The Best Cuban Barbecue In Hialeah

"Hialeah loves its local feuds and when it comes to barbecue, everyone has strong opinions. Mesa’s and Las Viñas have always been the top competitors. Luckily for us, competition breeds really good food. The pork here is fantastic, but go early (especially on the weekend) because they tend to run out of stuff by the end of the day. This pork shines thanks to the mojo full of that garlicky, acidic flavor. They also have pork ribs, which are not common in Cuban barbecue, so definitely try those too. And their homemade Cuban tamales are a perfect side to all that pork. They are thicker, made with fresh masa, and stuffed with (you guessed it) more pork." - yuliet llanes

I have been ordering takeout from this place for a year now and their food has been consistently good. It’s a traditional Cuban place and the quantity that you get comes in generous portions. Their pork was expertly seasoned and juicy. The guarapo juice wasn’t that great. It tasted old. I won’t be getting it again. Besides that, the food is pretty good.

One of the most fresh chicharrones and largest portion serving 👌 is in this hidden gem in Hialeah. Gotta give em a try.

Google
Michelín chef to be??? The most delicious Cuban food in Miami!! Shakes were awesome! Themed with Cuban pictures and wooden chairs! I wanted to give it only 4 starts because of the very loud noise of someone butchering on a metal table but the food was so delicious I thought it deserved the whole 5!

Considering the length of time I have lived/worked in Miami, I think some might call me a Miamian. Even though my Spanish needs a lot of work, I have tried to find out more about local i.e. Cuban cuisine. That being said, I have tried to eat at a variety of Cuban restaurants, from the touristy to the hole in the wall establishments. After this weekend, I think it's safe to say I may have found the best Cuban food in Miami. On the edge of Hialeah, is the gem called Mesa's BBQ. Upon entering the building, there is a small outdoor seating area and a large take away window. The smell of roasted meat and the sounds of fresh lechon being cut into manageable parts greet you as you walk through the door into indoor restaurant. I had to work with my best Spanish to communicate with the staff, but one of the waiters was kind enough to help me through my struggles. We started with some freshly made pineapple juice, perfect for the heat that was building outside. Next, we ordered the Costillas de Cerdo ( Baby Back Ribs) con arroz amarillo (yellow rice with pieces of pork) and a traditional dish called fufu, which is pounded half ripe plantains, with deep fried chicharron (pork belly) pieces on the top. We also ordered a side of the chicharron and yuca (cassava). The chicharron was the best I ever had. There was a great balance of meat and fat, and it was perfectly fried so that it was crunchy but not stiff. It was salty enough that paired excellently with the semi sweetness of the fufu. The ribs were roasted to perfection. The meat fell off the bone and was seasoned, I think with Mojo, which is a citrus based marinade used for many Cuban meat dishes. The portions were huge and easily shareable, even though you probably wouldn't want to, because of how good it all tasted. Even though I was stuffed, I had to try the Buñuelos (pound and fried yuca in a light syrup with anise) for dessert. They were amazing!!! I plan to brush up on my Spanish a little and head back down there with the rest of my family for more of the most delicious Cuban food I have ever eaten. Hope to see you there.

Google
Mesa BBQ has been a longstanding establishment from my childhood. They offer reasonably priced Cuban cuisine that comes in generous portions. Their dishes are expertly seasoned, and their rice is consistently cooked to perfection – neither mushy nor undercooked. With competitive prices, particularly for catering services, they provide fast and friendly customer service. It's an excellent choice for an affordable lunch or a family dinner option.

Yelp
I called to place an order over the phone for catering and the assistance was excellent, I needed to cater for about 75 people and they advised on affordable options and what was the best way to place an order for that amount of people. I will add that even if you have 75 people showing up, you can say 50 people and it's still more than enough food! In addition to the abundance of food it was delicious ! Everyone was asking where we ordered from and some people were even familiar with the taste! Thank you Mesa BBQ for helping us host!

Yelp
When I was a little girl, this Cuban restaurant wasn't even five minutes away. Then they moved to the other side of Hialeah and it definitely killed how often I went. Whenever I'd go, it'd be to pick up food at their window and it was always with my mom. After her passing a few years back, I had only gone a couple of times until this past Friday. It was the first time I went in two or three years. So long had it been that I forgot more or less how to order. I ended up having quite a few questions, but the employee who attended me was friendly and handled all my questions with ease. I ended up deciding to go against my norm here and went for a completa with ropa vieja, white rice, and yuca. I also got a tamale and a bag of mariquitas (or plantain chips to go). This massive lot of food cost me $17 and what's more amazing still is that I got three meals out of it. This is a major bang for your buck! I do have to say though that they're ridiculously popular and I spent half an hour just waiting to order. They probably need to organize themselves better in this regard, especially as now they're on Uber Eats, too, and it gets confusing where to order, where to pay, where to pick up, etc. That and being in the midst of Hialeah, I do wonder how many English-speaking customers they get and how they manage. The food and prices are great, but I'm not sure I would tell someone who doesn't speak Spanish to patronize this restaurant. Communication might be a problem. Very pleased I returned though. The food was tasty and so fragrant that the day after when I reheated my leftovers and my boyfriend smelled them, oh boy. Ditto with his roommate. Needless to say, I will try to return sooner rather than later as I have others whom I'd like to share the deliciousness with.

