Grocery Shopping Guide for Seattle: Supermarkets, Butcher Shops, Fish Markets, CSAs, and More - Eater Seattle

"Leaning high-end, Metropolitan Market is known for its commitment to quality. Shoppers can make selections like the grocery’s from-scratch guacamole, Choi’s Kimchi, and Beyond Burger patties." - Megan Hill

Google
Nice grocery store. Good soup selection. As always, seafood soups -Cioppino and Clam Chowder- are located in the seafood section, separate from other soups. I couldn't find an indoor seating area, looks like they just have a few picnic tables outside by the main road.

Google
Not as good as magnolia market in admiral way. Had lots of different things in delicious area.... not a lot of non alcoholic variety in bulk but decent amount in coolers. Self check sucks unless have 5 things highly don't recommend. Small store. Deli area (salad bar, bakery, food to go, soup to go, etc) was highlight of the store. Staff was friendly and helpful but sure they hate the self check area too. I'm from north dakota and I can self check quicker than checkers. Not here. Need a wand too. Honestly if not for staff would been irritated

Google
Fun market with lots of options. I was expecting higher prices, so I was pleasantly surprised to see fair ones. The deli area was awesome. They have great allergy friendly selections. The staff were all helpful, however I watched a supervisor berate an elderly woman whose mask had fallen below her nose. Quite the power trip, and I was rather put off by that.

Google
Stopped by to get picnic provisions and ended up ordering a fried chicken dinner, sweet potato fries, a mini cake, and petit fours. The prices were fair for the food we purchased though I could not say the same for the quality. The chicken was dry and tough. The sides weren't any better (roasted carrots and tomato rice). Maybe it was because it was ordered early evening when the food had sat for many hours? In any case, thought the desserts would be excellent and save the picnic but the cake and petit fours were also a disappointment. Didn't experience any lines at checkout, parking was easy, and the store is small but well stocked. Will try again next time we visit Discovery Park.

Google
My favorite grocer in Seattle!! Love this store. Perfect size, very well stocked, superbly displayed, excellent selection. One of my favorites is they have excellent French bread! I look forward to visiting this store every time i visit Seattle.

Lucy Lu

Google
They sell expired products. I bought this on Dec 2nd night, ate some the next day, only to realized this was 4 days over best by date. I called the store and the only resolution they offered was I could return it if I wanted to. Never said anything about steps to take to avoid this food safety issue from reoccurring.

Ginger York

Google
Nice neighborhood market with excellent produce, cheese and meats selection, and dairy/gluten free options.

Google
I love this store all Metropolitan markets, there a cut above most, quality, fresh and awesome! There home made cookies are to dye for, fun shopping experience!!!

Yelp
I love a good seasonal mushroom pie and this one comes with truffle cream. Need I say more?

Yelp
The biggest hit for this location is that self checkout is two stalls. To compare to other locations, Queen Anne has six or seven self checkout stalls, and Mercer has at least four. I don't know if they don't get enough foot traffic to this location or if it's to prevent loss, but it definitely made me not want to come back. While their selection of Rind chips (what I was there to clean them out of) was well stocked, the store was incredibly chilly and fairly empty. Their parking area was a small lot attached to the back door and the entire store seemed designed oddly. All in all, there are nicer, larger locations to go to, and this Magnolia Metropolitan Market is not the vibe.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
The self checkout is closed and they don't manage their lines well when it's busy. Kind of disappointing.

M. J.

Yelp
We live close and come here often. Mainly coffee and for produce. The staffing is skeleton crew in the deli and over thanksgiving the hot food section was closed. The checkers are generally not very happy and the person who lingers at the self checkout but doesn't help makes people avoid it. The prices here are high and compared to Sand Point or QA it doesn't even feel like the same brand of store. Updating to say there is a man who has worked here forever in the deli who is clearly very ill and should not be working with food. He's been getting more unwell as the year has gone on. People don't want to be helped by him. Come on Met Market. I feel for this guy.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the charcuterie Mecca of Seattle. Cheeses, dried and smoked slice meats and olives from across the globe. Good luck finding a better prosciutto selection anywhere. Fresh made sushi, coffee and sandwiches. Good selection of alcohol.

Revive L.

