Every 2018 Restaurant Closing in Portland (So Far) | Eater Portland

"I read that classic Mom-and-pop-style restaurant Meriwether’s closed on Mother’s Day (May 13) as it prepared to reopen as a rooftop-only restaurant in a new construction while the building itself becomes an event space." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Northwest Restaurant Meriwether’s Will Close and Open Rooftop Spot | Eater Portland

"Quintessential parents-in-town restaurant Meriwether’s will close May 13 after owner John Orlando said the cost of upkeep on the 1920s L’Auberge restaurant space where they opened in 2004 would be “several hundred thousand dollars.” Farm-to-table before it was cool, Meriwether’s—sited on the grounds of the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition—was renovated by John and Renee Orlando to reflect the building’s pedigree and is known for its verdant garden seating. The restaurant will reopen in about a year as a rooftop joint in a five-story wooden building to be built in the parking lot, with the original restaurant converted to a private event space, and the owners say patrons can expect the same garden-seating feel." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Came in for the complimentary Continental breakfast provided with our room. Did not expect such a tasty and hearty offering. Then we were seated in the Meriwether's restaurant and served like we were full dining guests. The service was attentive, fast, and intuitive. Great service! I will be back just to eat at the restaurant.

Google
Very good, very fresh tasting. Server was great, friendly, & helpful. The house club sandwich is really good. The fries seemed doubled fried. Soft inside crisp outside. The sandwich portion is large and served with a dill pickle slice. The sandwich came with a choice of soup, salad , or fries.

This was hands down some of the best food we’ve ever had. We’re traveling over to kooskia from Portland and stayed here in Lewiston overnight. We got to the hotel and did the normal thing of looking around for dinner. Stumbled on this bistro inside the hells canyon hotel and wow - so glad we did! We got the pretzels, boneless wings, side salad, and the hummus plate. It was to die for! It was honestly so good we had to have it for breakfast the next morning. Thank you!!

Went for an early Mother’s Day dinner with my family (party of 3) and had a 6:30 reservation. We were seated promptly on the patio, but unfortunately, we were never acknowledged by any staff after that. We waited 30 minutes, during which we watched our waitress serve other tables, including a large party that arrived after us, and even sit down to chat with them, but no one ever came to take our order or check in. We let the host know we were leaving, and she was very kind, but the lack of service was disappointing. The interior had only a few occupied tables while the patio was full so why seat guests where the staff clearly couldn’t keep up? Very disappointed and won’t be returning any time soon

Google
Great stop off to get a wonderful burger and fries. My test of a great place is the tartar sauce and there’s was fabulous. Thanks for hosting us while we visit Lewiston, ID.

Google
We went in for the holiday buffet and the quality of the food was not worth the price they charged. Hot dishes that were freshly placed were cold, the baron of beef was cold and dry, the salmon over cooked and also dry. They did have a wide variety of food to choose from, along with multiple different desserts, but a lot of the dishes lacked flavor and they had steakums sausage as one of the options. That's right, they charged $50 a plate just to serve there customers $2 frozen sausage. Multiple servers walked past our table without serving it, but then again, why display impeccable service when they automatically got 20% gratuity added to each bill. Selected two stars because of the variety of food, everything else was misleading and a huge disappointment, especially the quality of food for the price they changed.

Google
Tyler as a bartender and server is amazing! King salmon was very good as well. Four stars due to one bartender leaving early before Tyler took over leaving none bartending.... she also made absolutely terrible drinks.

Google
Went for the Christmas Eve menu. Good selection but was very small for the price. The crab cakes were good. Ordered the rib eyes. Overcooked and just dry. Salmon was a very small portion and thin. Others enjoyed the lobster ravioli. Was disappointed in the food for the price. Dessert was good. Service seriously lacked. No refills eating a dry steak you kinda want a drink. A party of 7 they brought 4 slices of bread. Was not checked on to say anything. Since they brought the wrong dressing for my salad by the time they came back with dinner it was to late. Just when your paying over 400 for dinner, service should be impeccable. The service sucked. Kinda disappointed with overall experience for dinner

Yelp
Sat at the bar. Service was excellent. Bar tender was very attentive to our needs. Did not eat but a couple of patrons had steak and potatoes ... looked good. Small bar but enjoyed the quiet ambiance.

