The Best Ethiopian Restaurants in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"Chef Meseret Asfaw serves her doro wat, zilzil tibs, and goren goren with a side of warm hospitality — her restaurant is a south Minneapolis favorite for good reason. Specialities here include the kikil, a beef stew bright with garlic and ginger; and the kitfto special of the day, served with three types of fresh homemade cheese, among others." - Ali Elabbady

I don’t know if my photos do this justice because I don’t have smell-a-vision. I loved everything about this place. I was a bit nervous that my take out was a quadruple order because of packaging - turns out they just care about presentation and making sure your food is separate, neat and palatable. We ordered the meat/ veggie combo for two people- it’s way more than enough and for an affordable price. Great little Habesha eatery.

Google
One of the best for Ethiopian Cuisine. The owners are super friendly and really care about your experience. The decor is actually pretty nice too they put a lot of thought into everything. They are pretty professional too across all groups of people. I loved it here and will be back!

Google
Really loved the food here. I got the Gored Gored and I loved it. It was really spicy, but it was still great. Like that they gave you goat cheese to cool you down as you ate it. Apparently I got told by a guy at the restaurant that I chose the spiciest thing on the menu, but anyways, it was still great and I loved it. The place is also really convenient to get to, both by bike and by transit, as this place is right along the 38th street bike lanes and the minnehaha avenue bike lanes, and it is right along both the Route 7 and Route 38 buses

Gored-Gored (ጎረድ-ጎረድ) and Kurte (ቁርጥ ከ አዋዜ ሰናፍጭ እና ቆጭቆጫ ማባያ ጋር) are my all time favorite meals in this place! This is a great restaurant for "Red Meat" lovers. The waitresses are polite and attentive during my multiple visits. The owners, Mr. Tadesse and Mrs. Meseret, come, greet and interact with customers on the dining table which shows genuine care. They truly care about the food they serve they check on you while dining. It is a family friendly restaurant welcoming all include kids. The place has two large screens dedicated to transmit live sports including the premier league.

Google
Amazing neighborhood gem in Minneapolis! We felt so welcome while at the restaurant—the owner has such a warm, kind spirit. Delicious Ethiopian food. Definitely get the veggie combo, which is big enough for two people (though it’s so good, if you arrive with an empty stomach you can finish it on your own). Will absolutely be back!

Google
Great laid back Ethiopian restaurant. Looks like you are in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 the smells are like you dropped in Addis Ababa the Capital of Ethiopia and somehow landed here hungry to eat. I was debating between the Doro or Beef Wot and got thd beef. It was great to taste that rich stew of cardamom cinnamon and spices. You could taste the beef, onion, fresh ginger, garlic, berbere (spicy) and butter. It was great with the butter and dipping the injera bread. The ginger tea was good too because it was so cold out. There is another Ethiopian restaurant across the street. Order one thing of the menu here and go across the street and try something different too. I think this one is more authentic. There were Ethiopian guys drinking coffee here for what it looked like several hours. The other one looked more catering to American people. I went where the Africans go 🤣😆😝

If you want to enjoy the food here, right-size your expectations. Be ready to wait and pay more than what's on the menu. The service was slow. We were the only folks dining in at the time and it took 40 minutes from ordering to getting our food. We saw two to-go pick up orders during the time we were there. It was the owner and two workers helping her so likely understaffed, which is not unusual during the pandemic. We were charged $2 more per dish than what was on the menu. I understand if there is a need to increase prices, especially during the pandemic, but update the menu, even if that means putting stickers with the correct price over the old price. Or at minimum, give customers a heads up when taking orders that the prices are higher than what's on the menu. We were going to order the chicken wings and fries for the kids. They didn't have chicken wings (no problem!) so we opted for just fries. We were charged $9.99 for only fries, which was the menu price for 8 chicken wings and fries. The food was decent (except the soggy fries), although I have had better at other Ethiopian restaurants in the Twin Cities. It's not horrible if you go in knowing the wait time and the fact that prices will be higher than stated on the menu. I understand the long wait time, considering they and many other restaurants are short-staffed right now. I understand the need for increased prices. I understand the supply chain issues so why they might not have what's on the menu. Go in with the right expectations We were caught off guard by the higher prices so left with a figurative bad taste in our mouths.

