San Antonio Export Merit Coffee Begins Its DFW Takeover This Month | Eater Dallas

"I’m looking forward to the Highland Park outpost at 4228 Oak Lawn Avenue, which will open on April 2; like the Deep Ellum shop, it’s been designed to be bright and airy with natural wood and navy accents and will serve espresso drinks made from beans sourced in Peru, Colombia, and Honduras and roasted by Merit Roasting Company. These Dallas openings are part of Merit’s expansion beyond its San Antonio roots and follow its move into Austin beginning in 2017." - Amy McCarthy

San Antonio’s Merit Coffee Will Open Two Dallas Locations | Eater Dallas

"A second location is slated for 4228 Oak Lawn Avenue in Highland Park, with construction set to follow in December and both Dallas shops expected to open sometime in February. Also designed by Michael Hsu, the space will be modern and light-filled, decorated with warm wood, white powder‑coated steel and navy accents. Owned by Robby and Neesha Grubbs (founders of Local Coffee in San Antonio), the shop will use small-batch beans roasted by their Merit Roasting Company; official menu details have not been announced but standard espresso-based offerings are likely." - Amy McCarthy

Google
Busy location on a weekday afternoon. Perhaps the line seemed long because the service was slow. Did not look to be understaffed but I saw many customers waiting a long time for their drinks. I had a latte there. No complaints but I would say it was just average.

Google
Used to frequent Merit since I started working on the strip, but honestly every interaction I have in here is something left to be desired. Customer service is okay. Coffee isn’t the best. It’s pretty much always busy, great for them, but it definitely shows in their quality. I’ve really stopped going after my prior interaction after I was left waiting on a peppermint tea for ten or so minutes while the baristas talked to other customers instead of making my drink, not a big deal but annoying. However I decided to give them one last shot and I got a completely wrong order for a coffee that tasted like they hadn’t cleaned the machine in a few days. Definitely won’t be spending anymore of my hard earned coin here.

Google
Merit Coffee has good coffee across their chain, in this location is no exception, but this location is also consistently the weakest location in Dallas. The service is sub-par on a regular basis. There has been more than one occasion that I have seen three people behind the counter deep in conversation when customers are waiting or when online orders are pending. The employees of this location are clearly there to socialize and collect a paycheck. Customer service is a distant afterthought. Corporate needs to implement a change of management to turn this location around quickly.

Google
I haven’t had one disappointing visit to any of the Merit coffee locations! This was the first time I tried their Pistachio Dream Matcha Latte. highly recommend!

Google
This is one of, if not the slowest coffee shops in Dallas. If the blond man is working, your can guarantee your order will be wrong or he will leave something off of it. I got them at 6:30a when it opened. I didn’t get my order until 6:55a. He let a girl come in and skip the line because she said she had a doctor’s appointment. I’d already been waiting 10 mins for a kolache, when I checked on it he said the forgot to put mine in. I would advise not coming here if you’re ordering to go and value customer service.

Google
Fantastic coffee. For years I have purchased their beans and have always been impressed with the quality of them. Their coffee drinks in the store are just as good. We recently got an iced vanilla latte and loved it. We have tried other drinks like the strawberry matcha and were not quite as impressed. The quality of their coffee warrants them an easy 5 star review.

Google
My personal #1 coffee shop based on the coffee. That first sip brings me such pleasure that other good coffee feels pedestrian. I buy the beans for home use but I never quite replicate the shop’s brew.

Great spot to chat and work. Amazing flavors. Great place to feel cozy.

Yelp
Obsessed with the Banana Pudding Matcha! Stopped by Merit Coffee and had to try the Banana Pudding Matcha--and wow, it did not disappoint. It was creamy, lightly sweet, and had the perfect balance of earthy matcha with a smooth banana flavor that wasn't overpowering. Tasted like dessert in a cup, but still refreshing! Service was fast and super friendly. Definitely adding this to my regular rotation when I'm in the area. TL;DR: Delicious drinks, great service! Don't skip the Banana Pudding Matcha!

Yelp
Last night i met someone that works here (hi Claire!) she recommended i come in and try the berry cobbler matcha. Since i was in the area, i had to stop on by and give it a try. I will say when in line i downloaded the app but couldn't get it to work for me. Tried to create an account, it said i already had one, reset the password twice and still couldn't get in. I emailed them so hopefully can get that fixed. I love to be part of a reward program and have the ease of ordering ahead from the app! When i walked in this morning, i immediately noticed that it was packed, not really anywhere to sit, so be aware of that. The line wasn't too long and moved quickly. The baked goods looked tasty and they said were from local bakery la casita (i think??). The wait for my drink was short. The service was ok, nothing to write home about, but they were busy so eh. My drink was beautiful and delicious. Highly recommend! I also thought that the decor was very clean, modern and comfy.

