These D.C. Diners Are (Really, Truly) Actual Diners | Eater DC

"This Arlington diner has a distinctly New York vibe, but it definitely passes on pretentiousness. All-day breakfast served until 10 p.m. showcases thick challah French toast and “super egg” sandwiches. Both celebrity chef Guy Fieri and President Joe Biden have stopped by the no-frills spot that opened in 1995. Opening time is 6 a.m. for early risers." - Tim Ebner

Where to Eat Along Lee Highway (Rt. 29) in Arlington | Eater DC

"This old-school diner, open until midnight daily, serves plenty of breakfast fare (think: pancakes and corned beef hash) as well as everything from burgers to a shrimp Caesar salad. I was very excited to try this ! I love diners and this one looked very promising. We ordered the turkey burger and the crab cake sandwich and they did not deliver. Maybe our mistake was not trying it for breakfast since most of the positive reviews were for the French toast. Our server was polite but not friendly at all which matter very much when dining out

Decided to go before the lunch rush but surprisingly, the diner was already packed by 11:00. Parking lot was also full but luckily I found a spot. Was seated near the diner counter in the small booth. Ordered the Turkey Triple Decker sandwich with french fries. My food was delicious and very fulfilling. My waiter, which I don't recall (sorry) was very attentive until a couple sat down at the diner counter then their group decided to follow behind them to place an order to go. Reminder the diner was already packed! They were standing blocking the aisle and I was trying to enjoy my meal but who can if their behinds were a couple of feet away from you! They were loud, using profanity and conversing about adult things. There were young children around and I was shocked the workers didn't say anything. I tried to get my waiter's attention but he was so caught up with the group. I had to wait over 30 minutes until I was able to get my waiter's attention. I had to ask another worker for a box to go and my check. Waited another 15 minutes 👎🏽! Despite the group issue and having to wait for my waiter, I might give them another try only because the food was delicious. This time, I'll ask not to be seated near the diner's counter.

Google
This is a great retro diner with all the chrome and neon lights. Parking is at the rear with access to the restaurant from either side. We were seated right away and the booths are comfy. Service is very good with all the servers dressed nicely and uniformly. The menu choices are extensive and they serve breakfast all day. There really is so much on the menu from Italian to Greek to American and more. Our food, we ordered the French onion soup, then I had the gyro and my wife the chicken and broccoli, all was excellent. We got dessert to go! Go here and have a great time with great food.

Stopped by here for Valentine’s day lunch with my girlfriend. This place is a DMV institution for a reason. I got the Corned Beef Reuben and she got the patty melt. We both very much enjoyed the food. The service was pretty good too with us getting drinks and refills pretty quickly when we asked. I would wholeheartedly recommend this place, but if you don’t care about my opinion, apparently it appeared on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives wit Guy Fieri, and if he showed this place off, then you know it will take you to Flavortown.

I knew I was going to enjoy this place the minute I saw the way it looked. The service was amazing, ask for the server who is morracan she was attentive and friendly. We have the nova scotia egg Benedict and it was by far one of my favorites and let me not get started on their hot chocolate!

Google
The vast menu has me wondering about more thing I want to try. Too bad I could only eat one item, as the portions here are huge! The Greek Salad was very tasty, I really enjoyed the dressing. All the desserts, and pastries are made in house, and are droolicious... Nick is an exceptional person when it comes to attentiveness to the customer, I pray more servers can take some tips from this gentleman. I will definitely come back!

Google
Great service and food. We got the French toast and sausage, waffle and breakfast sandwich (bacon, egg and cheese English muffin). The breakfast sandwich was so good but a bit overpriced. We'd expect a side of home fries or something for that price. French toast was good but extremely thick. Overall, good experience but I wouldn't go back often due to the price.

Nice Niegbor diner. Food is ok too. Stop by today for breakfast.

