KC’s three-story coffee-and-bread temple pairs meticulous roasting with a working bakery and a skyline-view rooftop. Frequently cited by Condé Nast Traveler and local travel media, it’s where visiting chefs and design nerds start their day in the Crossroads.

Google
Messenger Coffee is one of my favorite spots in the city! The avocado toast is always a win, and you truly can’t go wrong with any of their baked pastries—the almond croissant is a must-try. I also love the Honey Bear latte for something a little different. The rooftop seating with a view of the city makes it even better. Great coffee, great food, and a great vibe in an ideal location!

Twila Derstine

Google
The rooftop seating area is gorgeous. Absolutely loved the 3 levels. Their Bearclaw and Monkey Bread were delicious. The bakery right there makes the whole place smell amazing. The coffee was worth coming back for.

Ken Cruz

Google
Amazing artisanal coffee and baked items! Wonderful vibes throughout this multi-level venue packed with the beautiful and friendly residents of KC! There is so much pride and effort made with crafting these delicious beverages and food! Just WOW! Savor everything here!

Charles Vega

Google
Great coffee shop in downtown. Close walk from many hotels and the convention center so it was very easy to pop over and get a coffee. The baristas were friendly and made a delicious cortado! The baked goods also looked phenomenal, although I did not get to try them.

Bryon Albin

Google
Great service, great food, and priced right. The lady recommended the monkey bread and I also grabbed a coffee and turnover. The food had great flavor and the coffee was hot. I would go back.

annemarie fernandez

Google
Excellent experience — the coffee was superb, the food was beautifully presented and delicious. A pleasant place to relax or spend time with friends. Very spacious, clean, and nice.

Travis Multhaupt

Google
Best coffee in KC, best selection of breakfast croissants, muffins, and other pastries, including some fantastic gluten free options. A must visit for anyone in Kansas City.

Samantha

Google
Massive cafe with plenty of seating for work or socializing! They have some sandwiches & salads, as well as breads & pastries. The bear claw was absolutely perfect! Buttery, crispy, and the right amount of chocolate. My latte was good too. Took a little long to come out but it was a busy Sunday morning.

Yelp
Avocado tartine Delicious avocado toast. I used to dislike avocado, but now I'm slowly appreciating its deliciousness. The poached egg would be even better if it were a little runnier Mixed berry oatmeal It's filled with cream and berry jam. I personally find it very sweet and has a milky flavor Latte The coffee here is hand-roasted and tastes unlike anything I've had in LA. It's rich and not astringent. As a famous coffee shop in Kansas City, it's worth a try

Yelp
This place is super busy and trendy, and when I walked in, the line was nearly out the door. Fortunately, I wasn't in a rush so I waited patiently to order. The fun part is as the line progresses, you're paraded along the pastry case, which to a bread and sugar addict, is a nearly impossible feat to resist. BUT I did it. I resisted the Peach Muffin with Cinnamon Icing and the Toffee Chocolate Chunk Cookie, amongst other mouth-watering delectables. My goal was to order breakfast -- no coffee -- and I made it all the way to the cashier, kept my eye on the prize, and ordered that Focaccia and Lox. And then ... I faltered when I heard the Summer drink menu whispering sweet nothings to me, and I could NOT resist the Mango Brûlée Cold Brew; and it did NOT disappoint. The breakfast was insanely good. The bread was fresh. The lox was fresh. The dill was fresh. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though I would've been into the bread being toasted and a lil crispier. But the portion was generous, and I was completely satisfied. All in all, I get it. This place deserves the hype. It reminds me a bit of Tartine, which started in San Fran. Next time I'm in KC, I'll be back to try more.

Yelp
We went to messenger coffee on a sunday morning and it was busy! The variety of pastries and other items that they offer is amazing and the actual coffee shop is so big and has lots of places to enjoy your coffee. There are three floors to this coffee shop including a rooftop patio with a fireplace going for those chillier days! We got a iced matcha latte, cinnamon roll, french onion grilled cheese w/chips, and a vanilla latte. The vanilla latte, cinnamon roll, and french onion grilled cheese were really good but the iced matcha latte was mostly milk and not much matcha flavor.

Yelp
Hash bowl was TO DIE FOR. Would get it time and time again. Coffee was good too - got a honey bear latte iced. Service was quick considering how busy they were. Lots of seating and very airy feel. Rooftop would be perfect in fall and spring. Will be back!