Google
Best Veggie Combo in the area! So good! Also loved our beef dish with egg. We came in for a group of 7 and the service was great. The owner is gracious and welcoming. We have been here several times and have recommended it to our friends.

Yelp
It's a little place with few customers and few employees, but big flavor. We shared a meat platter and it I liked it as much as any Ethiopian place at which I've eaten.

Yelp
Feeling for Ethiopian food? Then search no further- walk, run, take the Uber- JUST go!!! Such outstanding Ethiopian food! A friend and I went here for dinner and had such a fabulous experience. The food was seriously flavorful and well cooked. We got a mix of vegetarian dishes (lentils, potatoes, Spilt peas) and beef tibs. The beef was cooked so well and the flavors were bursting. Even though we were full we still kept eating and wanted more. We also had fresh ginger tea. Service was excellent and the owner greeted us and ensured we were enjoying our food through. The ambiance was very authentic Ethiopian with art work throughout and elements of Ethiopian culture infused. Hands down recommend- so worth the visit. I'll be back whenever work brings me back to Minnesota.

Yelp
The food is as good Ethiopian as I've had! I frequent this restaurant every time I'm in the Twin Cities

Yelp
This place is okay, but not great. The food was delicious, but portions were small. I had a wot dinner and left hungry. Also, service was slow and unaccommodating. I waited ten minutes to be seated when the place was nearly empty. They gave soda cans with no cup or ice. No napkins.

Yelp
I was craving Ethiopian food today. I typically go to Bole in St. Paul but due to the snow storm, I went to Meseret since it's closer to me. I ordered a to go and I gotta say I was very disappointed. I would give the food 0 star but given it 2 star because the old lady that runs the place was so sweet. I ordered the veggie combo and the whole food was cold. The injera was dried and was falling apart. One half of the food taste like it's going bad and the other half lacked flavor. I can tell it wasn't freshly made and was probably made a few days ago. I hope I don't get sick from it.
google avatar

Ifeoma N.

Yelp
The food was alright. Very spicy I ordered the doro wat- be warned that you get only once piece of meat (in my case a single drumstick) with lots of oily sauce and a ton of injera. Disappointing for a $16 meal.

Yelp
Meseret is our favorite neighborhood restaurant!! Went there tonight with my husband and our 7 month old baby. Super clean, comfortable, beautifully decorated dining room. It was quiet and the service was very responsive. And OMG the food was so beautiful, it looked like a magazine spread. We got the veggie sambusas, awaze beef tibs, and veggie sampler. The sambusas were fresh, warm and flaky and the filling was soo good. The awaze tibs are a favorite of ours-always great. The veggie sampler is always the star of the show. There was so much flavor and each dish tasted different. The owner is so lovely and you can taste her heart in every dish.

Rebecca B.

Yelp
I ordered the kitfo via Grub Hub. I was happy with the food from Meseret in the past, but the injera in this order was shockingly old and dried up with small pieces like one would find in a bag that has been ripped apart over tbe course of several days. I have never had anything like this coming from Meseret or any other Ethiopian restaurant in the Twin Cities!
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
We had a delightful lunch for 5. Lots of beef dishes. Our fave was the #1 chicken and the veggies and of course as much of the injera (bread) as possible! The place is run by a sweet older woman who cooks with love.

Deon W.

Yelp
Small family run restaurant with clean facilities and good service. Food was great and delivered hot and efficiently.

Yelp
Lovely meal served to us by the owner. We have never had Ethiopian food before, but it didn't disappoint! Delicious!! Also like the traditional Ethiopian decor on the walls - feels very authentic!

Yelp
amazing food, the owner is the sweetest woman & a fabulous cook! it's a must try spot!

Yelp
I live Ethiopian food. This was a convenient option near the Minneapolis VA that also delivered. Good injera and shiro. Recommended!
google avatar

Darius J.

Yelp
The restaurant is owned by a really nice couple. They helped me figure out a meal that would work for me as a single diner. I got to enjoy several of their vegetable dishes as well as a few of their meat dishes and I was very pleased with the experience.

Jennifer W.

Yelp
I got Zilzil tibs. The beef was cut into long spaghetti type pieces and was completely tasteless. I don't know how they make their injera but this was thick and didn't have the flavor or consistency of traditional injera. Huge disappointment and ended up throwing out my food.
google avatar

Sehaj S.

