The 21 Best Restaurants in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca | Eater
"The Mercado Benito Juárez is a space where aromas, flavors, and cultures converge. Here you can have a taste of traditional Mexican cuisine, as you can find tlayudas, tamales, atole, enchiladas, jerky, nopal salad, chaya water, and other products of the region, which makes it the best grocery option in Puerto Escondido. It’s a delight to walk through its aisles, especially on what are called “días de plaza” (square days), Saturdays and Sundays, when all the people from neighboring communities come down and bring their local harvest: coffee, pumpkin sweets, all kind of vegetables, and a great variety of products that is usually not found during the week, such as free-range eggs and turkeys. 8 Best Styles of Tamales to Try in Oaxaca, Mexico | Eater
"Vibrant market stalls in Puerto Escondido sell luxurious tamales de tichinda — mussel-filled tamales steamed in dried corn husks made by blending masa with a spicy adobo and adding mussels in their shells so they open as they cook. The soft, flaky tamal punctuated by briny, opened mussels is a quintessential afromexicano Costa Chica specialty and a seafood lover’s dream; sampling many of them is presented as an essential regional experience." - Bill Esparza
Great selection of everything. I think it would be better to visit in the morning. We were there about 4:30pm it closes at 7 pm. But it wasn't crowded, took our time to enjoy the experience.

Absolutely the best market I have been to in any country. The place is huge with everything divided into sections. Flowers, fruit/vegetables,Meat, cheese, fish, bakery, spices, and souvenirs. It also had about 50 stalls to eat food. Found some unusual items. A pigs head and a 30lb bags of Cheetos. ( cheecho's )

In most large markets in Mexico you'll find the following:
If the stall is particularly well-organized and is not priced it's probably a little more expensive. Mexicans often don't price their items sol be aware of this and check every single thing they rack up. Especially if you're not Mexican. If it's on a corner or near the door expect higher prices.
The best deals are almost always the farmers that are hauling their stuff in for the day or weekend and they're on a time constraint. If you're a foreigner it's best not to ask the price as you often get a foreigner price. Rather get to know the prices and then ask them if it's a little bit lower than what you've heard and they can just say yes or no. It puts you in a stronger bargaining position. Always be smiling and cheerful when bargaining. If you get a good price show your appreciation. The best prices are almost always at the end of the day especially for ripe fruit. Look for sellers that package or group things together - with prices of course. These are sellers that really want to move their products. Most anyone that is selling at a low price will advertise it with a price.
The Bodega Aurrera and Chedraui are often excellent sources for avocados and meats, plus they often have excellent sales from time to time that often are only for one day. Bookmark their websites.
Also look for sellers outside main markets that just spread their stuff out on the sidewalk. Don't expect pricing but often they have excellent prices.

Decent sized market offering everything from clothing to housewares to food to souvenirs. There is also a large selection of restaurants. Prices are reasonable. Plenty of parking when we arrived on a late Thursday morning.

Great market. The best comedor is Comedor Reyna, which is always very busy, serves freshly prepared mexican food at very good prices.

A good time filler when in the town centre.
Had multiple sections from food/ stalls at the far end to flowers, clothes, fresh meat and fresh veg.
There is also a section for souvenirs and even toilets if required.
Some mural art but limited amounts.
Nice for a look around.

Visited Puerto for a little while over the holidays and I have to say; the vendors are quite competitive but the freshly made food, fresh sweet bread and fresh fruit waters are such a Delicious reason as why to go visit.

Yelp
I love markets like this. There was a variety of clothing, a few food stalls, and plenty of souvenirs. My hubby bought some sandals, and we also got chocolate and and mole to bring back home.
There was a particular food stall that we stopped by at for lunch. We each ordered our own fried fish, a gringa, and some thing else I don't remember the name of. The fish was very tasty and crunchy! It came with a small side salad and some white rice. The only problem was that we had to keep shooing the files away.

Yelp
This is THE outdoor shopping Mecca in Puerto Escondido.
If you want to spend the day walking about the market haggling for everything & anything this is the place!
The best way is to spend the whole day. When you get done shopping, stop in the open food court to have some of the best local foods like chicken & rice or tacos.
YOLO, hang with the locals on a communal table and/or just people watch. You will be surprised how much you will laugh & what you can learn ;)
Then, mozy on over to the bakery isle & have the best tres leches cake, aka, pan tres leches you have ever had in your life.
Highly highly recommend.

Yelp
For an authentic market in Puerto Escondido, this is the place to go to. We've been shopping at Mercado Benito Juarez for over twenty years whenever we find ourselves in Puerto Escondido. They have an assortment of shops - clothing, shoes, souvenirs, and casual restaurants. If you don't want sugar overload in your fruit drink, ask any of the restaurants to put less sugar in their aqua frescas.
I personally won't bother to bargain since the prices of their garments are much lower than other places in Puerto Escondido. We have found lovely cotton dresses for our daughter, which she loves to wear daily and a traditional dress I continue to get compliments on at home.
We have eaten at many of the places in this market and while we ask for no ice, we have never gotten sick. The food has always been safe for us to eat - including the fish.
