Portland Ramen Shop Baka Umai Will Open on SE Hawthorne This Spring | Eater Portland

"A ramen shop in Japan called Mutekiya is where Greenup says he had a revelation eating tonkotsu ramen in 2015, an experience that sparked his year-long effort to recreate the dish and ultimately led him to open his own ramen shop." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

I came to this restaurant on a recommendation, and it was absolutely worth it. Expect to queue for at least 40–50 minutes. About halfway through, when you’ve got around 20–35 minutes left, a waiter will come by to offer you the menu and once you have decided, get your order. They have both English and Japanese versions; the English menu seems to have slightly fewer options, but it’s still very comprehensive. For first-timers, the waiter usually recommends the Muteyika ramen. The broth was honestly the richest and most delicious I’ve ever had. If you’re not into rich broths, let them know, according to the menu, the chef can adjust the intensity. The noodles were great, but the pork was the real standout: thick, tender, and incredibly flavorful. There’s a “Tyasyu-men” option that comes with extra pork in the menu, and knowing what I know now, I definitely would’ve ordered that. They also offer concentrated jasmine tea that you can mix with the free water, which was a nice touch. Service and atmosphere were both excellent. My only minor complaint is that the stools are fixed to the floor, which makes them a bit awkward to sit on (and I’m not particularly large). Price: Special ramen ¥1650, large beer ¥600.

Always super long line unless you prolly came for supper. At least 30 minutes wait at most times, and I did experience over 2x of that. The venue was indeed relatively small and the turnaround wasn’t that swift. Nonetheless, all those couldn’t remove the fact that their ramen was unbelievably luscious! The broth was so rich, both the pork and even the crab miso one! The pork slices toppings sliced into generous thick cut yet still so tender that it did feel like easily melted in your mouth. Boiled eggs also cooked perfectly! I kept complaining about the wait yet kept finding myself coming back.

Google
Pro tip #1: get the raw garlic and crush it into your ramen. It adds such great flavor to the tonkotsu broth. Pro tip #2: skip the umakara (spicy) ramen. There's a spicy paste on the counter that you can add to the soup to give it some heat. Things I liked: the free Jasmine tea (that you add to the water) Things I didn't like: the cha-shu was a bit too salty

Google
Our dining experience here was very enjoyable because even though we had to queue for 30 minutes and were immediately given a menu at the beginning of the queue, the ramen was delicious and the soup was very strong in spices and the broth was very rich, especially the portion was large. The price and food were very comparable. The staff were very friendly and if you need to use the restroom while queuing, it was allowed. The location is very strategic and close to Iikebukuro station. Highly recommended ramen.

This is another ramen place I’d say is really delicious on this trip. The broth was flavorful and not too salty, the thin noodles were just right, and the pork slices were huge — they gave me four big pieces!

Google
This is the pork broth ramen taste I’ve been looking all over Tokyo for!!! Many rules in queuing up for this but I think it’s worth it. Love the texture of the vegetables, the pork slices, and of course the soup broth. This RLY hit the spot!!!

Google
A truly remarkable and unique tasting ramen. I had the standard portion of the famous ramen with gyozas. Standard are 3 think slices of pork, that give the broth it's soft sweet taste. Fortunately aprons are given to the guests if asked. It came in handy for me - the white t-shirt stayed clean. I took extra a detour for this restaurant and did not regret it. Mutekiya ramen tastes really different and this is what makes it worth a visit. Note that there is almost always a line there. I waited 15 minutes, but it was luck and I was only 1 guest. The restaurant inside is small and absolutely represents the flair of a typical Japanese Ramen shop. There is storage space for bags under the table.

Google
My second time here, usually 1 hr wait but definitely worth it. Great service, delicious food, the pork in the ramen is very tender, melts in your mouth. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
This place is definitely worth the hype! We came around lunchtime and waited in line for about 15-20 minutes. When we were near the front of the line, we were handed some menus- they had a variety of different languages available. We were in a group of 5, and opted to sit split up to be able to get seated quicker. Ramen dining culture in japan tends to be more of a quiet/solo experience anyways, so we didn't mind being split up. My husband and I got the number 1 and the number 4- some slightly variations in toppings, but the biggest difference is in the broth. The number 1 which is their house ramen definitely has a richer more full-bodied broth. Overall, highly recommend the wait. Was one of our favorite meals.

Yelp
4.5 stars Popular ramen spot in Tokyo, there's always a line whenever I walked past it so I decided to try it as well! The staff made sure we are aware of the wait and gave us the menu ahead of time so we are ready by the time we're seated. Honestly any ramen in Japan are better than the ones in Americas so it's still pretty good. The noodles are tender and they grill the meat before torch it to char it up a bit. Would recommend getting the gyoza as well!

