The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week | Eater NY

"This Russian banya out on Brooklyn’s Seagate has a sizable food menu that’s better than it needs to be: I loved the pickle platter (green tomato quarters, watermelon slabs, crunchy red cabbage), a mushroom soup flecked with barley and fresh dill, one of the best borschts I’ve had, and inhalable pelmeni in meat, potato, and sweet cheese varieties ($14); it’s a trek but I’ll continue returning for special occasions." - Eater Staff

Good for one-time visit, classic banya vibe I went to Mermaid Spa once and overall, it was a decent experience. The place has a traditional Russian bathhouse feel — hot steam rooms, cold plunge, and a cafeteria-style area with simple food like borscht and bread. It was clean, though a bit crowded. If you’re curious about banya culture, it’s worth trying at least once.

I absolutely love this spa and try to visit it every week. The steam rooms are excellent, always hot and relaxing. Everything is clean and well maintained, the food is delicious, and the staff is very friendly and attentive. Service is always on time and the atmosphere is calm and pleasant. Highly recommend this place!

I love coming to this banya! It’s always an amazing experience. The saunas are incredible, the customer service is outstanding, and the food is consistently delicious. If you haven’t been yet, you should definitely come.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Very Disappointing Experience Our visit to Mermaid Spa was a big letdown from start to finish. The service was terrible — staff inside the spa clearly lack any real hospitality or customer service experience. The rules are overly strict and make the whole place feel tense instead of relaxing, which totally defeats the purpose of a spa visit. Food service was another disappointment — no matter what you order, it takes way too long to arrive. The only positive part of the experience was the front desk employees, who were friendly and professional. Everyone else working inside seriously needs proper training or should not be in this type of business at all. For the amount of money they charge, the overall experience is just not worth it. The service, atmosphere, and quality are far below expectations. Definitely not up to par for what a spa should be.

I went here in December on a Tuesday weekday and had a great time. The sauna and steam rooms were hotter than anything I have experienced, and once I was brave enough to do the cold plunge I loved it. The meal was delicious, especially with icy cold beers in a glass after going in the sauna. Highly recommend! Don’t forget to bring flip-flops so you don’t have to buy them.

Surprised by this "Banya" just a sauna! Only 4 hours are given for one payment, and I have to constantly monitor the time, small uncomfortable room to change clothes, everything is kind of old, ugly showers, there are buckets for brewing brooms but at the entrance to the sauna room it is written: WARNING NO BUCKETS OF WATER ALLOWED IN THIS BANYA.... this is idiocy, I asked the staff and they are also surprised by this, but they are just staff, they do not care, I asked at the reception if you are inside the bath (room) can you pour water on your head, and at the same time be right above the drain? the reception says I don't know, but I think it's possible... terrible 3 shower rooms between 2 saunas... ordered crackers but they were in oil, soft, ordered tea, cheap tea, tasteless and gave paper cups, at first I ordered just tea but they brought me jam and honey and sliced lemon, well, in many bathhouses they bring tea with something like jam, honey, crackers, etc. but it's included in the price, and here they give me a receipt and there it says separately $ 3 for these sweets, I asked why do I have to pay extra? I was told it's not included in the price of the tea... well, it's not about these couple of bucks but about the fact that they simply imposed it on me and at the same time did not ask me! people work here who are in no way connected with the provision of services! I will never come here again! terrible place! I do not recommend it to anyone!!!

The sauna is awesome! The steam rooms are excellent — perfect for relaxing and unwinding. The food is a bit pricey, but overall, I really like it. Definitely recommend this place!

No doubt the best Russian sauna in Brooklyn and probably in the whole NYC. Clean, neat, relaxing. Getting pretty busy on weekends during the cold season, so my suggestion is that if possible, go there any week day. It's not cheap food, but it's worth very penny. Highly recommended. Be aware that you will have only 6 towels per visit. Any additional towel will cost you $1.
