A Richmond Restaurant Denied Service to an Anti-Abortion Group - Eater DC

"A popular German restaurant, Metzger Bar and Butchery, in Richmond turned away a conservative Christian organization last month, citing the group’s known stance against same-sex marriage and abortion rights as the cause. Located in Richmond’s Union Hill neighborhood, Metzger Bar and Butchery is a destination restaurant for those looking for riffs on falafel, schnitzel enhanced with curry mustard, and other inventive takes on German fare. Metzger’s chef and co-owner Brittanny Anderson, a Top Chef and Chopped alum, is also behind Alpine-influenced Brenner Pass." - Tierney Plumb

Google
Excellent food & service. This was nothing like any German restaurant I have been to before. The food was prepared with skill. With complex and interesting flavors. Our servers were very attentive, but not intrusive. We will definitely be going back!

Google
Very pleasant dinner with family. I got there early, and the bartender quickly engaged me in conversation and a drinks interview. Good spirits selection, small but well-chosen taps. Meal was VERY good, a schnitzel with great toppings. My nephew is vegan, and they came up with a cabbage and farro off-menu dish that was quite tasty. Not cheap, but value for the money.

Google
Love the atmosphere here. Been a few times and always enjoy my food. I pretty much stick to beer if im drinking, and they have one of the most thoughtful lists ive seen downtown. I really appreciate it!

Google
Absolutely loved brunch! Small and cozy vibe with a nice atmosphere. German influenced brunch menu. Everything was fantastic and the Bloody Mary was in my top 3 of all-time faves. Will definitely be back!

Google
We really enjoyed our dinner. My boyfriend says that one of his top meals he’s had in Richmond since we moved here 8 months ago! He had the short rib goulash the meat was very tender and the dumplings were tasty. One thing I would say about this dish it is not the largest dish in the world but it is one of the most tasty. In contrast I had the schnitzel which was humongous. We really enjoyed our appetizer of fried cauliflower. We strongly recommend that you make a reservation, the place was packed on a Tuesday night. Also the menu is not the biggest!*****watch out for cool special! Last night the had a schnitzel sandwich spear very crowded!

We had an amazing dinner at Metzger - we had charred cabagge which was very delicious! The pork schnitzel has great flavours, caviar on top of the pork schnitzel...🤤

Google
Amazing food, nice ambience and good service. We ordered the bread and butter, cabbage, strawberry salad and the trout. Everything was delicious. It’s been a while in Richmond since last time I had a dish at the level of the trout. This place is a little bit pricy but the quality is really good!!

Google
Great bar, craft cocktail selection and bartender. Cozy atmosphere with helpful service. This is definitely "German" food, schnitzel, etc. The rest of our party loved it although I found the menu a bit limited for my provincial tastes. Don't let my closed mind stop you from trying out this one! Still good rating

Yelp
The food was sooooo good ... we tried every dish .... The cocktails and wine were served with impeccable service... thanks to Steve, Lilly, Nick , Emma and the whole team for an amazing experience.

Yelp
My husband and I had a beautiful date night last night at Metzger and we will definitely be back! Service from start to finish was excellent. We shared the Parker house rolls for an appetizer, and they were absolutely divine. For entrées, I had the pork chop And he had the venison. Although I'm typically not a fan of gamey meats, the venison was absolutely incredible. My pork chop was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned. One of the best meals we've had this year! For dessert, we shared the Yuzu Panna cotta, that was topped with a blood orange hibiscus granita. It was the perfect ending to our meal. Don't walk, RUN to Metzger ASAP!!

Yelp
I've never really tried German food before, so I was eager to try Metzger Bar and Butchery when I heard about it. The chicken schnitzel was delicious, but definitely filling since the chicken is fried. The Semolina Pappardelle (a mushroom pasta) had a unique flavor combining mushrooms, saffron, and hint of citrus but also was creamy. I actually really enjoyed the pasta since I have not tasted anything like it before! The server was very attentive. The restaurant was not super busy (since it was a Tuesday night), but the ambiance was still very cozy and intimate. I am happy I was able to try this restaurant and recommend if you want to try a modern take on German food!

