Best Restaurants to Try While Visiting Wilmington, North Carolina - Eater Carolinas

"Mess Hall has returned, this time in a new space just a few short blocks east of its original Cargo District location. The Port City’s most iconic burger joint still serves up some of the offerings that made it so well-known in the first place, like the signature Samburger (cheddar, bacon, onion straws, caramelized onions, and “Mess Sauce”) and the McWhat (a play on a certain burger chain’s famous menu item). The restaurant has also added breakfast, and this new space shares a yard with Ruff Draft, a dog-friendly bar, meaning you can let your furry friends run and play while you order from a takeout window located in the fenced-in dog park." - Matt Lardie

12 Hottest Restaurants in Wilmington, North Carolina

"Mess Hall is not new to Wilmington, per se, but its most recent location is. Just north of (but technically still in) the Cargo District, the new Mess Hall still serves up some of the same burgers that made it famous when it first opened in the space that now houses Beat Street Street Food. Opt for the classic Sam burger or the McWhat? (a play on that famous burger chain’s most popular burger), or try one of the specials. It’s also serving breakfast now, and the space is attached to the dog bar (yes, dog bar) Ruff Draft by a shared, fenced-in yard, meaning you can hang with your pups and order a burger from the to-go window at the same time." - Matt Lardie

First time at this cool little spot! I ordered the Samdawg - a funky little concoction that was an unexpected combination and a happy surprise! The flavor blend was excellent. My husband got a burger with Cheer wine chili - he loved it too. There are no fries, but each order is served with tater tots and they were perfectly crispy. I loved the atmosphere, prices and friendly staff also. We will be back!

My buddy suggested we take a ride over and catch lunch at the mess hall. It’s a neat little building with seating indoors and outdoors. We ordered at the counter and then sat outside where they brought our food to us. I had the Sam’s burger, which was fantastic. I got the tater tots with a side of the mess sauce, which was delicious on them. I had a fat ass moment and topped it all off with a orange dream sickle shake. My absolute favorite, Dunn to perfection. It’s my favorite burger in Wilmington so far. It’s a nice quiet little neighborhood, a nice spot to catch a bite and relax.

WOW I haven't had a burger and tots like this in a LONG time. Simply delicious 🤤 I got the breakfast burger. The bun was soft, the patty crispy and the sauce pulled this thing together in a supreme symphony of burgerphonic flavors. The tots were crispy, hot and delicious paired with their ketchup that sat table side. Will be back. Must go back. JUST GET THERE.

They have amazing tots and some fun combos. Order at the counter and then you’ll get a buzzer to get your food once it’s ready. The burgers tasted a little dry and not too much flavor. Also didn’t love the potato bun. Fun cocktails at the bar. Friends had the hot dogs and said those were really good.

Great spot tucked away in Wilmington. Food is outstanding. Service could use some improvement, seemed to be understaffed. One young lady out front trying to take orders while on the phone and make drinks. She still found the time to be friendly once she was done with the long line. Again, outstanding place to eat, great atmosphere. Will return.

Excellent Burger. Old-fashioned. Tots are very popular round here, these are some of the best. Hot dog was a miss for me. Not a good dog, no natural casing, no snap to it, and horribly under done (basically warmed up) no char. Maybe it's a roller dog 🤷. But not for me. A little less sauce would be my preference, but sauce is fun and interesting.

My husband ordered the Samburger and I ordered the Carolina burger with Scott's tots. Oh my goodness, it was so good! We will definitely be returning!
