Mesa Mezcal Opens In Irving | Eater Dallas

"Newly opened inside the Westin at the Irving Convention Center, this all-day Mexican restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily (with weekend brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The kitchen is led by Germain Haro, formerly executive chef at Baltimore’s Renaissance Harborplace, and the menu features regional and inventive dishes such as Veracruz-style whole fish, avocado-topped huaraches (grilled masa cakes) and an Oaxacan burger made with a chorizo patty topped with pineapple and pepper jack cheese. The beverage program emphasizes agave spirits, offering more than 50 tequilas and mezcals alongside cocktails." - Amy McCarthy

This is my go to happy hour spot in the Toyota music factory area. They have a great happy hour menu with food and drinks. The bartenders are always really nice - Alan is our go to! Their margaritas are good, wings, and steak quesadilla was phenomenal. On Mondays, they hosted mah-jongg Mondays that have guided lessons or open.

Mesa Mezcal is attached to a hotel, so I wasn’t expecting five-star dining service—but they still managed to fall short. We had a Thursday night reservation, and the restaurant wasn’t overly busy. It took over 10 minutes for our server to take our drink order, and another 20+ minutes for the drinks to arrive. To their credit, the drinks were great, and our server Edgar was very kind and apologetic, explaining the bar was backed up with a large group. The food, however, was another letdown. My salmon was overcooked, and the lava cake dessert was also dry and overcooked. For the price point, I expected better execution. Overall, the atmosphere was nice, and the service was friendly, but the slow pace and poorly prepared food made the experience underwhelming. Mesa Mezcal has potential, but it needs work to live up to its price and setting.

Incredible service! My husband and I came for our anniversary, and I have never been received so well at a restaurant! When I arrived and said the name on my reservation, she immediately knew who I was and what we were there to celebrate, they even had a bottle of champagne on ice for us! Our waiter was great, the hostess was great, the experience was just GREAT! I feel like I haven’t had service like this since before Covid and it is such a relief. Thank you for making our night special instead of just a regular dinner like any other night! PS I had the chili and it was super yummy with large chunks of steak in it 🤤

Been meaning to try this place for awhile. It's kind of tucked away from everything else, so it can be easy to overlook. They have a happy hour, where I got the house margarita for $6. There cocktail menu looks like they have some interesting choices, so I need to come back and try some of them. The outside patio area is really nice. I love all of the couches

From the moment you step into Mesa Mezcal, located in the luxurious Westin hotel in Las Colinas, Texas, you are transported into a world of authentic Mexican cuisine and culture. This restaurant is a true gem, offering an unforgettable dining experience that is as vibrant and rich as the country it represents. The ambiance at Mesa Mezcal is nothing short of spectacular. The decor is a tasteful blend of traditional Mexican elements and contemporary design, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The restaurant is spacious, yet intimate, making it perfect for both casual dinners and special occasions. The menu at Mesa Mezcal is a culinary journey through Mexico. Each dish is a masterpiece, beautifully presented and bursting with flavors that are both bold and nuanced. The chefs have done an exceptional job of balancing traditional Mexican recipes with innovative culinary techniques. The result is a menu that is familiar yet exciting, with dishes that cater to a wide range of palates. The standout for me was the Mezcal Marinated Steak, a dish that was tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The accompanying sides were equally impressive, complementing the steak beautifully. The Guacamole prepared tableside was a delightful spectacle and tasted as good as it looked. The Tacos Al Pastor, with their succulent pork and tangy pineapple, were a revelation. The bar at Mesa Mezcal deserves a special mention. The selection of Mezcals and Tequilas is extensive, and the cocktails are expertly crafted. The signature Mezcal Margarita is a must-try, with its smoky undertones and refreshing citrus notes. The service at Mesa Mezcal is top-notch. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about providing an exceptional dining experience. They are more than happy to guide you through the menu and make recommendations based on your preferences. Mesa Mezcal is a shining star in the Westin hotel's culinary offerings. It is a place where the food, ambiance, and service come together to create a dining experience that is truly memorable. Whether you're a local or a visitor to Las Colinas, Texas, a meal at Mesa Mezcal is an absolute must.