Yelp
Went there for dinner. We had the bread and butter, and the schnitzel. Everything was seriously delicious. The bread was my fav, I joked that I could eat just the bread as a whole meal and be very happy. Highly recommended trying this place out!

Yelp
6/1/2023. Y'all.. I really don't believe I am equipped to do justice to the amazing meal we enjoyed this evening. No seriously, the level of execution on each dish served, the layers of tastes in each bite, the service, the everything served with love ... holy schadenffreude! If you are not eating here you are missing out on some phenomenal eats! Our server Sharon was so welcoming and shared such tantalizing detail about the dishes. Our bartender Nick was also so in tune with our requests and went out of his way to serve some delightful after dinner drinks. As for the food... whoa! Chef Emma is a petite powerhouse! Many thanks to our gracious hosts for a simply outstanding, extremely generous, and welcoming experience.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended by a a local I know. In fact, its his favorite restaurant in Richmond. I decided to give it a go for brunch yesterday. I love the neighborhood its in but parking was a nightmare. I had to drive around a lot and found a spot about a block away. The place itself is cozy with a couple of outdoor seats. Lily, the bartender, was awesome. The drink menu here is solid, as is the food menu. I decided to get the Lamb Tartare which is served with an Egg on top and it everything sits on a thick slice of Rye I believe. It was an excellent brunch selection. I found the prices to be fair as well. I don't believe I've ever been to a German restaurant before but I really enjoyed the experience and can see this place becoming a regular brunch spot while I'm in town.

Yelp
A really cozy little spot. I recommend making reservations, just because it's not a huge place. The menu changes, I'm assuming based on the quality of ingredients they can get. This time, we got 2 small plates/appetizers- country fried morel mushrooms - morels topped with crispy chicken skin, with some charred leeks, and some kind of liver mousse that was also gently fried. So so tasty. We also got the lamb tartare, minced lamb mixed with deliciousness, on top of some kind of substantial crunchy wheat bread, and topped with crispy shallots. Really good. We ate every single crumb of both. For our mains, we got the pork schnitzel, which I think they typically have - a large, thin pork cutlet, lightly breaded and fried, topped with a slaw of crunchy vegetables (I think celery and maybe fennel root?), with a sauce, and a lemon for squeezing. The perfect bite. We also got the skate wing, which was lightly breaded and fried, topped with microgreens and mint, and over a slightly spicy sauce. So unexpected and yummy. We'd definitely get it again. They also made a delicious mocktail - I asked for something not too sweet, and they gave me a grapefruit drink with tonic that was soooo good and refreshing! We love Metzger. I wish I had taken more food pics, but we were honestly too busy eating.

Yelp
My husband and I recently enjoyed a lovely patio dinner at Metzger's Bar and Butchery in Union Hill. It was a slightly chilly evening, so the cozy comfort food Metzger's is known for really hit the spot! I wanted to start with a mocktail, but wasn't sure exactly what to order. Our server took note of my preferences, passed them along to the bar, and brought back a perfectly executed (and not-too-sweet) non-alcoholic drink. We split a radicchio and fig salad, as well as the appetizer feature, described as a "meat pie." The salad was perfectly balanced and the savory pastry was flaky and delicious. For dinner, my husband ordered the Pork Chop and I had the absolute pleasure of enjoying the Maitake au Poivre with spätzle and soft egg. Our dinners were heavenly! My husband's pork was tender, well-seasoned, and perfectly balanced between sweet and savory. My Hen of the Woods Mushroom over spätzle was TO DIE FOR! In the spirit of full transparency, I'll disclose that I licked the peppercorn sauce off of my dish. I just couldn't help myself; it was that good. I'm glad we were sitting outside by ourselves, because I'm embarrassing. Our server walked out mid-licking and was kind enough not to judge me for acting like an animal. We finished with a delicious slice of Basque cheesecake, which I'm pleased to say that I ate with a fork, even though it was good enough to pick up and shovel in. Dinner at Metzger's made for such an enjoyable evening. The sidewalk patio was comfortable and our server was delightful and knowledgeable. She was laid-back, but very attentive. We came here on a whim after not being able to secure last-minute reservations at a nearby restaurant, and I'm so glad it worked out this way! We will definitely return to Metzger's!