Yelp
The atmosphere of this place is fabulous, especially on a sunday morning! It was super busy with every single seat taken, a long line to order, and many people waiting for their orders. But, with that being said, it was still worth the vibe. One cool thing about this place is there are 3 floors- the first one being the floor to order and grab your order, the second being a lounge area where the coffee beans are, and the 3rd being the outdoor deck area. On a nice warm day, the 3rd floor is the place to be! especially because there is a great view! So if you can find seating on the 1st floor just head on up the stairs! I got an iced mocha and it was really good, definitely not bitter. It was on the sweeter side which i prefer. I really have no complaints about this place!

Yelp
Very comfortable spot to work upstairs Cold brew was light but bold flavor. Counter service was friendly

Yelp
Wow this cafe was CROWDED on a Saturday morning but the line and coffee was quicker than expected. Super large space with multiple floors and seating. Lots of plants for a nice ambiance. Ordered a matcha latte, vanilla latte, raspberry orange bread pudding, and almond croissant. Drinks and bread pudding exceeded my expectations! They know what they're doing. The croissant was also great, flaky, lots of layers, I only wish they had slightly more almond filling. Highly recommend for anyone visiting KC.

Yelp
Best cup in town and we hit MANY. Went here after the last barista at a different shop recommended this place
google avatar

Yelp
After eating a few mornings of hotel breakfast I decided to brave the cold and try this place out. It was very easy to walk to and had a delicious almond milk latte and truly one of the best croissants I've ever had (not pictured). While at messenger I also ordered the breakfast burrito which was incredibly filling and probably two meals worth of food. The staff was incredibly kind and were hustling to get drinks and food out quickly to all of its customers. While I didn't stay inside I will say it was a beautiful location that was very bright which is my preference for a coffee shop first thing in the morning vs. the typical dark and dreary vibe that some have.

Yelp
We had ourselves a little day walking around and exploring Kansas City. Messenger came recommended by everyone and the views were just as good as the coffee! We got a dirty chai and a vanilla latte. Wished I had grabbed one of their pastries but that'll have to be on my to do next time!
google avatar

Yelp
The space was beautiful and there were lots of pastry options. They're listed as a vegan friendly business but I didn't see that to be the case. They charge an egregious $1.25 extra for non dairy milk in any drink and none of their baked goods were labeled as vegan. The cashier seemed new and the line was long, so I didn't feel like holding things up and asking if anything was vegan. My medium latte ended up being $9 As a note, some things were labeled as "gluten friendly". I'm not sure what that meant. Perhaps "gluten free friendly"? They might want to change their phrasing so people know what they mean.

Yelp
Oh what a neat place! I have driven by this so many times and apparently over looked it. I'm so upset I haven't tried it yet until recently since being in KC for 6 years! Coffee and breakfast sandwich were delicious. Fantastic space to meet up with friends or get some work done.
google avatar

Cooper C.

Yelp
This coffee shop is located in a neat place. I love how it's in the bottom of a building. They truly do have great coffee here. Their pastries looked so amazing and I was sad that I didn't have time to get one and try one. Also, while we were in there, my mom knocked over my coffee drink and made a little bit of a mess. The workers there were quick and happy to come help clean the mess up. I highly recommend trying this coffee place.
google avatar

Yelp
This is quite easily the largest coffee shop I've seen. They make all their pastries in-house with view of the kitchen space. There's also an upstairs area like a library. The service moves fast for a busy establishment. I ordered... Pepperoni pizza bagel ($5): oh my yum. This could be a full meal of its own with how satiating and savory it is. The thing is huuuge! Matcha ($5): this is a great quality drink, with hardly any noticeable sweetener, just how I like it! I came from out of town, so I won't be back in the near future, but I recommend Messenger Coffee for your own out-of-towners!
google avatar

Sydney C.

Yelp
Great coffee, a great food menu and great pastry options. The interior is beautiful with 3 stories of seating options and a rooftop outdoor seating area. For how fast-paced and busy it gets here, they have their system down with getting food and drinks out.
google avatar

Grace Y.

Yelp
Saturdays around noon at Messenger are crazy busy! Try to time your visit outside these hours, because the line to order is very long and there aren't a ton of seating options available. The Buttered Rum Latte tasted like brown sugar deliciousness and was perfect to pair with a good book. The Lavender Lemon Cookie was too intriguing to pass on -- very sweet and lemony with a hint of lavender at first.
google avatar

Alison L.

Yelp
I love Messenger! They have great coffee, amazing ciabatta bread, and delicious treats. The atmosphere and vibe are super fun and the staff is all very helpful and friendly. One of my top favorite coffee shops in KC!
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Stopped by Messenger Coffee on a Sunday afternoon. The building and atmosphere was very modern and open with a variety of seating options. There are three levels including a rooftop area. The coffee was great. I had a vanilla iced latte which was very flavorful and not overly sweet. They had several pastry and baked goodies available as well. The staff were friendly and had our drinks prepared quickly.
google avatar

Genna G.