Went here during Texas Frightmare Weekend. I got a burger and fries. Burger was pretty good the fries were superb. Waitstaff forgot me a few times like when they said they would get me more ketchup but got back to me later

Google
Restaurant has really improved over the years. Been coming here for almost 3 years and the place continues to become more and more polished. Bartenders are always awesome and friendly! If you’re looking for a place to try or learn about mezcal, this is a great place!

Yelp
Came here for a happy hour during the week! And had a great old fashion for $7. The second one was alcohol which is probably great for most people I need my bitters and double lol! They had two flavor wings and both were good, the non buffalo was my favorite! Plenty of seats with open and nice ambiance

Yelp
My friends and I visited Mesa Mezcal before a concert at the Toyota Music Factory and had a great experience. We started with the Dip Trio (queso, guacamole, and salsa roja with tortilla chips). The guacamole had large chunks of avocado that made it a little tricky to scoop, the queso was tasty but not really warm, and the salsa definitely had more of a spicy kick than I expected. I was surprised to see Penne Pasta with Shrimp on a Mexican restaurant menu, so I had to try it for my entree. The serving was huge, with plenty of shrimp, and the presentation was really good. The real standout was the guajillo cream sauce. It was rich, flavorful, and a perfect match for the pasta, which was cooked just right. The cotija cheese on top tied the dish together. I will definitely order this again if it stays on the menu. Bryan, our server, did a fantastic job making sure everything was smooth and quickly fixed the small adjustments we needed. Overall, Mesa Mezcal was a great pre-concert choice with good food, generous portions, and attentive service. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Stayed at the hotel for a work trip and was able to try a few different times and services. Breakfast is great service and excellent food. Apple smoked chicken sausage and breakfast quesadilla were excellent. Avocado toast was good, but I would try something different next time. Happy hour: A good margarita for $6 and some other solid menu options I did not sample. Evening drinks: We stopped by around 9:30 PM hoping for a quick nightcap, but were told they couldn't seat us due to being understaffed. From what we could see, the bar seating wasn't full and there were four employees behind the bar, which made the situation feel a bit puzzling. I do understand staffing issues can be tough. We ended up grabbing a drink across the street to wrap up the night.

Yelp
Mesa Mezcal is your standard hotel restaurant to make sure you have food available throughout the day. Nothing too crazy, just standard stuff. I had the veggie burger and a side salad. The dressing came out in a plastic packet and I wasn't a fan of that. I know it's all the same thing no matter if it came from a bulk jar of dressing or individual serving, but when I'm sitting down to lunch with friends and a bottle of wine, it was just weird. The bartenders are very attentive. If you want to sit and chat at the bar and have drinks, they will take great care of you.

Yelp
I stopped in with a friend after a conference at the Irving Convention Center. The entrance wasn't open from the outside so we walked through the hotel. We were immediately greeted and helped to available seats. We were just looking for a drink so we sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and helped me make my decision. I went with the pear margarita. It was delicious! We did not try the food, but if all of their drinks are that tasty, I will definitely be back!

Ryan M.

Yelp
Food and service was Terrible, everything was way overpriced. The margarita was ok but I definitely won't be back.

Yelp
VERY greasy. I liked their chips and salsa and that's kinda the saving grace here. Elote, beans and rice on the side of tacos were good. The tacos are served deconstructed with tortillas on the side. It was decent but at $21 I would expect way less oil/grease on the plate. Server was friendly and always there when we didn't need her but gone when we did. Not necessarily her fault but kinda frustrating. It was very loud even though there weren't a lot of customers. I wouldn't be unlikely to return.

Yelp
My waitress was awesome, the wine was excellent, and the ceviche was out of this world. Calm and relaxing atmosphere. The menu is somewhat limited and they are pricey.

S H.