Yelp
Don't mind them overpricing things, I do mind the poor selection of items they lack and lack of quality smoothies and orange juices they have elsewhere. They don't have Columbia gorge drinks/smoothies and they lack the Aloha bars like they do at their other locations. They also don't carry quality laundry detergent either like Zum Indigo Wild.

Lucy L.

Yelp
Not your friendly neighborhood grocery store anymore. I ordered a too good too go bag and asked my mom to pick up for me. There's a screenshot of the order page and complete order ID. But the person refused to give my mom the bag, claiming that they can't go off of a screenshot. If you're not familiar with too good too go, the order has to be picked up within a certain window. And once the window passes, they won't provide a refund. I'm really curious what person will create a convincing screenshot with an active order id to steal some leftovers. The pickup instruction from 2g2g reads :"Please see the team at the bakery counter to present your order receipt and collect your Surprise Bag!" There's no mention of having to have the app. So why was metropolitan market so difficult?

Yelp
This review is specifically for the produce: I come to Metro Market because I live nearby and it's presented as a "nice upscale market" but in reality I am constantly disappointed by their produce. EVERY SINGLE TIME I get produce there (I really mean every single time) I come home and produce is old and spoiled the next day. For a place that is that expensive and brands itself as a upscale market, they really don't put much effort into having fresh produce. So frustrating and disappointing.

Anna C.

Yelp
Several thoughts. The prices here are outrageous now. There is at least one person at the bakery who has zero customer service skills and we avoid when working. There needs to be more basic sandwich items and easier deli wait times. The deli always gets the amounts of what your order wrong. Love the flowers and some of the checkers. Adding that the self check lane appears to only be open when one particular employee is there and she stands ON TOP of you. There can be 100 people waiting in the other lanes and 2 self checks closed. Everyone comments about this but it remains.

Yelp
I've been to this grocery store many times, since it's by far the closest grocery store to my house. Customer service here is consistently well above average. The cheese, olive, chocolate, packaged snacks, and produce sections are all excellent. This grocery store makes fresh mozzarella balls daily! They're amazing!! Selection is pretty sparse for pre-packaged meals. Deli is sub-par, especially compared to the delis at some of the other Met Market locations. Bakery is not great, not awful - they have some really good gluten-free options, but the options overall are somewhat limited. Smaller than the other Met Markets. The floral section is quite good. This store keeps up with holidays and stocks fun holiday selections for the 4th of July, Halloween (amazing variety of pumpkins available this year!), etc. I don't feel like I can go to this store for my weekly big grocery shopping trip, due to the somewhat limited selection overall and the fact that several basic items are way overpriced. However, it's a great place to pick up snacks, flowers, gluten-free muffins, kombuchas, cheese, chocolate, olives, packaged snacks such as chips or crackers, and/or fresh produce in a pinch. I like that the lines for the cash registers are almost always very short any time of day or night. There is no self-check-out option, but the cashiers are all great so if there was one I personally probably wouldn't use it anyway. Tips: 1. The Karine & Jeff soup line is delicious, filling, decently priced for the quality, and far less processed than most pre-prepared soups. 2. Met Market's own box of chocolates, which they sometimes stock and sometimes do not stock, rivals that of some of the best chocolatiers in Seattle. Definitely worth a try, and, if they happen to not be stocking it, a trip to the chocolate aisle never disappoints. 3. For a more lavish, bigger, better-stocked Met Market, try a different Met Market location. If you've been to other Met Market locations already, this location may be a bit of a disappointment. If you haven't yet been to any other Met Market locations, don't judge the other locations based on this location - this location is kind of the baby brother of the chain.

Yelp
We were recommended to go here for their cakes, but that cookie was absolutely amazing!!! The cake was great too, but the cookie on the warming plate was one of the best I've ever had. Totally worth the trip out.

Marc B.

Yelp
Excellent customer service - great produce. We love the Metro Market in Magnolia (5 min from where we live).

Yelp
I recently visited Seattle from Austin Texas. Our grocery store bar is pretty high (Whole Foods,Central Market,HEB!). The Met -West Seattle was impressive. I went three days in a row and customer service was very friendly. I loved their deli and pre-packaged foods. Decent wine selection and excellent floral. Quite amazing how they get some much in a small space. Well done!
google avatar

Nijole T.