Yelp
I needed a coffee shop in this city that would meet my criteria of having great coffee drinks, great avocado toast and great seating to get several hours of work done. This three story coffee shop easily met my criteria, exceeded my expectations and was an absolute dream. Beautiful roof top seating area as well. My almond milk latte and avocado " tartine" were delicious. Highly recommend

Yelp
Today, my husband and I stopped in to try out this coffee shop. It is a very large coffee shop that is bright and airy in the front section. It does have a lot of seating, but it was packed, so we only found some high backed barstool chairs at a counter. The coffee was good, my husband's cookie that he got was stale. They had a nice music playlist, but I feel like it was rather hectic and crowded. You also have to ask for a code to use the restroom. The service was just average as well.
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
This place is packed for a reason. It's a great place to grab a coffee and the food is really good. Love coming here when I make a trip up to KC!
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
Best Coffee experience I've had in a while, maybe ever. The pour overs and drip are fantastic. I'm into good light roast coffee and they have plenty of options. People were great and the vibe is stellar. 3 stories and plenty of seating. The burrito and breakfast sandwich are great food options as well. 10/10 recommend

Yelp
Messenger is a staple cafe in Kansas City that is a unique spot right in downtown KC. The space has three different levels equipped with a full breakfast menu, bakery items from ibis, and a coffee menu. They also have a lot of functions and competitions going on. When I went on a Saturday morning they were doing latte competitions. They have a seasonal menu and I got their egg nog latte. Which was really delicious but it is sweet. I also got their breakfast biscuit topped with a Brie spread, pears, sausage, egg, and arugula. A great combination of ingredients of sweetness and the creaminess of the brie sauce. This is a great place to spend during the cold Kansas City mornings to warm yourself up with a hot drink.
google avatar

Ramon T.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. Got a burrito that was fairly priced and good. Also a Hash bowl that was pretty good but not fair price. Drinks were alright got a mocha iced and chai tea iced, both were strong in their flavor and okay. Service was decent not really clear and was new to the place and didn't really feel like a nice coffee shop atmosphere more like a library coffee shop. Pretty good food but coffee as much. Prices were also expensive. Around $41 for two people.
google avatar

Yelp
On a recent trip to KC, I went here with the Family for breakfast. we got coffee, pastries and sandwiches. The food was good and you can see in the photos that they bake a lot of their goods onsite. The space is cavernous, too. There was plenty of space for us to set up camp while we ate and made a mess. It is also on a corner, so there was tons of light streaming in, too. This is probably a great place to work during the week.
google avatar

Conchi S.

Yelp
Yelp, and it definitely had a unique vibe -- like a cozy train depot. The ambiance was lovely, and there was no wait, which was a nice surprise. Service was fine, though nothing exceptional. No specialty drinks stood out, but the pastry case looked tempting. Unfortunately, my almond croissant was overly crispy and wasn't warmed up -- something I expected but wasn't offered. I'd go back, mainly to relax and enjoy a basic espresso in a charming setting.

Yelp
This morning, I ordered decaf Americano because they do not offer a pour over or drip decaf coffee. Also a banana chocolate chip muffin toffee, chocolate chip cookie and a drip regular coffee. Decaf Americano is full with a bit of a bitter finish. This is definitely a dark roast coffee. The drip coffee was full body without the bitterness of the decaf coffee. The banana chocolate chip muffin was extremely moist and full of chocolate chips. It was excellent. Cookie is soft in the center with a nice crisp around the outside very sweet. The location is very nice and it need to be able to see the bakery while eating. My overall review is if I was going to put cream and sugar in my coffee, I would definitely come here every day for the pastries and coffee. I do like my coffee black and this doesn't appeal to me as much only because of how bold and bitter the decaf coffee was.

Yelp
What a vibe! My boyfriend and I checked out this coffee shop when visiting KC for a day because we loved the aesthetic. This shop was really unique as it had 3 different floors with a different atmosphere and decent amount of seating on each one. The ground floor was very modern and you were also able to see/smell the fresh bakery items they had available alongside the coffee. The second floor was very chill and had a lot of people working off their laptops as it was a decently sized area. For their 3rd floor they had outdoor rooftop seating! How cool for a coffee shop! You'll have to walk the flights of stairs to get up or they do have an elevator, but it didn't seem to be working when we were there. My boyfriend ordered an iced vanilla latte and felt it was pretty tasty-about an 8/10 and on par with the vibe of the shop. Overall, was a pretty cool place and would recommend stopping in!
google avatar

Lesley F.

