Best Restaurants in Kendall Square, Cambridge | Eater Boston

"Mestizo offers a modern take on Oaxacan cuisine with tacos, empanadas, carne asada, and enchiladas in a contemporary space with floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to the street on breezy summer days. To really shake up your night, order a margarita flight to sample with friends (or to drink yourself)." - Erika Adams

Boston Restaurant and Bar Openings, May 2024 | Eater Boston

"In Kendall Square I found Mestizo, a Mexican restaurant focused on Oaxacan food offering aguachile, ceviche, chorizo-stuffed tetelas, roasted chicken blanketed in an excellent Oaxacan mole negro, and an extensive margarita and mezcal cocktail list." - Erika Adams

If you like snacks best go to the store and buy some, it'll be cheaper and probably better tasting. The portions regarding of a "main" dish or appetizer are just way too small and way to over priced. If you want to fall into a pretentious trap that tries to run with the cover of being some exquisite cuisine then this is your place. That is if you're a fool. I asked for a beer and asked if it was cold, when brought over it wasn't. The service was slow and poor. The drink the misses had was made with old rotten produce and the lime was dry, whoever it's running that bar needs firing. The glasses still dirty with the lip marks of the last perons and Lord know it might had been persons. The music was in Spanish which we speak and was the most disgusting, disrespectful trash that you can hear. Clearly they are counting with their clients to be the type that sees this place and listens to the music and say "how exotic!", yeah, no. The taste was bland and the over use of the sauce seemed like a failed attempt to try and mask or give it taste. Neither. The plates where broken and cheap looking. Trust me, don't go unless you're a pretentious masochist. Will not return and can't tell you DO NOT GO enough. Skip all the way.

The worst restaurant experience I’ve had in Cambridge. First visited shortly after they opened last year and walked away unimpressed. A mediocre, overpriced meal that felt like it was designed for uninspired business lunches rather than actual dining. The steak was dry, the cheese enmoladas were tough, and the portions were small. Still, I decided to give them another shot. Unfortunately, it was way worse. We came back on a nice day for a casual dinner on the patio. The host was friendly, and we were seated right away. Then, nothing. For over 30 minutes, no one came by to take our order. Several servers stood chatting at the bar, occasionally making eye contact, but we were repeatedly ignored. A few walked past our table without so much as a greeting. I even placed the menu at the edge of the table as a clear signal, but still, no response. To make matters worse, a party that was seated 15 minutes after us had their order taken first, while we were still waiting for someone to even acknowledge us. I’ve eaten at hundreds of restaurants in Cambridge, and while service can vary, I’ve never experienced a place that seemed so actively indifferent. Can’t imagine this place lasting long.

We were a group of five and had such a great experience. We ordered a parrillada, a birria ramen, and some sopes as appetizers — everything was delicious and full of flavor. Our server, Paula, was wonderful! She recommended some drinks that turned out to be absolutely perfect and so tasty. She’s new to Boston, and we wish her the very best — she’s already doing an incredible job. Highly recommend this place, and definitely ask for Paula when you visit.

Stopped by on a Sunday for Labor Day weekend with some friends for lunch. I'd definitely would revisit. Portions are perfect got the cuban sandwich (could've used a couple more slices of meat). They brought out some guacamole and it tasted fresh.

July 4, 2025- The modern and vibrant Mestizo Restaurant was full of life tonight. The staff was pleasant, friendly, and downright awesome. Food was great, drinks fantastic and the DJ was magnificently exciting.

We grabbed lunch at Mestizo today and we had good food…tacos and burritos. Server was very nice and attentive. The atmosphere was very nice and clean.

Google
went to Mestizo in Boston and had a wonderful experience. The food was delicious, full of flavor, and beautifully presented — but the best part was the service. Paula was our server, and she was absolutely amazing! She was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed the whole time. You can tell she truly enjoys her job and cares about her customers. I’ll definitely be coming back and hope to be served by her again. Highly recommended! Dsp

Drinks were delicious. Atmosphere had a great vibe. I ordered the shrimp tacos and the shrimp tasted like they were reheated. My friend ordered the flank steak which was ok but our meals were out within 5-10 min and seemed reheated. Overall nice spot for drinks.

Yelp
"" Great for food , and drinks " This is a great spot . Food tasted fresh and delicious. It tasted like made with fresh ingredients and good ingredients. The service was good . The vibe is welcoming. Pricing is on the moderate side but well worth it . I definitely recommend this place .

Yelp
Fun place, service good but food only so-so. Also saw a bartender drop a box of straws all over the floor and was surprised to see them gathered up into neat piles on the bar. As we were leaving they were being put into large pint sized plastic cups on the bartop. We questioned this and our waitress said they would be thrown out. Riiiiggghhhttt.