Yelp
Had a new waiter, so service was extremely slow. Food was okay, typical tex-mex. I would have given 3 stars anyway for the slow service, but the server was nice - when he was there. Took off one star for noting we were celebrating 2 birthdays on the reservation, but no birthday desserts offered. Still it was a nice dinner, but what really put a HUGE damper on the evening was having to pay $12.99 to get out of the free parking garage! On the Mesa Mezcal website it states parking in the Westin garage is validated. When we got there, the parking attendant told us the free parking garage was across the alley at Toyota Music Factory. I knew this was wrong, so we drove around to the other side. There the attendant let us in, and when we asked about validation (paper tickets are not issued), he said he would be there until 8:00 to let us out. Finished dinner about 7:00, no parking attendant, but saw an employee from the restaurant walking in the garage. He told us if the attendant let us in, the gate should just open to let us out. NOPE! You're trapped with no way to get out except paying $13. Times THREE cars. Won't be back.

Yelp
This was a very nice restaurant that offered very delicious and delightful buffet food for Mother's Day. The workers were all very kind and helpful as well. The restaurant was very spacious, clean and well lit.

Yelp
We stayed at the Westin for Texas Frightmare and spent several hours a day and every meal at Mesa Mezcal. The food, drinks and atmosphere were great- but it was the staff that made it magic! The bartenders were all great, but the employee who charmed us all was Greatful! She took amazing care of us and was so incredibly kind! We'll definitely be back next year- we hope to see her again!

Sam D.

Yelp
So disappointed. Checked online to confirm their hours before we tried to go to Mesa Mezcal for a late dinner. Website says open to midnight, but we arrived 10:00 pm today (Thursday) only to be told they had just closed early.

Yelp
I ate here twice during my 6 night stay. I should have had more meals here as the local restaurants were just ok. I had a burger and salad one night , excellent. This morning I had an omelette and a side of sliced tomatoes and sausage. Excellent. Fresh and spot on. Quick service. Clean well , bright, and very nice atmosphere.

Jonathan R.

Yelp
I made a reservation for Valentine's Day as a promotion was being offered. The food was good but not worth the price that was paid. The service was very good and the drinks were very good. Lastly, when we arrived there was a live music so the ambiance was very nice. That only lasted 10 minutes and then it was quiet for the remainder of the night.
google avatar

Jaci G.

Yelp
It was nice and big, plenty of seating. The menu was not huge and had good selections. Wait staff was quick and friendly. Our table was right under the music speaker, which was a little loud for me at the moment, but the music was good.

Yelp
I have ate here several times in the past for breakfast. Excellent omelettes. But this time I decided to stay in and eat dinner. Be advised they close mid day and reopen at 3 pm I think. I started with a draft beer. Cold glass and very good beer, I prefer domestic and it didn't disappoint. My meal, I ordered a burger with a side salad. Burger was good , not great. I did enjoy my dinner. Service was good. Restaurant is clean.

Yelp
We popped in here this past Sunday for a friend's birthday party. The place is super convenient from just about any part of the city and has quick and easy free parking. We were there on a Sunday during the drag brunch, which was quite a performance. They had some very high quality entertainers who put on a wonderful show. While we didn't eat, they had a breakfast buffet and the plates our seatmates were bringing back looked delicious and nobody was complaining. We did have a couple cocktails, including one of the best Bloody Mary's I've ever had in my life. Highly highly recommended. The staff was engaging, fun and efficient. We'll definitely be coming back here for a meal at some point.

Yelp
This is a very nice restaurant located inside the Westin. I came in very tired and hungry because I was at a convention all day. Ozzie and Allan provided me with very friendly service at the bar. I ordered the street taco platter and a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. Both were very delicious. I'm staying at the hotel, so I will definitely be back tomorrow to try an espresso martini!

Yelp

Yelp
Incredible staff ran by an incredible management team. The chuleta pork chop is phenomenal! Bar team is very knowledgeable and attentive.