Yelp
Great patio, had one good server out of the last four visits... the food is just - eh. Salted pretzel is so greasy and they use gas station cheese sauce. Seasonal Apple dessert- pass. The burgers are decent. 6/10 overall.

Yelp
We have enjoyed it in the past. However, this was by far the worst meal and experience we have ever had. The waitress was very young and unfortunately rude and extremely incompetent at her job. She just kept saying "Oh Im sorry" however, she did nothing to correct things. It was not busy, yet everything we ordered was cold. None of the food was as ordered. The gravy and soups were all cold and congealed. The fries were extremely overcooked, shriveled and oversalted. The over easy egg was over hard. It turned into a very expensive family pre holiday brunch that wasnt worth eating. Then when I paid the bill and asked for a reciept and a box for the half sandwich my daughter wanted to take home, the waitress never came back, so after waiting and additional 15 minutes for a receipt and box that never came. We finally just got up and left. As I heard someone at another table say "this coffee is cold" and our waitress say " Im sorry, I will get you some water, but Im out of water right now" Wow! We will never go back again. Its not high end, as recently advertised, at all. Denneys is likely better, and I dont eat at Denneys!! Holiday decorations were nice.

Yelp
This place was a lot more fun when Mr. Jollymore was there! I visit occasionally just because I have good memories and sometimes you just gotta have something different! The food is very tasty and very creative. I really like the pot pie served in the cast-iron skillet that they made. The service is excellent, and the ambience is completely laid back, although you can make it elegant by adding, someone! Six stars!

Yelp
Great Lunch Experience @ Meriwether's Bistro in Lewiston, ID. !! We entered the hotel and made our way passed the lobby to this Bistro. We were greeted, directed to seat ourselves, and decided to pick a high top table in the bar area looking out into the patio. The restaurant was clean and inviting with only a couple of other parties present upon arrival at noon on a weekday, but it was soon quite busy. Our bar keep/server Bert was professional, friendly, and good company! We had entertaining conversations with him while he provided great service. Our freshly brewed ice teas were in huge oversized beer mugs, which we loved! The spinach artichoke dip with toasted crostini appetizer was out-of-this-world!! The smoked brisket sandwich and chicken Caesar wrap was mouth-watering delicious and the side of regular and sweet potato fries were perfectly crisp!!! Needless to say, we had a five star experience all the way around.

Yelp
Valentines Dinner was a pre fixe menu for which advanced reservations were required as their space was selling out. There weren't enough tables to constitute a rush for a reservation. That said the Valentines diners could have easily been seated in the main dining room. We arrived at our designated time and were seated in a sparsely furnished lower level room that appeared to be used for meetings, weddings or receptions. Absolutely no ambiance or interior design. Just several tables scattered around a room too large for the number of tables. Wait staff seemed very ill at ease and unsure of how to manage the evening. Our chairs and tables were most uncomfortable as the tables happened to be small outdoor metal patio tables with banquet chairs. Our table barely accommodated our small salad plates. We have to say that our meal was actually quite good, and I would consider going back there again. If we return, we will insist on seating in the regular dining room which is close to the kitchen and bar for the wait staff and will have regular size dining tables.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I went and both ordered steak. She ordered a T-bone done medium and I ordered the ribeye done medium rare. We both received ribeyes that were cooked rare and very grisly. Worst steak I have ever had in a restaurant. But, the waitress was very gracious, the sides were delicious, and the ambience was nice. Would go back, but not order the steak again.

Tom S.

Yelp
We (two couples) stopped for dinner upon recommendation from a mutual friend. We enjoyed a most excellently prepared dinner, finding the sandwich, soup and salads we ordered to be very nicely prepared and served. The other couple, who was apprehensive of a 'hotel restaurant' made a surprising suggestion that we dine there again a second evening to further sample the menu. We did, and again were not disappointed. Adam was our server, while Robert tended bar. Both provided top shelf and friendly service.

Yelp
I've been here a few times- this last time for dad's 75th bday celebration- per usual the servuce was fantastic- & food was wonderful too! I highly recommend the "Beast Burger" on a gluten free bun- & I've also enjoyed their steak salad in the past. And their onion rings & tater tots r yummy too (though incidental gluten exposure in those of course.) while here today there was a groomsmen party, several misc couples & our special needs table... all handled by the local staff with genuine patience & care. Complimentary ice cream for my dad's bday too. Highly recommend for a good local place- whether staying at the hotel or not. Note the bathrooms are located in the front lobby.