Yelp
This is a spacious and new Mexican restaurant in Kendall square. It was pretty empty when we arrived at 6:30pm on a Friday, and the servers were all standing together with not much to do. The food was okay, but overpriced. At $15 for guacamole, we had hoped for some more unique housemade flavors, but it was basically the same as store-bought versions. Would skip. The jumbo chicken wings were crispy and very sweet, which I enjoyed, but they never brought out the dipping sauce that it was supposed to come with it. The shrimp tacos were the highlight for us flavor-wise, as it was a good mix of textures (soft, tender shrimp with crispy tortilla and a creamy drizzle of sauce), but the portion was quite small. Overall, the food was okay but pricey, the inside was clean and nicely decorated but empty, and the service was subpar (servers unfriendly and constantly trying to take our plates away without asking us if we were done). It was nice to try out a new place, but I probably wouldn't come back again.

Yelp
I was here for work and the student that I was visiting, and I asked what sort of food I should look for us to have for dinner and she asked for Mexican and I picked our mestizo for us to have dinner. We used open table for our reservation, I thought the food was great, we had queso fundito to start and then got different tacos, I ended up with the squid tacos, that were unique and enjoyable, I loved the flavor combination! My dinner companions enjoyed their tacos as well, I also thought my margarita was delicious! Loved the experience, hope I'm able to come back one day!

Yelp
Mestizo: A New Mexican Delight in Kendall Square Located in Kendall Square at 10 Broad Canal Way, Cambridge, MA, Mestizo is the latest addition to the ever-evolving culinary scene in the area. "Mestizo" translates to a person of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry in the former Spanish Empire, and this fusion is reflected in their vibrant and flavorful menu. Cocktails : First things first, their cocktails are fantastic! Priced at a reasonable $12, they are a steal compared to the $20 options you might find in Boston. Appetizers : Esquites: Grilled baby corn with an ancho marinade, crema fresca, and chipotle/Morita aioli. A fun twist on elote corn, beautifully presented and deliciously balanced with the cream. A solid 9/10. Empanadas: Filled with sweet plantain, guava, and Oaxaca cheese, served with charred pineapple sauce. These sweet empanadas were a delightful surprise. I'd order 10 more if I could! 9/10. Queso Fundido: Melted Oaxaca cheese with jalapeño, rajas poblanas, and guacamole. The cheese was divine but congealed quickly. Still tasty though! 7/10. Wings: Six dry-rubbed jumbo chicken wings with a garlic cilantro sauce. Juicy and perfectly cooked. 8/10. Tamal Ahogado: Chicken tamal with homemade mole negro, Oaxaca cheese, and crema fresca. The tamal was soft, and the sauce had decent flavor. 7/10. Main Dishes : Ceviche Marinero (Daily Catch): White fish with cilantro, onions, tomato, avocado, leche de tigre, passion fruit, and sweet potato mousse. Absolutely phenomenal! The passion fruit and avocado made this dish a standout. 10/10. Aguachile De Pez: Yellowtail Hamachi with a tequila blood orange marinade, cucumber, red onion, serrano peppers, and cara cara orange. Beautiful and delicious. 9/10. Enchilada Trio: Choose from chicken, cheese, or vegetarian filling, and sauces like mole negro, ranchera, or tomatillo. A visual and tasty delight. 8/10. Desserts : Tres Leches - Passion Fruit: You can't go wrong with tres leches, and the passion fruit twist makes it unique and delightful. 9/10. Sangria Brownie: Rich and flavorful with an orange and cherry sauce. It definitely needed ice cream but was worth every bite. 9/10. Mestizo is a place where you can easily share a variety of plates and leave very satisfied. I know I did! Overall Ratings: Food: 8/10 Affordability: 7/10 Food is expensive but the drink prices make up for it! Ambiance: 6/10 (Seating indoor/outdoor but not overly fancy) If you're in Kendall Square and craving some innovative Mexican cuisine, Mestizo is definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
This is a good, more upscale Mexican restaurant near MIT. We got guacamole (fresh, tasty), mojito, margarita and a spicy, cucumber gin drink. All were great. My partner got the mole enchiladas and I had the fish. Both were really good.

Yelp
This place continues to disappoint. I went during their opening week and was highly disappointed with the accuracy and quality of their food but gave them a second (and third) chance hoping they ironed out opening week kinks. They did not and the food is extremely bland, prices are high, and accuracy continues to disappoint.

Yelp
Mestizo opened up recently near Kendall Square. This modern Mexican fusion restaurant and bar serves up a variety of tacos, enchiladas, sopes, hot & cold small plates, main entrees and a few desserts (churros & cake). The place has a modern feel in a L-shaped space with rows of table seating, seating up at the bar with TVs, big windows for natural light and murals on the walls. The bar offers 6 beers on tap, wine, margaritas, tequilas, and sangria. The prices here are on the higher spectrum. I stopped by Mestizo on a late afternoon and sat myself at the bar. The bartender brought over a glass of cold water as I went over the menu. I decided on the Tostadas De Atun ($18 plus tax), which has Asian fusion marinated tuna loin pieces, pickled red onion, avocado, garlic cilantro sauce, on top of a crisp corn tostadita. This cold appetizer had a citrusy flavor. Next, the Yuca Fries ($7 plus tax) were 5 thick crisp firm yuca fries with a creamy dressing for dipping. I also got 2 tacos which were the Carnitas ($7 plus tax) and Camarones ($7 plus tax). Though small tacos, both were nicely presented and both I enjoyed served on top of soft corn tortillas. The check was presented after I had enough and it came out to $41.73 with tax and before tip. Overall, the Mexican fusion food I had was pretty good, but be prepared to spend more than normal for Mexican fusion due to this prime location and modern setting.

