On the Grid : Mercantile

"The hunt for the perfect coffee shop landed us at Mercantile and you can find us here working on our computers all the time. In the spirit of On the Grid we are sharing our spot, despite some hesitation. However, keep in mind that we will get cranky if our choice table is filled. After you finish your coffee and your work, ask our barista-turned-friend Jonathan for his recommendation of which beer to snag on your way out. They often host wine tastings as well, so lookout for that." - Curiosity and Curiosities

Houston’s 14 Best Coffee Shops For Getting Work Done

"This spacious Montrose coffee shop is a calming spot to read and work. The soft, unintrusive indie music creates a low-key ambience, with enough room between seating areas to give patrons ample personal space. When you get the munchies, step outside to order tacos from the El Rojos food truck." - Alex Vickery

Google
We were looking for a place to relax for a bit and we found this place. It's a little out of the main road and I never really noticed it before but the inside was really a vibe. There were a lot of places to sit and an area with some reading stuff but the interesting part was that it had instruments, piano and drum set, a swing and a pink table like area. The coffee was good too.

Google
Took this one to go, and it was absolutely worth it. The mocha is rich and smooth without being overly sweet, and the spice? Just enough heat to make things interesting. It’s a slow build — a little cinnamon warmth and a subtle chili kick that lingers in the best way. Definitely not your average flavored coffee. The flat white base keeps it bold and balanced. The espresso shines through, creamy milk smooths it out. Great texture, great flavor. If you like your coffee strong with a twist, this is it. Perfect for a morning pick-me-up when you want something different but still grounded.

Google
The $3.50 kolaches are a good asset for this cafe right now. Fairly priced, well made bread that is springy but robust, fine sausage. The egg wash adds a nice caramel tone to the finish. Speaking of caramel, I ordered a caramel latte, hot, large with four shots (the standard). What I found was a drink that wasn’t offensively sweet but not especially bold. I’m not sure I’d describe it as watery, but could be stronger. The atmosphere of the shoppe is fine, a little stinky inside, but most Houston establishments are. The volume was appropriate, and the location is nice with large oaks on the street. I come here infrequently but maybe they have more to offer than some cafes nearby.

Google
Unfortunately didn't try the food but the good was pretty good. Staff was super friendly. Love the vibe of the place. Quite ample with plenty of seating .Live music Monday from 7-9pm. Plenty of parking available when I went early morning but it doesn't seem like they have a ton of parking available.

Google
I don’t usually write reviews, but I feel like people need to be warned. I used to love this place — the cozy vibe, the coffee, the friendly staff — but something has seriously changed. The last couple of times I’ve been in, the owner has been shockingly rude. No smile, no greeting, just a cold stare and a snappy attitude like I was inconveniencing them by simply ordering a drink. The barista seemed stressed out and disinterested, and the service was incredibly slow even though the shop was nearly empty. When my coffee finally came, it tasted nothing like it used to. Bitter, watery, and honestly, something I could've made better at home. It feels like the passion is gone, replaced by hostility and indifference. I left feeling more tense than when I walked in — and that’s saying something, considering I came for coffee and a bit of calm. Sad to see a place with so much potential fall apart like this. I won’t be coming back.

Google
Such a nice spot that really feels like a part of the houston community! Coffee was good and there’s a lot of spaces to sit and work or chat including larger tables and couches. Bring a sweater though because it was chilly inside

Google
Charming coffee shop in the Montrose area - the barista is very friendly and did a great job despite the extreme influx of customers (busy Saturday) There was a local chess club meetup so seating was limited. The ship has wifi and good amount of plugs. The seats weren’t the most comfy but the overall vibe is relaxed.

Rejoice Akpudo

Google
Great vibe and the drinks are awesome, but there could be more plugs! Also the tables at the windows are high, but there’s only one high bench there, making the tables unusable if you want to go there and work. But the rest of the seating is awesome!