Yelp
I'm a fan. After getting overall lackluster ramen options from my friends over our trip in Japan, I knew I needed to find a place that woo'd me and this place was it. We did have to wait in line outside in the cold and unfortunately because I (one person out of the 3 of us) had to used the restroom elsewhere... they kept pushing our party back since we "weren't all there". Ooops, sorry friends! Lol We had to order in the line outside so that they would prepare our food and have it ready by the time you sit down. Seems efficient for them, but you definitely can't lolly-gag around at this place. You eat and go. In the end, we got seated quicker than I thought we would which was nice considering the cold. I opted for the spicy ramen option and it was at a decent spice level, not gonna lie. The broth was really good. I do think the pork could've been a little more tender overall, but that's the only con I can say. I also added plenty of more spicy paste that's offered at the table to my ramen. Very good! Would recommend this place as a really solid ramen option in Tokyo.

Yelp
This is a popular ramen spot in Tokyo. I wanted to try it out for myself. I waited until late at night hoping the lines would be shorter. When I arrived there was still a line of around 25-30 people. The line moves at the speed at which people exit the restaurant. I think I waited close to 1 hr. They do bring you a menu while waiting so you can make your selection. The interior is tight and you are seated elbow to elbow. It was not uncomfortable. I ordered the #1 which was really good. Perfectly rich broth, thick slices of succulent pork and tasty noodles. Perfect execution. Can you get similar ramen in other less popular places? Yes! But as a ramen lover I had to check it out for myself.

Yelp
Probably the best ramen I've been to in Tokyo so far - not to mention that they open until very late at nights The broth is flavorful but not heavy, and their spicy ramen is ACTUALLY SPICY! Service was amazing even for Japanese standards, so I had to leave a physical review for them too :) Would definitely come back again in the future ごちそうさまでした!

Yelp
The best Ramen by far. And it's so good that it's the longest queue guaranteed. Arriving before 11:30am and it'll be a 20 min queue. After midday it can be 45/60 min or more. Very efficient team, taking your order when it'll soon be your turn to sit, so you are served fast, and then can eat and leave faster to make room for next customers. The Ramen is absolutely delicious, the chunks or porc are thick and generous, unlike some places when you have a paper thin slice. Many veggies and a delicious broth. Try it, satisfaction guaranteed. Decoration is also very nice.

Yelp
It's one of my favorite ramen shops in Tokyo right outside the Ikebukuro station. Stick with #1 and get the Mutekiya ramen special. Rich broth, super tender pieces of pork that fall apart to the touch and the perfect al dente noodles that draw rich broth into your taste buds during each slurp. There is almost always a 20-30 min line when it's not during rush hour but definitely worth the wait. Cash only, and a little tight for any party more than two. Friendly staff and English menu for those that need it.

David L.

Yelp
It's only 1,650 yen and the portion of the pork is huge for a typical size ramen bowl. The soup flavor tastes so rich. For any true meat lover you can't go wrong with this. This post is on Feb 17, 2025. This place is CASH only and does have a long line (wait time is about 20-30 mins) around 8:30pm)

Yelp
Mutekiya is a very popular restaurant in Ikebukuro. We got there at around 11:30, and there was already a line of about 30 people, both Japanese and non-Japanese people. When you get closer to the front of the line, the staff will give you a menu and you can place the order with them. The menu has multiple languages, English, Chinese, Korea, etc I opted for their Mutekiya Ramen Niktama, comes with 3 slices of chashu and a flavored egg. Broth was thick and flavorful. Overall an excellent bowl of ramen.

Yelp
We arrived around 8:15 PM, and there was a "short' line outside - we crossed the pathway to begin queuing on the other side. Literally three parties arriving within ten minutes of us cut the line, not seeing that we were on the other side five feet away. That was annoying, but to be fair, the sign indicating the end of the first line was completely covered by the people standing literally in front of it. We ended up waiting an hour, with about 20 people in front of us. The place seats probably 25 and the menu indicates you may not be able to sit together, though you can wait to do so. They are very efficient and menus in several languages exist, as well as a QR code to look at the menu - the server also came down the line to ask how many people were in our party and give us menus, and then take our orders, so once you're in, you get seated and your ramen is in front of you! It was a cold day, and after waiting an hour, we got in and were seated towards the back. Our food came a few minutes after, and then we dug in! Don't forget to review the veritable condiments that take up the wall in front of you - there's soy sauce, sesame oil, a spicy, salted green condiment (loved it!) and you can request raw garlic for 50 yen to squeeze into your ramen. Try it all! I'm pescatarian, but I do drink meat broth for convenience. The soup was rich and just the right amount of salt for me. I loved the choy sum vegetables and wish I had gotten another serving for 110 yen. I am not a huge ramen fan, so I don't know if this is amazing or not, but the lines probably indicate something. As I'm not a huge ramen fan, I don't know that I'd wait an hour again, but it obviously is a very popular spot.