Yelp
This place is in Westin hotel and you would expect a reasonably well run restaurant. Outside they advertised their Happy Hour deals and on Tuesday it was $2.00 Tacos and $5.00 margaritas. Apparently the had changed the price to $4.00 but didn't change the sign. Someone with an attitude wouldn't honor the price which was ridiculous and then i have an attitude because integrity is a big deal. Business 101 is if a price is posted wrong just honor it. This 2 BUCKS! A manager in training honored the price which is why she is a manager. That said the tacos were fair at best. I wouldn't return.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, but took 10 mins for someone to seat me (no line) and after eating it took 30 mins for someone to bring me the Check.

Yelp
The mole chicken dish was good, but we had a weird experience; our waitress asked us not to order our entrees at the same time at the appetizers as it would inconvenience her. This was a first for us, and it's prevented us for going back. The chips and salsa should be free at a Mexican restaurant...
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
Drinks are very good but pricey. Clean fun atmosphere. Plenty of servers to get drinks and food fast. Needs to be open later butvthe staff stayed late for our group. We will come back because of the convenience

Sahaja M.

Yelp
We are group of 5, there for happy hour. Ordered chicken nachos and wings. They are good. Ambience is great. Service is good. Will come back soon.

Yelp
The service was good. The vibe was good. The Burgers were delicious. The drinks were wonderful. The Friday Flight was a real treat.

Yelp
This is review is for happy hour. This is a beautiful restaurant located and the westin hotel. They had great prices for happy hour and it doesn't end until 7pm! The food was ho-hum; some traditional items but they mixed they Latin flavor mark. They could have put more Latin inspired drinks on their menu to go with the food and maybe that would have made-up for the food Also, they didn't have any latin music playing, well if they did, it was so low we could hear it. The restaurant was empty and it didn't make you want to come back. They need to spice it up A LOT

Yelp
This is the Westin Hotel restaurant (dinner and breakfast). While it has a very high-end look with lots of wood, exposed rebar and large, comfortable tables, the food and service are lacking. The food is very limited. Breakfast potatoes are squares and and not well fried. Clearly not from scratch (IMO) and just baked here. There are no fresh juices (a must for a modern hotel in this Health world). My potatoes were served without the condiments (came 5 min later) and soon were cold. The portions were nice. My avocado "masa" toast had great guacamole on it, and was well seasoned with lime juice. My fav item out of 2 meals. For lunch I had chips & guac, house shredded cabbage/corn salad and smashed black beans. Loved the salad, it was like a Fresca slaw. The beans were whipped and dry, not smashed. Sadly, all the salsa have mole in them which is just not my flavor profile. To be honest, the guacamole was at least 2 1/2 cups. There was no smaller order which was frustrating. The salsas were in tiny cylindrical containers making it impossibly messy to get a tortilla chip in. All the wait staff were nice but at lunch the wait for a first visit was noticeably long and the hostess came by twice to give me updates on the server. This menu needs about 3-5 more healthy, vegan, items on it. And the breakfast needs a more American standard option in addition to the Southwest Mexican foods. Mediocre to okay. I'd not come here if I weren't staying at the hotel.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Very convenient location when you are going to the convention center. Clean area, friendly staff. We went for the breakfast buffet. While the home fry potatoes were bland and cold, all of the other food was great!

Estrella G.

Yelp
A friend and ate here on a Saturday afternoon. The food was good. We had the queso fundido, Birria tacos and chicken pozole. I also had a spicy margarita which was fine. The place was clean and well decorated. The complaint I have is that when my friend tried to get our bartender, Maxwell's, attention he said "give me a sec" and made us wait until he was finished texting. Probably a minute or 2. Then said "oh it was work related." There were 2 other people sitting at the bar. Not one person at a table.
google avatar

Erika S.

Yelp
Food was excellent, but they seemed understaffed. Your waitress was super nice but she was trying to handle the whole restaurant. I had the tacos and it wasn't what I expected but delicious. The happy hour queso and salsa was really good, huge portion of both, highly recommend. We would go back, but hopefully they will be better staffed.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
Great bar and restaurant in the Westin. The street tacos were really good. Highly recommend. Excellent service as well.
google avatar

Robert D.

