8 Incredible Trips Across Canada Run by Indigenous Tour Operators

"Built on the original North Saskatchewan River lots of 1880s-era Métis settlers, Métis Crossing in Alberta has over the years grown from a small, summertime attraction into a year-round destination. Today, guests can stay in a 40-room lodge or one of eight luxury Sky Watching Domes, which are perfect for viewing the northern lights. Another recent upgrade is the cultural center’s solar power generation station, which aims to meet not only the energy demands of Métis Crossing but the entire Métis Nation of Alberta." - Diane Selkirk

How to Visit Métis Crossing in Alberta, Canada

"I traveled from Vancouver to spend a couple of days at Métis Crossing, a 688-acre Indigenous-owned cultural centre in Smoky Lake, Alberta, on the North Saskatchewan River. The property includes a 40-room lodge designed by Métis architect Tiffany Shaw-Collinge, a 320-acre wildlife park (Visions, Hopes and Dreams) a five-minute drive from the lodge, and new glamping-style Sky Watching Domes that debuted this summer — six domes with king beds and two family suites, all with high ceiling viewing windows for stargazing and a chance to see the aurora borealis. I watched li bufloo (bison) graze while Len Hrehorets put on country music to calm them, and learned from CEO Juanita Marois how the bison act as a keystone species that spreads seeds and supports other wildlife. Cultural programming is strong: Métis knowledge-holder Lilyrose Meyers taught me tufting and shared historical photos and laughter, there are craft workshops and large communal spaces (a Cultural Gathering Centre and a dining hall that seats hundreds), and the site hosts Métis Fest each summer for roughly 2,000 people. Meals and hospitality felt homespun and local — breakfasts in a small café where staffer Beth Braucht brought cappuccinos and dishes included saskatoon-berry coulis, bison sausage, and bannock — and sustainability projects like a solar farm and a permaculture garden are in progress. Whether canoeing in summer, skiing or snowshoeing in winter, or simply lying under the big Alberta sky in an igloo-like dome, the place is designed to connect visitors to Métis heritage, the land, and the night sky." - Carleigh Baker

This was my first visit to Metis Crossing, which is a beautiful location along the North Saskatchewan River, about an hour from Edmonton. I stayed for one night in a star gazing dome and it was a great experience. The domes are very well equipped, comfortable, and if you get a clear night like I did, being able to see the stars through the windows is amazing. I also did the evening fireside stories with Shirley, who also did my wildlife tour the next morning. I enjoyed both, but especially the wildlife tour - it is clear that Shirley really loves showing the animals to people and knows them very well. I had two meals at the bistro, both were very tasty. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. I will go back.

I attended the SVI conference held at Métis Crossing and it was the perfect venue. We saw Northern Lights two nights in a row (!!) and heard coyotes howling and witnessed thousands of geese migrating. Métis Crossing is a special place that I highly recommend visiting. Their food was delicious and nutritious and they went above and beyond to make sure those with dietary restrictions (dairy / gluten / vegetarian) were well taken care of. I’m looking forward to visiting again.

Can't comment on the rooms, I stayed in the trappers tent. They have a wood fire stove to keep warm, but personally I wouldn't stay in them in the fall again, I'm a wimp in the cold haha. Everything else about Metis Crossing was magical, was there for a networking event and the staff was AMAZING. Highly recommend taking a trip out there, the scenery is breathtaking.

We stayed this past weekend for the family camp. We opted for the trapper's tents as my children wanted to experience camping. The camp site was clean and there were flush toilets. The food at the bistro was great. It just took a while for the food. The activities where very family friendly. We did a guided tour of the site with Emma Anne, did they Wildlife tour and Archery. Sunday morning brunch was to die for. This is truly a hidden gem.

I was there yesterday for the first time - wow. The building and grounds are stunning. The staff we met were so welcoming, kind and friendly. They delighted in telling us about the Lodge and the history of the Metis in the area. I can't wait to go again and do the skywatch domes!

Exceeded my expectations! We did the wildlife tour and saw many bison (including white bison!), elk and horses. The architecture of the main buildings is gorgeous. It would be a perfect setting for a luxe wedding. The food in the bistro was beyond fantastic! We had the pickerel and bison burger and they were both 10/10. The service was excellent too. I bought some local jams and art from the lovely gift shop and the staff member at the shop was so warm and friendly. Everyone in our group had a fantastic time!

Yelp
For $15 you get to see helpful and engaging college students explain this fascinating part of Canadian culture. Facility is brand new and spotless. Also: * Stroll down the path and feast on some Saskatoon berries, choke cherries, and wild raspberries! * Enjoy and interesting and well-prepared lunch (smoked trout burger on bannock is the way to go)! * Ice cream featuring local berries! * Stay overnight in the trappers' cabins! * Hotel opening soon! Would a gift shop be nice (sashes!)? Sure would.

Yelp
Near smoky lake. Went to a persaud meteor event in December. I found it to be very disorganized. I called in the morning and they said events start at 6pm. I went a bit early to go have dinner at the restaurant. I ordered at the counter and sat down before everyone else. The wait staff proceeded to serve almost half the restaurant despite me ordering first. I had a hunch there was Asian racism here since I noticed another Asian couple completely ignored for over 30 min after sitting down and had to request a menu. But we are in small town alberta near smoky lake so that's completely expected. Once I mentioned something I got my food in less than 1 min which was surprising after waiting an hour for just a bison soup and burger. The food was okay. Potato salad was just boiled potatoes with mayo. The burger was nothing special. Food was a miss that's for sure. And probably won't ever be back. Not knowing what was going on the event made it underwhelming. At 7pm finally an announcement was made. There was an art station, a small speech and a little tent to watch a little show.