Yelp
One of the more well known hole in the wall ramen places. I thought the ramen overall was good but not spectacular. The gyoza on the other hand was better than I expected. Got the most populat montekiya ramen. The broth was good but slightly under seasoned IMO. They were very generous with 3 large pieces of thick cut pork, i prefer them a bit more fatty esp being that chunky. The gyoza was perfectly cooked with golden brown bottom & silky thin wrap. This place is tiny, the seating/eating spaces are at a premium. Though I quite like this old Tokyo vibe.

Yelp
We made it to the famous Mutekiya down in Ikebukuro, and the timing was great because I had been craving ramen since I got here. It's about a 10 minute walk or so from the Ikebukuro Station, and a word of advice, arrive earlier rather than later since there is a wait involved if you get there too late. Pricing wise, reasonable for ramen for sure. It may be a well known ramen spot, but that doesn't mean the prices are going to be all wonky. Portion wise, you get a fair amount from the ramen to the ingredients. Parts that were great, everything except the meat. Part that was amazing, the neat. Got you there, didn't I? One of my favorite part was definitely the meat, as it was cooked very well, and so tender. Melts in your mouth. Friendly staff here as well. Some of the food also came with instructions depending on the dish. Would r commend dropping in next time for ramen fans. Just .ake sure to find the right time though.

Yelp
Truly, a ramen on its own level. The broth is simply to die for. Extremely smooth yet salt, but not over bearing. Accompanied by beautifully cooked pork, which was so tender, it would literally fall apart. The kombu accompanying was also delicious, as I finished this towards the end of my meal. They have broccoli in it as well, which was tasty. Ambiance is a small and intimate shop, where there is extremely limited seating. Expect long lines from this place! Service was quick and easy. Just said #1, and within a minute of being seated, our food was served. Careful, it's super hot. Burnt my tongue.

Yelp
Japan has a wide variety of ramen flavors that would take a lifetime to try. You want to find one that will suit your taste and this kind of ramen is the one for me and most. It's hard to find this kind of ramen in the US. This is far superior to the big ramen chains in Japan that both start with a I. This shop has long lines except when you go there at 3am. Jet lagged, we took a short drive from Shinjuku and parked on the street behind the shop (secret parking) and barely made it their closing time at 3:30am (not 4am) as their website says. This kind of ramen would make your trip to Japan it's worth.

Yelp
Popular Ramen Restaurant at Tokyo Ikebukuro Street. Young people like it as compare with Ichiran Ramen. However, the Ichiran Noodle is Thin ..but This one Is Round shape Regular Ramen. Totally 2 different style noodle. The Broth is Similar after long time Cook with Tasteful & Flavorful. There Not much difference which love Both of it.... Long Line to wait..... Good To Try...

Yelp
This is one of the ramen places I wanted to try when I was in Tokyo. When I got to the ramen shop, there were about 8 people waiting in the queue which was not bad. The queue moved fairly quickly and I was able to get a seat within 10 minutes. I ordered the mutekiya ramen (#1) that included three large pieces of soft, thick-sliced roast pork, a soft-boiled egg cut in half, bamboo shoots, pea pod stems, and large seaweed slice with a welcome message. Cute! Omg, the roast pork just melted in your mouth! It was so tender and flavorful. I never thought I would say this but Mutekiya is even better than Ichiran(which I am a hardcore fan). The broth was also very milky and flavorful. Loved it! I also got an order of gyoza for Y470 which was also very good. There were five pieces in an order with a side of yuzu kosho. The skin was thin and crispy. Yummy! Mutekiya is just a place to get a quick bite and leave. It's definitely not a place to sit and chit chat for a while. It's a must when you go to Tokyo!

Yelp
This is my favourite ramen place in all of Tokyo! There's always a line waiting outside which snakes around the store. It's pretty small and sits less than 20. I was seated at 14. I've walked past a few times when I stayed at the Prince nearby years ago. Back then, only the Japanese menu was available so I'd order in blind faith asking for #1. And now whenever I visit Tokyo, I'll try to make a trip to Ikebukuro just to have ramen. #1 is now known as Mutekiya ramen and it hits the spot every time. This trip I decided to try the special one pound pork fillet ramen. Pork fillet that's thickly slices, with enough fat and braised long enough to melt in your mouth. Tasty pork broth with the noodles done to perfection with just the right amount of chewiness. Since I skipped lunch today, I almost finished the entire bowl when I came at 615pm.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
Standard, classic, and excellent for the price. The soft boiled egg was cooked to perfection, just the right amount of jelly consistency. The generous heaping of tonkotsu was perfectly tender though just slightly bland for my tastes. Perhaps the flavors of the pork and the broth were so standard that nothing really stood out. The line was super long but very efficient so we only waited about 20 minutes on a busy summer evening.

