Where to Eat, Drink, and Snack in Germantown: A Local’s Guide | Eater Philly

"Obviously their baked goods are really good, but on the weekend they do this thing called Earth to Pizza where you can order pizza and take it down to Attic to eat; they do classics like a cheese or pepperoni pie, and rotating pies each week that feature local produce." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

How Merzbacher’s Bread Bakery Runs Philly’s Cheesesteak Scene | Eater

"A wholesale artisan bakery that produces roughly 10,000–12,000 pounds of dough each week, turning it into highly sought-after loaves, potato rolls, baguettes and a take on an English muffin dubbed “the Philly Muffin.” Chefs (including the operator of pop-up sandwich shop Frizwit) praise the roll for its structure and chew — firm enough to hold fillings while the interior soaks up meat juices, acting as both sponge and container — which makes it particularly well-suited for a classic Philly cheesesteak. Prior to the pandemic, about 75–80% of sales were to restaurants, but that mix has shifted toward roughly a 50/50 split with grocery-store distribution as demand grows; the bread is even stocked alongside national brands at stores like Giant Food Store. The owner emphasizes making a great product accessible to city and suburban customers, and small anecdotes — such as people following oven vents to ask if bread is sold there — reflect its local popularity." - Terri Ciccone

Google
I came today after seeing the listing for.Good to Go I wouldn't be able to pick up for tomorrow and saw that they opened at 4pm. It took a minute to figure out the exact location. The bread is warm and fragrant. I can tell its going to be delicious. I usually get my sourdough from Trader Joe's and love to make fresh homegrown tomato sandwiches with it. Decided to try Merzbachers and see what the French toast loaf was about since I'm craving French toast. The only complaint I have is that my sweet potato Pullman got smooshed and flattened cause it was at the bottom of the bag. No bueno.

Google
The best bread in Philly! Love that our favorite items are coincidentally vegan. Do yourself a favor and try the Philly Muffins ASAP and make sure your next burger includes the sweet potato buns. Always look forward to their stand at the Rittenhouse farmer's market. We appreciate all the thought they put into supporting the community and local sustainable practices.

Google
I buy an occasional loaf at the farmers market. Today I got the sourdough with sesame. I pause to say it . . . but it's as good or better than anything down a block at the competition on 19th Street. Excellent crumb and no holes so large that butter immediately pools underneath. Good work!

Google
Love the fresh, all natural (not that "natural flavor/flavoring" ingredient you see on the processed crap) high quality tasting breads and muffins and toast they have😉😋

Google
Their Garlic Herb Mashed Potato rolls were part of the holiday meals this year. So fluffy, yet substantial. Just delicious. Froze a pack, and they were just as good heated. Hope they appear every year. We're fans of their French Toast loaf & sweet potato rolls, too. (We bought these at A & N House of Produce)

Google
I got the Merzbacher's Sweet Potato Pullman bread. 😍 Never stop making this!! Amazing toasted! ❣️ Purchased at Kimberton's in Ottsville, PA. So good!! Will need to let their management know to keep ordering it. Just wonderful!!

Google
I'm a die-hard fan since the beginning. This is real, soulful bread, and the new one, (forget the name - with sweet potato and lentils), is just amazing.

Google
Wow, I saw your business highlighted on FOX29 this morning. I realized your company makes my favorite “Everything Philly Muffins”. I live in South Jersey and discovered your bread at MOMs Organic Market in Cherry Hill. I am so disappointed when I go shopping and it’s sold out. I would love to try your “Sweet Potato” bread. I haven’t seen that at MOMs, I have to ask MOMs manager to increase their selections and orders with you. Thanks for making good, wholesome breads.

Yelp
I've bought 2 loaves of their sourdough bread at Weavers Way Coop in Chestnut Hill. I find it outstanding. My 13 year old grandaughter gave it "thumbs up", and she's a pro when it comes to sourdough! Now my only wish for change is that is came in paper rather than plastic. OR, I may go directly to the bakery to purchase, and use my own re-usable bag.

Yelp
Philadelphia's best kept (vegan) bread secret. So if it is a best kept secret, why am I reviewing it at all to "ruin the secret"? Well they have too much bread and they deserve your patronization for a quality product in a working class neighborhood. Pictured is a combination of 2 TooGoodToGo orders. A few people had some one offs I think, but you are supporting a local business. You can even park temporarily and there is a pick up window from the outside. You don't enter the building. They have a sign on the door telling you to go to pickup window. Just get a TooGoodToGo if you want something but aren't sure what and don't care if they offer it. If you are one person, try to give extra to someone on the street or friends. I found this place on TooGoodToGo and the name caught my attention. I didn't go to it right away because it is a drive for me. But then fellow Justin B. Yelp Eliter mentioned this place to me too and then I am like it must be worth the trip. If he still doesn't have a review on this place, you tell him! Lol. I then told my Baltimore friend that I am gonna try to take him here next time when he visits. I also really hope my vegan friends will appreciate this bread a bit later on. Btw, as I have been repeating to some friends, Even Madonna supports bread lovers! (Rolls eyes and inside joke that may or may not be pictured)

Yelp
TLDR: must have amazing bread We stopped at Merzbacher's shortly after opening on a Sunday morning. There wasn't a line, but there was plenty of space if a wait was necessary. Prior to arriving, we read the menu over and over to decide what we wanted: Original Philly Muffins, Cinnamon Raisin Philly Muffins, Sweet Potato Buns and French Toast Loaf. Due to our early arrival, we were offered yesterday's bake ($1 off). We will be back. The bread is amazing and affordable.