Yelp
This is my choice of local coffee shop when I want to get out of the house during the week or drop by for a pre-grocery shopping coffee. Everyone is genuinely so nice and you can tell. Quick, efficient, no frills. Good coffee. I sit and work here often, and watch the interactions between the baristas and customers. They sometimes have their regulars orders ready as they see them walking up. Ya love to see it It gets chilly though so bring a sweater hehe

Yelp
Disclaimer: I'm on a hunt for the best cafe to work from as I'm working remote. My review is based on factors for a good place to work from and not necessarily the coffee or food. Overall okay cafe for work. Noise level - 60db quiet conversation Wifi speed - 1 down 1 up :( Power plugs - more than 10 Seats - 30 indoors Parking - free 10 lots The baristas were very friendly, they will greet you when you enter and leave. They made my day honestly. My coffee came within 5 minutes and was an oat milk flat white. They don't charge extra for oat milk! The place has soft background music and really nice for me to concentrate on my work or to read. The place is spacious, clean, bright and the temperature is kept cool. The bathroom even has a huge world map. The place is also dog friendly - they even offer free dog treats. However the reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because this place has really limited wifi. My browser was struggling to load and definitely no video calls here. I had to work off of my own mobile internet connection at some point. I really enjoyed myself here and will come back for the coffee, ambiance and relax when I'm not relying on the internet.

Yelp
Needed a place to read for a couple of hours between errands. Came in on a Friday around 10. No line. Service was so friendly. Loved all the baristas. I could see why folks would appreciate this as their neighborhood coffee shop. I splurged on an almond croissant. Omg. It was so good. So worth the thousand or more calories. I ate every last bite. People brought their pups in which I loved but others may not. The couch I snagged was comfortable and I enjoyed relaxing and looking out the window. Oh. And the coffee I chose was divine too!

Yelp
I love this place Nested in a little community The coffee is good Service is lovely The vibe is fantastic I love it sooo much

Yelp
Cool little place to hangout. However, I got some coffee that tasted sour as if the milk used in it was far past expiration. It tasted terrible and I threw it out. There are plenty of much better coffee shops around the area. Don't waste your time or money here
google avatar

Yelp
This is where you'll find me most mornings during the week before going to work. It's my go to spot if I am getting a latte. Like most coffee shops they have a variety of options for milk substitutes. If you're lucky enough to arrive early you can get tacos that they get from taco deli. In addition to other coffees, they have a large selection of teas. Several pastries are available at the counter. But once they run out, they run out. Perfect neighborhood coffeeshop that hosts live music nights and other things throughout the month.

Yelp
I LOVE this place. It is decorated in kind of an artsy, but minimal way it's a great vibe. It's a lot quieter in here too, so it's really great for studying and cranking some work done. Their coffee is so good, and the croissants are great as well! The cost is MUCH better too than many of the other houston coffee shops (that are way overpriced). As far as the service goes, everyone is so kind. Graham is so nice too, and always remembers us which is so kind! We love this place! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Good location, excellent study/working spot, lots of parking, quirky interior design (in a good way). The shop is nice and quiet. Lots of seating area. Their wife is strong and they have good wall outlets. Iced matcha ($5.5): it's good to note that it comes sweetened, but it's a solid matcha and I would get it again.

Yelp
this place has a wonderful atmosphere with a lovely, welcoming barista. it's tucked away in Montrose, feeling hidden in some way. The barista was the sweetest ever. I wish I got her name so I could shout her out. I loved the atmosphere of this place, with their books and decorations. The coffee I had, while good, was nothing really spectacular. But, the kind customer service made it for me. I had a iced vanilla latte with oatmilk. Again, nothing terribly special, (I'm partial to richer espresso blends, and this one didn't have much dimension). It has a bit of an aftertaste. I wouldn't come for the coffee necessarily, rather for the vibes. The coffee is just a plus. If the barista who served me sees this, you were tall with long hair and I came on Thursday 12/14 around 7:30 am, keep doing what you do :) you made my day!

