The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week | Eater NY

"This Russian banya out on Brooklyn’s Seagate has a sizable food menu that’s better than it needs to be: I loved the pickle platter (green tomato quarters, watermelon slabs, crunchy red cabbage), a mushroom soup flecked with barley and fresh dill, one of the best borschts I’ve had, and inhalable pelmeni in meat, potato, and sweet cheese varieties ($14); it’s a trek but I’ll continue returning for special occasions." - Eater Staff

Good for one-time visit, classic banya vibe I went to Mermaid Spa once and overall, it was a decent experience. The place has a traditional Russian bathhouse feel — hot steam rooms, cold plunge, and a cafeteria-style area with simple food like borscht and bread. It was clean, though a bit crowded. If you’re curious about banya culture, it’s worth trying at least once.

Surprised by this "Banya" just a sauna! Only 4 hours are given for one payment, and I have to constantly monitor the time, small uncomfortable room to change clothes, everything is kind of old, ugly showers, there are buckets for brewing brooms but at the entrance to the sauna room it is written: WARNING NO BUCKETS OF WATER ALLOWED IN THIS BANYA.... this is idiocy, I asked the staff and they are also surprised by this, but they are just staff, they do not care, I asked at the reception if you are inside the bath (room) can you pour water on your head, and at the same time be right above the drain? the reception says I don't know, but I think it's possible... terrible 3 shower rooms between 2 saunas... ordered crackers but they were in oil, soft, ordered tea, cheap tea, tasteless and gave paper cups, at first I ordered just tea but they brought me jam and honey and sliced lemon, well, in many bathhouses they bring tea with something like jam, honey, crackers, etc. but it's included in the price, and here they give me a receipt and there it says separately $ 3 for these sweets, I asked why do I have to pay extra? I was told it's not included in the price of the tea... well, it's not about these couple of bucks but about the fact that they simply imposed it on me and at the same time did not ask me! people work here who are in no way connected with the provision of services! I will never come here again! terrible place! I do not recommend it to anyone!!!

I went here in December on a Tuesday weekday and had a great time. The sauna and steam rooms were hotter than anything I have experienced, and once I was brave enough to do the cold plunge I loved it. The meal was delicious, especially with icy cold beers in a glass after going in the sauna. Highly recommend! Don’t forget to bring flip-flops so you don’t have to buy them.

Mermaid Spa is truly a hidden gem and one of the best spots in the city to unwind and recharge. From the moment you step inside, you’re transported into a peaceful and rejuvenating environment that feels worlds away from the stress of daily life. The entire facility is clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully laid out, creating the perfect atmosphere for relaxation. What makes Mermaid Spa stand out is the variety and quality of its saunas and steam rooms. Each one offers a different experience, from traditional dry heat to aromatic steam, and even the cold plunge pools are incredibly refreshing after a good sweat. You can really feel the health benefits after just one visit—your skin feels cleaner, your muscles looser, and your mind clearer. The staff is also courteous and helpful, making sure everything runs smoothly. I especially appreciated how clean everything was, including the locker rooms and lounge areas. There’s also a restaurant on site that serves surprisingly good food, making it easy to spend several hours here without needing to leave. Whether you’re going solo for some peace and quiet or spending time with friends or family, Mermaid Spa is a perfect escape. I always leave feeling completely refreshed and look forward to my next visit. Highly recommend!

No doubt the best Russian sauna in Brooklyn and probably in the whole NYC. Clean, neat, relaxing. Getting pretty busy on weekends during the cold season, so my suggestion is that if possible, go there any week day. It's not cheap food, but it's worth very penny. Highly recommended. Be aware that you will have only 6 towels per visit. Any additional towel will cost you $1.

It is always a relaxing and pleasant experience. After every visit, you leave feeling like a new person. They have dry and wet saunas, steam room, ice-cold pool, and a large jacuzzi. The main sitting area is big enough, and even when it is full, it doesn't feel crowded. The changing room is also comfortable with good lockers and showers. It is always clean everywhere. In-house food is very good (restaurant prices), there is even a grilled octopus on the menu, but I would like to see more beers - they only have two kinds- Czech and German. Keep in mind: this place has become very popular recently, so even on a week day, it can be filled up quickly, especially late afternoon, so advance online reservation is highly recommended. My only wish is that I went there more often.

My favorite banya in nyc/nj. Super hot saunas and steam room. Cold plunge is great. Place is clean. 4 hr time limit, which isn't bad, I don't purchase any food and strictly go to use the saunas and cold plunge. The 450 for 10 sessions is a great deal which puts the admission at 45 a session which is great. Regular admission is 55 which isn't bad. Not for the faint hearted if your not used to Russian style banyas this is not for you. I have been going for over 10 years and always appreciate the consistency and quality amenities