Yelp
Whoa!!! The French toast is da bomb!!!! Can't figure out why I can't do that at home. A slight crisp on the outside and soooooo creamy on the inside. I am hooked!! Never had a less than excellent experience at Metro 29

Yelp
I came here off the recommendation of a few coworkers and so far they're 0/2 for the food recommendations. First with the good, the service was fast and friendly. Love that. The diner looked pretty clean even though we got there just after a lunch rush I'm sure. The food was cooked perfectly; everything was the right color, temperature and consistency but unfortunately everything on mine and my bfs plate completely lacked in flavor. I'm talking simple salt and pepper- there was none. If you have dietary restrictions and like to season your food once you receive it at your table maybe you'll appreciate the lack of seasoning but it wasn't for me. I love diner food. Not a lot of fancy extras, just good tasty food- sorry to say this missed the mark for me.

Yelp
Breakfast options are pretty standard and what you expect from a dinner. There was plenty of parking. Our server was attentive and split the bill for our party's convenience. I got a coffee which was decent but a little on the pricier side that I would expect from a diner and an egg sandwich. Cheese was extra. Bagel was also extra my bad for misreading: Sandwiches on Bagel, Pita or English Muffin 1.50¢ extra That sandwiches come on something else, and bagels are part of the extra list. Oh well! It was a fine sandwich. For a diner, it hit what I needed - quick and reasonably priced. There wasn't anything outstanding about it, but it had some decent breakfast fares.

Yelp
On a recent trip to DC for a Commanders game, as usual, I researched a Triple D spot for breakfast. Clearly this place is not what it once was. The food was nothing to rave about and the atmosphere was not what we expected when you think old school diner. The food came out so fast it's almost as if they have their omelets pre made and in a warmer. It wasn't horrible, but definitely not worth going out of your way to try.

Yelp
This is definitely a long time favorite. I grew up near the area so we used to go there often growing up. It's a nostalgic place. They still have the big chocolate chip cookies we'd get as kids and they still look and taste the same as I remember. We usually get the french toast for breakfast since it's one of the best items on the menu. It's still the best french toast I've ever had from any place. They make the bread in-house so they cut them as huge slices. It melts in your mouth. So good. We also got the cheese danish which was gigantic but very tasty. It was sweet but not too sweet. It's usually really packed and busy on weekends but we went during a time when it's not so busy so we were seated quickly at a booth near the windows which was nice to see outdoors. The server came often to refill our coffees which we appreciated. You pay the check up at the front when you're done. Also at the front there's a fridge/case with cakes and desserts. The diner is pretty big with tables in the middle and booths on the ends. There's parking in the back and a bit on the side street.

Yelp
Greek food with all the classic diner plates. Local favorite with large portions. Love their spinach pie with salad while friends love their tuna sandwiches, fries and waffles.

Yelp
I have never had worse service at this place since it opened. Sunday evening is not even the B-team! Some high school-age (early college?) young man was inattentive to me even though I probably ordered the most expensive thing on the menu-- and even though he had no other customers until later (one other couple). Was it because I was a single female? Or does he give this bad service to everyone regardless of their sex? I have been going to this place since it opened literally, and normally the wait staff are very well trained, and efficient and friendly. He was none of these things. He showed up first to take my order, then to deliver my food, and much later to check on me. I got a refill on my soda, and that was the last I saw of him. Because my waiter had apparently gone home, the manager came to give me my check. I guess the young man had to go before one last check on me because of pressing matters with his studies, I'm sure. As to the food, I can say the baked potato was very good, the cream spinach was sort of gloppy and had to be reheated, and the ribeye was average tenderness and flavor, but it was done medium to order. Since it was virtually me alone on that side of the restaurant, I asked if they could change the channel to a news station. Nothing happened for the longest time nothing changed, and I thought they had decided not to do so. But what I discovered once I caught the attention of the waiter as he was interacting with the manager, maybe 15 minutes later, that he'd never even asked the manager. The manager then did change the channel. (Thank you for that, Mr. Manager). Please get back on your game Metro 29. I don't want to have to give up my favorite breakfast there of crabcakes Benedict. I have to add as a postscript that a man I believe to be the owner was sitting in a booth, catty-corner and one down from me with someone else across from him. But he could see me --he could see everything --and he never batted an eye or even spoke to my waiter. The photo below is from the website of Metro 29.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The server told me many of the ingredients are made from scratch. It's a great atmosphere that fully embraces the diner theme. There is free parking behind the restaurant making the visit easy and convenient. I'll be back!