Yelp
Vibes are good for working/studying. One minor thing is the tables are bolted to the ground so there's no flexibility with that, but it's minor at best. I got the pistachio matcha with raspberry in it and it was v delish. Post lunch hour on a weekday was a good time to go, not too crowded, but some activity here and there. Ample parking, private unisex bathrooms, a lot of windows.

Yelp
Jalapeño cheddar kolache and cortado were solid. However as I was ordering, one of the baristas (dyed bright red/pink hair, heavily tattooed, glasses) loudly verbally abused the mild mannered cashier guy, saying "THAT is how you talk to me Josh!" He was visibly uncomfortable and she later tried to play it off as a joke. She proceeds to say "I know that MEN don't understand things like that." Nasty!

Yelp
Tried the pistachio matcha at Merit Coffee while visiting Dallas and it honestly blew me away. It wasn't that fake, syrupy pistachio flavor. this actually tasted like real pistachios blended into a quality matcha. The flavor stuck with me in the best way, kind of like the lingering taste after eating actual pistachios. The color was beautiful too rich, vibrant green. Every time I'm in Dallas, this will always be a go-to. Just wish we had one in Houston. :( Also, shoutout to the staff for being so nice. While I was waiting, some girl swooped in and grabbed my drink (she probably had the same name as me and also ordered a Matcha lol). I let them know and they happily remade it for me with zero attitude. 10/10 for vibes and recovery.

Yelp
After stumbling upon Merit coffee with my travel companion, who suffers from what one can only describe as merciless IBS, we decided to pop in and see what the situation was here. After one sip of our lavender oak milk latte (which tasted like poo-pouri) I naturally asked where my companion could find the nearest bathroom. The barista snarled at me that they didn't have a restroom. We had to run out like fugitives , which was especially annoying as I had rolled my ankle the day prior in a foot race against my neighbor. Nonetheless, my travel companion was left with trauma and my ankle still hurts. This experience was emotionally scarring. If you value access to a bathroom, go anywhere else. SIGNED BOSS & CEO

Yelp
Merit Coffee was great! We ventured to Dallas and had a bit of time to kill. The staff was helpful in navigating the menu and gave great descriptions of their offerings. Plenty of seats were filled by people working, but there were a few seats for us to savor the latte and cold brews we ordered.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for a fancy coffee shop that goes hard when it comes to supplying me with caffeine in a comfortable environment and I've gotta tell you this place is fancy as shit. They've got all the espresso shots and all the syrups and milk and milk alternatives etc. All of it. They have friendly people and a very clean and tidy area in which you can consume your beverage. They have oatmeal and cookies. If you're looking for some coffee, and you're discerning about what ends up in the cup...just go here and they'll take care of you. You'll love it. You. Will. Love. It.

Yelp
This coffee shop is in such a cute area of Dallas. We had their Cereal Milk Cold Brew and The Great Pumpkin..both were excellent! Staff was really friendly.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop and loved the merch. Great service and good vibes. I was only in the shop for a few min but noticed a lot of people working so seemed like a good spot to sit for a while.

Yelp
Merit is now my official choice for coffee. Service is great, and the baristas are so nice. Cade, Goose, Eden, and Savannah work tirelessly and pleasantly to give the customers what they want. No bad attitude here. They fill the cups to the brim unlike most coffee shops town. You get all good vibes at Merit.

Yelp
Delish coffee in a beautiful coffee shop. Good ambience for working from home. Located in Oak Cliff so parking was a challenge. People out day clubbing/drinking was also a challenge. Just park close by and walk with people whenever you decide to go :)

Yelp
Good place for working ( 10 down and 10 up internet speeds). Chairs are okay. Parking in the front and back just fine. The matcha strawberry drink was quite tasty, the strawberries light and very freshly done as far as I can tell. Not artificial tasting. Props to the matcha for not being super chalky. Oat milk is $1 upcharge, same goes for other alternative milks. Total being $8 and change after tip. Their drip coffee is actually one of the better ones out there for sure, I normally do not go for drip, but it did a good job. I can't describe it much tho. Pop Tart was AMAZING. FLAKY warm and perfectly sweet. $4. Other than the poptart, I would not go back but its a decent place if its close to you to try. I believe the rest rooms are in the outside of the building so you may need to ask for access codes fyi.