Ryan P.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing, food was worth the line and wait, as a someone who went to Japan as a foreigner I'd recommend this place to anyone going to Asia first the first time!
google avatar

Sarina J.

Yelp
I came here twice in the five days that I visited Japan. Not being the biggest fan of ramen, that's saying something. There's almost always a wait. The first time I came, I waited 1.5 hour, and was ready to give up until I read the Yelp reviews. Like most people here are saying: SUCK IT UP, IT'S WORTH IT. The second time, I waited 25 minutes. While waiting in line, employees will hand out menus in different languages (#1 for English, #2 for Chinese, #3 in Thai) for you to look over and preorder when you get close to the front. While I never touch ramen living in the US, because it's sodium overload for me, and despite Japan's norm of eating mostly noodle and not finishing the soup, Mutekiya's ramen was PERFECT. The fatty chashu melted in my mouth, and came in huge slices. The noodles soaked up all that brothy goodness. That broth, I still dream about it, super rich but not overload. AND the best part... the soft-boiled egg! OMG that egg is amazing, with a perfectly runny center, yummmm. Definitely add the spicy chilis at your table for an extra kick (beware, add little by little because they pack a punch!) Service is super friendly here, but I wouldn't recommend coming in groups of more than 2. I personally prefer Mutekiya over the famous Ichiran, but definitely no matter which place you prefer, ramen is a must in Tokyo!

Yelp
I showed up here at around 7:30 p.m. worried about just how long I was going to wait because I typically to show up at restaurants around 5 to 5:30 trying to avoid the crowds. That day I really have no idea what I was going to do so I ended up showing up late. The line wrapped around the building. The shop has been frequented by many visitors so they have menus available in up to five languages, which is totally appreciated. I'm sure a couple people away from actually entering the shop the wait staff will come and take your order so you'll immediately receive your ramen once you're seated. For a party of one I was in line for exactly 30 minutes before I got seated. They have both soup ramen and dip ramen and the department also look delicious but overtime I realize that I didn't like it as much as soup ramen so I opted for the signature no.1 ramen and age-ninniku (garlic). Like many other ramen shops in Japan you can add additional noodles at no extra cost. they also have a huge selection of seasonings, liquid and powder. The soup was really rich and the roasted pork was ridiculous - it was so tender and soft that it could even break apart when you pick it up with your chopsticks. The side of age-ninniku, though, really completed the dish giving it a super garlicy taste. If I recall once you're done, you take your check to the front to pay for your food. Curious to try the tsukemen next time because I saw a lot of other patrons order that as well.

Yelp
AMAZING! Everything from the broth, to the noodles, to the atmosphere was extraordinary. I had the #1 choice ramen. So delicious. One of the best I've ever had. First, the broth. Just the right amount of saltiness and pork flavor. I was shocked at how flavorful, yet not too heavy the soup was. Next, the noodles. I love the flat noodle that they use. Juts the right texture and chewiness. Goes perfectly with the broth. The pork was outstanding. Just the right amount of fat, and I love that they blowtorch it to give it a nice, tasty char. Waiting in line for a bowl is totally worth it. And, the prices are more than decent.
google avatar

Yelp
I was taught that ramen actually did not originate from Japan. It came from China. And all this time I thought ramen was a Japanese thing. Ordered: #1- their best seller. I can't even begin to describe how delicious this ramen was. The soup was on point and you didn't need to any any extra seasonings to make it better. Cause in all honesty how can you perfect perfection? The egg was Was perfectly made!! They were very generous with the meat and you can pretty much have a bite of meat to ramen in every slurp. How ideal is that?!? Overall, I would totally recommend coming here for An out of this world ramen! Now I gotta find a place like this in California. Tips: They provide free hand fans for you to cook yourself off. Not ideal for large groups. Indoor seating only. If you go on the weekend expect a really long wait. Not stroller friendly as there is no room to store it. Staff speaks very minimal English. English menu is available. They have a website.