Yelp
The diner looks like a classic American diner outside and in. Art deco decor rules the interior. The staff is very attentive, constantly refilling coffee cups, water glasses, and checking on us. The portions are huge. The prices are a bit high, but again, the portions are huge. My daughter asked for strawberries on her waffle. We expected a strawberry compote, but were pleasantly surprised with a massive amount of fresh berries and a huge pile of whipped cream.
google avatar

Yelp
They have made quite a few improvements since the last time I was here. You can park with ease. The service was good and the food was good as well. The restaurant is busy and they have a lot of items to go at the counter. The diner gives you that old fashioned experience that unfortunately has long gone.

Yelp
First: Top notch service. And not just for a diner, but by any standards. My wife and I visited when she was at the tail end of a pregnancy, and their manager(?) saw us walking towards the door and was immediately there to hold it open. Our waitress was very attentive without getting in the way, was personable and very polite. And our small interactions with other staff were great, too. They couldn't have have done a better job! We went with breakfast foods, but the menu seemed to have some great lunch and dinner options, too. I ordered a bit off menu... I asked for the challah French toast, but with strawberries and whipped cream, which they only list as a topping option for their Belgian waffle. They accommodated that request and didn't apply any unusual up charge. It was very good. Their French toast is on very thick cut challah, which makes for a very fluffy, and very filling, meal. The side of bacon I ordered came as a generous portion... not the two measly strips you get at some restaurants. There was enough that, when it arrived, my wife and I decided to split it and we both had as much as we wanted. The interior vibe is mostly standard diner with a touch of Pennsylvania "family restaurant." It's clean, comfortable, and well maintained. They also deserve some bonus points for good gardening work on the flower beds outside... It's not a make or break thing for a diner, but it makes for a more pleasant entrance and exit and shows that they mind the details. Whenever I drive by, they seem to be doing a good business, and based on my experience, that's no surprise. I'm sure I'll be back soon.

Yelp
McDonald's would be better. If you're going to have to open little plastic packets for everything and the whole menu is a la cart (raises the price) and half the servers are only there to bring food from the kitchen without a smile, why not save $20 and go to McDonald's? Food wasn't bad but it was unremarkable in every way.

Yelp
It's not too hard to find this cozy D.D.D. dinner, and there was plenty of parking in the rear. Walking into this classic stainless steel building, we were greeted and seated quickly. Daniel (or waiter) was prompt, courteous, and very helpful. We ordered coffee, and I tried a cup of their chicken noodle soup, which was seasoned perfectly. We each ordered their 8 oz. burgers. My wife ordered the cheeseburger with Swiss, and I went with the beefburger. They were cooked correctly and were very flavorful. The service throughout was great, and I wouldn't ask for more. I would definitely make this a repeat destination.

Yelp
Always a good place to go for breakfast. Our party had pancakes, crêpes eggs, and a BLT. Everything was really good.

Yelp
Excellent service. Friendly server. Had the French toast with bacon. Orange juice was fresh. Overall great experience

Yelp
Amazing breakfast spot! My favorite is the French toast and the chocolate chip pancakes. Ordering pancakes is pretty standard across all restaurants, but these are the best I've ever had. The dough is so fluffy, but they also have the consistency of a perfectly cooked banana bread..okay that might not make sense to you, but you will know what I mean when you eat them. Their desserts also look amazing (peep one of my pics). I have yet to get one, but next time I am there I will grab one of those eclaires. They have lots of room so you usually can get a table on the weekends. There is also a parking lot!
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
Breakfast / brunch is my favorite. Unfortunately it's others too and wait times can get a bit long on the weekends. The lunch and dinner are not my thing here. Only the breakfast and brunch.
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
The atmosphere outside is more "diner" than anything inside. The inside is far more upscale than diner. I was looking forward to a "good food, not a lot of fuss" diner experience and that wasn't what happened. We were there at 8:30 on a Friday night and the place wasn't really busy at all. I got a roast beef sandwich and sides were extra. There was nothing on the bread, which surprised me too. The beef was good and there was a lot. I got a baked potato and the combo was good. The service was excellent. I was surprised at the cost of the meal, which was definitely not my idea of "diner." All in all, while a good meal, you pay more than probably you should and it wasn't what I was looking for at that time.
google avatar

Wade B.

