Took me an absurd amount of time to visit Menya, the Kirkland location really helped. I was pretty impressed. Despite hearing a lot of great things about this "local" chain, my expectations were surpassed. I say local because I do believe they're from Japan or have locations in Japan, but have a few branches in Washington.
There isn't a ton of seating, but probably seven tables with two chairs each (tables can be moved and combined easily) and then some counter seats facing the walls. Ample parking in a plaza. One tablet to order from inside. Great selection of classic ramen, vegan ramen, tsukemen, some donburi, and sides! Loved the hybrid ramen (and I'd imagine I'd love the black ramen in particular). Partner got the spicy miso and I honestly did not care for it, probably because my taste buds were overwhelmed by the hybrid ramen broth.
Hybrid Ramen - mix of black and red meaning black garlic oil and spicy broth which was super flavorful. Fatty, rich, creamy, and umami. The individual pork belly across ramens is fatty and tasty, but it is a thicker cut than usual, so a bit chewier and maybe slightly tougher. They also provided a generous amount of spinach, wood ear mushrooms, and bean sprouts. Delicious noodles too, great slurping potential and soaked up the broth just right.
Chicken Nanban - six pieces of tasty, juicy, delicious chicken karaage under some sort of thick tartar egg salad (like potato salad) with curry powder on top. Honestly I was impressed by the karaage alone and would be happy to order it. The thick tartar egg salad was tasty but the chicken was definitely the star of the show.