Yelp
My favorite grocery store to shop at in Seattle and one of the reasons I look forward to visiting! I love their famous cookie, that is already worth a stop and they make a great gift sure to please. Beautiful hot and cold food section to easily have a quick dinner at home. Service is exceptional and they carry many local brands not found elsewhere, highly recommended!
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Whatever you do don't go here. You will be sucked into it's delicious trap filled with primb rib, brisket, hot breakfast, a fresh salad bar, sushi, gelato, and so many more scrumptious findings. These cookies especially! HOLY COW! They are always warm and gooey and ready to fill the hole in your heart that you didn't know you had. I discovered this place 5 days ago. And I have been here every day since. Someone send help! You will find me hovering near the bakery! It's definitely not the cheapest place to get groceries or a hot lunch but it's definitely delicious! And will make you want more as soon as you leave!
google avatar

Vicki H.

Yelp
Quality fresh array of foods you would expect to find and fare far beyond your expectations. Come prepared to be enticed and inspired. You're about to spice up your culinary spirit. Take time to touch base with the top notch wine selection. Service matches Met Market's dedication to an exceptional grocery shopping experience. And don't forget The Cookie, "get serious about chocolate."
google avatar

Yelp
I liked previously the market, the prices are above the average, but it's local and convenient, and the place had very good customer service. But recently customer service got much worse. My wife had bad experience communicating to the stuff few weeks ago, but we thought might be they had a bad day. But today I've got rude comments from the employee on where I put my bikes, while bike rack was blocked by a tent

Chris H.

Yelp
Would never come here again for lunch, not that nice employee's. And not that much of a hot lunch. So far this is the third metropolitan market I've walked out of for lunch. Not one employee asked me if i needed help. I passed at least 15 employee's. Not a friendly place, went to Albertson's down the road, every employee there was happy and nice, and paid half the price for almost the same items. Not worth coming here, probably next time it'll just be a cookie.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a great local grocery store with tons of offerings from local purveyors. Came here for the poke. They have a wonderful selection of various poke and you can try a little of this and that. They also have this really good cookie, but it's so decadent it's like something you gotta share and I also felt it was expensive for a cookie. Their alcohol/beer selection is quite good. Lots of local choices for beer. And a fair amount of whisky options. I like how they have a lot of local ice cream too.
google avatar

Shaylor S.

Yelp
We came here to get the cookies that were supposedly really good and I was let down a bit. They might not have been fresh because it was later in the day. They were just pretty average, pretty stale, and a little pricy. Seems like this place is on the pricer side with everything they offer there so be aware... and I don't recommend getting the cookies if they aren't fresh our of the oven.
google avatar

Ryan L.

Yelp
A wonderful "little" market right here in Magnolia! By little I mean not a chain supermarket; but little doesn't describe their selection! This gem of a market can cater to all your taste delights. From their homemade soup counter, to olive bar, to meat & cheese selection -- this place has it all. Best is the wide selection of local brands and hard-to-find labels and products. Most especially a great selection of gluten free products (even breads!!). Love the fresh produce section too. So bright and colorful, it's just asking to be picked! Be aware of prices though...it's Seattle, so you know you're going to pay for it; but somethings are marked up too high that get here. That said, still a place to frequent!!
google avatar

Kristiana M.

Yelp
Still horrible customer service like I subject to yesterday. I was told to not take it personally. Will only go to the QA location from now on.
google avatar

Chelsea J.

Yelp
If you want to spend $$$$ on your groceries, come here. The benefits are - beautiful produce, florist level bouquets, a plethora of high end lunch options, and knowledgeable, helpful staff who get paid a fair wage, and get health insurance benefits (or so I have heard). I have ordered a cake from the bakery which was absolutely delicious. They did lettering on it free of charge. Their cookie is To Die For. If you have one cookie for the rest of your life, let this be it. They serve tasty coffee and Italian sodas at their cafe, and prices on their drinks are comparable to other cafes. Their grocery prices are high. This is not a one stop shop for all your grocery needs, but you should be able to get some of the essentials.
google avatar

marjory T.

Yelp
Tried of their employees parking I. Front of my house Today no parking because of their shoppers I get it But be nice to park in front of my home Did they ever try arriving early and park on 35th Instead of 3
google avatar

Anaher B.