Yelp
In these times I usually leave a 25-35% tip and tonight is the first time I have ever left a -0- tip. Service was an absolute zero. There was maybe 3 tables and 4 people at bar. The hotel is great, but would never eat here again.
google avatar

Sung L.

Yelp
I was at the Fiberfest at the Irving Convention Center, this place is right next door. So I gave it a try. I wanted lunch at 1pm, silly me. They only have brunch selections until 3pm. And when I say brunch, it's more like breakfast. But I gave it a try. It was ok. I had the croquettes, they were a little sweet. The chip were decent. The salsa was green, I like the green ones. So I ate a lot of the chips and salsa. Good thing, the main meal was only so so. My companion and I were able to have a nice conversation while we ate, so that was good. I do have to hand it to our waiter, he was very good about getting us in and out as soon as possible. We had told him we only had a limited amount of time to grab something to eat. He is the only reason this place isn't getting only two stars.
google avatar

Cris B.

Yelp
The food is delicious, service was great and the sauce awesome!!! I had the nachos with chicken but all the food ordered at my table was highly appreciated.

Kayla D.

Yelp
The bartender Kenneth is amazing. Very knowledgeable and accommodating! Wish they were open until 2.

Yelp
When your hostess completely abandons you (like literally takes the menus away and walks off with no other comments) when you say, "Can we sit on the patio?" And then your "server" comes over after sitting for 15 minutes and starts the conversation with, "Let me tell you what NOT to order," it pretty much sets the tone of an unpleasant dining experience and that your staff have zero respect for the place they work. Recommended mole nachos (which come with a pondering of mole?) and a chicken wrap advertising avocado aioli with zero actual aioli and ore ida fries. We witnessed multiple parties walk out due to lack of attention/service expressing they'd rather go to McDonalds. Server completely forgot about a drink order, tried to make up by bringing one of two forgotten drinks, never bothered to bring the second even after promising it was on its way. Aside: let's revisit basic math here, more alcoholic beverages on your tab = bigger tip for you. And you still can't deliver bc you care that little. Asked me completely irrelevant questions after we already ate about the "spicy-ness" (glad that wasn't an initial concern) of the meal, and the "managers" wander around pretending to care but don't check in with you and then complain about YOUR complaints on service ... meanwhile random busers ask to remove random single items from your table in such an odd way that it makes you feel there's a quota to remove a solitary table item to earn their hourly rate ... can't even really fully describe such a bizarre experience. Food and drinks mediocre. Service deplorable. Management = hopefully being replaced? Or trained in basic customer service? Y'all are losing so much money, I want to nominate you for Bar Rescue bc it was that big of a joke.

Yelp
Located in the Westin in Las Colinas this Tex Mex restaurant has great food and cocktails. I was able to get a sneak peek of their new brunch menu items. The Chicken and Waffles with Cholula syrup is so delicious! The nachos are meaty and cheesy and they are served in can so it's fun to have the waiter lift up the can and drop the nachos onto your plate. They also have happy hour 7 days a week!
google avatar

Savannah B.

Yelp
Went to the drag brunch this Sunday... had so much FUN and the buffet is nice! Nicole is an amazing server!

Jeff C.

Yelp
Weird take on Mexican or Tex-Mex or Fusion or whatever you want to call it. They are all about the atmosphere that is kind of modern retro and this is higher priced than Mexican Sugar without the food quality. Our waiter was nice enough, even promoted the Sunday Brunch Drag Show??? Seriously? I would have given this 2 stars had the tab for two people with two drinks not been $128.00 with mediocre food.

Raysa S.