Yelp
The service was great The ambiance is homey and pleasant The food Corned beef hash with 2 eggs and home fries with toast The hash was very salty And the fried potatoes were a little burned The coffee, juice, were very good and the staff kept my cup fold until I asked them to stop I will try again soon and order something else before passing any judgement

Yelp
We go here all the time with our Dad, who is 86. The service is so nice and everyone is so friendly and they treat you like family. That's just the service.... The food is so delicious and the portions are colossal. My favorites are.... Chicken Parm dinner, Open-faced Turkey, The salads are huge and delish.... The breakfasts and the Challa bread is wonderful.

Kathy W.

Yelp
Great diner and the service is fantastic. Staff is very attentive and the place is immaculate.
google avatar

Barbara W.

Yelp
The entire staff was so friendly! All the options of food were amazing. I ended up getting the deluxe jumbo burger. It comes with fries and onion rings plus coleslaw and I can't forget the pickle on the side. The dessert options are crazy too. Then the outside looks so cool with the old style diner. Don't pass this place up because it's worth it.

Nicole H.

Yelp
The outside of the building is so cute! The food was alright and the server was very kind. Their sandwiches come with a side of coleslaw, but they won't substitute fries for the coleslaw so you have to purchase your own side of fries. I wish they allowed substitutions. It seems like a way for them to make a quick bit of money.

Yelp
I lover Diner food. It reminds me of home cooked breakfast that my mom used to make me while I was growing up. Some of the best memories. Thanks to Metro 29 Diner I got to relive some of those. The French Toast was a thicc boy and very well cooked. Load it up with butter and syrup you will feel like you are taking a bite out of warmth. The corned beef hash brown was wonderful and my 2nd favorite thing form metro diner. It was a breakfast after a boys night out and the boys were all happy. A 4/5 is my review for Metro 29.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food and service. One of the servers, Hyat, has even become a good friend of mine. Also had great service from Justice, Kofi, and Laila.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
It doesn't get much better than this if you want a classic diner with breakfast all day. They get busy and had to remake my order twice to get it right but it was so good and they were so nice, it was all good. Great omelets and service. Look forward to returning. Easy parking and places to wait for a table if busy.

Yelp
Chef Candra reviews Metro 29! I had the Broiled Rainbow trout but in the video I said poached. My apologies. It came with mashed red potatoes and spinach. The menu says potato and vegetable. My meal was comforting to my soul and I recommend everyone in and out of town swing by to experience an ultra diner. Guy Fieri visited in 2010 and it was featured on the show called " Diners, Drive-ins and Dives ". Well deserved in my opinion. Peter Bota is a Greek American man from New York. Two families came together to create magic. They have a bakery in the basement part of the building and all baked goods are made to perfection daily. They offer 18 different pastries in total. They also have two glass cases displaying the delightful desserts. It is said that saving room for dessert is a must as per the website. My waitress Fatima was very kind and knowledgeable about the menu. Special thanks to Steven and Patti Rosenberg for an amazing experience. I look forward to dining again very soon. I rate them 4.5 out of 5 for presentation, taste, authenticity and great customer service. They are open daily from 6:00 am - 12:00 am. Remember to make every plate great! Yelp
This was our first time here and starting from service to food everything was great. High recommend this place!!! Staff is nice and friendly, the food was nicely prepared and very filling!!!

Yelp
The Metro 29 diner is a throwback to 50's with the jukebox and everything. Anything you get here off the menu will not disappoint:) This restaurant has been featured on Diners, Drive-In's and Dives on the Food Network with Guy Fieri hosting the show. The service is quick and friendly, plenty of parking!! I love the exterior and interior decor as mostly it 1950's inspired.
google avatar

Sammy R.

Yelp
The best diner around. Feels like a slice of Americana. All of the food hits, the staff is extremely welcoming. If you're having an itch for a hearty breakfast, this will definitely scratch that.