Yelp
My wife and i ventured to Metzger Bar and Butchery based on the head chef, Brittany Anderson's success on beat Bobby's triple threat. We had a terrific time. The food was very tasty and creatively prepared. We shared the braised cabbage, I had the fish (monkfish), and my wife had the pork chop. For desert, we shared a very tasty dish with cheddar ice cream. All was very nice, and tasty! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Looking for the perfect pork schnitzel? It's here. Come for brunch and try the liverwurst hash too. So delicious. The eggs are cooked perfectly. I'm a huge fan.

Yelp
My husband and I had brunch here a few weeks ago when we were visiting Richmond and really enjoyed it! We started with brunch cocktails, which were really great. Their Bloody Mary really hit the spot (I might have been a little hungover so this Bloody was necessary and exactly what I needed). We shared the Pommes Paillasson (a dish we almost always order when we see it on a menu), and it was a great version of the dish. I ordered the soft scramble with sausage, which was good (I thought the bread they served with it fought the flavor of the scramble a little bit so I enjoyed it but didn't want to eat it with the scramble; the sausage was the highlight of the plate - appropriately perhaps for a restaurant with "butchery" in its name). My husband had the Fruhstuck Brett, which was a really unique breakfast (soft boiled eggs, charcuterie and cheese, cornichon, fruit, and a pretzel roll) and very delicious. I thought the service was great and the atmosphere relaxed. Heads up - we had a reservation for brunch on a Sunday and the restaurant is right across from a church. We had a hard time parking for a reservation time before church let out. Once the church let out after its service, there was parking everywhere. So if you're going for brunch on a Sunday - 1 pm will be easier for parking. Overall, a really great spot for brunch. I enjoyed it and would be happy to return.

Yelp
Fabulous cocktails by Nick at the bar and really inventive desserts. A secret local gem.

Yelp
I will start with the fact that the food and ambiance are enjoyable. I had a reservation for 830pm. We decided to wait at the bar and ordered a drink. Getting a drink took at least 15 minutes. We were not seated until well after 9-910pm. We placed an order for both starters and our main entrees around 920pm. I ordered the vegetarian option. We were then told around 930 that this option was no longer available. The appetizer did not come out until 945pm. We were not offered any apologies or any other appetizer options in the meantime. I understand this is a small restaurant with a small team, but at least acknowledging a very lengthy wait would have been common courtesy. Will I come back to this establishment? Likely yes, but I will plan ahead for a long wait time and mediocre service.

Yelp
Terrible experience. Food was ok to poor. Service was dreadful. I will never return.

Yelp
We have been here 3 times now and it blows our mind every time. I had the venison kielbasa which was admittedly out of my comfort zone, but boy am I glad I got it. The cured ham appetizer was so simple yet so flavorful and satisfying. The s'mores desert was one of the best desserts I've had. We'll be back for a 4th time!
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
I loved the chicken schnitzel! When you think of schnitzel normally pork comes to mind, but Metzger did a phenomenal job on this variation and they also perfect the German vibes that the menu radiates. We loved the drink options as well and hope to return!

Yelp
Worth stopping by for the trout or spaetzle alone. Everything at Metzger was delicious, but the flaky trout and perfectly cooked pasta were truly the stars of the night. The outdoor seating section and wine/beer list are an added bonus for the restaurant, but the food at Metzger really speaks for itself.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Had to call and cancel an hour ago as my husband - who is recovering from a stroke - was just too tired to make dinner which was reserved as my birthday celebration. While I recognize my cancellation was a late one, the restaurant still charged me $20 per person for the five person cancellation. I never book here again.