Yelp
Nearly empty for Sunday lunch when we visited so very easy to get a table. Service was good and food was served quickly except for specific dishes like eggs Benedict. Food was a hit or miss. We started with queso dip which came with a small dish of guac as well and both those were good. For mains, I ordered the breakfast quesadilla and my husband had the Birria ramen. We enjoyed the Birria ramen and were not as impressed by the quesadilla. I couldn't taste the eggs in it and the overall flavor was a bit bland. Drinks were delicious especially the coconut margarita type drink!

Yelp
Nestled behind the One65 main apartment building, Mestizo is a delightful gem offering a fusion of Mexican and Oaxacan cuisine. My friends and I visited on a sunny afternoon for lunch, and the ambiance balanced the carefully curated decor of an indoor restaurant with the breezy fresh air of a patio with the open floor-to-ceiling windows. The staff were welcoming and attentive throughout our meal. We indulged in the enchiladas with mole sauce, though they were slightly dry underneath (4/5). However, the birria ramen stole the show with its flavorful broth and tender meat (5/5). While I wasn't blown away by the dishes, they certainly held their own against other Mexican eateries in the area. Mestizo's inviting atmosphere makes it a top choice for a casual dining experience with friends.

Yelp
Left hungry! Paid $30 for three enchiladas imagining they'd be more than a few bites each. Really disappointing, I was hungry for the rest of the evening.

Yelp
The restaurant is very spacious and has very creative wall designs. The staff was very friendly and would stop by ever so often check up on us to make sure we are comfortable and enjoying our meal. As for the food, the first thing I want to mention is the Tres Leches dessert. The cake was moist but not heavy, and it was not overly sweet. The sweetness and the tartness off the passion fruit were well balanced. As for my favorite dish, it would be the birria ramen. It was such a creative idea for this fusion of Asian and Mexican cuisine. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and the braised beef was so flavorful. The birria soup base was a bit salty for me, but eating all the ingredients together made it a very delicious dish. I would also have preferred if the yolk was a bit more runny. The tacos were good, I especially enjoyed the Camarones Taco, but the portion is a bit on the smaller side. I would prefer bigger tacos and skip on the Spanish rice. The ceviche was flavorful, the fish was very fresh, it was very light and refeshing.

Yelp
Terrible host, had a reservation and instead of honoring my reservation. Rude. Abrupt. Terrible.

Yelp
I had great hopes for a Mexican restaurant in Cambridge. But this turned out to be a bit of disappointment. It is better as a bar and probably ok for people not looking for vegetarian food. But vegetarian food selection is surprisingly little. The service is fine and ambiance is great. But given the food for us wasn't great and prices are a bit on the higher side (yes, it is Cambridge) but portions are so small. So I wish they improve the vegetarian options.

Yelp
The servers here are so friendly! I have been twice and had two separate servers and both were just as friendly as each other. This spot is in a great location to sit comfortably outside. The inside also looks really nice, but I have not sat inside yet. Both times I've had the vegetarian tacos, which are great. The portions are smaller than typical, but I don't think that's a bad thing. The mocktails are very reasonably priced at $5 and so delicious! I tried the coconut one. Finally, they have the best chips and guacamole!

R S.

Yelp
The vibe is warm and welcoming. There are colorful textiles and other art. They have plans for patio seating but meanwhile large open windows to enjoy the spring weather (finally) Food? Yes, of course. I thrilled at the simple, yet hard to find in local restaurants, cheese enchiladas. They are served with rice and black beans seasoned with chiles and a bit of cinnamon. So good. I got take out and was acknowledged promptly by a host. The person who brought my food made sure, unprompted, that how they packaged was alright (in fact it was perfect).

Alex K.

Yelp
This is somewhere I would actively recommend people not to go to. I was one of a few people who went together, and we all got different things. Their food looked nice but was all underseasoned and dry. Their portions are small, and the place is overpriced for what you are getting. I have never seen smaller tacos. This place also seems to have made a conscious decision to skimp on even the smallest things. You have to pay for chips and salsa and then they give you about a shot glass worth of salsa, how much money is that realisticly saving them. The only good thing I have to say is that it has comfortable seating and the windows open in summer, but they should have spent less money on decorating and more on ingredients.

Joseph M.

Yelp
They reseated us for a better view of the television, which was nice. However, the food seemed very overpriced for what we received.