Yelp
O.M.G. That's right, holy crap! I wish this restaurant opens another location in Miami! Or everywhere! That would be amazing! My sister took me to this restaurant because her friend recommended it. We went on a weekday night and waited around 30-45 minutes. Good thing it didn't rain. The hostess gave us Japanese menus automatically. I don't blame her since we ARE Asian, but I was going to ask her for the English menu. Since there were pictures on the menu, that helped a lot. I decided to get #4 because I wanted an egg and something not too crazy. The hostess took our order in the line and when it was our turn to sit inside, we were excited about the food and to see what the hype was about. There were condiments and utensils provided along with garlic press and water. When I got my ramen, I was relieved I didn't order anything else because I would not have been able to finish the food. The broth was AMAZING. The noodles were perfect. This was the first time the staff didn't ask me how I want my noodles. The pork was thick and soft. I chugged everything because it was so good. My sister loves her ramen too. We both agreed that this restaurant is better than the 一蘭 place we went to the day before. Overall, the food was fantastic and mind blowing. The broth had a lot of fats but that's what made the soup so tasty and flavorful. I would DEFINITELY come back again. The food was worth the long wait in line. Best ramen EVER. No regrets.

Yelp
Cash Only Come early to avoid the line Expect a 1.5-2 hour wait after 7pm Great service Condiments, napkins, water available right in front of you Noodles are firm and chewy (hard) Broth is heavy and strong Pork is thick and fatty ------------------------------ What made this place a star short of the 4 is type of ramen I ordered for the night (Mutekiya Ramen #1 on the menu). I would definitely recommend this place for folks that likes really heavy, fatty, and oily ramen. This place is a bit too much for my stomach to handle and definitely put me to sleep afterwards. Overall, a great place for folks that likes heavy meals. Unfortunately, I won't be returning.

Yelp
The first time I came to Japan, I always saw a crazy long line when I passed by it. I wanted to try it but didn't want to waste my time in Tokyo waiting in line for a bowl of ramen. Luck was on my side the second time I visited Tokyo. We only waited about 30 minutes, all thanks to the rain that day. The worker came outside and took our order so when we are seated, we didn't have to wait a long time for our ramen. They sat my friend and I at a two person counter top. They even have a place underneath the table to place your personal items. On the counter, they had fresh garlic that you can pressed yourself and different sauces that you can add to your ramen. We both ordered their most popular ramen which was Mutekiya-Ramen. Probably the best chashu I've ever had. The pork was soft and full of flavor. The ratio of meat to fat was perfect. I really love the broth and adding fresh pressed garlic made it even better. Actually, I highly recommend adding fresh garlic to your ramen both. I now understand why people would wait over an hour to eat here. I would totally come back here again, probably on a rainy day since there would be less people willing to wait in line. The line went pretty fast and service was quick. You really can't beat customer service in Japan. It's top rated!

Yelp
The ommiest nommiest place we ate! I came here on advice from a friend and was not disappointed. The wait is about 30 minutes and i would advise not going in a larger group as you may get broken up. Also, unbeknownst to me all of the ramen bases are pork, so my vegetarian friend ordered plain noodles. I had the Honmaru x ramen- super rich and flavorful. I will dream about these noods
google avatar

Kit C.

Yelp
The best ramen I have ever had in my life LOL. While I heard a lot about wait time, I wasn't bothered at all while I got there on Thursday night at 2am. Soup broth tastes SO rich, melt-in-the mouth chashu make me miss there a lot!!!!! I miss Ikebukuro~~~~~

Yelp
Mutekiya is definitely one of the best ramen my sister and I had in Tokyo. The ramen here is much tastier than the ones sold at the infamous "Ramen Street" (located underground of Tokyo station). Every-time we visit Tokyo, we always eat here. Line is always long, but it is worth the wait. Both locals and tourist line up here because it is DAMNNNN delicious! I love that they have menus in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic & French. We always order their number 1 "Nikutama-Men" which is ramen w/ chashu (roast pork) and flavored egg & the Tsukemen (dipping noodles). The Tsukemen is a must order because it is out of this world, one of the best! The nikutama-men was delicious as well, but the tsukemen was the star. The ramen noodle was nice and al dente, broth was super delicious and savory, and the chashu and egg really complemented the ramen. Cool thing was that the seaweed that comes w/ every ramen order is engraved w/ their mutekiya name (how the heck did they do that?). Cash only, and this place is HIGHLYYYYYYYYYYYY RECOMMENDED!!

Yelp
Waited for 2 hours at around 9 p.m. (haha) but Mutekiya did not disappoint us. We even saw a couple of people that went here with their luggage right after their arrival. The broth is creamy and has a hint of sweetness. All hit the spot; I thoroughly enjoyed slurping it all until there was nothing else. They also provided garlic and spices for free. Since I love garlic, I had to add garlic into my bowl. The service was speedy and friendly as well. We finished everything within 20 mins and left with a smile and full stomachs.