Yelp
Nice coffee shop in the Montrose area that has a similar look and feel as Black Hole located several blocks away. Plenty of tables and chairs for seating (though I do wonder who ever uses the indoor swing). Standard coffee and tea menu on offer with a selection of various pastries as well. The space has an artsy feel to it, and I appreciated the style of the barista who was wearing a "Montrose" cap but in the colors, lettering, and style of Marlboro cigarettes. Additionally, I enjoyed the huge world map on the wall of the bathroom (what better place to contemplate one's next international trip than while on the john?). Service was quick, coffee was good, and the place proved to be a quiet place to get some work done. My only hangups with Mercantile are that it was actually a bit too quiet for my liking. I like there to be a bit of background music and a light din of conversation, but things were almost completely silent here like a library. Along with that, the space felt a bit cold and warehouse-like without the cozy vibe that I prefer when at a coffee shop to get some work or studying done. Regardless, I still enjoyed the spot overall and will add it to my list of coffee shops for Montrose.

Yelp
Nice coffee shop in the Montrose area with petty decent parking. Great atmosphere for working, studying, or just hanging out over coffee. Great staff and a variety of drinks on the menu!

Yelp
So I'm back! And the place is better than ever, even busier too, which congrats to the Mercantile folks for that. I got the London Fog; Earl Grey, steamed milk, and vanilla syrup. Yall, it is so damn good, SO GOOD! The gentleman who made it a great job and was very polite; as was the young lady who rang me up, very nice. The atmosphere is a bit different from my last time here, but still good and welcoming. The music they're playing right is awesome, random I know but I'm jamming to it, lol. Spoke to the staff about what's going on with Mercantile. They tell me they are really focusing on the coffee, and that seems to be paying off. Their food options are a bit light, but I imagine that's by design. Anyways, it was great, good to be back in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Got a cold brew with oat milk (just a splash) and this is what it looked like after the 10 minute drive home. Also, it tasted burnt

Yelp
Mercantile is a solid spot in the montrose area for your coffee needs! their coffee tastes great, is not insanely priced, and they have so much seating inside! The baristas are really nice! mercantile is a great place to meet up with friends or sit at the community table to get some work done. only complaints are the wifi was spotty and they charge extra for alt milk :/ overall, would recommend mercantile if you're looking for a coffee shop in montrose

George C.

Yelp
This was conveniently located near Rice University. The hospitality was great! When I arrived there was a single person working the coffee house. She was so pleasant helpful and cheerful. She recommended a cold vanilla cinnamon latte which was perfect. She was professional and cheerful to all the customers during my stay at the coffee house. She individually greeted all the customers when they came in in a pleasant non invasive friendly sort of way. I often wondered what sort of happy juice she was taking and secretly hoped it was in the coffee that was served. Sadly that was not the case. The ambience is super cool. There were people studying. People just hanging out. There was a Go meet up and people were playing competitively. I really liked this place. I wish there were more like it in Houston. I would go again and again.
google avatar

Levi P.

Yelp
I had a meeting near Mercantile and decided to give it a try. Glad I did! The spot is cozy and Corby was so attentive. Gave the vanilla spice a shot and it didn't disappoint--smooth with just the right kick. Planning my next coffee break there already!
google avatar

Amy V.

Yelp
Went to do laundry next door so decided to pop in and check it out. It's a little pricey but it's not surprising since it's such a chic vibe with artsy things all around and on top of that being in a nice neighborhood. I got the ham and cheese croissant and was not disappointed. Delicious 10/10 and really chill vibe overall.
google avatar

Gene L.

Yelp
Good vibes all around at this coffee shop. Quintessential neighborhood shop. People who come here seem to know each other, eclectic and diverse crowd, many who probably live closeby. Staff is extremely friendly and nice. Plentiful seats whether you want to lounge, get work done, or study. I like the coffee here better than Black Hole, seems like a little less crowded too. Sometimes I find this as my backup choice when others like Blacksmith, Siphon, Black Hole are too busy, but I'm usually so satisfied at Mercantile I don't know why I just don't come here as a primary option. I think I will from now on, though!
google avatar

Karina N.

Yelp
Good coffee, good ambience. Also, there is live music in the evenings at 7pm on Mondays. Super cool!
google avatar

B G.

Yelp
If you want to pay $7 for iced coffee with spoiled soy milk this is the go-to so much for buying local
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
If you think other chain coffee places are slow. You're in for a new definition. First time at this place. And it's not a place to go if your looking to grab something and go. There was one person working. This place needs at least 3 people to function as a legitimate coffee shop. The only person working there was Slowly making drinks/food/etc. and then will stop making a drink take several orders at the iPad register. Then go back to the unfinished drink from 5min before and then finish that drink. Overall not good. Had to walk out without my $5 drink because it was just taking too much time.