Yelp
All of Merzbachers breads are wonderful, but the new sourdough loaf is absolutely heavenly...thick, crunchy, airy and oh, so deliciously sour.

Yelp
We are slowly slaying the bounty of breads bestowed upon us from our latest Too Good To Go order. This bakery isn't far from home but is in an area where I hadn't gone yet. 'Twas a bit of a busy afternoon, but I headed down the Boulevard toward Germantown. I parked where there was plenty of street parking and crossed the busy intersection. Having read reviews, I knew to look for a window when I walked up. There was already a woman there with her children so that made it easy to spot. I think she was picking up a TGTG too! Once my turn came, the young man handed me one of their menus and I knew that whatever happened, I'd get a loaf of French Toast, even if I had to buy it separately. When I said I was interested it, but here to pick up TGTG, the young man said he'd give me one! I came home with 5 unique offerings: original Philly muffin and cinnamon raisin Philly muffin, wheat threepenny loaf, French Toast Loaf, and a set of sweet potato buns. We've tried all but the sweet potato rolls and we LOVE this bread! The prices on the sheet were low, so if you're worried about cost, don't be.

Yelp
I drive past this building daily on my work commute and had to check them out when I finally saw an open sign. They have a small parking lot, street parking, and a little walk-up window where you can get fresh baked breads. I was surprised to see Philly Muffins (a square take on the classic English muffin) and was informed that Merzbacher's was previously called Philly Bread. On my first visit, I grabbed my favorite everything Philly Muffins and their French Toast Loaf, which is a sweet bread with cinnamon and raisins- it makes a great French toast! I have been working my way through their staples, and my favorite has been the malty grain bread, which is hearty and great for sandwiches. For Thanksgiving, they had a few specials including sweet potato challah (with and without cranberries) and rosemary focaccia. Our celebration was a bit small, so we only got to try the sweet potato challah, which was fun addition to our spread. The leftovers also made a pretty good French toast!

Yelp
I have really enjoyed their breads! Have tried all of them except the french toast loaf...not sure why... Anyway, just tried their pizza with kale. Yum! Was going to share it with my mom but rushed home to get back into my freshly shoveled out parking space. Let's just say, she may not get any...next weekend, mom. I'm very pleased with their products. Most definitely will be a regular customer. Glad they're in my neighborhood.

Yelp
For a year or two we occasionally got their Philly muffins at Whole Paycheck till I read the label and went to their website. One can order and go for a ride to a sketchy neighborhood that you can help improve by supporting opportunities for employment for the folks who live around there. When you pick up your order a two block walk from the Wayne Junction SEPTA station (hint hint you carless center city people) with street parking right in front you will walk up to a unadorned commercial bakery with real bakers sans accent français. Philly muffins both plain and everything are delicious. They recommend you freeze them so they last longer and that's a great idea. We've also tried French toast loaf which is also awesome no matter if you eat it plain right out of the bag, toast it, or Hey! Idea! Make it into French Toast! The malt bread is wonderful as well. Everything about this place is great, including the people who work there, but the bread isn't cheap. Guess what? You get what you pay for whether you buy it at cafe chi chi near your home or order on their site and go down to the bakery. I think either way it's worth it and you will love the bread.

Yelp
This is a great place to get breads from! They have a huge variety and I haven't had anything I didn't like so far

Yelp
The plain philly muffin was dry, tasteless and very hard, I tried it numerous times. It reminds of of something a homeless shelter I volunteered at served to their clients to dip in their soup. I also tried the everything muffin, it smelled so strong thru the unopened bag, not a big everything person but to have to throw it out to not have a stinky house when it was unopened is bad!

Yelp
"EARTH TO PIZZA - WE NEED YOU PIZZA!" Light, fluffy, crunchy crusted, cheesy goodness. Pizza was love at first bite! And I've been a fan of Philly Muffins for a few years but I hadn't realized how many other types of bread Merzbacher's makes. The bakery in Germantown has a much wider selection then I've seen anywhere else and at a slightly reduce prices too. Love it.

Yelp
Merzbacher's (everything) Philly Muffin became an instant favorite! Kind of like an English muffin but much more substantial and toothsome. Started as a morning item toasted with veggie cream cheese and a tomato slice, perfection! This evolved into a fried egg sandwich with gooey cheese. Then lunch became an option as a turkey/Swiss cheese melt - the PM is pretty versatile complimenting a variety of different preparations. However you eat a Philly Muffin, you'll surely find a favorite way!