Yelp
Love the ambiance and the coffee! Food is good too. They bake their pastries on site and they're delicious! The roof was closed off, darn it.. will look forward to visiting it next time. Lots of seating and community seating . We had the avocado tartine and it was very good with an egg and some roasted peppers.

Yelp
When you order a Butternut squash latte and you actually taste ( and feel texture) of butternut squash as you finish your latte - you know you have the real deal versus a syrup based drink. I.e- fabulous latte. Ibis bakery that also is housed there has never let me down with a calorie rich decadent pastry- ever. Plus you get to sit and watch bread baking or a fresh batch of cookies come out of the oven. 3 levels of seating including rooftop views. The only challenge you will have is parking and sometimes long lines... but the lines move quickly and you do eventually find parking.

Bryon A.

Yelp
Great service and food. Good flavor on the monkey bread and the coffee was hot. The turn over was flaky and flavorful.
google avatar

Brett W.

Yelp
Incredible atmosphere with the fresh baked goods made right inside and visible. Definitely more than a coffee shop. Coffee was good. Busy but line moved pretty quick thanks to efficient service. Would go here anytime and recommend to anyone.
google avatar

Sergio S.

Yelp
A stable coffee shop in the Kansas City area. Great coffee with an amazing seasonal menu. There are multiple floors with roof top access. A bakery constantly making a new treat which makes the sitting area smell amazing. Would come every day if I could. Even with large volumes of people coming through, the service was quick Vegan friend
google avatar

Parker B.

Yelp
Great spot to get some work done. I had to park on the street at a meter. The decor is modern. The whole place is open and airy. You walk up to the counter to order. The employees were friendly. There are three stories with a rooftop on the third level. I got a cold brew with oat milk. The 12oz coffee was smaller than I expected but really good. Their pastries looked delicious. I will have to try one next time I am in town.

Yelp
Great!! I love this place. I think for me it's the location and atmosphere! This place always has a way of lifting my spirits. It makes me happy to be in the most vibrant neighborhood in the city and to be in such an awesome space! People from all over the city are gathering here! I had an almond milk latte. Fantastic!!
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Three stories of seating with tables everywhere, great food and a fun seasonal menu - Messenger Coffee is a great start to the day! For as busy as it was on a Sunday morning we got our food and drinks pleasantly timely!
google avatar

Yelp
I've often wanted to check out Messenger Coffee in the Crossroads, but was concerned about parking and it being on Grand - Busy street. I was having a, "Let's Seize the Day", moment and decided to give it a shot. Parking was as taxing as I guessed, but I only had to walk half a block to get inside. The first floor is austere and clean, but not very welcoming in my opinion. I'm much more of a soft fabric with muted lighting kind of girl. Still, it has an old charm that I can see a lot of people appreciating. I grabbed a treat and tea then headed upstairs to find seating. The stairs are daunting, but they have an elevator to make things easier. The second floor was packed, but the rooftop with its view of the city and firepit was empty - Score! There was a bit of wind, but nothing that the huge firepit couldn't handle. I happily spent my Seize the Day morning sipping hot tea, eating a tasty treat, and enjoying the view on the Messenger Coffee on Grand's rooftop.

Yelp
Messenger Coffee is a hopping place and I can see why. It has several floors worth of seating plus a rooftop area, making it ideal for studying, working, or hanging out with friends. Given how large it is, I was able to study here for about 4 hours and didn't feel like I was taking a seat away from anyone who needs it. Service here is friendly and quick. Plus, there's plenty of people around in case you want to ask questions or need help. Drinks and food were ok to me, but my friends all loved theirs so maybe I ordered the wrong thing. My banana bread was a bit gritty. However, my friend got a croissant here and couldn't stop raving about how flaky and perfect it was.
google avatar

Keemy U.

Yelp
This place is so cute. There are a lot of seats upstairs and downstairs. The avocado toast was good and so was the sweet almond croissant. The almond crossaint was dry on the outside but what redeemed it was the buttery cinnamon sugar paste they spread on the inside layers. The service was quick and efficient.
google avatar

Chi H.

Yelp
I remembered when this place just opened up, I've been to Iris Bakery on 87th Street in Kansas was excited that we will have a place near downtown which is closer to me. This place has 3 floors and they got plenty of seating during the weekdays, weekend can be a bit busy. Always a good time here with their food and drinks. Most recent visit, we went on a Saturday morning and it was quite busy, we stood in line for about 15 minutes. We saw they have merch, lots of pastries even their infamous cheese slippers, and plenty of coffee. We got their burrito and sandwich, both were pletniful, honestly we could have just share the burrito. It was delish. The elevator was broken at the time and parking is streetside only. Would come back again.
google avatar

Phil B.