Yelp
I am home in Texas now but chasing Japan. Mutekiya was right around the corner from our AirBnB in Ikebukuro, Tokyo Tiny place open 10:30 - 4am , great system to cut down on the line. They have laid out menus in multiple languages, signs telling you exactly what to do, which is good because they often have a line but it moves quick. Don't dilly dally and don't talk to much - eat your ramen and get out. Ramen isn't really social food and that place is too small to chit chat and not feel bad about the line behind you. I loved the #4 the extra collagen in the broth was oishi! i loved the negityasyu don with luscious pork on rice with green onions - amazing. the concentrated jasmine tea at each station was delicious, too. All the extras options to add to your dish, like garlic or spice are at each seat. eat here super early like when they open or super late to avoid a line

Yelp
Best ramen I had in Tokyo! During my most recent trip to Japan, I stumbled upon Mutekiya. After reading the reviews, I decided that I must give it a try, but needed to plan ahead. Because they open at 10:30am, I showed up at 10am. To my surprise, there were no people in line. At 10:15am, the line was about 15 people deep. By 10:30am, all the people in line were not going to make the first seating because there are only about 15-20 seats inside. During my first visit, I ordered the Mutekiya Ramen that had roast pork, soft-boiled eggs and bamboo shoots. I also ordered gyoza. While in line, before the restaurant even opens, a nice lady comes out with menus in different languages. She lets you study it for 5-10 minutes and will take your order. I really appreciate the efficiency of Japan. By the time you sit down, your bowl of ramen will show up within 5-7 minutes. The ramen broth is so rich and the noodles are the perfect chewy texture. The gyoza come out hot and crispy, the way they were meant to be. I honestly can't say enough positive things about the food here. There is also a garlic press and some raw cloves of garlic so if you so choose, you can add some fresh pressed garlic into your ramen, which is what I did. It was so good that I went back the next morning and did the exact same thing, showed up early to start queuing. The only thing that made my experience not so good was the fact that the foreign tourists, from China and Hong Kong (I know because I speak the language), would have 1 person stand in line while the group did their shopping and would return right before the restaurant opened and cut the line. It wouldn't just be 1 person cutting the line, it would be their entire group, sometimes up to 5+ people. So don't be afraid to speak up and tell them to go to the back of the line. The menus ask people not to cut in line, but what can you expect from these Chinese tourists.

Yelp
I had very high expectations for Mutekiya, given I didn't get a chance to try it before due to long lines, and it easily exceeded all my expectations! Definitely now my favorite ramen restaurant in Tokyo! Located a few blocks south of Ikebukuro station, you'll usually find a decent line of people standing in front of the corner restaurant. The restaurant only seats around 15 people, but ramen is usually a pretty fast food to eat so definitely worth waiting if the line is not too insanely long. I came 15 minutes before opening and waited about 30-40 minutes before being seated. Mutekiya has a set of 12-ish items that you can order. I chose their highly recommended one (#1), the Mutekiya Nikutama Ramen (1100¥). Everything about the ramen was phenomenally good. The tonkotsu broth was incredibly rich and flavorful but not overpowering. The noodles were a little on the thick and soft side, but very springy and soaked up a lot of flavors from the broth. The chashu was unlike any other I've seen: three very thick slices of pork, with a ton of tender pork meat and a little bit of fat on the sides. The pork was lightly charred which had a slightly smoky flavor, which went very well with the ramen broth. The soft-boiled egg was perfectly boiled and the yolk was slightly solid yet oozy. All of which was topped with green onions, bamboo, and vegetables to complete the masterpiece. This was an absolutely unforgettable experience and one of the best ramen bowls I've ever eaten. Huge 5 stars, this is a must-try for ramen lovers!

Yelp
Came at 2am and it was packed! Luckily there was no line and we were seated immediately. We tried the Mutekiya Ramen the Broth was nice and fatty. It was a good bowl of ramen however it didn't really stand out much. A good late night meal!

Yelp
So delicious....worth the wait. Broth was full of taste. Very generous portion. Fast and efficient service as all of Japan seems to be. Highly recommend.

