfriend is the best and he loves to surprise me with cinnamon rolls. I'm not a morning person, but a surprise delivery from Mensch never fails to put me in a good mood!

Yelp
I stopped here this morning, just randomly. I was looking for the place next door, this place looked very inviting and upon entry the food looked so delicious. As I stood in line, the guy who appeared to be the manager or owner stepped in front of me without acknowledging my presence. The order taking lady walked away. Another guy spoke to me for. Behind the tall counter, but did not approach. I asked for a jalapeño cheese bagel, with cream cheese and Lox. Now at 7:45 am, at a bagel shop, that sounds reasonable, right? Well no, the guy behind the counter called over the first guy, who informed me the kitchen was closed and the best he could do is give me some cream cheese on the side. What? Ok, I think they were discriminating against me. I really find it hard to believe otherwise. I could see if it was right before closing time, but 7:45 am seems like the start of breakfast time. This made the made me very sad. That bagel looked really good.
google avatar

Esther L.

Yelp
I feel like most bakeries have one or two specialty items, but man literally everything I had here was so delicious. All the croissant based pastries had the most delightful crispy outer layer and all the fillings were amazing. I'm addicted to the chocolate babka- honestly life changing! I took a challah bread home to make a breakfast sandwich and couldn't stop eating it by itself. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Celia S.

Yelp
Favorite bakery in LA!!! The chocolate babka croissant is unbelievable and the burerkas are chefs kiss. Love you guys!!!!!

Y G.

Yelp
We catered our son's bris with Mensch's and the food was out of this world. Can't recommend them enough for catering! Will for sure be using them again!
google avatar

Marie C.

Yelp
Came here for the baked goods. The egg challah is pretty good. I think what stole the show was the chocolate almond croissant and the chocolate babka. Pretty amazing! I saw a lot of people dining in and pretty incredible for the small space. They have plenty of staff to help assist and you order from them and there are two registers in the front. I think this is primarily a Jewish bakery? Overall pretty neat spot with great baked goods!

Ching L.

Yelp
If I could give a zero star I will! I Bought two fresh sufganiyot (Jewish doughnuts) around 11:30 am and by 6:00 pm when we wanna ate it with our coffee the stuffing and the dough already tastes sour!!!!!! And we have the worst stomachache after this! DISGUSTING is the only word I could describe the favor, and the dough tastes like deep-fired dry bread. B"h I didn't give it to my kids. Forget about the pricy menu low quality food and horrible service because it is Kosher, but selling ROTTEN food is absolutely unacceptable. STOP TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP KOSHER BY SELLING ROTTEN FOOD! I don't know if the owner or whoever running this place will even care about this review to do any changes to the place. But people who care about what they put into their mouths definitely need to know about this.

Yelp
We were stranded in LA for Christmas during the snowpocolipse this winter. Mensch Bakery was open Christmas morning, and saved our day. Delicious quiche, good bagels, and flakey chocolate croissants.

Riley L.

Yelp
I got three pastries for togo, and they were all very mediocre. I went there in the morning around 10am and yet they didn't feel super fresh. I don't think I would go back
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
Amazing food the breakfast burrito is really good. Really everything is good. I definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Shannon E.