Yelp
Second time in a long time and very satisfied with this meal. Cocktails, beers and food were all on point. Sarah took great care of us! Get in there!

Yelp
I've never had a bad dish any time I've dined at Metzger. The service, cocktails, and food have always been top notch. I love that the menu changes often so I've ordered something different each time.

Yelp
Two words: Disappointing & Unsatisfying. We dined with Metzger's with a group of friends on a Saturday evening and arrived on time for our 8:15 PM reservation. Upon arriving we were told it would be just a few moments for our table to be ready and we could stand outside and wait. For the next 20 minutes we "chilled" outside in the cold waiting for the table we expected would be available around the time of our arrival. At 8:35 PM we were seated and were provided with menus, it wouldn't be until close to 8:50 that anyone took our order. At this point my expectations were quite low and knowing that restaurant kitchen quality declines later in the evening I wasn't willing to order a $30 entree anymore and decided on a Kale salad. I reasoned "how bad could they mess up a kale salad?" Our party's food actually came out in a reasonable time after our delayed ordering and this was probably helped by the fact that the restaurant was clearing out at this late hour. My wife and I both received kale salads and after my first bite I knew I had made a terrible mistake as my greens were salty enough to melt a gallon of garden slugs. Why would anyone soak a salad in salt? I'm not salt sensitive by any means and typically enjoy a salty dish but I have no idea what inspired this restaurant's award winning chef to replicate the flavor of the Dead Sea on a dish. We both picked at our salads and chugged water to make the meal somewhat palatable. I might have eaten more of the salad if our server had left the pitcher of water at our table but we simply weren't getting enough attention on beverage refills to risk consuming our salt salads. After dining I advised our server that our meals were excessively salty and that the chef should adjust things because it was so gross. Nothing was done to make things right and while I'm disappointed at wasting $30 on salads that were bad I'm glad that we didn't order any of their higher end entrees. I'm giving the restaurant 2 stars because while our experience was awful the other couples dining with us claimed their food was fine and enjoyed their dining experience. Overall from our experience we left displeased, disappointed and departed hungry as we had to make a real dinner when we returned home.

Yelp
This was hands down one of the best spots that my friends and I enjoyed during our trip to Richmond. We had the Obatzda, Pork Schnitzel, Duck breast, and Ribeye as well as the Quark Pound Cake and Tapioca Pudding. The Obatzda came with this very crispy chip (lavish) with a delicious spread along with endives with fig. Everything tasted so fresh and had all kinds of textures making each bite absolutely delicious. Pork Schnitzel looks a bit underwhelming but the flattened meat was perfectly crusted and crunchy having each bite leaving you wanting more. The duck breast was slightly overcooked but the beet jus moistened it just enough to cut the fat and tasted pretty good. The ribeye was a solid piece of meat but was pretty fatty. I love fat on my steaks as it keeps it moist and juicy but it was a bit much. The desserts were so beautifully plated. One person in my party didn't love pound cakes but thought the quark pound cake was the best dessert he had ever tasted. I really enjoyed the tapioca pudding as well though thought there was too much granola on the bottom of the cup. But again, with the fresh fig, it was a delightful dessert. Outstanding dinner experience. The only thing that could've been better is the service. Oddly enough, the service at the start of the meal (peak dinner) was fantastic. As the restaurant emptied out (which was around the time we finished our entrees), our service was no where to be seen.

Yelp
Perfect dinner! We came here for a date night not knowing what to expect now post pandemic and not sure if any changes had been made since we had been here over a year ago... but they did not disappoint ! We enjoyed all the cocktails and would highly recommend trying the clear cocktail . Also all the food was perfect! We are so lucky to have this restaurant in our neighborhood. Thanks Metztgar !

