8 Best BBQ Places in Dallas | Condé Nast Traveler

"The smell of pecan-smoked barbecue is the only indication that you have stumbled upon the right place. This cinder block building's to-go window usually has a line about a dozen deep, and most people are chowing down in their cars. Figure out whether you want beef, sausage, ribs, or a sandwich from the menu is on the exterior wall and take note of the "Can't wait? Don't order" sign. Your attitude? Meshack's ain't got time for that." - David Landsel, Diana Oates

Google
I’m in Dallas for a long-term work contract, so I have been trying as many BBQ places as possible.Meshack’s, although not a sitdown place, is still my favorite. Plan to wait in line, but it is worth it. I ordered the three meat combo with brisket, pork ribs, and sausage. I got the sides of beans and potato salad. Brisket was moist and flavorful. The beans are the best I’ve had in the Dallas area, with brisket mixed into them. Wonderful potato salad recipe if you like potato salad. All that cost me only $18. The only drawback for me is there’s no place to sit down there, you have to take it home, and no cold beer! Overall, this is my favorite over every other place. I’ve tried in the Dallas area.

Google
I am a big time Buc-ee’s chopped sandwich fan and this place serves as good as theirs. It’s tastes amazing, clean BBQ meat. The only off thing about this spot is the wait time. You gotta be early and wait at least 20 mins to get your order but it’s totally worth it. Would really appreciate if the management can put up a shed outside to save us from the scorching sun. Definitely going back again 🙌🏼

Google
Grabbed a half pound of brisket and links to have for dinner and, as always, it was delicious. The service by the family who own Meshacks is very warm and friendly. 100% recommend for awesome BBQ.

OMG!!! Wow it was Fantastic. Everything we ordered was Great. Just moved here, and was Driving and spotted and Smelled the Aroma.... Mmmm

Google
Parking at the shack is catch as catch can, and the price point on a very select, old fashioned 'cue menu about the best you will find in the country today. We opted for a pair of 3 meat platters at $16 per plate--lean brisket, ribs and rib tips, links, and the mandatory sides of baked beans and potato salad. The sides were sides, but Meshack's is definitely about the meat. The links had good snap and the ribs were well prepared, separating cleanly at the bite. Both had a flavor profile pleasantly tilted to the peppery side (just the way we like it). The brisket had nice bark and pink ring, but the central Texas rub didn't really kick in until we had them for dinner some 8 hours later. We were happy with the food here, and look forward to another visit. It was fun talking 'cue with Donna, who took good care of us during our visit-- our 99th BBQ stop in Texas, and the 399th nationwide.

Google
My wife ate here last year while visiting family. This year on her visit she brought some pulled pork back to Virginia, and let me tell you, worth it! Fantastic, even after a three hour flight! Don't miss.

Google
As always, the food was delicious and the service incredible. Run by family. I've been coming here for almost 20 years and never changes. Highly recommend if you want a good old fashioned BBQ

Google
I did nkt realize they were opened from Thursday to Saturday. However, I was purchased links today (Wed) and the owner was very friendly. He informed me of the hours of operation and he was in today because he had a catering job today. The links were very delicious and I will definitely return before returning to the East Coast.

Yelp
Best in garland tx. Lines be long but worth the wait. Staff cool. Wish they were opened longer

Yelp
Meshacks lack the aesthetics but always provide an appetizing meal. I usually get the rib plate and I love it. The combination of sauces used is 10/10! And the sides that complement the meal. The service is fast depending on when you go. I usually try to catch them when they first open to have faster service. However they lack the technology which is a bummer. I don't normally walk around with cash in order to pay at this establishment. I hope they get a card reader or something soon.

Yelp
Date night was almost ruined by the bad weather but my husband picked up bbq and brought it home. The portions were fair and sauce was awesome. My husband said the staff was friendly even though there was a lengthy wait due to the popularity of this pkace.

Tamara L.

Yelp
I ordered Meshack's for work to celebrate Summer and Juneteenth in my office. I called days ahead to place the order and then drove over to pay, in cash. I went back and picked up the food today. Everything was packaged nicely and ready to go when I arrived. All meats and beans were piping hot and potato salad nice and cold. I was also provided more than enough mild and hot barbecue sauce too. There was no need to reheat when I arrived to work with everything. Travis was a joy to work! He was very helpful in helping me decide best counts of everything to properly accommodate my team. I even ordered another sandwich when I picked up my order to take home. Everyone loved the food and I will definitely be ordering from here again. Thank you so much for taking care of me and my team!!