Yelp
great food , breakfast, lunch , dinner very creative specia, outstanding serve, lot of meetings space, beautiful rooms

Yelp
Terrible waiter, he took an hour to take our order. Then didn't put it in to the kitchen for another 30 min. We were there for 2.5 hrs and only able to get 2 drinks. I ordered the fish and chips for $18 I would hope to get more than 12 fries.

Chet B.

Yelp
after being ignored for 30 mins I walked ou. waitress asked both tables next to me but wouldn't acknowledge I was even there?? I don't understand??

Joseph P.

Yelp
My wife made the regrettable mistake of celebrating our 15th anniversary with Meriwether's. ~$125 for awful food and service. When I expressed my displeasure, we were pacified with a frozen, inedible creme brule. Pathetic. It was my most disappointing dining experience ever. Salt in my wounds? Muer's parent never responded to my follow-up email. One star, simply so I can post this review.
google avatar

Alexander C.

Yelp
Atrocious, overpriced food at the kind of place at which you have to coax your server into taking your order. You know you're in for a good time when whilst pulling a glass from a dishwasher one bartender asks another, "is this clean?" You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Yelp
I was staying at the Red Lion and didn't have a car so ate 3 meals here. First I ate in the bar and had the baked crab and swiss melt cheese. The taste was good. The sweet potato fries were especially good. The second meal was dinner in the restaurant area and I had the Alaskan cod that had a parmesan and herb crust and came with mushroom risotto. With the dinner you had a choice of the salad bar or soup. I had the salad bar and there was a nice selection of options including beets, cheese, cole slaw, lettuce, carrots, baby corn, and more. I enjoyed the salad. The fish was a bit overcooked but taste was ok. The last night I had the grilled cheese sandwich that was supposed to come with tomato soup and a choice of fries or soup. It did not come with soup and I was charged extra for the fries. The grilled cheese though was delicious-came with bacon and two kinds of cheese. I'd order that again. With all meals it took longer than expected to get my food. In the last two visits, the waitress was pleasant but just brought the check when I was finishing my meal and didn't ask if I wanted any dessert or another drink. The restaurant only had a few guests so no reason to rush me out of there. I ate there for convenience and overall it was decent.

Larry S.

Yelp
I stay at the Red Lion every so often for work and usually eat at Meriwether's since its convenient. I wish they didn't shut their brewery down, but they do have a good mix of beers on tap. The Cougar Gold burger was great as were the onion rings. You can usually catch some live music in the evenings and the patio is great in the warmer weather. The breakfast was a disappointment. this time and I question their cleanliness. Picked up a plate and it was coated with dried food underneath...yuck. Other plates did not look clean. Food at the buffet was ok, but I was careful of what I picked. Scrambled eggs were watery. Mixed fruit was decent one day but seemed rotten the next.

Paula S.

Yelp
4 of us ladies went in for dinner. Took over 20 minutes to be acknowledged. After 35 minutes still no water or order taken. After 45 minutes we walked out. I had been there a few years ago and it was amazing, we were so disappointed!!! We will never go back!!!

Yelp
Really like this place. Only go for lunch, but my coworkers and I enjoy it. The Cobb salad is huge and my favorite is the club and fries. Sign up for the daily text of what is being served on the lunch buffet. Great staff and always greet you with a smile.

TJ O.

Yelp
My bad. We gave them another chance. Food was terrible again BUT our waitress was very nice and was there when we needed her. Prime rib was terrible It was lacking flavor and appearance was horrible to the point my son cautioned me to eat it or not. I had a couple bites and it was bad. Two of my guests ordered chicken tacos. Both got fish. Returned onee and it was good tasting according to my guest. Fish tacos had the smallest piece of fish ever and it was almost burnt. Wife loves orzo. She was very disappointed cause it was over salted. She couldn't eat it. I tried it and agreed. Guests all ordered fruity drinks and bar charged extra for a splash of cranberry and splash of pineapple. Come on what's with the nickel and dime crap. Will not return
google avatar

Paul J.

Yelp
Food was decent, plenty of staff, not sure what took so long to get it order but crap happens.
google avatar

Cameron C.