Yelp
Only reason I am giving a 3 and not a 4 or 5 is because of the customer service lacking attention and detail. I am currently handicapped using crutches. I came in from the back side entrance since my friend who drove could not find parking and it was only 4:30pm before any rush hour started. I waited inside on a seating area next to the bar that's like a round couch. I was waiting for my friend to find parking as I waited inside. I had 4 different waiters pass me by regardless if I'm just seated, no one even gave a look of acknowledgement that I even exist. Get you in mind the place was super empty. I did not get a hello, can I get you something or even offer a table. If I have to find a seat on my own when my friend finally got inside that already screams disaster on customer service. If we chose to eat and drink here out of all the other places in that plaza that has great choices and we chocks had chosen and this is how you are ignoring people even when they come in. Then there is a problem. Especially since it was empty. Now only reason I gave it an 3 star and not a 0 star is because they have a nice deal with tacos Tuesday. Each taco is $2 or get 3 for $10 or get 3 tacos and 3 tequilas for $15 So of course I got the combo. I got the chicken, carne asada and pork tacos. The chicken to me was the best because it was very flavorful and the sauces were the best. The pork taco tasted good but the pork it's self had no real flavor the ingredients gave it's little something but it was also dry. Rule one with pork do not let it get dry! If not it's like eating stale meat. The service once seated. On my own was what ever. Waiter left us a bottle of water and chips and only came back to hand out checks and take the plates. On top on that although I had ordered on my own and my friend as well we got charged 18 percent service group free. We ordered our food and sat alone for over 30 plus minutes. I was even done with food and a few other Co workers sat by us and the service charge put this in. Even though I was there way before they came. I get it you have to make money on groups but I was not even part of it either. So I did not appreciate that If there is other locations I will go visit those. But did not care about the lack of attention and detail in this location in Irving.

Yelp
This is my first time here but so far I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I am looking forward to future experiences with great expectations.

Whitney A.

Yelp
We walked over from the convention center to grab a drink, chips and salsa but were never waiting on in the bar area. We went to the bar to order our drinks, they never brought us chips. We didn't make it a big deal. Went to lay the tab the bar, which took forever as more affluent clients obviously took priority. When we cashed out my husband handed him $100 bill and the bartender responded with "we aren't a bank". I almost lost it on the guy, but let it go, paid with a card and stiffed him on his tip-that he didn't earn to begin with. All while this was happening another bar top table was brought chips, a trio of salsa, guac and queso. All this to say, we were profiled by the staff, treated with bias bc we weren't dressed to the nine's and looked "blue collar". We won't be back, and will take our government issued food stamps to another establishment.

Yelp
We had a reservation here for 10 people for a birthday celebration before a show last night. Our waitress, Lisa, was extremely distracted the whole time and was not capable of handling a party of ten. It took 15 minutes to get one drink- i finally went up to ask another associate and the drink had been sitting there on the bar. She also messed up several other orders and we ended up just tabbing out- she made us miss our shuttle so we had to reschedule. When I placed the reservation I let them know that it was for a birthday. Nothing was done or even mentioned about it. Something that 3 of us ate made us all sick as well- we believe it was the flautas, which are actually not flautas at all; They are taquitos. Needless to say we will not be back to this restaurant, there are far too many better options within walking distance. Skip it!

Vandi L.

Yelp
New restaurants usually charge out of the gate, with minor bumps along the way, and then stabilize. If this experience was charging... I'm glad I won't be there for the stabilization. If you start out the gate by having to explain your new... Two of us ordered the prawns...completely mush. I had an upcharge for a salad, at $5 for two 3 inch wedges of lettuce, in lieu of the rice. It only took me 42 minutes to get my drink and yes, they still charged me for it. To say the least, I'm all for giving places a shot, but this one won't be revisited. On the positive the staff were nice, but not attentive.

Yelp
Was a great atmosphere and tequila selection. I was educated on the correct way to drink tequila and enjoyed great Mexican food. I would like to thank Ali for a phenomenal experience. I will return because of you, Ali! Thx ~ Nanette ~

Yelp
My mom and I had Saturday brunch here, during our stay at the Westin, and it was great! We shared the huaraches and fresh fruit plate, both of which were healthy and delicious. Coffee was also quite good. The decor is, like the rest of the hotel, beautiful. I hope to try their lunch or dinner if we go back again!
