Over the years, we have stayed in hundreds of Marriott properties. This one was a love-hate relationship. Please read and be informed before you book this hotel as it may not be for everyone. For context we were on a vacation during the winter months(December) and the location of this hotel in Winters might be more offputting than its location in Summers, where the use of the adjacent garden spaces and access to port may enable boat rides, this was not so in winter months. The location as some of the reviews have mentioned is not really walkable to Ginza and we took a cab many times, however, it’s a clean location right next to the Tokyo Bay. What really goes for the hotel are some incredible high-rise views and an extremely polite staff. What goes against? Many amenities of the hotel are not informed at the check-in so either you discovered them on your own by end of your visit or don’t see them at all. As one reviewer has already mentioned the bath towels are really small and I think they need to standardize the size of towels. The kettle in the room is made of copper and while it is a fantastic design, it doesn’t have good functionality as it never seemed to automatically stop boiling the water, at least in our room. The kettle also seems to be pour over coffee rather than regular conventional tea/coffee and thus has a very thin spout. The piano in the room is a good design concept, but not all of us are music savvy so it seemed redundant. You do have to factor the fact that you have to take two elevators to reach your room as the lobby is on the 16th floor of a high-rise building and then you have to take a second elevator to reach your room so it does become a bit cumbersome if you’re staying long. There are not many eclectic shops nearby to walk around and browse, although there is certainly a family mart in close proximity. There was no turn down service, which is somewhat of a shocker in Tokyo where most hotels provide turn down service with night dress and chocolates. We had breakfast four days in a row at the Theatre (odd name for a restaurant), a lot of repetition of food items. The fresh orange juice access is somewhat hidden behind the bar and we only discovered it on the third day. Fresh orange juice always beats the canned juice anyways. There is not enough seating for breakfast time so you do spill over towards the lobby and although that is OK with views, the service dropped down with clearance of your used plates at a much lower frequency. The iPad in the room allows you to order room service however honestly, they should have told that on day one as we figured it out only on the fourth day. In the end, we think this hotel may not be for everyone. It does have many good points too. Therefore dependent upon what you are looking for , thus hotel may or may not work for you. Please choose wisely.
To the hotel folks - design must meet functionality. Many design aspects in the rooms and the hotel are excellent but poor functionality. Perhaps a focus group can stay and utilize these amenities to inform what may have to be changed. We also feel, the first desk you see after emerging from the elevators on the 16th floor is the desk of the concierge and you think that that is the check-in desk, that may have to be looked at because it’s an unnecessary divergent to first walk to that desk and then be redirected to the Checkin hidden on the side. Thanks.