Tina P.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop similar vibes to Black Hole except not too packed! This is a great spot to study and get work stuff done. The baristas are so sweet and service is great. I didn't get time to try any pastries not sure if there was but next time! Make sure to check out the left side of the coffee shop as there are more seats on that side too.
google avatar

Alberto M.

Yelp
Scared to say it's one of my new favorite coffee shops because I don't want it to start to get crowded, but it's just so great! It's very chill. Think Black Hole and Campesino had an artsy but mellow child. There's plenty of seating: outside is great for chatting, small tables for working alone with some table space, a few tall window tables, and my favorite which is a giant table that fits at least 10. The inside is a tiny bit quieter than most coffee shops I've been to but not like excessive pressure to talk quietly. I think what draws me to Mercantile is really just the chill vibes I get when visiting since it's a little separated from most of the other Houston hot spots. The coffee is pretty good but I tend to go for just the classic drinks. I would recommend the spicy coffee (it has cayenne pepper in it!)
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
Love this quirky spot! The staff is very friendly and love talking to the patrons; it really makes you feel welcome! The inside is spacious, but it could use a tad more seating. They have a fun section in the back corner that is themed like a backyard, complete with AstroTurf and a swing! The coffee here is great - I got the flat white and loved it. There is a small lot out front. I came just before 9am on a Saturday and there were no issues finding a spot.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
I like this coffeeshop because maybe it's close by but also because it's such a chill spot and great coffee! If they get your order wrong or if it's not suitable for your taste then they will make it so you enjoy it comfortably! They have nice seating with lots of distancing for people wanting to come in to study or do some work. The only thing I dislike are the people or whomever that vandalises the wall outside, maybe, the business will get cameras to catch the perpetrators ruining the walls outside. Or maybe the business can get a artist to paint a nice mural so that hopefully graffiti artists will stop! Overall a great coffeeshop and great staff and quiet with some relaxing music!
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Giving this a 3/5 strictly for the coffee, it was okay. The vibes were great! The service was great!
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
Had a matcha latte here that I thought was pretty solid. The place is pretty large too so it's probably a good place for working/studying. It's also next to a laundromat so if you're doing laundry this would be a great place to kill time. Some real symbiosis there!
google avatar

Jamie T.

Yelp
I've been going here for a while so I feel like I have a pretty good gauge of the place now. It's a good place for relaxing/having a good conversation/light reading so probably a 5/5 for me on that aspect. For studying, I'll give it a 3/5 only because it can get loud sometimes and finding a plug can be a struggle. There's also a lot of light and glare coming through the windows at certain times of day and if you're sitting at the places with plugs, you better bring some sunscreen and sunglasses. The coffee isn't bad but it also isn't special either. I've tried the Matcha Latte, vanilla latte, the espresso, and even the iced tea. 3/5! It's cool that they sell their own beans as well as have art on the wall! It sets the vibe of the place nicely. And the place is tidy (including bathroom for the emergency coffee poops :D) so 5/5! The main parking is small but there is a lot of street parking!
google avatar

Thomas R.

Yelp
This place is right down the street from my home. There are plenty of coffee shops in the area but this one is my favorite. The croissants are fresh and the people working there are very sweet! Also a good place to end a run since they have water while you wait for the delicious coffee.

Lebija B.

Yelp
Love this place. Great neighborhood coffee shop. The younger guy with the curly hair behind the counter is not always super nice. I don't think I have ever seen him smile, ever. That has definitely curbed my daily visits there as his energy is bad.
google avatar

Debra O.

Yelp
I walked in and the pastry case had crumbs and smears. I looked around and after a few minutes a person came to take my order. I ordered a oat milk latte to drink there and a chocolate croissant to eat there heated. She put my drink in a plastic cup. Ok. I stood and waited for around 7 minutes for my pastry. After I had finished my drink she asked me if she could help me. I said yes I am waiting for my croissant. She looked at the other girl and said did she order a croissant? Yes. By that time is was burned. She said it was not burned but it was. I looked inside and the chocolate was burned as was the outside. Too many other coffee shops to bother with this place.
google avatar

Mo M.