Yelp
Great location, lovely cafe, cozy seating, yet, staffs are w "I don't want to be here" vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
I live right by here and used to love walking here to work or grab a coffee on the weekends. Lately, it's been disappointing. The last 3 times, they haven't had working WiFi (I work from home so that's needed). Their drinks have also gotten inconsistent - they can taste completely different depending on who's working that day. They're almost always out of breakfast tacos, and the last few times their black coffee has even been off. Service is fine and location is great, just wish they would offer WiFi and consistency.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee spot. My latte and Papas Egg & cheese taco were fabulous. I will definitely be returning many more times.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
The coffee is SO good. I like that the seating inside is built like "stalls" because I usually study alone and hate to take up a lot of room or a bigger table. The workers are very nice too :)
google avatar

Alyscia S.

Yelp
Third day in a row of going to a Merit location instead of Starbucks. The coffee is consistently good and I am loving trying new flavors in the washed cold brew. The natural cold brew is also so good plain as it has such good natural flavors and aromas. Pop tart was so moist and flavorful. I will be trying more of the baked goods in the future.
google avatar

Yelp
Top coffee place I've tried in Dallas along with LDU. Ordered an Americano and had good, bold flavor to it. Service was slower, not as friendly as LDU, but for the coffee will give it a 5.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little coffee spot in deep ellum. Got the cold brew and the taste was so good. Very friendly staff and cool place inside. Grab yourself some decent coffee from this place.

Yelp
I always loving find non-chain kind of places to support local business. I had the lavender latte here and loved it! What a fun combination of flavors. Didn't love thier sandwiches or snacks but their coffee is good!
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with a few tables outside and a few inside. As I usually do in coffee shops, I ordered a regular coffee with room for cream. They didn't bother telling me that they would put the cream in for me, but that's what they did. And I'm not sure if it was because they poured too much creamer or if it was because the coffee was super weak (probably both), but my coffee was the color of a light latte. As a lover of dark coffees, I was disappointed with the weak, milky taste of my coffee. Maybe their specialty coffees are better. But I think truly good coffee shops do even the most basic of coffees well.
google avatar

Haylee S.

Yelp
Pretty mediocre/good cafe in Dallas from my experience. Everything was good, but nothing super extraordinary! Would still recommend for a quick pit stop for coffee.
google avatar

Shivani M.

Yelp
Great coffee and study spot! I've been to some other locations but really love this one. Its quieter and has a decent amount of indoor and outdoor seating for individual or small group settings. Of course great ambiance and nice service.

Jenna W.

Yelp
Barista told me they were out of an item, proceeded to watch them make it for customers behind me. Seriously behind, accredited this to improper staffing. Prepare to wait 45 minutes for coffee. Cute merch though.
google avatar

Yelp
The service didn't offer recommendations and the workers didn't seem into working . Overall, many came in and there's is not enough space . The pastry food didn't seem to offer what it should , like the gluten free was not advertised there as it should be online . The worker also said it should be from another location , which seems like they did not like to work there or seems excite overall . They seem to polite and too cool for a communication . There was also no restroom either but at the back with a code , which seems a hassle .

Margo B.

Yelp
Merit has great ambiance and service. I plan to go back again for a coffee or tea soon!
google avatar

Scarlett B.

Yelp
What a joke the employees are. One guy sits and plays on his phone while the other is too busy cleaning up 30 minutes before closing time. The coffee is average and if you add anything too it be ready for an over-sweetened underwhelming concoction. Until they get people who actually care about working here you're experience will be the same as ordering coffee from a fast food restaurant and about the same taste. Down the street less than half a mile is Drip coffee and even a Starbucks so keep on driving right past this place. Also, the parking lot is terrible here. Really the only people who could possibly be getting coffee here are those who can walk to it or had dinner in the center and made the mistake of stopping in.
google avatar

Yelp
This place used to be so good but has really dipped down in quality as of late. While a year ago, they used to have HOMEMADE syrups (Mexican Vanilla, Homemade Chocolate, Caramel, etc), good quality alt milks (i.e. Mill King, and Califia), and overall great presentation (branded cups) and taste It seems they've decided to completely cheap out on every little material now, with store-bought syrups from the local grocery store on display, the cheapest oat and almond milks (Pacific Foods brand), and incorrect cup sizes (showing a 16oz and 20oz iced cup as a 12oz and 16oz respectively). Furthermore, the espresso itself is rarely dialed in properly This has lead to drinks tasting pretty weak and overly sweet and / or milky. Quite sad given how high quality and top-tier they used to be just over a year ago. Really hope things change going forward and they return to some form of quality control as Merit was the only Specialty / Third Wave shop in the area
google avatar

Cat N.