Yelp
We ordered turkey, yuca, plantains, moro and pork for our holiday party at work. The food was hot, fresh and delicious when we picked it up and all 300-400 employees were very happy with the food. Everyone kept asking where we got the food and saying how good the pork was. I personally loved the pork, especially the crispy skin!! Yum!!! Prices were reasonable, especially since we were on a tight budget to feed a lot of people!! Thank you Mesa's BBQ for making our holiday party a success!!

Yelp
First time there. In at 5 pm on a Friday to eat in. Large takeout line but the dinning room was almost empty. The only server was Rolando and he did not speak or understand English. I ended up going around to the takeout area and ask a lady for help. Rolando came around and she gave him my order. I was looking for Roast Pork with crispy skin, grilled onions, black beans and rice and yuca. Sounds like they roast pieces of pork, not the whole pig so you may not get crispy skin. I could make a meal out of crispy skin and hot sauce. I was very happy with what he brought and a few minutes later I was SUPER happy when he brought me a slice of pork with crispy skin. Rolando was determined to make me happy. All the food was well cooked, flavorful and a good portion. $ 10.95 I ordered 2 large chicharrones to go $12.40. A 15% tip was added but I gave him more. He did a great job. I will be back..

Yelp
It is a Cuban food restaurant, the food quality is good, the service is no bad and the Ambiance is acceptable, but could be much better

J K.

Yelp
The food and service was good. Their portions are big and there is plenty of options to choose from. I will definitely come back to try more items. My favorite was the chicharrones and least favorite was the tamales.

Daniel M.

Yelp
Best chicharrones hands down, eat them there fresh if you can, you won't be disappointed

Yelp
Reliable, authentic Cuban food. Reasonably priced. Ordered for New Year's Eve and everyone loved the food.

Yelp
This is my go-to place to order food for any party I am throwing. Even my own wedding. My husbands only request for our wedding is that we serve Cuban food. So naturally I called Mesa's. They were so helpful and accommodated my crazy request just 4 days before our event. And even made the food earlier than their normal pick-up time because I needed it and they're awesome. My guests were scraping the plates from how much they loved the food. I ordered ropa vieja, congri, arroz con pollo, y plátanos maduros. They have delicious food at reasonable prices. I recommend them to everyone I know!

Daisha M.

Yelp
Ran into this place by accident while was hungry after my tattoo, It is located right next to made in dade tattoo shop in hialeah. I was in the mood for cuban food and this hit the very spot. I had their pechuga de pollo con arroz blanco, frijoles, y maduros dulce! It was delicious and the service was great. They have other options like different sandwiches and different entree meals. It was perfect, I will be back to try something different!

Yelp
The pork here is exquisite. This place can legit throw down some authentic cuban food, especially pork. the Puerco ahumado & Puerco asado are both delicious. Great prices for large quantities of food.
google avatar

Adriana B.

Yelp
The food here is awesome and has a great taste not to mention the prices are affordable! My family and I have been ordering here whenever we have a party or are celebrating a birthday. So far the best from what I've tasted is the arroz imperial and and the masas de puerco just make sure you order it lomo style that's the best meat from the pig. I will definitely be ordering from here again

Yelp
Mesa's BBQ cooks up some of the most succulent and out-of-this-world pork you will ever taste. Hands down. Specializing in Cuban Guajiro recipes, Mesa's BBQ breaks away from the hundreds of competitors thanks to its main focus: flavor. This family-owned restaurant has been grilling pork in Miami since the early 90s and has grown to be one of Florida's best BBQ spots. The house speciality -- anything and everything pork -- is Cuban food at it's best.

Yelp
I feel like such a tourist when I visit my in laws. Apparently one of the family members told them they needed to try this place so of course we ventured out to get them una completa. Translation special of the day which consist of a protein and two sides which feeds 2 and you will still have leftovers for the next day. The lechon (pork) is cut into pieces once you order. You will be asked if you want mojo, which is a marinade made with onions, garlic and sour orange. We ordered Moro and Yuca as sides. The Moro tasted great and Yuca was nice and soft and mojo was garlicky and tangy as it should be when done correctly. This is a no frills type of place which serves great lechon.