Yelp
So again I'm just updating- we've been a few more times and frankly their customer service has not changed. It's a hit or miss but I will say that usually there is one particular girl at the cafe who is kind and tries. I am not oblivious to people having bad days but here it seems like most people do. Anyway their coffee is so good and that cookie everyone talks about it's a hit or miss I've received very fresh ones and stale ones. The fresh one was great! Might try to make it myself!
google avatar

Yelp
I really like this neighborhood market, and yes spendy... but my experience w many of the staff makes it worth it. PS, if you like poke... there's is really good! I think they have a few varieties, mainly albacore and ahi. One thing, and not sure if this is due to the recent weather, but while they're open until 11, some of the departments seem to start putting their food away around 8pm, which I found confusing.

Nadine S.

Yelp
We are so blessed to have Met Market in Magnolia. The quality of their produce, meat, seafood and speciality items is terrific. It shows that it's a small business as the team feel like family that truly connect with local customers. It's one of the best things about Magnolia to have a grocery store like this in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Aurel L.

Yelp
Good experience here. Breakfast here is good. Bought a Hydroflask here and had issues with it and returned it no problem even without receipt. Just overall great customer care and service. We need more companies like Metropolitan Market. Been to their West Seattle location (3rd favorite), their main Queen Anne location, their Issaquah location (my favorite), Kirkland (2nd favorite), their Eastlake location and Magnolia. Not much bad to say about these guys and gals. Pretty on point. Sometimes they don't have the stuff you're looking for so you gotta know which stores to alternate and shop for.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
Smaller than other locations I've been to, however they've got two parking lots on either side of the store. Great selection of meats, fruits, vegetables and specialty items. Compared to other grocery stores, their prices are relatively the same but it all depends on what you're looking for. I mainly come here for their grab and go meals. Their hot bar buffet has a posted schedule of the type of cuisine they'll be featuring during the week. As for dessert I can never decide on to get because of the selection variety. Everything looks so good!
google avatar

Yelp
Well, well, well. You're reading this review as your wondering whether Metropolitan Market would be a good place to get some groceries or prepared food? The answer is YES! You will not be disappointed, if you decide to go to Metropolitan to buy just about anything. One caveat, excellence does not come cheap. Expect greatness and expect to pay for it. The store itself, is very meticulously kept up. As you enter the store, you'll get a sense of this as you can see all the fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats and even the kitchen in the back all laid out to perfection. The staff always looks dressed for success with aprons and all. The fruits and vegetables are always great, and there's a pretty good selection of organics. The specialty cheese and meat counter is great and the people there are super helpful, should you ever need any. They've recently relocated the baguettes and other breads back by the bakery goods, which I didn't really like. The prepared food/kitchen is awesome. I sometimes go there to buy bacon in the morning, because they just cook it better than I ever could. I have not idea how they do it. The butcher is awesome. They're really friendly and also really helpful, there's great stuff back there, no matter what you need. The premade hamburgers of all different bleu cheese, mushroom or other makings. Selection and quality of fresh fish, smoked fish is great.

Cosmic C.

Yelp
The store merchandising, product selection & culture is now a mini sterile grocery store. The boutique market is gone now replaced with a replication of every grocery store in West Seattle. All the local & specialty high quality is being replaced with Metropolitan Brand = Safeway style coupon clipper mimic products. I rarely go there anymore, even the checks stands lost their glimmer of cool Puget Sound made jellies, chocolates & gourmet delights. Same ...same. ..same at the deli - boring & over priced dittos.
google avatar

Monica B.

Yelp
This is the closest MM to my house. It has everything I would expect to find from quality produce to a large variety of yogurt to high end soft drinks. The actual store feels smaller than other locations which means that inventory is compressed. There are parking lots on either side of the store but they get full at peak times. As with other MMs, they have a hot case of food, as well as cold bars and refrigerated foods that you can grab and go. I spend most of my time here on this half of the store. A perfect day for me is to pick up a container of poke and head to Discovery Park to have a quiet lunch overlooking the water. Pro tip: If you're not a fan of cold rice (like me), ask the hot deli for a serving of hot jasmine rice. They always have great seasonal fruit samples available for tasting before you buy and a lovely display of flowers are you enter the store. One of my other favorite things is to browse the chocolate selection for a few new bits. Good quality MM, close to my home, and has everything I'd expect.