Yelp
My husband and I had a gift card which gave us the opportunity to try something new! When we arrived we were greeted by the friendly staff and seated immediately. Our waitress was very attentive and nice. We started our meal off with the pretzel, it was not what I expected going to a German restaurant. It was petite and hard. It was cut in half like a bun and there was a creamy cheese/mustard in the middle. We both were surprised, but it was very good. For our entrees, we both ordered the sirloin strogonoff. It was perfect for a cozy evening and the portion size was good. We were warned that it was a "small plate" but it filled my belly! The space is small and I wouldn't recommend it for large groups, but it was perfect for an intimate dinner. There was a lot of street parking available. I don't know if we would choose to go again, but I would recommend everyone gives it a chance!

Yelp
I recently moved to Shockoe Slip and Metzger was recommended. My 1st time was unforgettable but I gave it another try. This time the server was almost rude and the meal reflected something was going on in the kitchen - not in a good way. Food was dried out, tasted like it had been frozen and thawed - and it made me wonder if they're not cutting corners. Just my opinion, but I'm going to stick to Carytown.

Yelp
So I can't believe I have never written a review for Metzger. This place is one that I call a secret sleeper. Metzger also holds a special place in my heart because apparently the day that it was opened was the day I gave birth to my daughter July 25, 2014. We happened to find out since we love the place so much we decided to hit it up on my daughters 1st birthday and they had a special anniversary menu that day. We ordered a Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts and a fried potato dish. Hands down the Brussel Sprouts au gratin were amazing. I would say they were a little smushier than how I typically like Brussel sprouts but it didn't matter because the flavor and textures were just that good. The cauliflower was also very tasty. The potatoes could've been more abundant and it didn't knock our socks off like the Brussel Sprouts. We have been to Metzger more than a handful of times but so glad we were able to go with our friends for dinner one night. Honestly I forgot how good this place was. For entrees I got the Pheasant and my husband got the boat... we both thoroughly enjoyed our dishes... I wished the pheasant was a tad larger of a dish as I definitely cleaned my plate... our friends got the schnitzel and swordfish and they both enjoyed it as well. Desserts we got the chocolate bomb and the apple strudel... the bomb was literally the bomb!!!! Anyway going to Metzger made me think we really need to incorporate this place back into our rotation of favorites! Reminds me we need to go back to Brenner Pass soon their sister restaurant!

Albert W.

Yelp
Service was terrible. It took 15 minutes for the staff to acknowledge that we were at the table after being seated..... it took 40 minutes to get appetizers.... Another hour to get entrees.... We asked several times about the length of time it was taking, "it's coming" was the reply. Finally we asked to leave before our entrees appeared and the waitress replied, "ok"! Repeatedly asked for a manager and was told that he was "out sick tonight"... we asked for our check after 100 minute wait (when the food arrived).... Kitchen staff came too apologize for lateness of meal.... Too late! Finally the staff sent the bartender to our table with the check.... Wait staff too afraid to bring it! He finally gave us the manager contact info.... And said that the manager was at his other restaurant tonight, Brenner Pass.... Not sick I guess! INCOMPETENT STAFF! SLOW SERVICE. MEDIOCRE FOOD! Stay away!!!
google avatar

Bill C.

Yelp
Food was ok, but pricey. I expected it to be a bit better for the price. The biggest disappointment there was the waitstaff. It just seemed like they had more important things to do then provide good customer service.

Yelp
A 5-star post has been sitting in my drafts section for many weeks with only one word written down: Obatzda. So I feel I must start this review by telling you to order the obatzda. It is delicious and wonderful, and chances are you haven't had an app like it anywhere else in Richmond. Metzger is the sister restaurant of Brenner Pass, which is arguably my favorite place for a fantastic meal in Richmond. Therefore, it's not a surprise tht Metzger is, too, delicious beyond comprehension. It's tiny inside and scoring a table feels like a win. It's dark and intimate, and I imagine it'd be a nice spot for a date. As it stands, I visited with my mom. We split the obatzda (have I told you how good it is? It's really good) and we both ordered platters of the schnitzel, which was pounded out nice and thin and was so, so, SO good. Their beer list was also impressive, and I ordered a German beer I had never heard of despite a few trips to Germany in the last decade. Very cool. All around, the experience at Metzger was top tier, and I'd love to return one day for round two.