Yelp
Delicious food and fast service. Reading reviews, I was expecting a long wait before and after ordering, but we somehow made it just before the rush.

Yelp
BBQ Sauce is watery and the place have a limited selection. First and last time coming here.

Yelp
LAWDDDD HAVE MERCY ON ME!!! This fella is STILL DOING HIS THANG!! Born and raised in Texas...I have tried BBQ spots from across the state...hands down Meshacks BBQ IS TOP 3. Not to say there is not better...I just have not had it...so until then - this is my go to Spot. Rib meat is falling off the BONE. My personal favorite are the Hot-Links. Hotlinks - Ribs - Brisket in that order. Here is a measurement - a few weeks ago I had 1050 BBQ in Richardson. Cost me $70 for 1/2 lb of brisket - (2) ribs - and a pork chop. Today @ Meshacks I ordered (2) lbs of ribs - (1) lb of Hot links and (1) lb of Brisket lean and a 20 oz coke = $73.00. The service is always pleasant - the ambiance is standing outside wondering how long until I here my name called!!! For the record...this BBQ is not covered in rubs and spices....Just good ol smoked BBQ. Which is hard to find these days. Do yourself a FAVOR AND stop by and grab a few lbs of your choice. And if you see this fella below - make sure you give him a hard time! Cause he will definitely give you one!! Keep it SMOKIN Travis!!

Yelp
Great hole in the wall place. The cue is stellar. Pecan smoked brisket mmmm. Take out only, walk up window service, small family operation. Get in line early before it's gone. small menu and limited sides. Bring cash

Yelp
As with any other outstanding BBQ place, be prepared to wait. It's worth it. Having been there before some years earlier, I was more than ready to make the trek back. We live in Carrollton, so going into old downtown Garland isn't exactly easy. To put it succinctly, I love this place! It is old school all the way. We ordered some chopped beef sandwiches and an order of ribs. Pro Tip: This place is to go only, unless you want to eat there on one of the two benches for waiting ... but then someone waiting might take it away from you. When we got home with the grub, the sandwiches were huge! Each sandwich had to be a half pound. The meat was chopped with their home made sauce mixed in. Perfection. I ate every bite. At $5 per sandwich this is the barbecue bargain of the Metroplex. You can also get sliced brisket sandwiches without the sauce but they are $9, as well as other sandwiches like ribs, turkey, sausage ... but why? The real star is the ribs. They serve rib tips which are like meat candy ... so good. Finally, the lady running the front is as sweet and nice as can be. You just need to eat for yourself.

Stephen R.

Yelp
Another sketchy review - THIS ... is what a BBQ joint should be. Nothing pretentious, no putting on of airs, just a simple spot serving up some solid Que. Stepping out of your car in the make-shift parking lot, you are greeted by subtle smoke and the sweet smell of what is to come. Fancy has no place at Meshack's. The hand-lettered menu is basic and straightforward, and the prices are reasonable. Customers mill about the front, waiting for their name to be called. Upon collecting your order - stashed away in a plain brown bag - you are given a "have a blessed day," as you head to your car with your precious cargo. This is a take-out only joint, so be prepared to eat in or off your car or head somewhere else to devour your BBQ gold. I've had the chopped brisket and rib sandwiches, and both were good, but I enjoyed the rib version better. Tucked between two pieces of white bread, the meat was tender, smokey and flavorful. The accompanying side of beans - spicy, please - was a meal unto itself, and very good. If you find yourself in the need of some fantastic BBQ, or you just want to have a blessed day, check Meshacks out - it's definitely worth the drive to Garland.

Yelp
Great Food, a dont miss destination. Early arrival suggested as certain popular food items run out . Iykyk.

Yelp
I've been living in Tx since 2018 and this still is the best bbq I had in the state . Smh....delicious!!

Eric K.

Yelp
Bad bbq, long wait, bad service. Shocked people come here. Much better option in Dallas/the area

Neil U.

Yelp
Very nice people with extremely slow service. After the wait, I was expecting something "off the charts". It was okay. I had the three meat plate with beef ribs, brisket, and sausage. The ribs were great...the rest was just average. I didn't care for the beans nor the potato salad. You do get a lot of food for the price.

Yelp
Growing up in Kansas City I am very particular and search for good bbq when visiting other cities. Came to the bbq shack after reading the great reviews. I ordered the three meat dinner with ribs, sliced brisket and chopped beef. The portions are large and i especially enjoyed the ribs. The sliced and chopped beef (a little fatty) were very good too! The family is super nice and take pride in their bbq. Highly recommended by this KC bbq lover.