Yelp
This place satisfied all my requirements of studying: 1. Soft sofa makes me feel comfortable even sit down for long time. They also have many other kinds of seats which could satisfy you. 2. Outlets & WiFi are reliable. 3. Pretty quiet! 4. Not cold \(*TT*)/ 5. Flat white is a must try! 6. Parking lot is small. If you could arrive earlier just like before noon, you could get one. Or you could find street parking. 7. Long opening hours (´。* *。`) .
google avatar

Woo K.

Yelp
It's a small cute place. It has a swing!!! Didn't ask if I could actually swing on it yet. I definitely should have. But the coffee isn't bad. Looks like a typical hipster coffee shop. The only issue I have is that they need more seats. Other than that. Not bad.
google avatar

LJ C.

Yelp
Mercantile is, as always, a great place to get coffee and do some work, but the Sunday afternoon server just tried to sell me a pre-packaged chocolate chip cookie for $9. NINE DOLLARS, for a cookie??!! I told her I'd had plenty of chocolate chip cookies from here before - the same prepackaged type that lurk by the register - and if I recall correctly, they were usually around $3, but this time I was told "That's how much they've always been since I've been here." I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that this coffee shop - ANY coffee shop, outside of maybe the one at Neiman Marcus or Saks Fifth Avenue (does Tiffany's have a coffee shop?) sells a chocolate chip cookie for NINE FREAKIN' AMERICAN DOLLARS. Down two stars for the bizarre service encounter.
google avatar

Pathik S.

Yelp
Jazz on Tuesday night. Starts at 7-9. Amazing music and a great vibe. Coming back for sure.
google avatar

Alexandra N.

Yelp
Chai Latte($4.50) I am not a big coffee drinker so I always settle with a good chai. Mercantile's chai latte is for those who love a spicy jump start to their morning. A good amount of sweetness and the temperature was great! No latte art but they sprinkled some cinnamon on top. I love the environment that this cafe offered. Big open space with a sufficient amount of ports. Big windows that provide GREAT natural lighting. And a cute little swing! Parking was sufficient but tight. The only little detail is that it was a little too quiet even with music playing. So it is very easy to listen into conversations.

Tommy P.

Yelp
Wonderful coffee and great baristas. But everything on this wifi is blocked: Etsy, Pinterest, Twitter. So if your job is to create content, you can't get any work done here. And VPNs are blocked. So frustrating. A waste of a trip!
google avatar

Reese N.

Yelp
The cafe latte is very solid and the ambience is great. It was during the quarantine stuff so it is not what it most likely normally is. However, it's clear that the place is a great spot for coffee and reading a book or catching up with a friend.
google avatar

Nan C.

Yelp
Awesome coffee! I ordered a Cafe Miel which is a honey and cinnamon latte. Stacey, the barista, served me with a great smile and went the extra mile with her outstanding service. It was by far one of the smoothest lattes I've ever had. And I've certainly had my share. The menu was great. The place was very spacious and very much to my liking - love the art, books, and the white picket fence. The latte was absolutely delicious!! Thanks, Stacey!!!!
google avatar

Mat T.

Yelp
I know places are being cautious about opening again but I appreciate the spots that are willing to. Mercantile is practicing safe distancing with limiting their seating inside and out. They use Boomtown coffee and Taco Deli tacos. What's not to like about that? I will definitely be coming her again.
google avatar

Dina M.

Yelp
Tucked away in a neighborhood with limited parking . Don't let that deter you from trying it out. It's quiet and has good space . You can either sit indoors or outside . Good coffee and pastries .
google avatar

Kristin W.

Yelp
Recently started coming here for my daily fix. Not only is the coffee delicious, I have gotten to know the owner and staff and they are wonderful! Mel is a sweetheart and starts my order as soon as she sees me walk in. She's always very friendly. I have lived in this neighborhood for 20 years and am so glad to have a comfortable local spot with great offerings and great service. Love Mercantile!
google avatar

Jonathan D.