Yelp
What a gem for this neighborhood. The servers are super cool and laid back, the menu brings modern twists to traditional German food, and the vibe is great. The entire thing works! The only pic I could get was of the salad. Our plane was late getting in. When my bratwurst arrived, I immediately started to devour it before taking a picture! ‍ I do mean devour! The sausage had great texture, the spetzel was tender, and the brown curry sauce delicious. I'd definitely get it again.

Yelp
How does this place only have 4 stars? This is literally in my top 5 favorite restaurants in Richmond. It is 100% amazing. The service makes it truly special. But the food is divine and the drinks are thoughtfully crafted and strong. If you haven't yet been, I would plan on making this your next date night spot!

Pete A.

Yelp
Seemed a bit pricey for a pounded flat piece of pork. Ambiance is bright, tight and loud. It's a quaint and unique place with a good wine selection, but no where what I was expecting per the hype. I may give this place another shot as I live in Church Hill and I like to support our local restaurants however there's much better places just a few blocks away.

Arthur G.

Yelp
Food and service is notably worse than in past visits.. the wait staff seems preoccupied and they made it uncomfortable. We were hoping theI food would redeem the experience, but it didn't. This was our last visit. We won't be back

Yelp
After a recommendation by a bartender we made a reservation for dinner. The place is located in a residential area which is common in the city of Richmond. We found a small comfortable place with a local feel. Food focuses on German dishes but the menu is small and powerful. We went over the top - ham appetizer, chicken schnitzel, pork chop and sundae dessert. None of the dishes were as you've known them previously - better. The sundae was exceptionally different and excellent. It may have been the most expensive meal we've had in Richmond but we'll worth it!

A R.

Yelp
Eat here. Great menu, fresh food, good drinks. It's small and you have to be into small restaurant kinds of things. But that means custom and really tasty. A lot of German themed dishes but also just good seasonal dishes. And some creative things, chicken schnitzel for instance. Go!

Sarah B.

Yelp
Wonderfully flavorful Meal!!! Romantic atmosphere!!Fantastic Service! After the first RVA German restaurant that we walked in was full with a 45 min wait ( they don't take reservations) we decided to look up other options online. Within minutes of my connection to Metzger's website I was able to reserve a table using Open Table. I accidentally put the wrong number of ppl in my party so I called the restaurant to adjust. A woman answered the phone and was able to assist me with the adjustment. I could hear mild noise and conversations in the background but nothing as loud as the first German bar we were trying to go to. I asked her about parking, she said there was plenty of free parking around the establishment. When we arrived, Wow.. for a country girl like me it was so much easier to park on this side of town. I was very pleased. We were greeted at the door. We were sat promptly and given glasses of ice water immediately while we looked over the menu. She told us the evening's chef special and answered any questions we had about the items on the menu. My teens were offered non-alcoholic mocktails from the bar. I really appreciate this gesture that made them feel welcome in what could be perceived as an intimidating mature and classy restaurant to a teen. Truly it is a little thing that made a big difference on this special night for us and made them feel so comfortable. House wine was $12 a glass. There wasn't a table cloth but nice cloth napkins, fresh cut flowers and a battery operated candle. The atmosphere was so romantic and very calming. The menu was clear and concise with traditional German food with a personal twist . We got the charcuterie board and it was filled A mix of spicy, sweet, fatty meats and cheeses . It was a good mix. Although a little fatty, the steak was cooked perfectly with lots of sear and flavor. The chicken schnitzel was topped with pickled beets, pickles and sat on top of a delightful curry sauce. Service was phenomenal throughout our whole meal. Because we were seated by the door, we observed the same hospitality and welcome to everyone that entered. Not everyone made a reservation online and the restaurant was still accommodating and welcoming. Honestly, many people walked into the restaurant so happy and greeted the staff like friends and family and it was so pleasant to see that the restaurant had that kind of relationship with their regulars. We were very pleased with everything and can't wait to try more of this current menu and for what surprises this restaurant has planned for the upcoming holiday season.