Yelp
Met family here. It was convenient since I was staying in the connected hotel. Nice place to hang out and have a drink. I was wondering why such a great place was so empty. The food just wasn't up to snuff nor was the batch of local draft brew. So I stuck the tried & true brews and was happy.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
The steak on the warm steak salad was delicious, very lean. The salad had no flavor. The salad had very minimal dressing, and when I asked for more, it was pure oil. And I got one slice of avacado! It had great potential, but needs some flavor! The waitress was very good!
google avatar

Teresa W.

Yelp
Only place in town I could find that would make pancakes at 10:15am on a weekday, that we hadn't already tried (there was one other place that did). My mom has dietary and teeth issues so has limited things she can eat. We think our waitresses name was Rose P., she was EXCELLENT. Very helpful and personable. The only thing that would make it a five star is if real butter and maple syrup were served automatically. I find margarine and fake maple are the standard fare which is disappointing. As soon as our waitress brought out our meals, I noticed it was margarine on the English muffin. She quickly brought me another one with butter pats. So appreciated that!!! Would go back again for sure!

Bill W.

Yelp
My wife and I ate at Meriwethers last night and it was the worst meal we've had in recent memory. It took an hour to get served and chicken fried steak so severely over cooked it was difficult to even cut with a steak knife, impossible to chew. Terrible service and bad food.
google avatar

Robbie K.

Yelp
Probably my best eating experience so far, kinda hard to find because it's inside red lion inn, but the food was awesome. Fresh made patties great flavor combinations and the friees are beer battered! Also my martinis were mixed perfectly and my service was great. 5 out of 5. I'll be back!
google avatar

Katharin I.

Yelp
What an amazing staff. The food was top notch. Patio was set up with elegant taste. Great experience.
google avatar

Rebecca V.

Yelp
Red Lion Meriwether's Bistro has a hidden gem of a mixologist/bartender. Go see Gary and enjoy some of his craft cocktails. My favorite is his margarita. It's like no other. Drinks, food, service won't disappoint......promise!

Tonya P.

Yelp
Service was slow. Ordered French dip and husband had chicken stroganoff. Neither were great. The patio is super nice and they have misters to help beat the heat.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Not good. Had the buffalo burger, asked for medium rare, came back well done. Didn't have cheese on it. Kids menu was terrible. Service was slow. Server thought it would be neat to whisper the entire night. Also he said the burger came with soup, salad or fries. I asked for salad. A few minutes later he came out and said the burger came with the salad bar. He still brought out the salad. Dumb.

Travis E.

Yelp
The food was good and the service was good. They were really busy and I sat in the bar area and Ryliegh was very nice attentive considering she's the bartender. If you don't want to drive to dinner once you get to your hotel this place is to go
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
The club here is on par. Coffee is good too. Service was friendly and prompt. Decent atmosphere, save for a little construction.

Denise R.

Yelp
Dinner was amazing! Wonderful service, fabulous meal!! Had the cowboy ribeye. Cooked to perfection!

Alex T.

Yelp
So confused. This place should be packed constantly, just for the Beef Crustini. There should be a line out the door. Get your poop in a group, Lewiston.
google avatar

Don M.

Yelp
Execelent crab sandwiches. So good it got them 2 stars. Service was good but the place was so understaffed that it was impossible to be 100%. 3 stars is the best you get until you step your game up.
google avatar

Wes O.

Yelp
A wonderful, open atmosphere. Definitely more "bistro" with low booths, bright lighting and low volume modern music. It feels and is decorated like a hotel restaurant..a nice hotel reataurant; more "business" than "intimate" dining. The food was good and the wait staff really very attentive and pleasant. We would like to come back when the outdoor patio was working in summer!

John S.

Yelp
I took my family to Meriwetner's in Lewiston for lunch today and was reminded how very great the food, atmosphere and especially the service are. Our server, Tyler (Taylor?) was fantastic and kept the good food coming. 6 stars on the 1-5 scale in all categories.
google avatar

M P.

Yelp
Bar food. Lunch with a friend while I was in town for the afternoon. Watched USA play Belgium in the World Cup. We've ate here before. Good burgers both times. Would be a better memory if USA had won!

Lorelei M.

Yelp
Great Service. Our sandwiches were so full of flavor. Menu had a good variety. Wonderful desserts!!
google avatar

Clinton H.