Yelp
Preface: we come here about once a month, but would come more often if prices were more closely aligned with KC rather than LA, which it seems like these days. Nevertheles, it's a nice treat for us and guests we have visiting town as it is a premium experience usually. Today however, there was a guy with a blue tattoo sleeve, who come to serve at the pastry counter and as he was getting a bag for someone's order, he put two fingers in his nose to adjust his nose ring before opening the bags and putting in pastries people ordered. He didn't even wash his hands before going back to work. A turn off especially for a place that has premium pricing. We love the quality of food and drinks here, but it's the most expensive in town, so we limit ourselves, are ready with the visits, but this might limit us even more if that reflects their hygiene.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
Super pretty location with amazing display of baked goods (I don't eat those but I can still admire them). Staff was very friendly and helpful. I got a delicious cafe au lait. They have a pitcher of cream on the counter (many coffee shops don't ) - I appreciate this, so I can add extra, which I always want.
google avatar

Nate F.

Yelp
Great coffee. Great baked good. And an amazing sit down area good for studying. I love coming here to study or just hangout with a friend. I definitely recommend the roof top for a great view.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Excellent macchiato and croissants. The interior is spacious and with a nice vibe. I went towards the end of the day and the place was still busy.

Yelp
Well...five years later, we are officially OUT of love. First of all, they don't respond to their e-mails (long story involving some old swag one of us thought we lost). Second of all, it's clear that what made this place so special is now lost. We came here last weekend, so SO excited to return back for what we were sure would be the same stellar experience that we had last time. We came around lunch and almost the entire pastry case was empty, and it looked like there were slim pickings to begin with, so we ordered a few and found a spot to sit upstairs. The vibe and space is virtually unchanged since 2019 and the coffee is still wonderful. But the baked goods? Meh! The plain croissant was almost certainly a purchased FTO--you could tell just by looking at it. The toffee chocolate chip cookie was fine, but nothing imaginative or memorable. Same with the pumpkin bread. We do have to say that we loved the cheddar jalapeño loaf, which was so flavorful and crispy and chewy in the right ways (a poignant reminder of what this bakery used to be like!). Even though the experience we had, overall, was good enough, we were so sad upon leaving thinking back to what once was. Apparently they've grown and expanded...and, well, that's what happens. The original product is never as good. 3.5 stars, rounding up for nostalgia {Sad face.}
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Much more than a coffee shop, a great place to gather! Great spot for coffee but this is also a BAKERY where they break delicious bread and various pastries. Inside an old building they use all three floors to provide you (or a group) plenty of space to partake and enjoy one's company. Service of the coffee is a little slow, your food will be ready first, so just don't come in a hurry!
google avatar

Sherry T.

Yelp
matcha is terrible. Too much milk and you can feel the powder when you sip. Whoever gave 5 stars of the matcha clearly hasn't had GOOD matcha smh
google avatar

Jolene M.

Yelp
First thing that came to mind when I stepped inside @messengercoffee at 16th & Grand. Immediate aroma of coffee and fresh baked goods will jump start your day. Keeping with the season I tried the Sweet Potato Latte. It was like Autumn in a cup. So many yummy flavors! But the highlight of my visit was the Avocado Tartine. Hands down the best version of avocado toast I have ever had. The toast was crisp not soggy. The egg was runny not over cooked. And adding the flavor of sweet peppers and chili crunch. It was de-lici-ous! Messenger Coffee Co has four locations - one being at the new Kansas City airport. The 16th & Grand location is in the heart of downtown KCMO. Multi-level with plenty of space for networking. Great natural light with great views. They even have a rooftop, but it's currently closed for renovations.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
All-around great coffee shop, with three levels, tons of natural light, and tasteful decor. The first floor has a nice open layout, with table and high-top seating as well as a full view of the fresh pastry-making. The second floor is a little quieter than the first, and offers a lot more seating options. Didn't make it to the roof, but eager to check that out during my next visit! The line seemed long when I first entered, but service is fast and I secured my latte pretty soon thereafter. Ordered an iced oat milk latte with lavender and vanilla - pretty strong on the lavender flavor, which I was a fan of. My friend and I were so relaxed and focused in this space that we ended up spending three hours here. So, definitely recommend if you're looking for a change of scenery in order to get some work done! Decided to order lunch while we were there, and ended up having one of the best sandwiches I honestly have ever had - the crossroads club on hearth bread, and a heaping side order of potato chips! Admittedly, a little pricey but so good I'll likely reorder.