Kennethia G.

Yelp
The owner is very rude and mean everytime I go he always say he only have links that's it ... I went to him three times and all the visit was the same....

Marina T.

Yelp
this food was amazing!! better than any BBQ place I have been! the price was so good!! support you local busines! cash only!!
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Yummmy. First time we had food from meshacks we took a nap at the dining room table.... Get there early or order a large tray ahead of time. They sell out fast. Great local place run by real locals. Hard to find on a 3 point corner on a one way street. A little parking but no seating. It is a shack like it says with some great smoking goin on !!!

A M.

Yelp
Arrive early or they could be sold out! So good. Fair price. I strongly recommend you buy pounds and invite some friends and family to enjoy with you.

Catherine S.

Yelp
Amazing bbq! Everything was delicious! Their ribs, brisket and pulled pork were wonderful! We love their bbq sauce as well! They are also so friendly and kind! So happy we found this place- we will definitely be back often!
google avatar

Julio R.

Yelp
Let's get right to it; I'm a BBQ fanatic so I'm a bit bias. I give this place a 4 because of the flavor and how soft the meet is. You have to be used to Texas bbq in order to really enjoy this place. I'm from Kansas so our bbq is different, I would've like for it to be more saucy but the ribs were good and tender. They have been there for years and take cards. You have to get there when they open though because they run out of food within a couple of hours. The ribs and brisket sandwich were my favorite.

Kenneth S.

Yelp
The ribs could not of been any better. I got a pound of the chopped beef , absolutely delicious we ate on it for days , oh the potatoe salad is my wife's favoriteand remember if you can't wait don't order

Morgan W.

Yelp
Had the amazing opportunity to eat Meshack Barbeque at work. They catered a delicious luncheon for the staff. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend this family owned/Black owned business.
google avatar

Geoff H.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. Used to work nearby and on thursdays, the team would head over and get the brisket, ribs, or sausage. All of it was great and fresh. It's cash only, and first come / first serve, so get there early if you want something like the ribs.
google avatar

Greg A.

Yelp
I don't get it. I mean the people are very nice but the BBQ is Ok. The ribs were tough the brisket was dry and the sausage was very tough and very ordinary. I had to wait 30 minutes for this OK BBQ. You can tell from my reviews I've been to every BBQ place around Texas.
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
Excellent barbecue. My only complaint is you have to get there early and eat a early lunch because they run out of food very fast lol.
google avatar

Alisha S.

Yelp
Had this place bookmarked for so long and today I actually got to try it! I've heard such good things about this place as well as read all the reviews. After passing by this shack, we decided to get food from here. I ordered a chop'd sandwich and my sister got the the links sandwich. Both were amazing and CHEAP! Our total was under $10! I definitely recommend getting the chop'd sandwich cause it's so worth the price. The flavor of the meat as well as the subtle taste of charcoal made this one of the best barbecue sandwiches I've ever had. The sauce was great too. One of the owners came out and sat next to me while we waited for our food. He was very friendly and kind. I can't believe I waited so long to try this place. Hole in the wall spot!
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
Great food at a great value. Family owned and operated and friendly. Love the real smoked meats, you can't go wrong.
google avatar

Connie E.

Yelp
Some of the best BBQ period! Their hours are inconsistent and unpredictable though and I wish they had a dining room.
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
I've had their BBQ at the HAAS Demo Days and they picked up trays of BBQ and sides from Meshack's. I went there once around 1PM, but they sold out already. You have to beat the crowd if you want some great BBQ here. Small parking lot and getting out of the lot is a bit dicey with the curve in the road and people going 60 MPH around the corner.
google avatar

Rod L.

Yelp
Shusssh, local secret. Don't tell anyone! Prices have crept up, but what restaurant haven't. Rembrr, don't tell anyone!
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
There are a lot of adjectives and descriptions that are used when talking about barbecue. Many could be used for this place. I'd like to submit a less used word, though: generosity. The nature of this kind of food necessitates low and slow cooking. The person who makes it gives of their time, arguably our most valuable commodity. And beyond giving of his time to cook, he still has enough to come out, talk to the regulars, hand out sandwiches and money to the homeless (also regulars), and hand off whole briskets for nearby folks that brought him meat they bought and are only having him smoke. I say all this not to romanticize things - this is still his livelihood and it's hard work. But you see the joy and satisfaction on his face. He knows that he and his food belong in the community. Oh, the food is damn good, too.
google avatar

Shelby B.