Yelp
Wow oh wow. This is the best Ethiopian I've ever had. Ordered the veggie combo and the cornice (like a non-veg combo) and was absolutely blown away by the flavor of both. This was a sampler of several Ethiopian dishes and each one was not just delicious, but you could tell the flavors were thoughtfully layered. I could taste each seasoning and vegetable. I ate waaaay too much and ended up on the couch with a stomach ache. Each dish can easily be shared by two people. I picked up takeout last night and a very nice woman (who I believe is the owner and chef) checked me out. It's clear this is a neighborhood place with a lot of love. I know there are several other Ethiopian spots to check out but I kinda feel like I just want to keep coming back to Meseret!

Yelp
Had a long layover at MSP and needed some lunch. This place came up on Yelp so we gave it a shot. Amazing Ethiopian cuisine and friendly service. We got the veggie combo. Highly recommended! We will come back our next time in town.

Yelp
Ethiopian food is one of my favorites. They are generally very veg-friendly. I love to try new restaurants, and I was very excited to try Meseret! Unfortunately for me, Meseret is not as veg-friendly as the other Ethiopian restaurants I have been to. We ordered both of their vegetarian meals. Yes, there are only 2 on the menu! (Which doesn't make sense because one is a sampler. Most restaurants sell everything on the sampler, or most of the dishes!) The food was very delicious. We ordered sambosa for appetizers, the veggie sampler, and shiro tegebino. The sambosas were very unique, and one of my favorite that I've had. I also had the ginger tea with my meal. It was delicious! The server was very kind, and brought everything with good timing. (Something you don't see much anymore!) However, by the end of the meal, the server was getting quite rushed. It took us over 15 minutes to get our bill; in fact, we just went to stand by the register to pay without getting it at our table. I had to knock on the kitchen door to get our bill. Overall, I would gladly try them again. Hopefully they will expand their veggie menu and work out the kinks in the service!

Nisha B.

Yelp
Delicious food! Ordered the veggie combo and everything was very fresh and delicious. The stuffed jalapeño was a great touch which I hadn't seen at any other Ethiopian restaurant I've been to. The ambience is great as well. They do offer outdoor seating and it is located next door to an antique shop so you can browse while you wait for the food. Also had a chance to speak to the owner and she is absolutely delightful and very sweet! I would highly recommend and will definitely be back even though I live about 1.5 hours away from here

William C.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was great. We stopped here randomly on a visit to MPLS and were very pleased!

Lisa S.

Yelp
Lovely welcoming place with excellent food. We had the doro- wat and the vegetable combo - everything was delicious! Great collard greens, lentils, beets and several kinds of beans and peas with interesting spices. Highly recommend!

Bree C.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! The family working was also very kind and sweet. We had Beef Wot and the Veggie Combo and were impressed with the portions and spice profiles of both dishes. We would also recommend trying the hot Ginger Tea and ordering extra Enjira.

Yelp
I love Ethiopian food and eat it often. I decided to try Meseret because I could get it delivered. I ordered the beef wot and veggie combo which states on the menu that it feeds two people. However, it definitely wasn't enough food for two people. The one dish itself was $34+ and most of it was injera. We love injera and the amount of that was plentiful but each dish had only one small scoop. Not enough for me and my son to share. There was a salad that was plopped on top in the same container but by the time our meal arrived it was wilted and mushy from the heat/steam of the hot food. Sadly we had to toss it. That's disappointing but not a deal breaker. The real issue was the quality of the beef wot. It was really chewy with over 90% of it gristle/fat. Unfortunately, we weren't able to chew it at all. The flavor seemed good but the meat inedible. The veggie dishes were really delicious but again just really small. The veggie Sambusa was good too. I hate leaving a bad review and hope we just got a bad batch but also feel like for what we paid I would expect better quality meat. Probably won't order from them again or will stick to veggie dishes and order separate rather than the combined dishes so no one's left hungry.

Yelp
We were told about this place by a friend who lives in the neighborhood. We looked through the menu and it all look delicious. Being we have been eating vegetarian for the month we ordered 2 vegetarian plates and the samosas. Samaosa were good, nothing super special. The vegetarian plates were enough for 4 meals...each. there is so much food in each Plate we ( family of 2 ) had 4 total meals. I LOVE their injera! Soft spongy sourdough yumminess. For the price and flavors this is a must try. It is a little spicy, but, nothing crazy. We will be going back soon.