Yelp
Pretty good breakfast food! I ordered a create your own omelette with ham, mozzarella, and onion with white toast and potatoes. Wasn't expecting the potatoes to be like a hash brown but still good; wanted it to be a bit crispier though. The omelette was great, especially with the stringy mozzarella cheese. The toast came with some butter on it too so that was nice. Overall good breakfast food that was very filling for the size and price (~$13).

Victoria P.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time with my dad and brother. We all got breakfast items. The service was very attentive, and the food came out quicker and hotter than any place I'd ever been to. My dad got the pancakes, which he loved, and my brother got the waffles, eggs, sausage, and homefries, which he also loved. I knocked a star off my review due to the French toast. I heard rave reviews about them, so I was very excited to try them because I'm a French toast maniac. To my disappointment, they were lackluster. They're very thick and soft but had no flavor but mild sweetness. In my opinion, French toast should be cinnamon forward with a buttery aftertaste. These tasted like sweet bread, basically. I never really liked thick French toast from anywhere because the flavor doesn't usually soak into the bread, as is the case here. I'm still on the lookout for the best restaurant French toast. But the bacon and eggs were pretty good (hard to mess up bacon and eggs, but you never know). They have a fine selection of desserts and we took a few home, including the strawberry shortcake, the carrot cake, the cheesecake, the chocolate cake with chocolate mousse layers, and an eclair. The portion sizes are big, which is most appreciated. So far, we've only tried the cheesecake, strawberry shortcake, and chocolate cake, and all have been very tasty. The place is clean with a nice atmosphere, but the food is pretty standard diner food with subpar French toast. But I think it's still worth checking out due to it being on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Yelp
My husband and I have decided to check out local diners. He selected Metro 29. The environment was bright and clean. The reception was fine and efficient. The server who we had lack any personality and spoke very little. We referred to him as Lurch (just between the two of us). The cashier was also not very hospitable. It surprised my husband when she said "thank you. Enjoy the rest of your day. The food was bland, not very flavorful at all. My husband ordered the crab cake Benedict with Canadian bacon. I had the French toast with scrambled eggs and cheese with bacon. We will keep testing and posting.

Yelp
For our first time here, we had a very enjoyable meal with very nice staff. The food (breakfast in our case) was very good. I had an omelette with sausage, Swiss cheese and onions, rye toast and potatoes. Strange combination maybe, but it worked out wonderfully! We also saw a local celebrity (senior military and political appointee) who I won't name here in case Metro is a regular hangout of his. Great location. Delicious food. Wonderful staff. Relatively good prices.
google avatar

Carly C.

Yelp
Classic diner food. I got the sausage egg and cheese and wasn't a fan. Side of potatoes was a generous size but weren't super tasty. I think if I were to go back I'd try pancakes or French toast.
google avatar

Isabel W.

Yelp
such a sweet classic family diner! so many regulars hugging staff, which is so cute to see. super quick & friendly service, extensive menu and one of the best omelettes i've ever had! the french toast is thick and custardy & the coffee is good too. they had a delicious looking selection of pastries, muffins, & desserts too that we'll have to try next time. got seated immediately too and on a saturday morning!

Yelp
Are you kidding???? $17.60 for a CHEESEBURGER?? Which came with a pile of limp, mealy fries, dinky paper cup of inedible coleslaw, and a skinny pickle spear. Our server was clearly not enjoying life and had to be flagged down for a water refill twice. Also had to flag her down to get the check, and after dropping it off, she never returned. Come to find out, you have to queue up at the cash register to pay. With the price of this DINER FOOD, I'd expect better service but no. Of course the place was packed, so all I can think is that people either have gobs of money, or else no one cooks anymore and doesn't realize what a complete ripoff this place is. What hacked me off most was that the menu price for a cheeseburger is $13.00. Still too much, but the least expensive thing on the menu. I asked the server if it came with fries & she said yes. But when I got the check, it was $16.00, $17.60 with tax, and said "cheeseburger deluxe" so I guess the wilted, greasy fries made it "deluxe", to the tune of an extra 3 bucks. Avoid this place.