Yelp
While I studied abroad I was very loyal to Yokohama ramen and how thick the noodles and broth were, but this was one of my favorite non-Yokohama style ramens I had. I think the best part of the ramen is quite honestly the chashu, it's more thickly cut than any other place I went to in Japan and it was very flavorful, just a hint of sweetness and just very good taste. I originally wanted the "popular with young people" ramen that sounded more thick and oily (more similar to Yokohama style) but I ended up getting the most popular ramen on the list because I thought I should try their cash cow. It was just enough, I think if it were any more thick or just any heavier I wouldn't have finished. The broth is very flavorful, pork base. When you get there, there's always a line around the corner I think the average wait time is usually an hour or more, and it took about that amount of time for us to get in. It doesn't really matter what time of day, I've seen it with long lines at 11 am, I've seen it with long lines at 3 pm. IT'S WORTH IT THOUGH, at least to try it. I think it ended up being my favorite or second favorite ramen in all my time in Japan. Service is speedy and the turnaround rate for seats is quick as well probably with their efficient system of getting the order well before the customer even gets in the door. They also are very thorough with their condiments with anything from fresh garlic with a garlic smasher, obviously radish and anything else you could possibly want with your ramen. They also have jasmine tea concentrate which you can mix with hot water if you ask them or with cold water. Smart, they don't have to refill as often.

Yelp
With a little more than 10 seats inside the restaurant, you can see why there is a long line. It appears Japan loves their lines. Expect to wait at least 30 minutes for your meal. During peak times, maybe even more. The line will snake outside and when you get close to the door, someone will take your order. There will be signs for you where you should stand so customers do not block the road or other neighboring buildings. I ordered the mutekiya ramen with toppings consisting of eggs, a couple pieces of thick cut charshui, menma (bamboo shoots), green onion, and green vegetables. The soup/stock was rich and creamy and noodles cooked well. The nori also has a welcome message in different languages.. totally safe to eat (double checked with the waitress because we were paranoid). My brother and I loved the jasmine tea pitcher on the side, a concentrated blend of tea where you order hot water from the waitresses and you use to dilute. Too bad we didn't read the instructions about how you need only 1 cm of concentrated tea for our cup of water. I guess just dilute to your liking. They also have a bunch of different items to add to your ramen to make it spicier like the pickles, or raw garlic with a garlic press Note they are cash only, and you just take your order slip to the front when you're done. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
If you are in Japan and didn't eat ramen, you are doing it all wrong, it's like going to America and not eat a burger. This place however is not just any ramen place. This is the filet mignon of ramen except without the expensive price tag. After reading some reviews (3 english ones in total), I realized there's always a line at this place so I've decided to come here at 10:30am in the morning when they open thinking who the heck eats at 10:30am. Apparently a lot of people do. By the time i got there, there was a line of 13-15 people already. The good thing is the line moved relatively quickly and there's even a server on the line to give you a menu and take your order while you wait on line to speed up the waiting process. Btw just fyi the server speak good English and they have an English menu, if all else fails, order the #1 large, it's their most popular item. ( see my pics for more info) The place is not big, around 16 seats bar style. If you have a big party, this is NOT the place to go cause chances are you will not sit together! Also this is not a sit and chat kind of place, it's an eat and go sorta place! Once you sit, you have water in front of you, feel free to add some tea concentrate- not too much. Our food came out in less than 5 mins of sitting- but when we saw it we were like Damnnn this looks good! First bite- soup- OMG this broth is so rich and full of flavor, something I've never had before in the States!! You can tell this took lots of time to make and it didnt taste watery at all! I took three spoonfuls of the broth and then proceeded to the noodles. Noodles- thicker kind of noodle, everything was controlled very well, the timing and texture of it!(almost as if they timed how long it will take you to take your first bite so the noodles aint soggy) It had an awesome chewy texture and taste, and thicker noodles means it can absorb a lot more broth with every bite! Meat- of course the traditional Char-siu pork but they were the perfect pieces of Char-siu with some fat along the top and marbled meat on bottom, super moist and flavorful with or without the broth. They ain't stingy with their pork neither, you get 3 pieces of pork and instead of being paper thin, they were at least 1/2 inches thick. I've never seen that before ever and I don't think I ever will! Egg- traditional egg with deep orange-ish yolky center, well executed, try it with with some broth and let them fuse together to create a party for your mouth! Portion- The large is actually quite large (this coming from a person who can down two bowls regularly) so small eaters should stick to the regular size. Cost- around 13 USD per person, with most US ramen places charging you 15 or more a bowl, this is super affordable. Fyi- not sure if this place is cash only but bring cash just in case! Overall- Can't say enough good things about this place, the service, the food and the FOOD! Talking great affordable food this place is it and talking about great ramen in Japan, this is probably close to one of the best if not the best!! Now only if the line aint so crazy!!!!

