"Over in Williamsburg, a yerba mate bar called Porteñas will begin serving the earthy drink — commonly found in Argentina as well as the south of Brazil — alongside empanadas and other yerba mate-infused pastries this weekend. The cafe opens Saturday at 557 Lorimer St., between Devoe Street and Metropolitan Avenue." - Carla Vianna

Lovely place, great design aesthetic and loved the compostable cups and lids. I tried the tropical and my friend tried the traditional Yerba mate which has a leafy taste. I recommend adding honey. I loved the cute pastries and will definitely be back for them!

It’s gloomy and moody out on this lazy Sunday, but walking into this establishment is like a piece of comforting sunshine. I took a lot of photos and I hope they speak for themselves. Everything looks extremely delicious and made from high-quality ingredients. The layout and styling are so well considered. The owner, or the person who I think is the owner, is super sweet and helpful. The place is packed even though it’s tiny. I don’t blame people for wanting to hang out here.

Cute little “Mate” place in Williamsburg. From the store design to the exquisite “homemade” style empanadas and desserts everything looks carefully thought and made with love. 5 stars to my Argentinian fellows!!!

A cute little place in the neighborhood! Had a dinner special (2 empanadas, a drink and a dessert) and it was very delicious. The owner was very helpful and patient through all our questions - will definitely visit again!

I really wanted to love this place but I had such a bad experience there. Firstly, the “empanadas” are tiny at $4.50 each and one of them (the mushroom vegetarian one) isn’t even an actual empanada—it’s just a regular pie. I also got 2 vegan/vegetarian and one meat one for a friend and the cashier didn’t tell me which was the meat one, which is pretty standard at places that sell vegan items. They also placed the hot empanadas in the flimsiest of bags, so on my walk the bag split and one of them fell to the ground. And finally—they had a deal where it was buy 3 get a free tea or coffee. I opted for the tea, and the lid wouldn’t go on the cup no matter how hard we tried to put it on. I said it was okay and that I would be careful, but when the pastry bag ripped I stumbled and poured piping hot tea over myself.

Love this place. Small, quaint mate bar owned by an Argentine lesbian couple who are experts in making delicious mate drinks and empanadas. Highly recommend the Greenpoint empanada and the Ginger Mint Lemonade. Everything is made in house.

I love their delicious baked empanadas. One thousand percent better than any fried empanada