Yelp
The food is ok, but the price is quite high for normal meals. They do have a very good seafood buffet on Friday nights which is very, very good. But, for run of the mill, ordinary meals, there are better options in the L/C Valley. Note that this is a part of the Red Lion Hotel.

Larry F.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. The food was great, the atmosphere is really nice, and we have been literally blown away by the service. Very attentive and some of the nicest and friendliest servers we have seen anywhere. Usually hotel restaurants are a little 'meh', but we would choose to dine here even if we weren't staying at the hotel.
google avatar

Jean-marc L.

Yelp
We had breakfast here and it was fabulous ! I highly recommend the chicken fried steak and eggs !

Jefferson D.

Yelp
I recently returned to Lewiston to visit a high school friend and we went to lunch at Red lion. Before today, it has been about 10 years since I ate at this place. The last time I was here was for the seafood buffet a long time ago when the promotion was never trust a skinny chief. if you are from the area you might recall the ad. It was nice then but it appears they have extensively remodeled the dinning room I really enjoyed the new decor and the over all flow of the dinning area. We ordered an appetizer I do not recall the specific name, however it was guacamole served on a peace of bread. The guac had a lot of flavor with a nice creamy texture. I also enjoyed the small sliver of radish served on top. I typically do not like raw radish, but it added a nice crunch to the bread and guacamole. the radish also created a slight spicy kick of flavor to the appetizer. I ordered a home made burger with cougar cheese cooked to medium and this is what i received. Most places do not allow ground beef cooked to order so it was nice to order my burger with a little pink color in the center. I did not ask while at the bistro and I am not positive, but the burger tasted like it was flamed broiled. The beef itself had a lot of flavor and I enjoyed the slight crunch from what I assume was a grilled bun. The onion rings served on the top of the bun was excellent, the rings had a great crunch and did not appear to be oily. ever ones standards differ, however, I thought the food was excellent and the price for lunch was very reasonable for a gourmet burger. My friend ordered a Cobb salad and he enjoyed it. I have never ate a Cobb salad but it was huge. Our server, was very attentive and quick to refill our drinks with checking to see if we needed any thing else. During our meal the manager approached our table and asked if we were enjoying our lunch. She made us feel very welcome and I it seemed like she wanted to make sure we were happy with our dining experience. I should of taken photos but I do not think about it since my purpose is to eat not to review. My review might be rated high because this place is a lot different then I remembered a long time ago. It has been improved greatly over the years, probably due to better management. If you are in town check it out I think you will enjoy it.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
A co-worker and I go to the express lunch once in awhile...probably because we forget that it's not all that great. The meat is usually good...although last week was supposed to be steak but it was meat cut off a roast, although a good roast. The tools are always hard as a rock so don't bother. For the price we could have had actually steak at Applebee's.
google avatar

Joshua H.

Yelp
The summertime ales were delicious. The chicken Caesar wrap was very good. Very nice atmosphere with good service.

Rit B.

Yelp
A really good restaurant. Very friendly and attentive staff. I recommend the fish and chips. Restaurant is inside the Red Lion Inn, a very nice place to stay with a brew pub included. How great is that?. Bad weather kept us inside but thanks to the great food and good beer we didn't mind.

Mark B.

Yelp
So I'm a picky eater so my wife ordered us a nice dinner from mad dash so she decided on getting me the cougar gold Mac and cheese with crab now let's get down to it why would you advertise something you clearly not serving the Mac and cheese was bland and nuclear orange I can tell you with 100% that it contained no real cheese just some powdered cheese sauce and let's not talk about the crab they dident even try just dumped some freezer burnt old crab on top or I would call it crap I feel like the chef or cook must think Realy low of its customers and should be ashamed this was not a bad meal this was a scam cougar cheese is a staple and to advertise this to locals and tourist is just a disgrace .How about just take it off your menu I don't recommend not will I ever be back again

Emilee M.

Yelp
best restaurant ever. banquet hosts were amazing. especially wyatt, owen, and dmo. loved the reply i am party party.

Chip S.

Yelp
Good spot. We were skeptical since it is part of the Red Lion, but was tasty and presentation was nice. Cougar Burger was really good and the fries excellent. Caesar salad was well done and the wedge salad was also Good.

Grace Z.

Yelp
We had our office Christmas Party hosted here and we were well taken care of. The staff did an amazing job giving us a private area that we could keep all together and mingle. The service, food, and drinks were great as well! I would recommend having a private party here for others.