Yelp
I ordered here this weekend for an Ugly Sweater party and the food was okay. The price was good and they definitely delivered way more food that I asked for, however, the taste itself was nothing out of this world. I would opt for Palacio de los Jugos next time, however, could just be a personal preference. They are a little scarce on the "mojito" which is my favorite part, and it ended up leaving the meat a bit too dry. All in all, wouldn't try again but wasn't bad for the event I was having. Customer service was okay, at best. Ran by mostly men who were a bit unprofessional in calling me "mi vida" and "mi amor" in every sentence. Felt a little odd to me.

Yelp
Place is as Cuban as you can get stateside. Great service and large selection on the menu. Could use a facelift but the leatherback chairs and tables are a great touch. Had the Barrigada (basically large pieces of roasted uncut bacon) with morros (black beans and rice cooked together) and fufu (plantain mash)...food was superb. I mean crazy good. Each piece of pork belly was cooked and seasoned to perfection and the crackling skin on top had the right amount of crunch and flavor. It was also too much food. The Plantains were on the sweeter side but great and the moros was just right. Oh and that large portion I couldn't finish was about $12.00...highly recommend and I'll be back.

Yelp
Great spot if you want some cuban food. The chicaronnes are an absolute must (they chop it up in front of you). The batitido de mamey too is on some next level ish. Very good on the pricing and portions. 1 completa could feed about 3 normal people.

Maria R.

Yelp
Best chicharrones best mariquitas best congri best yuca con mojo best barrigada best fufu de plátano best everything to be honest, been their customer for many many years, you never get tired of their food, I give it 10 stars

Yelp
Went there to grab a quick snack but was on the phone and not really paying attention got inline and decided to Yelp it after I got off. Thank God! After reading the last review (thanks Dennis) started looking around. The place is gross, nobodies wearing a hair net, the staff is touching money with the same hands they touch the food with-got the hell out of there quick. If your in the area try someplace else

Alexandra U.

Yelp
First time eating and the last. Services need improvement and we weren't able to have a peaceful time eating since it felt like we were eating in the middle of a factory. When we asked the waiter why so much noise, she responded that they were chopping bacon and ribs. We thought may be the noise would go away but for the whole 45 mins that it took us to get the food and eat it, the noise had not decrease. The food was alright, nothing out of the ordinary. The chicken soups had small pieces bone that were annoying to pick out. Never coming back again.
google avatar

Al N.

Yelp
The owner is rude, confrontational and low class. The food is ok at best and the location is sub par and unclean. Avoid this place.

Lina D.

Yelp
My husband loves this place. way cheaper the palacio de los jugos and serves enough for three.
google avatar

Miguel R.

Yelp
The food is great no matter what you get. The lomo is outstanding and what I always order. Buñuelos for desert are great and authentic. The food is very fresh as they move a lot of food especially to go. Keep in mind this is not a fancy looking restaurant but you can't beat the food quality and prices. The wait staff is very pleasant too.

Frank M.

Yelp
Excellent cuban food. The masitas r to die for. The take out is also good. Lots of food for good price. The croquetas r good tooo.

Yelp
noticed mesa bbq showed up as closed - this was their old location on the east side of Hialeah.. they actually moved to the west side. it still is a very very casual place filled with delicious typical smells of homemade Cuban food. you want an authentic pork sandwich, this is your place... it is seasoned well shredded pork served on a nice size of Cuban bread with lots of onions and MOJO! (don't like onions u have to let them know) tamales here are so good too!!! good for a quick lunch w/o any fuzz or frills... just alot of napkins! Moro and fried pork chunks (masitas de puerco) are a favorite too.....
google avatar

Martin M.

Yelp
Wow!!! I love their lechón. They are an efficient producer of deliciously cooked pork, chicken, and beef. They also sell plantain chips, gooooooooooood with whatever else!!!:-). They have yuca, really good stuff. Mesa's great for beach days and cookouts. They save you the trouble of smelling like a cooked pig;-)
google avatar

Nelson B.

Yelp
If you really want to enjoy casual Cuban food, order the best tamales, carne de puerco asada o frita... the best chicharrones ever made and eaten ( not even in Cuba ) Caballero! Guys, this is the place!! No long speeches nor explanations! Just tel them what you want and they'll get it ready for you. Trey them for a home party and you are going to amaza your friends.
google avatar

Yisel C.

Yelp
I love this place. In the corner of my house. The food is always fresh and the servings are huge. With one completa two or three people can eat. My favorite thing from here is the tamales. There is no other place in hialeah that makes them this good. The prices are good but the service at the take out window is a little slow. Whenever i'm in a rush and don't have time to cook dinner this is my go to place.

Andrea G.

Yelp
Horrible!! Never again will I eat here!!! Their steak was thin, hard and no flavor -- the waiter did not know how to describe plates, he was clueless!

Maria C.

Yelp
I was so disappointed to find out they sold me bad rice. It smelled and tasted funny. When I confronted the owner he told me he sold me rotten rice and refused to refund my money. Needless so say I reported the restaurant to the Health Department.