Yelp
It was pouring rain out when me and a few friends went to eat here. Even with all the rain, there was still a wait. Was it worth it?? Definitely. Long wait, but it was just so amazing. As usual, the staff here as all over japan, have been very nice and pleasant. I got the #1 option. Can't go wrong with their recommended. The soup was rich and flavorful. The noodles were thick and delicious. The only knock from me is the chasu, but it was because it was very thick. O prefer my chasu to be thin and easier to eat, but that is just preference. It still tasted delicious.

Yelp
This is a ramen shop that you must try. I would spend hours waiting in line just for their ramen. I have ordered the house ramen. The pork was cooked perfectly. It so tender that it melts in your mouth. Flavour was awesome and not overpowering. The fatty part of pork doesn't taste fat at all. Broth was rich and creamy but not too greasy and salty. Ramen were cook perfected. Last but not least the egg were cooked partially cook. The egg white were infused with the marination and can still taste the soy and sugar. Runny golden egg yolk mixed with the ramen with rich broth. My mouth is watery now just thinking about it.

Yelp
Great ramen, but very rich. Their pork is delicious! Expect to wait in line for a while to get in, but it was worth it for a nice lunch experience.

Yelp
It is hot and humid today. Waiting in line outside the restaurant for 20 min, the server brought out the menu in different languages. I ordered the smaller version of the #1 ramen. My standard of ramen has gone up a level. Must try!

Yelp
5 stars for taste and price. But about an hour's wait until I got my ramen, that's crazy. I think there's much more tourists eating here than locals. I got on line at 4 pm on a Saturday afternoon and the line wasn't super long. I wasn't starving yet thankfully (definitely do not line up if you need to eat asap, otherwise go for it) They take your order when you get closer to the entrance and they have the menu in different languages which they hand you then too. Inside the store is a stool setting so not much space and only sits I'm guessing about max 20 ppl. I went with the No. 1 Mutekiya Ramen (btw there's a lot of pictures on the menu so no worries, very foreigner-friendly :) I choose Medium serving size although I wonder if a large serving would have cost more cause I think a large would have been perfect for my appetite then. They offer more noodles for free btw. I was just right full though! Of the ramen shops I've had so far in Tokyo, this is definitely one I recommend and is not a let down. Definitely would come back to try out other stuff on the menu; just not on a hungry stomach! Btw cash only place as expected from many restaurants in Japan.

Yelp
Mutekiya serve a very rich broth ramen. I suggest original Mutekiya ramen, since it taste very subtle and smooth. Try mixing the spicy pickle into the soup, it will give another umami taste. Gyoza taste good, but not the best one. Their tsukemen also taste good. Be prepared to wait in line for at least 1 hour.

Yelp
Outrageous bowl of extra porky ramen. Thicccc gravy-like broth, thick slice of pork, thick noodles, and thick menma. Porklife. Worth trying if your're in the area.

Yelp
My family and I decided to checkout this place after hearing a lot of positive reviews from friends and the web. Arriving at around 6pm on a Tuesday, the line was long, but not overwhelming. There were probably around 10-14 people ahead of us, but in ramen shops, seat rotation is quick. During the wait, I can't help but notice how fascinating the restaurant sign meant. Knowing a bit of Chinese (some characters in Chinese are the very similar in Japan), the sign is read "Unbeatable Family". That name is straight up SOLID. It took us around 30 minutes to get to our seats. Near the front, a friendly waiter greeted us and provided my family and I with the "English" menu. Most restaurants only serve Japanese menus and that's when you know this is potentially a place for tourists. Time to try out the delicious ramen! Upon entering the restaurant, I noticed how small the atmosphere was inside. Roughly 15 seats I would say. Seated, there was an array of spices. When I was given my bowl of ramen, I just added in my favorite ingredient, garlic. I ordered the "Mutekiya Ramen", which is their most popular. From just glancing at the bowl, I was instantly attracted: big portions, steamy soup broth, perfectly cooked soft-boiled eggs. First taste in the broth, the flavor wasn't as impactful, but was no doubt rich, warm and satisfying. Even though the day I tried out this place was hot, I've expect the place to generate a nice-cozy feeling on cold winter night. Texture of the noodles and pork were prepared not too hard, but not too soft. Just alright. Best part is definitely the eggs. The egg yolks' partially liquid content contrasted deliciously with the broth. I'm down to get more of those. Overall, the experience was thrilling and I will definitely come again next time I visit Japan. Restaurant design, food, and of course the Japanese hospitality really invites many first-time customers, regulars, tourists. Mutekiya is truly the "Unbeatable Family"!

Yelp
I don't claim to be an expert on ramen but this place deserves all the stars it can get. I got it by googling "best ramen tokyo" and I wasn't disappointed. You do have to stand in line for a good 40min but it's totally worth it. The food came quickly after we were seated and it was excellent. Definitely would recommend it 100%