Heather H.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly waitress/owner. The injera was so good! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful neighborhood restaurant with delicious food and wonderful staff. Just left and am already planning my next visit!
google avatar

Jeana H.

Yelp
My husband and I both ordered a veggie combo and beer. The food was fresh and delicious! The combo came with red lentils, shiro, beets, cabbage, potato & carrots, potatoes in a berbere sauce, and green lentils. It also came with a fresh stuffed jalapeño that I've never seen served anywhere else, but my husband loved it. The owner is a wonderful woman and clearly takes pride in her food and restaurant. Highly recommend!

Sandra L.

Yelp
Enjoyed an indoor dinner of delicious Ethiopian food. Injera just right, and ordered the veggie combo and a lamb dish.

Ann L.

Yelp
Sadly had a terrible experience trying this restaurant. I ordered delivery for my family, excited because we love Ethiopian cuisine. However, food was an hour late, cold and overcooked. The little meat in the Gomen Besiga was chewy. The little meat in the Quanta Firfir was so hard it crunched. Slices of rolled injera had soaked up all the sauce, causing a dry dish that lacked much other substance. Personally, I had the Veggie Combo, which seemed the best of our dishes -until I found a chunk of hard meat in it! Here's hoping I don't get sick. Would not recommend, especially for vegans/vegetarians.

Jacqueline R.

Yelp
Service was decent. Food was not as tasty as the other Ethiopian restaurants I have tried in Minnesota, Michigan, New York and Oakland. Seasonings need improvement.

T Y.

Yelp
We had a great dinner. Four of us shared the shiro fitfit appetizer - very fresh tasting, almost like a bread salad except w injera, turmeric, red onion and jalapeño (not spicy hot). Then came the veggie sampler, regular kitfo (raw) and ZilZil tibs. I've had better veggie samplers, but this one was tasty and had a lot of variety: mostly lentils and red or yellow split peas, plus beets and the collards as well. We were favorably impressed by the kifto, which was cool and creamy with a lovely mild spiciness, and was served on injera w homemade cheese on the side. ZilZil Tibs took the prize though, served sizzling hot, this beef and onion mixture was pure flavor nirvana, rich with homemade butter, laced with oniony goodness. We sampled both Ethiopian beers available, with the one in the green bottle our preferred choice as it was lighter and crisper than its malty alternative. A note on the injera - it didn't seem to have been homemade, as it was served cool and was a little dry, as though it had been in the fridge for a few days. Finally, I'll say our host, Meseret was a delight: cheerful and attentive, and she seemed genuinely happy to have us for dinner. When we arrived at 6pm on a Friday, surprisingly the place was empty, and we were a little worried for the business to survive. However by the time we left, there were three more tables and ten more patrons. Happy to see this place getting customers!

Yelp
Amazingly delicious food. Such rich lentils and potatoes in the veggie (vegan) combo. It looks like the owner is running back and forth from the kitchen, so the service is slow -- but the food is worth the wait! (Please come check it out so she can hire more staff!)
google avatar

Travis L.

Yelp
Some of the best Injera I've had in a long time. The Kai Wat was delicious but lacked a bit of meat compared to what I'm used to. Overall, fantastic!!!

Yelp
Currently dragging my jaw across the floor after my first meal here. This is my first time having Ethiopian food and I'm so glad that it was at Meseret. I ordered vegetable sambusa, vegetarian combo, and the kitfo special. When reading these items on the menu, there is nothing that talks about the injera that's included. I had to look it up because I was so mind blown, it's a thin spongey sourdough bread, and the vegetarian combo came wrapped inside of a generous potion of this pancake- like slightly sour bread. The seasonings in each dish is really what's keeping my eyebrows up - the vegeterian combo has drool inducing beetroot mix, savory and heart warming potato's in some sort of stew, addictive lentils and a salad with a kick to top it off! Wow o wow. The Kitfo Special is also unlike anything else I've ever tried. The lean beef has such a strong aromatic after taste that my exhales are making me smile! The veggie sambusas were 2 for $4 and were delicious I will be back again to try the Doro Wat the next time I'm feeling like treating myself to some incredible Ethiopian homemade cooking.