Yelp
You don't have to be kosher to appreciate this place. All the food is made in-house and it shows. My friend and I (neither of us kosher or Jewish) ordered several dishes to split and seriously loved everything. The cheese bourekas are delicious. The avocado toast was not only great but came with big portion of avocado on top. Do yourself a favor and order the shakshuka. It's an old family recipe and it's honestly one of the best shakshukas I have ever had. Bold statement I know. I had the plea of meeting Naama one of owners. She was so nice. After speaking with her for several minutes I honestly wanted to be her friend lol. Yoav the head Chef/Baker was there as well. He was working hard but still took the time to speak to us. You really get a family like atmosphere in this place. This is one of my new favorite bakeries in LA. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
There are these age old stereotypes of French people being rude...But wait, we are not in France and pretty sure this rude worker wasn't from their either. My wife and I were waiting in line to try this place for the first time on Christmas morning. I watched this very rude bald worker Forcibly, remove a chair from a family who was eating with their kids. He did not only NOT censor himself in front of them, but argued and grabbed the chair from their table which the kids were actually sitting. The lady sitting with her family said the Chef said it was ok. The guy did not care. These young kids watched this man by his actions and tone pretty much belittle their mom and dad in front of them. This gentleman, if you can call him that. Didn't even try to offer a solution. Only that the chair belonged somewhere else with some entitled attitude. I told the father with his family, it was one of the rudest things, I've witnessed in person in awhile. My wife and I decided to leave and not give this place a dime. The fact most good small cafes didn't survive the last few years makes the ones like these that did kinda more tragic. I try to have empathy, I try to wonder what the worker may have been going through, personal family issue etc..etc.. But when you act that way in front of little kids...it's time to go... Maybe he will be visited by 3 ghost tonight. Maybe Santa skipped his house. Maybe when he stole all the WHO'S presents and they just kept singing, it drove him and his dog Max into rude madness. Move on from this place.. there's way better out there. AU REVOIR forever.
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
Almond Croissants are delicious. As are the chocolate, lemon and pecan tarts. I've struggled to find a good Kosher bakery in Los Angeles and was apprehensive until my family gushed over these tarts. Order ahead as they need to prepare enough. Fridays are hectic but if you order and pay ahead, you can just about keep the car running to pop in and out. My guests at Thanksgiving told me it is the best bakery for their events. Feel like I've arrived!! Now let me at that bread selection that had my attention just walking through the door!! The staff is very helpful. Thank you for helping me negotiate my Kosher naïveté. Looking forward to sharing you with my family again soon....was that a caramel cheesecake on display?? You're killing me!!!!
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
I stopped in real fast to grab a couple kosher pastries and be on my way. One thing I can say is they were delicious. The one I recommended above the others is the cheese pastry...so good!!! Parking can be scarce and prices are a little high, but both negatives were worth the positive = 5 stars
google avatar

Magno P.

Yelp
Nothing like waking up early in the morning to the smell of fresh pastries that includes croissant and almond croissants. This bakery in LA definitely gives me some east coast vibes. They make everything on a daily basis. Nothing is from the day before. Come check them out and get you some baked goodies.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
I went because there was a good rating. The food was good (I'd say 3.5/5. The service was, hmmm what shall we say? ....very odd...you had to ask for water, and they tell you it is self serve, but it is behind the cash register....odd. Not a lot of eye contact when you talk to the people working, either...odd. On a busy noisy street, but tables outside. This is only odd because the tables inside were half blocked off and you had to side step to get to a seat....you guessed it, odd. A bit too expensive for an odd feeling restaurant with mediocre food. I'll try the bakery across the street next time.
google avatar

Omid S.

Yelp
The best kosher breakfast place and bakery in town! LOVE the omlete and salads. The food portions are perfect, the sides are great and the food is always fresh and you can tell it's made with quality ingredients. The staff are friendly, and the owner is definitely a mensch.
google avatar

Arielle P.

Yelp
To say I love Mensch Bakery is an understatement - their food is fantastic, staff is friendly and helpful and their Babka (ONLY AVAIL THURSDAY & FRIDAY) is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Go for the Babka but try everything else at some point too. Chef Yoav is a whiz in the kitchen and makes absolutely the best bread and treats. I've had the Tunisian Sandwich (off the menu), Shakshuka, Sabich and tons of other dishes.. oh yeah, did I mention the BABKA is insanely delicious and should not be missed under any circumstances. This spot is kosher- if that's important for you- and if it's not don't let the word "kosher" scare you away, it just refers to the way the food was prepped and certifies it was done correctly and under the supervision/approval of a rabbi (...right?). Any way, do not pass GO do not collect $200 just go directly to Mensch. **They close early on Friday and are closed all Saturday for Shabbat)

Lior M.

Yelp
Amazing place for coffee, pastries, and breakfast. Everything tastes good, very fresh, and friendly staff.

Joya E.

Yelp
Came here for the first time this past Sunday after seeing it on Instagram. I got 4 different kinds of sufganiyot/donuts for Hanukkah and it was amazing. I got the caramel, cheesecake which was dairy, custard, and jelly. It was around $3 each. I highly recommend going here for donuts and other baked goods. I would come back after the pandemic to have breakfast or lunch!!
