Yelp
I'd say that Metropolitan at the 9 is a very modern hotel going for a "sultry" feel. You could certainly stay for business, but a lot of the touches seem to have more of a romantic and couple's design versus the standard "utility" of a business hotel. Expect deep reds, a see-through in-room shower, erotic-ish bodyscape art on hotel room walls, and more. Fantastic for a getaway or couples, but probably not the best choice for staying with coworkers on a work trip. We'd definitely come again in a heartbeat. It has its downsides, but it's all-around an amazing hotel.
Protip: If you don't want to share elevators with groups of people, ask for a room NOT on floor 12. (Rooftop bar is located on 12.)
(Review updated for changes in 2022 including new "trendy" rooftop bar and removal of all in-room purchases)
PROS:
-The rooms are gorgeous as well. Each room feels extremely luxurious and well-decorated. The room was extremely clean, and everything felt spacious, luxurious, and very, very nice. It definitely felt like a room that was a treat to stay in.
-Hotel was nicely-located downtown. It's walkable to quite a few restaurants - including the Southern Tier brewery. There are some coffee shops and other places that are simply walkable too. If you wanna valet your car and not touch it your entire trip, it's definitely possible.
-The hotel has Cleveland's only indoor dog park. Up on one of the upper floors, the dog park is a cute, large indoor hallway for dogs to run around. There's a waterproof area for bathroom purposes, and they ask you to clean up any non-water messes. The place was pretty spotless while we were there. It's not the prettiest thing you've ever seen, but it's a really cute addition to an urban building, and it definitely works as a large running space for a pet. There are benches for the humans too.
-This hotel is equipped with a ridiculous amount of elevators. I think it was either 6 or 8. You pick your floor, and it directs you to the elevator you need. We never waited for more than a second or two for an elevator the entire time we were there.
-Staff was super friendly. The front desk staff welcomed us every time we came inside. When we were using a luggage cart and moving our own stuff, multiple staff members offered to do it for us.
-SO many food and drink options right in the hotel. I think there's four bar/restaurant options right inside your own hotel. For people trying to avoid COVID, the in-room dining is pretty much the full restaurant's menu - and the rooftop bar and patio restaurant are all open-air.
-The ONLY hotel we've been to in the last year still offering daily room service. Staff respected the do not disturb sign though.
CONS:
-So, the glass shower within your room is either a serious "pro" or a serious "con". There's a stand-up shower that's located in the middle of the room that's clearly visible from all sides. It has frosted panes, but you can definitely see the bits of the person who's showering in some angles. I'm actually really confused why they would include it standard on double-queen bedrooms - where you're likely staying with strangers or groups. In a King room, it makes sense. There isn't a privacy curtain (unlike the similar version in the Chicago EMC2 Autograph hotel), so if you're staying with non-intimate people, I'd recommend having a gameplan for having people leave the room while others shower. For intimate partners, well, it's definitely a really nice touch to the room.
-The nearby area is a little rough. If you walk one block one way, you'll be in a busy, hopping part of town. If you walk one block the opposite way, building's windows are boarded over and everything is abandoned.
-The rooftop bar is very, very hopping and trendy. This isn't necessarily bad, but it depends on what you're going for. The muted colors and calm music of our 2019 visit has been replaced with bright colors, an insane amount of staff, and loud pop music - including the fact that many tables/chairs were off-limits to a party of two and there was hostess seating and a waitlist the entire time we were there.
-Valey is pricey at about $50 a day. You can most definitely self-park easily (lots of parking garages in a two block radius), but definitely check online reviews and safety procotols to try to ensure your car will be safe.
-No in-room recycling "trash" cans. That was odd.
-The in-room AC/heat is really weird. As far as we could tell the entire time, it doesn't have an "off" mode. It will constantly try to get the room's temperature to the posted temperature on the thermostat. That sounds nice in theory, but in reality, it means the heat ends up blowing sometimes in the middle of July if the temperature drops below your posted threshold - making you want to turn down the temperature even further. It's definitely a constant game with the thermostat. It's definitely very effective, though. If you stand in various parts of the room, you feel that heat or cooling instantly.