Yelp
Had a lovely first-date here, and loved the people and the atmosphere. The food was completely delicious. I devoured a steak (not on the menu just now) and the chocolate mousse/cake/thing was lovely. My date had chicken and seemed to really enjoy it, but her dessert was made from beets... which she misread on the menu and frankly didn't enjoy. So... read the deets or you could get beets. In any case, it's not a heavy German sausage-and-cabbage-laden menu. At least not when we went. Only glitch, the night we were there, their coffee machine was kaput. Not a big deal... I had a good black tea with dessert instead. Staff was very friendly, drinks were great, so the bar is also a win. It's indoor and outdoor seating, not overpriced for the quality profided, and it's even an easy place to park, north Church Hill area, not always the case in RVA. Hopefully they've fixed the coffee machine, because I plan on going back.

Yelp
Holy shit I never had German food before and this place is incredible. 10/10 one of the best meals I've ever had and I didn't know half of what I ate

Yelp
They should hide their rat traps better. Didn't take us long to get out of there. When we got up to leave the waitress was nasty. What a terrible environment

Yelp
Our neighbor-hood go to, always delivers with friendly service, well executed drinks, and a fun twist on some German traditions as well as unique and excellent originals. We also always enjoy the dessert.

Yelp
The menu was disappointing, struggling to even pick one item to order. When the plates came out, everything was just okay, with one protein at the wrong temperature. Poor value for the price; with tax and tip a serving of grilled cabbage was $25. If possible, the dessert menu was even more disappointing. Out of seven people, no one ordered dessert and three declined to order any food.

Yelp
Where do I start. Meal was only slightly better than what I order at a Sheetz. The bathroom seriously needs a plunger. Also soap...how does the staff wash their hands? Or maybe they don't, which explains my vomiting episode after I left. Stay away from the veal meatballs. I have to wonder how many of the 5 stars are just friends of owners and staff. If you enjoy wasting money and getting sick, then you should definitely schedule a visit.

Yelp
Tried to come here during RVA restaurant but I got sick. I'm glad i made it here during Memorial Day weekend for a Sunday brunch. This place has a lot of character. Bar has wall to wall subway tiles. Funky 70s tiles on the ceiling. Based on the recommendations, I got the Dutch Baby. Such warm goodness with s creamy sweetness in addition to strawberry and Blueberry. My wife got the chicken schnitzel. Holy cow, the breading was amazing while the chicken was thin and tender. Plus, the bacon was very smoky and well done. Definitely coming back during dinner.

Yelp
Every time I go Metzger or Brenner Pass, I'm amazed at how refreshing the season's menu is. Tonight was no exception. Both places will make a mocktail to your taste preference and tonight, Metzger surprised me with a mint, snap pea, and soda. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was. I asked for nothing sweet and something herbaceous/adventurous. The mixologist truly delivered. I started with the Tomato Salad- so light and oh so fresh. Just the perfect start to the meal. I ended up with the Chicken Schnitzel because it came with Broccolini Caesar and I'm glad I did. The schnitzel was so juicy and the breading was very flavorful. The broccolini Caesar was amazing and came with three anchovy filets that completed the dish. My partner had the charcuterie and the Currywurst. The curry dish was just bursting with flavor and I would definitely order that next trip. I highly recommend making the trip to Church Hill for the summer menu before the transition to the fall.