Yelp
Sometimes a review doesn't need a ton of detail because it's simply good or not. In this case for Metro 29, it is a diner and it is GOOD. Good Service and tasty food. And always busy, so the trick is to order ahead and carry out or ask for a table once you get there and your food is already ready. They'll sit you. You're welcome for the top. Cheers.
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
My daughters soccer team went here for lunch after a Sunday game at a local middle school. We had called ahead for a party of 25. The staff had us seated in 5 minutes. The service was amazing and the food was great! Everyone's orders were out with in 15 minutes. A group of 25 was in and out in just a little over an hour. Thank you for your hospitality Metro 29 Diner!

Melissa C.

Yelp
Ummm, came for the crab cake and was not disappointed. Amazing!!!! I really liked the string beans as well (subbed in for french fries). Server was helpful and prompt.

Yelp
Really missed the mark for me. Came in on a Saturday and was seated immediately - diner was populated but not crazy busy. Our group ordered a cheeseburger deluxe and chicken Caesar wrap. The cheeseburger was really plain, nothing special. Chicken Caesar wrap was open in the back (not fully folded) so made it difficult to eat. Waitress didn't come over at all to refill our coffee / water. Also something weird going on with the heat bc our table was literally like sitting in a sauna. Felt the prices were way too high for what you were getting. It was $7 for two coffees. Each of our meals were ~$15 without tip. Wouldn't return. Recommend for a quick bite with low expectations.
google avatar

Ross L.

Yelp
Nice diner ambience, but all of our food was bland. My omelette lacked flavor, the waffle was fairly tasteless, even the hash browns tasted like nothing. Do they just not use salt and butter here?
google avatar

Jackie V.

Yelp
I've been going to Metro 29 since I was a kid! This diner is a staple in Arlington and they are open practically every hour. My favorites: Breakfast - Greek omelette with rye toast and hash browns extra crispy or the waffle with strawberries. Lunch: Hamburger Deluxe with Onion Rings Dinner: Chicken Souvlaki with a Diet Coke. Dessert: Chocolate pudding with whipped cream or chocolate shake Service is fast and friendly despite it sometimes being packed. Some of the servers have been there since I was a kid. It can be a wait depending on when you go. Breakfast on the weekends is always jammed. Ordering to go is always fast and easy! Accessible entrance and tables or booth options. Gendered bathrooms. Large parking lot with handicapped spots. Pro Tip: to look like a regular you pay up front at the register not at the table.
google avatar

Marie E.

Yelp
19.95 for a Greek salad with chicken. So overpriced. I had a patty melt and the meat was dry. I definitely think there are other better options in the area. I like that there's parking tho.

Yelp
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives went here? I was excited to try his diner out for that reason - I love DDD. I went here for a working lunch with five coworkers. We were sat immediately and approached by our waitress shortly after being sat. We were off to a good start. I got a turkey burger with french fries. My coworker's meal came with soup. She didn't want it, so I was able to try chicken noodle soup in addition to my meal. The chicken noodle soup was...disappointing. It tasted like Campbell's chicken noodle soup. Not the upgraded version of Campbell's soup, but rather the plain Jane version, version number one with the plain red and white can created in the late 1800s, lol. (Sidebar - Campbell's upgraded "chunky"soup is bomb). My turkey burger was good, no complaints. Overall, this place was extra REGULAR. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again. Sorry,

Yelp
After not eating here in a year, we dropped in for our usual French toast and Nova Scotia Benedict. We were not disappointed. This is as good or better than I remember it. The French toast has this slightly gooey center that is exactly right. The nova Benedict is my favorite in the area. If you're looking for a Bob and Edith's style meal, this is where you go for the better version of that. I can't wait to return.

Yelp
Over the years I have made it a point to drop in to keep trying to like this diner. The food is the full range of Diner Fare and then some. But I fear the adage of Not all things are as they should be. This brings cost into the picture a simple Breakfast coffee bacon and eggs with the Arlington County and State sales tax is almost 20.00 (Tip is encouraged adds 1.00-4.00). I have experienced service of both extremes so you cannot think of this as I have to be somewhere at ______ and is a good idea to stop. Plus is that it is kept clean and the greeting seems sincere. But ! Budget wins and about 20% to high in this diner's choice goes elsewhere Check prices but I doubt they are getting lowered.

Yelp
We had a crabcake dinner, and it was delicious. I highly recommend this place the portions are large and you can't go wrong with almost anything that you order.