Yelp
The meat is dry, and cut way too thick. It's like trying to swallow a carpet. Not a great flavor, and the sauce is basically ketchup.
google avatar

Bonnie S.

Yelp
This place isn't open often but when they are there's always a line out front. I hear it's the best as far as barbecue patrons. Some of the best I've ever had in Texas. There must be an underground communication because like I said there is no set hours as far as I know. But people seem to know when they are open and line up LOL

Marcus S.

Yelp
Good luck making it there before all the food is gone. Better be in line at 10 AM.. They are pretty selective about what days they are open now. Dude is getting pretty old Brisket and ribs off the chain. And. Doesn't get any better inside of the Garland city limit. Better bring cash and don't forget the tip

Kashif B.

Yelp
Can't beat a $6 chopped brisket sandwich. And it's massive by the way. Their hot bbq sauce is my favorite and they always give me a big container when I ask

J D.

Yelp
After a few weeks of trying other BBQ joints deemed the best in North Texas by certain publications we HAD to come back HOME to Meshack's BBQ in Garland Tx. It's not pretensious, foods not laid out on a sheet tray or fancy charcuterie board which seems to be the schtick nowadays. It's just good oldshool Texas smoked bbq with slices of white bread, your choice of sides and bbq sauce. Fall off the bone ribs, tender beef brisket and don't forget to add "RollUp" as a starter. Meshack's is not new to DFW like soooooo many others, some of which made the "Best Of" list but we decided we would not visit them again. Coming back reminded us what good bqq and personable service is. The people you meet while waiting makes the line made the wait time go a little faster or you might find a new electrician or mechanic. It was good to be back to the basics and Meshack's again for our bbq fix !
google avatar

DeCoria M.

Yelp
Just to tell you how good this stuff is, I'm going to visit my beau in North Carolina this week and he asked me to bring him some Meshack's as part of his valentine's gift...so here I am ...and it's just another sign that Texas bbq is way better than North Carolina bbq lol
google avatar

Jershayla J.

Yelp
Meshack's BBQ is definitely a hidden gem! It's in the the best local bbq businesses in Garland! The ribs & smoked sausage are always juicy & flavorful. I would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
Great BBQ!! Don't let the building fool you. It's take out only, but some of the best BBQ anywhere!
google avatar

Helena S.

Yelp
Every weekend, we drive by this little building, and every time, there's a huge line. Today we finally got a chance to stop by, around 12 pm on a Wednesday, and there were only a few people waiting. We ordered a link (sausage) sandwich & the chop'd beef sandwich. Our total was less than than $8, which was SOOOO worth it from the amount of meat given in the sandwiches. Our wait was only about 5 minutes. The lady who took our order (I think she was the owner), was so friendly. It's in a small little lot off the side of 66 and 1st Street so parking is very limited. I've heard and seen how packed it can get on the weekends, so come early. Their sign says, they close when they run out of meat. I've attached pics of the sandwiches, which come with the sauce on top. The meat was amazing, so tender, juicy, and you can taste the hint of smoked flavor. It paired nicely with the sweet BBQ sauce. Next time I'd try their spicy sauce though. I definitely recommend checking this place out, because I can easily say, this is some of the best BBQ I've had!

Yelp
Meshack's Bar-Be-Que Shack is literally a shack or food stand that serves honest to goodness great barbecue. Be warned, there's no infrastructure for seating, but if you're ok with eating in your car or picking up a catered order, if you're in the area Meshack's should be #1 on your list. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - A run down parking lot, overgrown grass, a busy intersection, and a long line are some of the things you'll find at Meshack's. If it's your first time, look for their sign and then find some parking. If you're there early then you may find just a few people waiting. Get there at peak time and they will have probably run out. It reminds me of Austin, which is a good thing. Some people may not like having seats, but if you're just here for the smoke it won't matter. 1 Star. Service - It's a family run business, which means they take pride in their offerings. If you're there just to eat, you'll walk up to the shack, order with the lady, and proceed to wait to be called. Prince likes to sweet talk his way into some free samples, so be nice because these are good people. We've placed a large catered order with them and they are great. They took the time to get our order right, call us with updated timing (good smoking has a small window), and help us with the order to the car. Again, good people here. 1 Star. Food - Is it the best in Dallas? Everyone has their own opinion but I'll say they're the best in Garland. I'll highlight two of my favorite items. First, their chopped beef is my favorite in the area. The brisket is finely chopped and tossed in sauce, but it's a perfect balance. Not too much or too little. When you place a large scoop on soft white bread, add pickles & onions, you have the perfect chopped barbecue sandwich. My other item of choice is their beans. Perfectly tender, sweet, and you'll find bits of brisket added for flavor. I could honestly eat an entire bowl of beans and be highly satisfied. The ribs have great smoke flavor but I prefer ribs from other places (Slow Bone). And honestly the other sides are your basic sides. It's still some of the barbecue in the area. 1 1/2 Stars. Will I Return? - For catered orders - no doubt. I can't see myself making a trip to Meshack's just to eat on my own - sorry, I'm a messy eater & need a table, chairs, napkins, & help. But if I needed a large catered order, Meshack's can take my money. 1/2 Star. My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts): 1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm. 1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point. 2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it's really all about the food. 1 Star - Will I come back? - If I know for a fact I'll return, I'll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return. Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. I will sum them up to provide my final Yelp score.