Yelp
One of the best lattes around!!! The baristas always take their time making it. Comes out smooth always! The lines can get backed up during peak hours and there's not enough room to stand to not be in other peoples way. Wish we could wait outside and they have a way to call us when our coffee is ready
google avatar

Chip A.

Yelp
I will start by saying I'm obsessed with this brand and when I'm Texas I always make it a point to come here. Today was disappointing though. I put in a mobile order, showed up about 10 minutes early. Inquired about it and was told I had to wait. It's only ten minutes, but I watched other people walk in and get the same drink I ordered, before me. I understand the timing is laid out in the app which is my bad, but not until I said I needed to leave and wanted a refund did they start making it. I don't understand why anyone would make such a big statement about someone showing up early. Cafe only has four customers here. Seemed like a weird unnecessary flex.

Niki P.

Yelp
Great location. They do an excellent cold brew and have great service in recommendations. I greatly appreciated the ability to sample and find the coffee that was right for me in the moment. Its location is awesome and the ambiance was that of a vibe to chill in. Will be going back

Yelp
i love this place! the staff is so sweet and the atmosphere is very cool. the strawberry poptart was yummy and i enjoyed that it was homemade. and the coffee is great

Yelp
This is a legit coffee shop! Great location, great brews, and tasty eats. There's lots of seating, pretty nifty too. Lots of bright lighting and in a great spot in Deep Ellum with ample street parking. Everyone is cheery and eager to assist you. I've probably gotten the most work done in this shop so I'll definitely be back. Custom drinks too! I had a delicious pastry that consisted of Gouda cheese and bacon on the inside but was very crispy on the outside. It reminded me of a Croissant Soufflé of some sort and the their Pop Tarts pack way more punch than the average.
google avatar

Yelp
I've always enjoyed Merit coffee beans, and this is my second visit here. First time was pretty solid. I got a hot latte to go (enjoyed the first few sips in store), and the texture was just as expected. This time around, I placed the same order. Flavor is obviously good since the espresso is fresh, however the texture was very watery. Visually it was a little sad :( I get it if the barista is new (wish you the best!!) and needs to keep practicing/training, but it's a bit disappointing for Merit's standards.
google avatar

Aishwarya I.

Yelp
Merit is a solid choice, and because of proximity has become one of my go-tos recently for a quick morning pit stop. I like their vanilla latte, even though it is definitely on the sweeter/sugary side compared to others I've had--it has been consistent across multiple visits which is something I always look for in a coffee shop. The baristas here know what they're doing! The only drawback is that the drinks get pretty expensive here compared to other comparable coffee shops ($7.25 for a large latte with tax and tip and all, can't say it's necessarily worth that price). They do serve Tacodeli tacos which is a win in my book! Seating at this location gets pretty tight at peak hours and it's often hard to find outdoor seating as they only have a few tables outside, but it's usually pretty empty in the early mornings.
google avatar

Yelp
Enjoyed my quick stop at Merit Coffee for cold brew and an affogato! The cold brew was really flavorful, chocolatey and sweet - perfect for a hot day! A group of us stopped in after browsing in Deep Ellum and the clean, crisp décor of Merit Coffee was very welcoming. I loved the giant windows and abundance of natural light; I would definitely come here to do a few hours of work or catch up with a friend. It's definitely an open space though so likely not a good place for a very private conversation. We spread out on a comfy booth and as soon as I checked into Yelp, a 10% coupon popped up on the app! Not sure if this is a Yelp or shop promotion but it made my day to go back and order a yummy affogato (~ $6). The vanilla ice cream was as good as any, creamy and sweet, and the expresso went perfectly with it. Definitely recommend this place for those of you in Dallas!

Yelp
Genuinely good coffee. Just moved here from out of state and was hoping to find a good replacement coffee shop, and Merit doesn't disappoint. I worked in third wave coffee for seven years, and my husband is pretty picky, and we both really love the coffee here. I'm gluten free and their hippie bar is good, and my husband liked their ham and cheese cruffin. This particular location has easy parking and is in a great neighborhood. Baristas are friendly and polite and the cafe is always clean. 10/10.
google avatar

Stuart J.