Yelp
As a student, I'm always trying to find new places to study around the area. There are so many coffee places around the Med Center, all with pros and cons, but none are perfect in my opinion. Mercantile is probably the closest to a perfect coffee and study spot for me so far. Walking in to Mercantile: it's nice and open, clean, with a very relaxed vibe. The speakers gently play some lo-fi beats, and I already feel at home. There are a nice selection of benches and tables well spread out; everyone can find a space for themselves here. They have extension cords and power strips spread throughout the place, so getting a charge isn't usually an issue. WiFi's pretty decent as well, never a bad thing. I ordered my standard cold brew. I've definitely had better ones, but I've also had much worse. Not the strongest aroma, but definitely smooth, easy to sip on, and enough caffeine to keep me going till closing time, and at $3.50, it's cheaper than Starbucks for better quality. Definitely will be coming back again. This place is a good study spot.

Yelp
The coffee: I just didn't like my drink. It was creamy, which was nice, but it had a sharp and bitter taste, and just tasted very beany. A packet of brown sugar mellowed it out, but it still wasn't the best. Maybe if there wasn't such amazing competition, I would feel differently, but the problem is there are just places that have coffee that better fits my tastes. The shop: It seems a bit confused. There's no real central theme. One corner is set up for like a backyard picnic, complete with fake grass. Another like a waiting room. None of the tables or chairs match in any way really. I do like some aspects of it like the neon sign and the art and the hanging swing, but it just feels all over the place. There's also a lot of empty space in the middle. Some if the couches and tables are just kind of old and dirty. There powerstrips along the walls if you feel like doing work, so points there. I also like how they accept NFC payments and have a rewards system. The service: Friendly. They were pretty nice, and cleaned up the table we sat at when they saw how messy it was from previous customers. Overall: Though I didn't really like my coffee that much, there's nothing really bad about this place. It just doesn't win me over.

Yelp
I like this place, it's been around for a long time. Love the location in the middle of the neighborhood and next to a laundromat. They stopped using reusable cups though, so all the pictures you see no longer apply. They only serve in to go cups.
google avatar

Paloma A.

Yelp
This coffee shop is a little hidden, right next a laundromat. Stopped by and first impression was "wow there's a lot of people in here" mostly they were all study groups. Cool now let's order, I decided to get a caramel latte. There was only one barista at the time and she took the orders, ran the register and made the drinks!! So it took a little while to get my drink since there were about 10 other ppl waiting for theirs. Glad I waited, my latte was super good, the barista was very friendly, & apologized for the wait. Nice spot to try out.

Yelp
Located in a relatively quiet neighborhood just a few blocks away from the always-poppin' Westheimer strip in Montrose, Mercantile serves as a chill place to catch your breath or check off some of the items that have been piling up on your to-do list. The vibe is quiet, perfect for studying, but maybe a little too quiet for catching up with friends over a cup of coffee or Tacodeli breakfast taco (a limited selection offered in the mornings while supply lasts). There are plenty of tables, outlets, and comfortable seats to park your tush for a long day of studying. There's better coffee to be found in other coffee shops around Houston, but Mercantile has a great atmosphere for productivity.
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
Tucked into a cute little Montrose neighborhood, trees and shade. Tiny little parking lot in an inconspicuous mini shopping center marked by an old, red taco truck that appears to be nearly falling apart (word on the street: the tacos are delicious). I was bummed as I wasn't looking forward to street parking, although it looked relatively safe, but fortunately I snagged an open spot right in front... maybe impeding on the taco truck... but there were no signs saying I couldn't, lol. YOLO. Inside: clean, fresh, lots of seating. Good tea options, good coffee options, even wine. My Jasmine came in a cute little mug, tea bag floating. Quality tea. I sat in the back at a long plank table, plugged in my Mac and started up my studying. There were a few of us, but we were friendly to one another, hehe. It's a nice place to go if you have some reading to catch up on. I cannot comment on the ambiance, I set my own. Bose headphones-noise cancelled-Takuya Kuroda on play, MKSAP is life right now. I'll be back. 'Twas a nice experience.

Love this coffeeshop! The coffee is good and the environment is peaceful. Would highly recommend it for students to study at. They have great tables, outlets, and wifi. The atmosphere is usually quiet with many people getting work done. The space at the back with the fake lawn and picket fence is unique but great for good study sessions.