Yelp
We used to live 2 blocks from this place, yet never found the time to go here. Finally, as restaurant week came to town, we decided to give it a try. Thankfully I made reservations, as the place is quite small, but cozy. We greeted and seated immediately. For the restaurant week options, we ordered: Pork and lamb meatballs: Very good. Tender, juicy, and flavorful. The pickled raisins that came with it were just delicious. They gave the dish a sweet and sour note. Sausage: This came with their homemade pickles and cabbage. When brought out to us, the temperature of the sausage was perfect inside out. The pickles were delicious, and not too sour. Snitzel: Both my boyfriend and I decided to get this as our entree (per recommendations of friends). It was so good. The pork was breaded and fried to perfection. The portion size was ginormous! The duck fat potatoes that came with it were amazing as well. Everything about the dish was good. For dessert, we ordered the cheesecake and black forest cake. I personally wasn't a fan of the cheesecake, except the crumble that was on top (tasted like toffee?). The black forest cake was very dense and rich, which is good if you're a chocolate lover. Will definitely be back here after restaurant week is over.

Yelp
This place gets 5 stars for charm alone. I went for brunch with my friend/twin Brooke, and we were NOT out of place as we usually are. Patrons were cute and quirky, and the bartender and waitstaff were sweet and attentive. Brooke had a Bloody Mary and I had a mimosa (we went for brunch). I settled on the Dutch Baby and she had the schnitzel (which damn, I'm getting next time). Her dish was served with duck fat potatoes... HEAPS of them. My Dutch baby was warm and comforting, albeit a bit small. I could have had another serving. Flavor wise, both dishes were flawless. Admittedly, the menu and drinks are a bit expensive. You're paying for the experience as well as the food, and for that I will DEFINITELY be back for dinner. I was transported from Churchill to Germany in minutes!

Yelp
Do not come here hungry. Restaurant was pretty much empty when we arrived. Yet, it took over an hour to receive our food. Also note, guests that arrived after us received their food before us. Other guests were also complaining. The manager did acknowledge the long wait, and offered us a dessert on the House (chocolate torte, meh.) The food portions are very small, especially for the price (you'll pretty much need to go out to eat after you just went out to eat.) PS BTW, menu is seasonal, if a photo catches your eye, it may not be on the menu. I gave 2 stars as opposed to 1 because the food was actually decent

Yelp
Went back to Metzger tonight and it was amazing. The food was great as always and the service was even better. They were able to accommodate two extra people in our table during dinner service. Our server Lian was amazing with great recommendations. Just can't say enough good things about this restaurant.

Yelp
Full disclosure: I was sent to Richmond for a month for business and have eaten at almost all of their "Top 25" per Richmond Magazine.... and let me tell you, Metzger's TAKES THE CAKE. I honestly saved it for one of my last places because I am NOT a big fan of German food, but I was BLOWN AWAY at that quality, taste, and atmosphere! First of all, the restaurant itself is so perfect. It's a townhouse set up and intimate location, but not too loud. I ordered the tasting menu and was not disappointed! I don't want to ruin it for any of those who like to be surprised, but my photos should outline what you get! The food is *phenomenal* period. The chicken liver mouse was the best I have ever had... so unctuous and light at the same time. The flank steak was some of the best steak I've had, and I have been round the world searching for the perfect steak! They served it with a grape and farro and buttered sage sauce and I am still salivating over the experience. Most interesting was the tuna carpaccio with figs and a gin jam?!? So creative! 10/10 for food, any day. As to alcohol, I ordered the wine pairing and was not disappointed. Their pairings were a great value, and SO INTERESTING! I had never heard of many of the varietals, and honestly loved every single one of them! Very complex, earthy, and well worth the price. Service is my last point, as it was *on point.* I sat at the bar and Courtney did an extraordinary job presenting everything and chatting throughout the night to educate me on the various dishes and wine regions. My server Jyoti was such a sweetheart! I even had the chance to meet one of the owners (I think?) Kjell, who told me a bit more about the history of some of the wines, where to find them, and the origins of the spot! Overall, I could not recommend this place higher. I have been to many Michelin Star restaurants who have not performed at this level, and I totally understand why they have recently received such high reviews and awards. Kudos and congrats Metzgers, you deserve it!