Mitsu D.

Yelp
The place lives up to the name "shack." The BBQ is pricey $20 /lb. for brisket & ribs and $13 for sausage. That said, I don't mind paying more for great BBQ. The baked beans and potato salad was delicious. This was well worth the price and I will come back again. Highly recommend!

Loisey E.

Yelp
I always love this place! Don't go if you don't want to wait 30-45 min outside or in your car! They don't care that you are waiting! They run out of meat fast! Get there super early if you want brisket! The pulled pork is amazing and the ribs are my favorite! I always ask for extra bbq sauce. I don't care for any of the sides. Small little place.

Yelp
Another highly recommended place that just proves some people have zero idea what good would be even if it hit them in the face. This may have been amazing 20 yrs ago - but today, compared to the high end bbq movement sweeping Texas (Ive eaten at most of the Tx Monthly top 10-15 joints too), this isnt even dickies level que. Some people like the novelty of a take out only shack with no seating. Fine. Some people like The idea of drowning bbq in sauce ( they prob like well done steak Too). Whatever. Im actually ok With the chaos that is the parking lot here. Running out quickly isnt even that bad to me. It keeps the daily product fresh usually and not a case of chopping yesterday's leftovers into the 2 nd tier dishes like chopped sandwiches and baked potatoes. But when youre charging top dollar for mediocre beef, with none of the overhead other, much better places, have at the same price point - im out. We ordered sliced beef sandwiches, and knew the dining situation before arriving. However eating this sandwich in my truck, or even on the tailgate was impossible. It had an inch of sauce swimming in the foil. So much that BOTH bottom slices of bread were soaked through and just a wet mess. Even if i took this back to the office I would have had to eat it with a knife and fork because that sauce would be everywhere. It wasnt just a little too much. It was a ridiculous amount. But i know why. The sliced beef was DRY. Sure it had a good smoke ring and the bark had a decent flavor, but the pieces i pulled off and shook sauce off of were void of any moisture other than the actual sauce. The sauce wasnt even good. Very thin and watery. I couldnt put my finger on it but it had a sort of vinegary punch that wasnt pleasant at all. I am convinced it was thin and poured in excess to try and soak into, and mask the dry beef. Theres no other legit explanation for doing that. Serving $8 sandwiches on white bread is also a pet peave of mine. Thats what a hustler with a run down bbq trailer does in a strip club parking lot at 1:30 am. Not an established "legendary" bbq restaurant. At least a legit bun would have fended off some of the sauce for a little bit. To top it off, when we finished eating, i had to haul a gallon of bbq sauce in a paper bag off to the gas station trash and hope it didnt spill because there wasnt a trash can anywhere in sight. Not in the parking lot or out front. Which really made me question why there were so many flies around. Seriously- the flies when we ordered were BAD, but they were out in the lot too. Not worth a second trip, or a first one if you have taste buds or wearing nice clothes you dont want sauce on.

Yelp
First off, I'm sitting in parking lot waiting for them to open... I don't wait for places to open... it's that good, hands down, best chopped beef sandwich in a 3 hour radius it's location. How it can only be 4 star is BEYOND comprehension... 5 star all the way... walk up window... get there early, they sell out...

Frances B.

Yelp
No exaggeration. Best bbq in the state of Tx. Facts.

Yelp
Hands down, they have the best BBQ in the country!!!! And they have magazine awards, tv shout outs, long lines in the hot sun to prove it. I don't know how they can cook all that food in that tiny 'lil place, but if Jesus can work with 2 fish and 5 barley loaves to feed thousands, God has blessed the work of their hands. Bought some today matter fact.