Muna M.

Yelp
The food here is amazing. The best Ethiopian restaurant in Minnesota. The owner who is a sweet lady runs the place and welcomes you so warmly. I usually go with the veggie combo and it never disappoints. The food is not greasy or too soggy. It is very well cooked and similar to a home cooked meal. Every time I come to Meseret I leave fully satisfied. I would a 100% recommended this place and trust me you will come back wanting more.

Arin B.

Yelp
Ordered take out from here and it was delicious. A great Ethiopian restaurant that seems to be cooked with care. We ordered the awaze tibs and the veggie combo and both were very tasty.

Tim B.

Yelp
Wow, it's been a long time since I've been surprised by something I've eaten at a restaurant. I saw a movie at the Trylon and stopped here for dinner after the matinee. I'm not a vegetarian, but so many people gave great reviews about the vegetarian plate that I ordered it anyway. Wow. Two bites in and I was stopped mid-bite as I realized that this was something really special. Special treat. After dinner I had a nice chat with the owner. Wonderful experience. Will return soon and often.

Resha B.

Yelp
Food is amazing, taste so authentic, like you are in Ethiopia. Thank you meseret for the best food and making it feel like home.

Joe B.

Yelp
I tried Meseret's restaurant for the first time last night (takeout, because COVID-19). It's super cute inside. The owner is really nice. And most importantly, the food is amazing. I had the veggie combo. No offense to a couple other awesome spots, but I'd say it was the best I've tried in Minneapolis!
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
Always delicious food and the owner is so sweet. We get the veggie combo w sambusas on the side and it is enough for two people to get full.

Nilsu A.

Yelp
Loved this place!! My partner and I ordered a veggie combo and lamb wot, both were exceptional! I especially loved the fresh stuffed jalapeno. We also had sambosas as appetizers which were best we've had in the Twin Cities. The owner was very kind and pleasant to chat with. We will definitely go back!

Nadine A.

Yelp
We got takeout from this restaurant today. Excellent food. We look forward to ordering from there again.

Georgina S.

Yelp
Ordered delivery-veggie platter. Perfect amount of food. Everything was delicious and hot when it arrived.

Ka Ying V.

Yelp
We did catering from Meseret for our 2018 MINN Summit conference. It was for a crowd of almost 200 people. Wow, I was so impressed by the quality and variety of options she provided. It easily the BEST conference lunch I've ever had. There were a few hiccups (gluten-free labeling, food not being quite ready on site -- so some of our volunteers had to help with prepping injera bread slices), but I am assuming that is because she was in the early stages of starting the company. I am sure things have been more professional since then. We rallied with them and it worked out great. I loved that we were able to support a small and local business. And have an amazing lunch in the process.

Chris O.

Yelp
Stopped in right before all the craziness of COVID set in. I'd never tried Ethopian food before so I have nothing to compare it to, but regardless, I was very impressed. Got the lamb wot and tried some of the veggie sampler of one of the people I was with, and both were absolutely delicious and huge portions. Our server, who I believe basically runs the entire place by herself including cooking, was so sweet, and showed us how to properly eat Ethiopian food (again, never tried it before!) She also brought plenty of injera (the Ethiopian flatbread) to go with the meal as well as extra for our leftovers. Very much looking forward to coming back here in the future!
google avatar

Judy A.

Yelp
I ordered food from here for the first time earlier this evening. Got the veggie plate and it was excellent. It was also a lot of food; I got it just for myself and now have enough food for a couple more meals. I picked up food. The woman- I think one of the owners- was great and so kind. My food was ready when they said it would be ready and the place was really sweet. I'll go back for sure again.

Emma P.

Yelp
This place is absolutely incredible! The staff is so lovely and the food is amazing. Super reasonable prices and you will leave with a full stomach! I will definitely be coming back many times in the future.

Rama K.

Yelp
The greatest Habesha food I've ever had. We had the veggie platter..everything on the plate tasted fresh and flavorful. I enjoyed enough to actually leave a positive Yelp review. Melikami migibi!

L Z.

Yelp
The vegetarian combination was fantastic! Many different dishes, all with great flavor! Even ordered more to go. Will definitely be back.

Nikole M.

Yelp
First time having Ethiopian food, got take out. Partner and I both agreed we loved it and will definitely be having again!