Yelp
I love coming here. The coffee is top notch, the team is super friendly. I just wish they would serve the breakfast tacos all day .
google avatar

Meggie W.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and fabulous barista/owners. I had the oat milk latte and my boyfriend had a cafe mocha. Beautifully prepared and the cups were delightful. Superp coffee! Clean modern design inside. The only downside was all the college kids on laptops camping out hogging multiple seats and tables whilst their dried up empty coffee cups sit never to be touched again (picture one kid, laptop, a table & 3 chairs occupied with that one persons books, bag & personal snacks - yes, personal snack, not bought at this coffee shop!!!!!). We ordered 3 coffees as we chatted for about half an hour. We were respectful of the coffee shop & other patrons. These laptop seat hoggers never once budged and it was unfair to all the non laptop patrons standing around.
google avatar

Yelp
This coffee shop was worth the hype everyone had been giving me about it. During Covid they have their indoor area closed and responsibly distanced tables in the outdoors you can use. The place looks like a great hangout spot for when the inside it open and not to mention they had a 90s playlist going on that puts you in a great mood right away. I ordered their cold brew and iced mocha latte. The cold brew was great - little bitterness and strong floral flavors but what "brew" my mind was the iced mocha latte. I ordered it after asking the barista what his favorite cold drink was, and he didn't disappoint. Mixing in their home made chocolate syrup and a shot of expresso it was one of the best iced lattes I've had in a long time! I'm more of a strong black coffee drinker but this was sugar worth every calorie. Will definitely come back for that drink and try some of their hot coffees on a cooler day.
google avatar

Danny N.

Yelp
Either my cappuccino was seriously screwed up or I just ordered their worse drink (out of their extremely limited options) but regardless, I got a tiny little cup that in two small gulps it was all gone! And for that tiny cup, they charged me close to $5? I'm sure I can find tons of other coffee places with MUCH better coffee and flavor without feeling like I'm being totally ripped off! Thanks but never again thanks!
google avatar

Victoria M.

Yelp
I really like the Mexican coffee and the chocolate donut here. I came in to try the pop tart which was pretty good as well but I preferred the donut. My husband loved their iced matcha and we love that they carry oat milk. Their atmosphere is really great to work in and they have ample seating which is WONDERFUL! A major plus. Also, I'm not sure how many people care about this but I thought I'd mention that they carry topo Chico which I like because sometimes I just come in for a pastry and a topo.
google avatar

Angie S.

Yelp
I love Merit coffee. This was the most delicious latte I've had since moving from NJ to TX two years ago. This was at the Deep Ellum location but I love both Dallas locations.

Luis R.

Yelp
I often go to the different Merit's in the Dallas area as I Love merit's coffee. Unfortunately this is the location I try to avoid as their staff is so rude in this location. I wouldn't recommend this location as the staff makes you feel like it's a bother to ask questions about their drinks or even as simple as asking for a napkin.
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
GREAT oat milk latte! The next time I'm over in the this area I am getting coffee beans and one of their super soft long sleeve shirts to take home with me because I can't stop thinking about how good that coffee was and how soft that shirt is hahaha! Everyone in there was so kind. My daughter also thoroughly enjoyed her their pop-tarts! They reminded me of the ones from back home from a bakery that would make them from scratch and deliver them around town to the local shops. Bakeries and pastries like that are THE BEST! Some of these reviews have mentioned their seating options since COVID but the day we went (towards the end of October) we were able sit at some spaced apart tables inside. They also have some seating outside in the walk way which is covered! It was actually pretty steady when we went in and it was a great spot for me to meet up with a mom friend. There's a trail that is close by, so we were able to take advantage of that as well because we love the area!
google avatar

Yelp
The inside of this place reminds me a bit of Weekend Coffee; minimalist, white with natural wood accents, streamlined and thoughtful menu. The tables, if you were in groups of 3+, were maybe a bit tight if you planned to work and enjoy refreshments, but outlets were plentiful and WiFi was quick, so I've enjoyed my beverage The matcha latte with oat milk was creamy, earthy and had just the right amount of sweetness. The hot chocolate I had maybe could have been a tad hotter but the overall flavor was good. Honestly, thought, it was the pop tart that blew my mind. I don't normally gravitate towards pop tarts, but the cashier highly recommended it and they were low on options since it was past midday. It was flavorful, actual berry tasting filling wrapped in buttery crust; just the perfect size without going overboard. *drool* Come here for the pop tart, stay for the ambiance... and a second pop tart.

Yelp
What a great addition to Dallas! I love the feel inside of this coffee shop. There is ample space for working/studying, great coffee and seasonal flavors. The barista was great and told us all about the flavors they make and the best was the vanilla which has a touch of honey flavor. The chocolate flavor was dark and a little more bitter than I was expecting. The reason is they make the flavors themselves so the dark richness comes through. Would pair great with a pasty. I love that they have taco deli options as well as homemade pastries - next time I'm definitely getting the pop tarts! The inside space is great, parking is easy and out front, and the people who work there are very kind. Would love to go back and sit and work and get some coffee. They have some seasonal flavors and options in the works as I was told - so next visit will have different flavor options and I will update on what they have!