Chris B.

Yelp
We love met market but the woman in housewares is just AWFUL. she acts like housewares is her home and she hates people. My family and I spend a lot of $ here and she has always given us dirty looks and even yelled at us and accused one of our family members of being a squatter bc she was enjoying food in the eating area of the store which is in housewares of course. She really needs a new gig. Terrible attitude.
google avatar

Doug C.

Yelp
It's hard to beat Met Market for what it does. Again, it's a matter of expectations. Will the prices be higher than Fred Meyer? Absolutely. Will there be an absurd variety of cheeses available? Sure. Will there be a nice compliment of pre-prepared foods and wines? Yes. As far as Met Markets go, this is at the smaller end. The parking lot is small and can be crowded and there may not be the entire variety of items that you want to get. Still, there aren't a lot of options in this part of Magnolia (think Albertsons) and if you're looking for specialty items, this is a place to go. Plus, they have a number of special events. Sometimes even featuring Fabio.
google avatar

Simon R.

Yelp
This is an expensive, "high-end" grocery store. Meaning, they spare no expense making or sourcing incredible food and neither will you when you pay for it! Although I am somewhat skeptical of the "high-end" marketing label (an apple is still an apple, after all) and I'm sure the makeup is high, I love the quality that I see in almost everything. They have an amazing deli case, dessert case, produce section and clearly focus on quality. I love the poke bar! Poke bar! (Although, they should really consider serving the sushi rice hot and sticky instead of cold, as now.). In general, an excellent place to get lunch or expensive groceries.
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
The food here is great, I have no complaints about the food whatsoever, but this review is for the customer service I've received by a particular male cashier. I stop by Metro occasionally with some of my coworkers for lunch as we work in the Magnolia neighborhood. When I go to check out, I usually receive great customer service from the lady with curly short hair (wish I knew her name). She is friendly, helpful and always offers to tape the lid of my soup so it doesn't spill. However, a couple of times, when she is not available, I have checked out with the guy who is usually on the right side. As a customer, when I say hi, thank you and receive no proper 'thank you' or 'have a great day', no eye contact, nothing; this is super irritating to me. Instead of flirting with my friend, please resort back to your basic customer service skills by actually wanting to help your customers with a genuine smile.
google avatar

Tihani S.

Yelp
I pulled into parking lot at 9:55pm and they are closed. Everywhere they advertise (except for Yelp I see) says they are open until 11pm. Even on their own front door. Nothing about closing early on certain days of the week. Grrrr!
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
the recent renovation has made this one of the best supermarkets in Seattle. The produce section is excellent and the hot food bar/bakery is also very good. I love that they have a poke bar. The creamy sriracha salmon poke is my favorite for sure. Parking can be tricky if you visit on the weekend- but it's nice and quiet during the week. The people that work here are super nice. I'm also a fan of their beer selection.
google avatar

Sophia T.

Yelp
This is my happy place! Whenever my friend comes over we always stop by met market to get snacks before heading off to Discovery Park (coming here is a bit of a sacred ritual). We love their specialty sodas (clementine is our favorite), cinnamon rolls, sushi, and, of course, The Cookie, though these are just some of many other tasty offerings. For this stuff I think the price is super reasonable, but I can't speak to actually grocery shopping here. The employees are super awesome too, we recognize many of them. They probably can't say the same about us since there are a ton of people who come in, but I like to believe that maybe some of them think "Oh hey! It's those weird girls with the backpack again who are always flipping a coin since they suck at decision making (with so many options it's hard to decide!!!). But they take our quirks with stride and are always so friendly and sweet (special shout-out to the guy who always sells us The Cookie!).

Geraldine D.

Yelp
I've been to Metro market magnolia several times and each time the experience is worse than the last. The customer service is deplorable, parking is horrible and the overall vibe from the employees is poor. Shop somewhere else!!
google avatar

Rita C.

Yelp
I generally agree with good reviews other people posted here: good quality(mostly) and good selection with rather high prices. Living few blocks away I go there pretty often because of convenience. For their price range they do have problems with stock management. Specifically, I ran into past due dairy more than once. Now I always check best before date before buying. Today I had pokey from their pokey bar for lunch and the rice was not just cold, it was stale (cooked yesterday, probably, kinda hard starchy texture typical for rice than spent a night in the fridge). Hope the fish was not stale, at least, that would be really bad. Seafood and meat departments selection is OK. Serviceable, but not excellent. I remember a couple of weeks ago I was buying mussels and the guy in the fish store spent 15 minutes trying to pick half a pond of good mussels out of their tray because most of them were already open. He did a good job, but it does not improve the store reputation. These are just few examples. I will have to keep using it because of convenience and selection, but I feel like they are slacking their QQ because of the local monopoly - there are no other good supermarkets in Magnolia.

Jummy Y.

Yelp
The difference between this location and the lower. Queen Anne Metropolitan Market location is dramatic. While most of the checkers are pleasant and helpfully, the deli staff and deli food are sorely lacking. The deli food (including hot foods such as pot pies, etc. ) are tasteless, dry and unappetizing. Based on numerous visits, the staff, in both the deli and seafood/meat departments treats customers as a bother, or rudely. Seriously, if it weren't for the check out, I'd never visit here.

Sean X.

Yelp
Excellent service from well-trained employees who get paid decent wages. A wide selection of fresh produce, locally sourced products, and other quality alternative brands. Amazing selections from the deli, buffet, and bakery. An inviting and well-stocked cheese shop. Helpful and knowledgable butchers, too. And they're open every night until 11pm. I've tested this MANY times over the last two years - including tonight, freezing cold late Sunday before a national holiday. The little south entrance is locked at night for security, but the main entrance on the north is open. Prices for most items do run a bit higher than standard grocery stores. However, MM nearly always offers good deals on their well-curated collection of quality wine and beer.

Zzz Z.

Yelp
Expensive. Way overpriced produce. With all the extra money from expensive produce they could afford to not have cardboard for toilet paper in their restrooms. Only drop a deuce here if your into having your ass bleed. Oh and don't expect paper towels after cleaning your hands. They are out or their machine is broken.
google avatar

Angel I.

Yelp
Yikes! They had moldy strawberries here. Quality control. :( Compared to the other Metropolitan Market locations, this Magnolia location does not have as large of a produce selection and closes earlier. No reason to come out to this location!
google avatar

Colleen S.

Yelp
The new renovation of this market is wonderful. They now have a buffet style salad and meal bar which is great for a quick lunch or dinner. The bakery makes chocolate chip cookies that are sure to blow your mind. The new layout gives it a much more spacious feel. The workers are friendly and eager to help. Overall great service and great place to shop!

Laura R.

Yelp
We live in the neighborhood and are here often. This isn't my favorite Met Market in terms of what's offered, but 5 stars are for the checkout staff and especially Jeff who bags. He is so friendly and helpful and makes it a joy to shop.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
A great market in Seattle. I stayed with a cool Yelper when I was visiting and Metropolitan Market was a few blocks away. There are lots of cool things here, more things you would find than a Fresh n Easy. What made this place even cooler was they had special Whidbey Island made Ice cream. In addition to that, they sold salami from Salumi as well as Theo's chocolate (A Seattle based company). The store was clean, and there were tons of free samples when I was walking around for you to try.
google avatar

Ashley E.

Yelp
I wasn't intending on going here but another errand left me in search of bone marrow bones so I thought I would stop in and see if I could find some. There weren't any out but one of the men behind the butcher counter found some in back and cut them up for me. Since I was there I thought I'd take a short little look around. Going into this place hungry wasn't the best idea and I had a hard time holding back on buying something from each aisle I explored. I couldn't pass up the poke bar though, the fish from the poke bar was super flavorful and fresh it made for a great little lunch. All the market items looked fresh and of high quality, if it was closer I'd probably be there all the time for my food shopping needs.

Yelp
Shopping at metropolitan market is always a pleasurable (albeit not cheap) experience. If you're looking for a plethora of cheese samples, this is your place! I recommend hitting metropolitan if you're going on a picnic, hosting a party, or simply want to spoil yourself with quality meats and cheeses. I would give 5 stars, however, the selection at this particular metropolitan is not as comprehensive as I would like. Still have to hit the larger chain grocery stores to get some of my weekly staples.
